Hi well i had an interesting day today was told about this 1955 oval thats been in a shed for about 8+ years current owner and around 20+ years in the origanal owners shed that was now up for sale. This thing just seems almost to good to be true origanal sales book, 75000 miles never been welded as no rust and no bog the body was striped and repainted some 8 years ago has all new trim headlining carpets seats redone etc all new rubbers etc it just needs putting back together.
Let me know what you all think does it seem to be a good car? What sort of money would it be worth?
reub ·
WOW!
10k?
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
baja it, na jks that is one neat lookin rust free bug
cam070 ·
Due, don't wait, make an offer and get it to your place before anyone else does. I dream of finding an opportunity like this.
jamiec ·
Yes the hole car is complete evan the origanal number plates all the wheels are dated 2/55 etc.
jamiec ·
I would think not much more needs to be spent but does need new tyres, battery and bumper bars need to be recromed thats about it. There are dockets for thousands spent on the new uphoulstery for the seats and carpets rubber seals its all there just assemble and go like a big meccano set😁
Camo ·
You lucky, lucky bastard.
What a great find. I would easily pay 8k for it if its all there and as good as the photos look. It doesn't cost anything to put back together, so you will have a complete car for 8k (give or take a little).
Kev
jamiec ·
Yep its all there evan the badge in the steering wheel is like new as are the headlights tailights etc plus an adaptor to fit up to the vw motor so you can start motors when out of the car as well as some extras 4x wheels tail and head lights speedo alltough they are off a slightly later bug😢 and some books on bugs etc😁 I don't think the photos do the car justice and the shine on the paint is straight off the gun its never been polished.has a new set of running boards as well as the old ones all new engine bay sound deading panels new exhaust pluse the old one with the little end tip on it. I had a mate of mine check out the body and paint as he is an auto paint specialist and gave it a big thumbs up👍
mickey_0789 ·
im in love....😍
vw54 ·
SO have u actualy purchased the a car ???
jamiec ·
Woohoo yes i have paid a deposit on this car i can't wait to get it home and start sorting it out👍 Thanks for all the input sofar peaple. I think i will try and find a new wiring harness for it and fit it while it will be easy to access it anyone know where i might be able to get a new wiring harness to origanal spec? Still welcome any input to this car.
Camo ·
Congratulations, but we all want to know how much you paid for this beauty.
I believe buying a new harness off the shelf (so to speak) may be hard as all the ones made OS are for left hand drives.

*Looking at the pic with the rat poison in it*...Obviously it is not going to be a 'Rat Bug!'
jamiec ·
Hi IN2VWS was having a look at your great web site and see one of the accessories brochures circa 1958 that has a pic of the same type weathershield that comes with this car and it list mudflaps as an option to as there is a set of rear mudflaps come with the car as well😵💫
jamiec ·
teeveezed haha yep no rats here😂
vwsteve ·
i recently purchased 2 1954 odd bugs plus spares, 1 of them is identical to yours including the colour,he bought all new gear for it,difference is my body is still unbolted from the floor and everything is pulled off it as well😎
i plan on re using the harness in mine, if yours is uncut just leave it.
jamiec ·
vwsteve this one is not bolted back on yet its just sitting on the pan.
57 oval ·
Top buy mate, hope it all goes together for you, if you buy a new harness they are all Left hand drive, you only need to extend a couple of wires not real hard, I cleaned the paint and crap off of my origional loom as the outer casing wasnt cracked at all and it cleaned up like new,
good luck with her
Finky ·
That looks like a grate find. if you didnt buy it I would have! Im sure it would be worth $18,000 plus when its back on the road.
matberry ·
Fantastic looking find.
Don't use a new harness, if the car is as good as it looks, the og harness will clean up with some thinners, better than a repro anyday.
Ok i will look into cleaning up the og wiring harness and check that all conections are good and if all is ok will leave it as is.👍
vwsteve do you have any pics of your two new oval's?
vwsteve ·
nah not yet mate, they are staying in his shed untill after i have moved in july, its an absolute twin to yours, top to bottom resto was done, you should put the chrome trim back into your screen rubbers if you can too, looks more original then😎
jamiec ·
Yep will look into fitting those trim back into the screen rubbers as there are still a lot of things to fit up etc i will get there just got to get it home now😁
RUBY ROSE ·
Great looking car- do you know what colour it is? original or not
Dave
jamiec ·
Thanks, can't remember the colour name but has been painted in the original colour👍
jamiec ·
Hi can someone tell me where i can get the correct info for this car as i want to make sure i get it as close to standed as i can like what colours for motor, suspension parts etc for correct details?
cheers
jamie
vwsteve ·
motor tinware is black, not sure on pan, maybe a dark grey to black, susp parts are black
jamiec ·
Thats great just need to know if they use gloss or matt black, I am realy after high detail and correct colours and try my best to get that wright.
I have been searching on the samba web site also and found some very good pics of motors and suspension parts that are said to be correct it all helps in getting it wright
thanks
jamie
jamiec ·
Is there a way to tell what the motor is for this car 30 or 36hp? i did a bit of searching from what i can see is the single tip exhaust systems were fitted to the 30hp motor and that the oz assembled cars changed to the 36hp in march 1955 i belive my car is feb 1955 so i think i might have the 30hp motor🙄
Thanks
jamie
jamiec ·
IN2VWS the engine number is 1-0992868 if you are able to work out what the motor is that would be great.
Thanks
jamie

oval TOFU ·
That is soooo beautiful. I'm sure you'll do her justice!
Congrats on the find - there's plenty of envious dubbers here me thinks!
Joels72Lowlight ·
Does that mean that the Super will be up for sale? 😀
jjwebb123 ·
terrific car,im glad you got it.
Grey 57 ·
Great find. 😵😵
They are still out there, tucked away sleeping and waiting.
Hey Joel the thought has crossed my mind about selling the other bug but its not a super though has had a 1600 twin port fitted. It would help to clear some space and provide a few more dollars to go on the oval😀
Yep they are still out there just waiting to be found😉
jamiec ·
Does anyone know what the seating capacity is for these oval bugs with no seat belts would it be 4 or 5 seats🙄
I had a 57 morris minor years ago same no seat belts went to get the car regested they asked me how many seats it had i said don't know they then asked how many seat belts
i said none they then asked how many would you like to make it so i said 5 so 5 seater it was reged as. Thought i would make it 5 just to cover me if i ever needed to carry 5 in the car.
ian.mezz ·
4 seats
AS I have a 1971 superbug and the plate on the car says 4.
but i think you could get 8 people in 😂😂
jamiec ·
Hi ian.mezz i have a 72 bug and they are 4 seater becouse thats what is on the compliance plate but older cars like the oval and morris minor don't have compliance plates so there is no seating number given. I have had 22 peaple in my mini😁
If anyone has a 50s to 60s bug what is the seating capacity on the rego papers?
ian.mezz ·
we have 3 none seat belt bugs and no seating numbers on any rego papers
jamiec ·
Thanks for the reply ian.mezz rego papers must be different in NSW as when i was in QLD and now in TAS the rego papers state the seating capacity of the car on them.
Slammed59 ·
nice score! thats the colour im planning to put on my 56... make sure to show some build threads
Barnabie ·
Wow, what a fantastic find! As someone pointed out there may still be some out there waiting for rescue, but I suspect none too many in as good a shape to start with than yours. Congratulations, looking forward to watching your thread.
Kris.👍
jamiec ·
Hi all just starting to make a little progress on the oval i polished up the dash grill and fitted it and all so fitting the gaurds up and deck lid, bonnet and engine bay rubbers.

aircooled10 ·
Hi Jamie C

jamiec ·

Hi aircooled10 welcome the the site sorry though as the trim came with the beetle when i bought it and was told the trim was done local and about 10 years ago that is all i know about it😢
vwsteve that is great you have the oval now and i am looking forward to seeing the pics. I will be up i Queensland in late November and will be staying at my parents place for a little bit and they are at Redcliffe so as your lacation says Redcliffe maybe i could come round for a looky?😁
Bizarre ·

vwsteve ·

Paulc1964au ·

jamiec ·
It runs🙂 and i drove it in and out of the shed today😀 this would have to be the first time this car has moved under its own power for over 30 years🤪
jamiec ·
WooHoo the oval now has full rego its back on the road again😁
volumex ·
Congratulations. Great to hear its back on the road.

Also went to see the last owner off the oval and he was so pleased to see it back on the road and said he wants to buy it back now🤪
wolfgang54 ·
very nice buddy, love it.
i will post some pics of my oval 54, back on the road after 10 years storage
jamiec ·
Thanks wolfgang54 be great to see the pics of your oval and i notice you have a P76 what model is it i had a 6 cyl super and a v8 executive some years ago fantastic cars they are i miss them might buy another one day😀
wolfgang54 ·
yes mate have a mint 6 cyl deluxe 4 speed on the floor. 39,000 on the clock from new, supposed to be only a handful left of this model.
jamiec ·
the P sounds great yep not many 6s with 4 on the floor i nicked one of those 4 speeds and put it into a 6 cyl leyland marina that car would spin the wheels every time i changed gears if i wanted it to😂 woops getting a bit off topic haha
wolfgang54 ·
yep back to 54!
did you rebuild the motor or give it a good overhaul of accessories etc?
jamiec ·
No i just replaced the main seal the compression was checked and was good had the generator checked and carb so realy just a clean and paint with new exhaust new plugs, leads and cap etc.
oval TOFU ·
Looks really really hot! Well done on getting her back on the road. You must be very proud!
