So 3 weeks back i bought my first VW.
I saw it on here and decided to give the guy a deposit over the phone after a short chat and based on that he posted.
So this is it.
some of you might have seen it.
Well i was excited and also thinking this could be the dumbest thing, buying a car without seeing it first.
We started to strip her back and it looks like fred flintstone's car, drivers floor and battery section very rusty, and the left sill even worse, 🙁 a bit disappointing since the seller said no rust in the floor.???.
I cut the floor out and put a new piece in today so im happy with that but still have the sill and then on to the things i knew that needed fixin.
oh well it gunna need a bit more work but it will be worth it, here are a few pix.

man you got ya work cut out for ya self bit at a time and youll get there she ii look good when your done good luck keep us up to date
1500S ·
The best model Type 3!
While you are repairing the "very little rust" as the selling add said, do yourself a favour and pull the front guards as well. You could be in for a bit of a shock there too. Another well known rusty spot at the reinforcing brace on the front quarters.

thanx man. I can't wait to get it on the road.
I think it is and was a hoodride. What do you think?
HGFS ·
If you are in need of a sill I got new one from cip1 and it seems to be a decent piece. I haven't tried fitting it yet but if all you need is the section directly under the door and not the section behind the door as well they are only about $80US plus freight. One of the few repair panels you can get new.
Nice car, same model as mine. I remember this one being up for sale when I bought mine.
Which direction are you going to take with it?
zocstar ·
The sill from cip is 60 + 190 shipping. Ouch.
My plan is to get it on the road and slowly fix it up, so she'll be hood for a while.....
HGFS ·
I think that's about all I paid for shipping and I got a heap of other things as well so it didn't seem so bad. It seems a lot for just the one part but its probably due to size. I also got a bamboo parcel tray and stereo etc, I forget the exact shipping cost but was around a couple of hundred. Exchange rate was better then too.

damn good work!
always check out a ride before the foldage changes hands oh well
looks like it'll be cruising about before long
cheers
zocstar ·
Wooohoo got a dash pad in reasonable condition.
Also have done the floor repair and should have the old carpet and seats back in this tommorrow. Then off to the beatersto fix the sil and screen rust( too much for me to tackel)
empi ·
Typical type 3 rust there , believe it or not that aint that bad.
zocstar ·
Here is the dash
got the old carpet back in, and drivers seat back in also.
I bought the plastic seat guides off a guy on eBay. Myvwstuff.com and they are very good for 25$ shipped.
1500S ·
Not a bad looking dash pad. Look after it as they cost a bit to get re skinned.
By the way! What about modding your profile by adding the area you live. Makes it easier for getting help!

Good lad!
There's only a few places that re-skins the dash pads and some of them are doing crapp jobs. I've had about 4 done now, two of the early imported ones. one ok but the last one was a bit ... well I could have kiiled the bastard! I'm in the process of building a new one by grafting the outer ends of an early one onto a later one. I'd rather drive to Melbourne or Brisbane now rather than give the hackers around Sydney another go. Will see when I get to that stage. Not important at the moment!

Dash Dr in Melbourne do a good job restoring type 3 dash's, make sure they put the same speaker pattern in when getting one done otherwise they do a small perforated rectangle not a trapizoid.
empi ·
Actually Zoc yr dash is pretty damn good condition!!!😵💫
restore dont reskin, will look funny in a stock car, maybe fitting for a heavily modded type 3

Thanks for the info on The Dash Dr Adam. Do you know if they clamp them to a metal dash section to vac form it? As for the speaker section I'd get them to leave it solid and make a drill jig for myself even though there's a million holes in it!

zocstar ·
just an update ive got some bits n pieces in the post over the last week or 2.
my boss overhauled the stater motor, $50 for parts and some jelly beans for the labour, not bad.
the only prob is that it now is the best part of the car, LOL.
with the new battery it now starts better than new.
the plan is to go to wally's (panel beater)on monday, hope it'll only be a week or 2 since he is just doing it on the side. 🙂
zocstar ·

The rust repairs were done by wally's panel and paint, in warrila. He should be painting it next weekend.
He is a great tradie!!!! Highly recommended. 🙂

Looking very good mate! Quick question, the hose which is coming out of the oil breather, where is that running too?
zocstar ·
Dunno? I'll check on the weekend.
Maybe someone else can answer

Hmm, I believe there should be an air filter on there. You might wonna double check that.
Seems to be coming along nicely though 🙂
zocstar ·
Yea it should go into the stock air filter setup. I'll prob just get one of the "go fast bits" filter for it. Lol.
Pollywaffle ·
Haha. I think I'm doing the same when I'm putting on my Empi air filters on and taking out the stock air filter.

nice work mate....any more pics of the new paint job?
Scarab (aka: Paul)

that apron looks a bit bashed. Pays to have it panel beaten before painting. 😀
Scarab ·
bit picky aren't you?? 🙅 once the bar is on it will hardly be noticeable, and besides that, if its low, its only gonna get hit again in the future 😀
Scarab (aka: Paul)
vlad01 ·
Sorry i am perfectionist when it come to these things. Even if i can't see it I will always know its there 🤪
zocstar ·
Well you shouldn't look at any more pix of my car.
The new paint job ( that cost $100) brought out all the hail damage creases dings bumps and lumps.
Well he did all the rust repairs for FREE. and then offered to paint it if I buy the paint and rub it back. So I took the offer.
If I had the 5ish grand(or whatever) to do the job so it would be a show car..... I still wouldn't do it.
zocstar ·
@ Jake: it will go back together this weekend. You coming down to help?
Father in law gets home with window rubbers from the states on Friday.
@scarab: thanx mate, and I'll post some more imperfect pix on the weekend. Hahaha.
benjicon ·
The dents look great.. adds character and charm, tells a bit of a story about the car too. There's too many perfect old volks out there already. imho. Cant wait to see it back together. 🙂
Pollywaffle ·
It's looking really good. Making me feel bad that I haven't done the same to mine.

Pollywaffle ·
Did you end up getting new wheels for this zocstar? I didn't notice the pop-out windows before either. It's looking fantastic.
zocstar ·
Thanx, still thinking about the wheels. just dunno. i like BRM but..... sounds like fitting is a prob.
Pollywaffle ·
BRM's would look great on this. Maybe with a little bit of negative camber 😉
Pollywaffle ·
I believe I saw you driving down Victoria road yesterday at about 5:30'ish. You were about the cross the Iron Cove bridge. Looks fantastic! I didn't have enough time to give you a wave as I was going the other way.
zocstar ·
Not me man. I was mowing the lawn. It must have been my doppelgänger.
Have you sold your notch?
Pollywaffle ·
Wow. Could have sworn it was yours. Yours hasn't been stolen has it? :P Still trying to sell the notch. Fingers crossed she goes soon! I want to get started on my beetle project.
zocstar ·
Haven't had much time on her lately.
Chrome trims are now on, clear indicators and new plates.
Still have the headlining to fit and window trims. Thinking I'll drop it another notch all round.
Just need time to do all that.
Anyone want to do it for me?
Pollywaffle ·
Dropping it another notch would be sweeeet. Get those BRM's too 😉
type3disease ·
good looking wagon - very kewl...!

nice, i really like the work you have done
looks great and as you said before
what dints i dont see any
zocstar ·
Hi crew. It's been a while. So I finally pulled out my motor to find a killer noise. I was super happy it find that it was the fan. I had a 2nd hand motor ready to put back in just in case. My only set back was I swapped exhausts and fitted the extractors, but I need to fit a muffler as the one on the extractors won't fit an would be on the ground.
Any ideas/ photos would help.
Man it was noisy driving to work. 😉
zocstar ·
Haven't posted for a long time.
Finally sorted out my motor issues. Turns out that the inlet manifolds were loose and the gasket blew out.
So at the moment it's back to solex.....however after a tune up she runs better than ever!
I was ready to burn it but glad I spent the time fixing it.

Nice ride bro. Its great how much work has been done on such little money. Especially the rust and paint work, most people would of paid thousands for that. Ive just found a retired local Panel beater / spray painter thats going to help me with my SquareB. Did you use the original window seal? Also the did the carpet come with the car or did you buy that recently?
dragsters for life ·
came up a treat, enjoy your type 3
zocstar ·
I bought new seals/rubbers all round except the door stuff.
The carpet is original, I work next to a trimmer who will make me a new set. I just have to pull mine out to use as a template ( one day).

I was the owner of this car in the '90s and have some pics of it when I sold it in 2001. I recognised it due to its rarity and a few specific marks (the Klaack Motors sticker from where I used to get it serviced, the ding in the back panel under the rear door, the dent in the chrome bumper at the back from a bus in Cabramatta, the slight colour difference in the front left panel which was a replacement after an ambulance ran into the car in Liverpool) and I could go on!!! So great to see the old girl looked after and looking good! Could tell you some interesting stories about the car.....!! Can repost scanned versions of the pics if you're interested.
kanduboy ·
Another pic of the car

And one more

Can't resist but tell you about one time I was driving the car up through Epping in Sydney and came to the Epping Road overpass (four lanes either side, lots of cars) and pulled up to the lights a turning lane. Suddenly heard a huge bang, clutch and accelerator jammed, engine revved, car stopped and engine stalled. I got out of the car, looked behind and saw pieces of the engine on the road for about 20m behind the car. I looked under the car and saw the engine had fallen out !! The engine mount had snapped (having been broken and welded together many years before by a previous owner) and the engine had fallen straight through to the ground. Quite a sight when the tow truck dragged it and the engine scraping up on the back of the truck! Few weeks and a reconditioned engine later and I was back on the road...
kanduboy ·
Just saw Zocstar's last post was in 2011, hopefully you'll see my post!
vdubin ·
Ha looks like he may not as my last post to him was in 2010 I had a break from Air cooled but now also own a 69 Square
I was hoping to see what the end result of this car 🙁
zocstar ·
I wish I still had it hence why I Logged on tonight. Thanks for sharing.
vdubin ·
Oh bugger where Is it now ?
zocstar ·
It only 3kms away. I sold it to a guy with too much money.
I had no time spare time for it and wanted to build a huge deck off the back of the house.
A mutual friend bring it around every time he takes it for a cruise.
The new owner got the engine fixed.
I do get a bit jealous seeing it around.
