You could leave it in the box but that would defeat the purpose of buying it.Realistically though an engine will produce approx i litre of water vapour for every litre of fuel it burns, this coupled with the other by products of combustion make a corrosive substance which corrode the mufflers internally.the best way is to run it long enough to evaporate this moisture or use a stainless steel muffler.I have seen alot of you beaut products over the years but the companies usually disappear before any claims are paid.

thanks for that info professor grumble the things you can learn is unreal

Hi Robb
Ceramic coating IS expensive... ??
You could get it Zinc galvanised... ??
or painting it with hi temp paint... EPOXY..??
You would need to pour some paint inside it and turn it every which way ...
a stainless muffler is also expensive to buy initially...
or You could pour some oil into it...
or pump some grease into it... never actually done this ??
although My Danish made muffler has lasted a few years and I kept the outside painted with High Temp paint..
but it kept cracking... so rust wasn't the problem... lol
best of luck

No coating, Zinc, heat resistant paint will last more than a few hours...heat expansion, contraction, water vapors, plus lots of other things will eat your mild steel exhaust, no matter what you do...or how much you spend to protect it..

Probably the best thing about VW Mufflers is they do get hot
Very hot... so the water vapors etc should be burnt up quickly..
much faster than a front engined car.. rear muffler...
I used good quality High Temperature muffler paint which lasts great... doesn';t last forever on a VW muffler though... lol
OK.. I'll recommend Hi temp paint on the outside and oil or grease inside..
the oil or grease will need to be added frequently...
as it will be burnt up....
maybe lithium based grease rather than the clay based green chassis grease....

🤪 WTF Lee??
Ceramic coating isnt THAT expensive
I just had it done
No it doesnt do the inside
Stock type exhaust / mufflers are going to be REAL hard to retro fit protection
The problem is you cant seperate exhaust and muffler on a stock set up
if you want to keep the stock exhaust "primo" Grumble is right
Put it in a box or drive it
Dont do 2km drive in it once a week
A custom made set up with a detachable stainless steel muffler would be the best

Hi
Get it ceramic coated and only drive it on trips lasting over 1/2 an hour, that will maximise its life, but rust in a steel system is like the old weight loss add, (use Kiwi accent) "it wont happens overnight, but it will happen".

Thanks Bizzarre, there is no real answer and Definitely do not fill/coat it with oil ,the EPA and the police will be after you for the smoke as it burns off.

thanks everyone for your in put got some tinken to do

calling brains trust dose any one know how hot a exhaust can get internally

Probably not worth worrying about considering that there are still type 3's around with stock mufflers from the factory, so this one should last about 40 years too. Most that I've seen were badly rusted on the outside. Maybe just avoid short trips, to ensure that it does get hot enough to get rid of any condensation.

I would imagine that would be why the stainless steel zorts are classed as the upgrade, not necessarly for performance but for lack of wearing.
Stainless muffs on egay are cheap az. But ricer. But are a discount option. smallest you would find though would be 2.5inch outlet. Maybe too big. often come with free detatchable silencers though that reduce the outlet to like an inch and half 😂. It does make a difference in quieting, but that will bring the torque back up also.
What about electroplating? of say moula wasn't a concern?

why i ask about how hot an exhaust may get inside i ve heard of rust treatmeant which is a 2 pack set up which may with stand high temp not sure how high then high temp paint on the outside and im done
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Just go custom and get stainless. Save you a fortune in the long run......

That might depend on where you get the coating done.
I had a set of merged headers coated by HPC a while ago and they were coated inside and out.

Intersting
I thought it was like "sprayed" on with a gun
If it was a "pipe" you could get to both ends i suppose - but stock and heater boxes or my spaghetti header set up i didnt think it was possible
