After a Hella H4 headlight set, the standard 7inch that will fit in most cars with big round headligts such as holden HQ-HZ etc. So to simplify, something that fits either Type 3 or Kombi ( no idea if same for Beetle).

I have been using H4 Hella headlamps for years..
in beetles and in type 3s...

either sealed beam... excellent... but can get cracked in the country.. and burn out.. hella H4

semi sealed beams... these use the "normal" H4 headlamp bulb as used in most cars... [70s-80s-90s+]
not the bulb as used in VWs..

if cracked these continue to work..

its not a straight swap over though... lol

cheers

Hi Andrew

You can get them from any parts store, Repco etc. I use Bulk auto parts in Peakhurst or Gardiners at Carlton.

There are two main types i think. Original semi-sealed H4 lights that use the two extra adjusting screws in the rim, and the sealed type that has a one screw rim. The semi-sealed could be pretty hard to find the other type you can get in most places.

these lights don't have any adjusting screws etc..
I use early holden or falcon buckets to hold them and the buckets are attached to the adjusting screws...
as I said this isn't a 5 minute swap over..

the 75-76 beetles had BOSCH H4 semi sealed beams with the buckets attached... these screwed to the 2 x L shaped brackets that are in all 1968> beetles..
and the two adjusting screws aren't used...
the Bosch headlamps use the VW-European type of bulbs.
not the very common ones as used in most things japanese etc..

the 75-76 beetle headlamp Rim was chromed plastic with no adjusting screws... just the bottom screw hole that holds them on...
these were also used on Kombis...

the hella H4 are sold at Auto one repco and most Auto shops..
a cheaper version is sold by Most VW parts shops...

cheers

Yes those were used on Kombis eg. 76 model with a plastic rim.

Would you have any photos of how the buckets need to be modified?
