It has been roughly two months since parting with my dear beetle, and of course I need another one. The plan this time is to find a clean body and build up a strong reliable daily 1916cc- with some extra boot for novice hillclimbing 🙂
Now, I'm tossing up between Wayne Penrose or pobjob.
I've called pobjoy (and subsequently have no phone credit left) and have gotten a Price on a standard 1916cc that will produce around 70bhp.
Penrose has (roughly) quoted me a grand and a half more than pobjoy to build a 1916 with around 100-110bhp.
Now I know that horsepower isn't everything, and I'm not trying to start arguments against the credibility of vw builders, but would people recommend spending that little bit more for that 30+ bhp?
Is anyone running the standard 1916 from pobjob? Or Any references for wayne?
I understand that pobjob is well established in the 1916 field and would love to hear of some experience from some fellow dubbers!
Cheers,
Ollie

you need to re-read your post, - "Penrose has (roughly) quoted me a grand and a half more than penrose to build "
anyhow. If hillclimb is what you are thinking of getting into... you need to talk to the people who are experianced - Craig torrens, bat69, sides (dave), vw cool (glenn) .... experiance is where your (their...) best ideas come from.
Id say go with what is most effective for your needs. you want to drive it every day? then having a realiable, long lasting engine is what you need.
Also, I am sure you know, but there is no point having 100hp, but stock brakes all round..... cause you aint stocking for nothing then...

I can only say that Stan's work is the work of a true craftsman.
Stan builds things absolutely correctly and has thousands of engines under his belt - so that experience is included in the deal.
Stans engines are good enough to put in an aircraft - and that is my measure of quality.
Ollie ·
Sorry edited now- writing on an iPhone makes life a bit difficult!
Of course mustard, brakes are certainly essential, but I feel I could do those myself, whereas I could never build my own engine haha.
And yeah I plan to get some info from these guys asap. With regards to hillclimbing it's something in the future, but not so much the near future- I guess the main plan is to have a good streeter with some power to boot.
Ollie ·
Terence are you running a standard pobjob?
Paulc1964au ·
Out of interest how much for the pobje motor?
Ollie ·
The standard package (70bhp and a 10.0 in the 8th mile, 16.0 in the 1/4) is 6k

we had a dyno day and all the base 1916/ 1915 all had a bout the same hp 57/ 69 / 65 depending on age
Yes Stans 1916 - solid, reliable. People tend to forget that the Germans are the masters of metallurgy - I work for Siemens another famous German engineering company - and quality of components is fantastic and when well machined and assembled - very nice.
As was mentioned earlier the experience over 20+ years of people that have had and FLOGGED Stan's engines without mercy is well documented.
$ for reliable fun = Stan Pobjoy.

Mate you need to compare apples with apples how much for Stan to build you extra 30 HP? or Rod to build standard?
Both these guys can build em no doubt, but you need to make even comparisons.
BTW in my opinion 30 HP $1500 is very reasonable.

Hey Ian I was just going by what pobjoy was saying 🙂
he did mention quite firmly the new-age dyno results are often different to what he feels is the engines proper power output.
As for durie I've only herd good things so I will have to have a geez!
At this point I'm leaning toward pobjoy, terence do you know
how long the turn around is on the rebuild?
SuperOwen ·
Decide on what you want and let the engine builder quote you from there, you cant compare quotes for completly different products. BTW Rod Penrose and Wayne Penrose are different businesses, give both a call if your near wollongong.

On this dyno day.....BUT as a comparison, Ian's fuel Injected 2300cc stroker had 74hp.
Someone that can build a motor to Aviation standards and gives warranty will always get my vote 😎

And on this day my 2300 carburetted engine made 139hp 😂.

Not now Craig 😘

I don't think Stan's turnaround is very long - but you would need to ask him I guess.
Did you find a good car already?
You sold ur green snot-rod didn't you?
matberry ·
And Craig, I'm presently upgrading a 1915 that made 50 rwhp with 40 IDFs 😂
Craig Torrens ·
Keep up the good work Matt 👍

Wanna buy a 65hp atw turnkey 1915?
1303Steve ·
Hi
Have you bought a car yet. There's great L bug on Ebay at the moment in Melbourne with all the gear on it but no motor.
Get an apples to apples quote from the engine builders.
Why not go Subi power with one of those reversed R&P transmissions? You will easily have double the HP for about the same money with 5 speeds and the 1916 will still need a stout gearbox.
Steve
Sides ·
Pretty much agree with what's been said here already.
Choose your builder, tell him what the car is and what it's going to be used for and they'll guide you. And like Craig has said, in that process you should be able to see who you want building your engine.
Stan I know is more than happy to talk things through, and he definitely knows his stuff. Same goes for Dave Butler.
I've had engines built by both Stan and DB and would happily recommend either - current engine done by DB. Both engines I spent a lot of time driving with a big stoopid grin on my face.
😀🤓

Hey Simon how much are you looking for? Are you in
a rush to sell?

that would barely pull the skin off a custard 😂
vlad01 ·
my thoughts too. I was like 1915 70hp???!?! what the? doesn't the stock type 3 1600 make 65hp.
I figured that most 1915 made around 130hp.❓
Ollie ·
Nah Vlad, 130 is a hell of a lot of power in a beetle!
Pobjob was telling me that a lot of tweaked (by which I mean tuned correctly) stock 1600 are only around 30-40bhp, if that.
ian.mezz ·
Yer Stan the man would be right on the money there with the HP as he has been building then for years😎
hellbugged ·
😂........always an amusing thread results, no matter how the question is asked at the beginning
Paulc1964au ·
So if i decided to buy an engine off Stan would he want my 1600 twin port as an exchange or would he use the block off that?
vlad01 ·
is that at the wheels or flywheel? regarding Hp
Joel ·
vlad01 wrote:is that at the wheels or flywheel? regarding Hp
Thats where alot of people are crossing wires in this thread
the figures Ian mentioned were all at the wheels so to give you a fair comparison a stock healthy 1600 twinport is generally goood for 42-45 hp at the wheels
power to weight is a huge bonus in a bug, it really doesnt take much to get the moving
the engine in mine was 142hp stock, would have a little more now with the exhaust and intake so is probably aroung 105-110hp at the wheels and its enough to emabarrase anything N/A 6 cylinder and probably even keep up easily with a V8
its doing 0-100 in 6.5 which is only half a sec slower than a current VE SS but with that much power you seriously need to think about brakes and suspension upgrades
vlad01 ·
ah at the wheels. I always take my specs at the flywheel. no wonder all these numbers looks so small to me.
PAZZAN ·
serious high hp bottom end 4sale
fish26 ·
That is a pretty hardcore bottom end from Pazzan, I would think long and hard about paying 6K for 1915 with 65-70 hp or 7.5K for 100 hp, another way to go about it is talk to deluxe66 about a T4 conversion or get yourself a T4 engine kit from Jake Raby and have someone local put it together eg. find a 2L case, get a set of 96mm K/B pistons, a nice trick cam and lifter combo, good set of heads, exhaust, dells, Sharpbuilt, Cali or DTM upright kit and go have fun............just some more food for thought.
matberry ·
100 hp at the wheels is 'relatively' easy to get, the issue is, making it last street/daily use at the same time....that's where the $$$ come into it.
I've recently built two 78mm stroker engines, with the mildest of cams, both are over 100 rwhp and both get better economy than their previous engine that were only 1600cc, one even had the stock carb !!!
The thing is with this forum, (and I'm not complaining here) is that the readers aren't getting the full story due to the posts only being able to be positive...or they get deleted, therefore many truths of who or where to get your engine built or of issues people have experienced may not be fully disclosed publicly.
fish26 ·
Matt, thats being diplomatic to say the least. There is a lot of misinformation all over the place, some people don't know what they are talking about and some people I wouldn't trust to change my oil let alone build my engines not including the two parties mentioned.
Too many building too tame an engine........................if you build it, build it once and with a bit of balls and then just tone it down.
cnfabo ·
just get a damn pobjoy base engine..will be fun,fun,fun....and realy reliable....

cnfabo wrote:just get a damn pobjoy base engine..will be fun,fun,fun....and realy reliable....
Why Chris, didn't your engine come from Rodney?
Have you had a Pobjoy base engine too?
cnfabo ·
i wanted more power thats all...if i wanted a fun engine that would run no probs for ten years i would of went a base for sure..
na havent owned one, but have been in one and a steroid many years age...the base was great.and well what can i say about the steroids....loved it....
