When to fill your fuel tank

A question thats been in my head for a long time but never really thought to ask.
However now I have a car that requires 98 ron petrol馃檯

My question is, when should you fill your petrol tank, and how full should it be kept?

One would think that logically a car with half a tank of petrol will require less throttle to get it up to speed and thus be more fuel efficient than a car with a full petrol tank.

Thought Id get your opinions as my Golf has a... slight overfueling issue meaning Im having to fill up every 2 or so weeks (300km) with bloody expensive premium unleaded馃槵

Thanks

The 20kilo's or so in half a tank of fuel will not make any difference in performance.

If you want to save money & if you drive your car all the time fill it up when the petrols cheap.馃槀馃槀

Your car is a 5 seater as well does that mean that you don't want to carry passengers to be more fuel efficient.

yep when the petrol is cheap hehehehehehehe

You're splitting hairs over the half/full tank throttle/economy thing it doesnt make all that much difference in the scale of things especially in a smaller car like a Golf

a bit of extra wieght in the front of the bug helps abit though.
In answer to your question i usually fill when i get to about 1/2 a tank or abit below but I never run any of my cars below 1/4 of a tank.
best way to upset electric fuel pumps and block injectors

that said some of my mates cars the low fuel light is never off 馃お
I wouldnt even have a clue if mine works, never run it that low 馃槀

What the price stays the same all week? Down here it's cheaper by about 10c a litre early in the week.

how much is up your way anyway?

ryana89 路

The only time Ive seen the price go down is after the school holidays (as its already been raised) are over.
But Ill go and check everyday for the next week or so and see what they do.

$1.29 ULP
$1.42 PULP (98 ron)

vlad01 路

yeah same as kyneton vic.
bendigo is around 1.23 ULP

haha melbourne is around 1.35 to 1.40 ULP I hear from a friend who works there.

Keep your tank as full as possible, this will help keep condensation out of the tank along with the usual low fuel problems, yes it is a pain in the ass but a little foresight will save you a lot of grief.

You've got nothing to worry about then. Only couple of bucks difference to me. If you're gonna live 500kms from the source you gonna have to take a hit. It's the price you pay for the lifestyle. Shit, I sound like my boss when I ask why my pay is less than Sydney pay.

Wollongong regular fuel fluctuates from about $1.24 to $1.34 on a weekly cycle, but occasionally there will be a 15 cent overnight bump. Happens at every servo in Wollongong at the same time on the same day, but theres no hint of collusion there you conspiracy theorist you.

Cheap day used to be Tuesday and would go up Wednesday morning. Everyone used to buy on traditional thursday payday though, until the last dramatic price hike. Everyone switched to buying on tuesday only, so the cheap day has now changed to wednesday night/thursday morning. World oil prices must jump at about 10am. People are still queueing on Tuesdays though. Humans are weird creatures of habit.

I fill up thursday mornings or when the trip computer says I have less than 20km left. Though twice I have been on 0km for several kms and still not had any fuel surge. Good surge tank or pessimistic tripppy? I guess one day I will find out.

Nice one Pauly, you made my morning 馃槀

vlad01 路

hey you can even save by sanding all the paint off. thats about 8kg.

I managed to strip off around 75Kg of my commy.

list.
auto to manual conversion - 30kg
mud flaps -6kg
towbar -15kg
A/C -10kg
front floor mats -5kg
cast manifolds to extractors -6kg
copper to alu radiator(was forced to, it broke't) -3kg

other little things too like boring out the throttle body, pulling out some rubber trim around light, peeling off pin stripes etc...

another thing you can do to save on fuel is go on the dole, break your car. works every time 馃榿
