hey guys

Well about to take ownership of my new type 3 and had a question from the insurance company regarding an alarm. The car is totally stock atm but i was thinking an alarm with central locking and remote start would be a nice feature if its installed stealth.. I know its not classic but very usefull as i want this car to eventually by my daily.. Id like to be able to start it up 5 mins before i leave in the morning to let it warm up.. And central is always a bonus..

Whats you guys thaughts on this ?? Its currently 6volt so im assuming id have to have that converted 1st. How much does this normally cost ??

Cheers Vice. Looking forward to your thaughts.

Bizarre ·

I had one put in - only so as my insurance was valid
Brandt immobiliser - $450ish 6 years ago

Donno if it works

Care in where you park is more important

vicelore ·

Did they install central locking mechanisims ?

Cheers Vice

Bizarre ·

nah - they could have but it is all money

My lock do dad thing you pull up and down is pretty stiff
I fould really need to free that up before central locking would work

vicelore ·

How do you guys feel about it in a ethical sence.. Are these creature comforts frowned apon in the VW scene ? There is so many things i want to do like steros and stuff that i really need to think about having installed with class and not just function with this new car..
In my previous rides they where Riceer style cars so subbys and bling where something to show off. I think i want the non origional features hidden on this car..

Cheers Vice

vlad01 ·

yes so would I. I hate speakers and cd player in dubs.

look at it!😬 what idiot would put big ugly chunky speakers there. I keep kicking them off every time I get into and out of the car. The cd player and those fugly speakers are going in the trash, well maybe the player on ebay 😉
I much prefer no sound systems in my dubs with antenna delete plug.

vicelore ·

Thats the thing im really into music so a car without a stereo is out of the question for me.. I just want it all stealth in the Dub..
And OMG they are horrible man.. I would of ripped them off the day i got them haha..

Cheers Vice

Vice, you're the one who is gunna be paying the bills and driving the car. So who gives a f*#@ what other people think. Put what ever you want in the car 👍
Will be watching this thread as I want to put an alarm in one of my cars.

vicelore ·

HAHHA good point Simon.. If the car i was buying was a shitter id have no worries at all with drilling holes etc but this one is very very origional and very good quality..

Im dieing to modd it but having moral delemas about it.. Its the best base you could want to mod on but it probally deserves to live in a garage under a sheet for the next 45 years.. But then whats the point of it.. I think ill just do what i want but with the most minimal damage to origional parts of the car..

Cheers Vice

It may not be a pink paint job, Ian. I can remember seeing only 2 original late Aust. type 3's with a purple paint job... And both were Fastbacks (about '70 or '71). I think it may be one of the rarer remaining original type 3 paint jobs... Vlad may have the last one!

theres one company i wont be dealing with again.
one week out of warranty it shat itself and cost me 600 bucks to get it fixed which was basically a new control unit. was told too bad so sad by the manager.
bear in mind it took them 4 days to come out and have a look at it.

vicelore ·

Thanks for the tip Barls.. Ill steer clear of them..

I have an alarm and remote central in my L bug. Can't remember the brand though - had it fitted at Autobahn - it works great. One of the best features is a big solenoid they put in the bonnet catch - you can unlock the front as you walk up to the car using the smaller button on the remote, and get stuff out without unlocking the car or turning the alarm off. Once you close the front, the alarm for the front re-sets. Bit of a bugger if you don't lock it down, then come back later and open it without using the remote - very noisy. lol

68AutoBug ·

Hi

its far cheaper IMHO to install a $100 alarm or $200 alarm with remote start etc... than have one fitted out professionally... $600 PLUS..

unless You get a BIG discount off the insurance company..

check out Shannons Insurance...

My beetle is locked in My yard [garage/carport] every night
which saves Me money with Insurance...
I also live in the country..

If I lived in a city with no locked garage etc...
My insurance would be much more Expensive..

I've always had alarms fitted to My cars...
First ones were home made.. lol..
The one in My type 3 variant in the 70s was a key switch in the RHS next to the door handle.. [not in the door]
and I also had made a light fader, so when the door was closed My interior light would slowly go out...

so, when any doors were opened [with the key alarm turned ON] the alarm would go off... a Siren speaker under the front... when the door was shut the alarm would slowly go off.... lol

in later years, alarms got more sophisticated , with timers built in, and finally with remotes..

My Beetle has a remote alarm fitted by Me.. bought off ebay.
siren is nice and loud..
all blinkers flash ten times when I open a door..
siren beeps and lights flash when alarm is turned on/off...

I also have a VERY bright Blue LED on the dash...
lights up the inside of the car at night... flashing..

I can also turn My electric fuel pump off... hidden switch ..

My JVC CD player/Radio is set inside the dash....
would be very difficult to take out...

I also have remote door locks to fit at some stage...

electric windows would be great but expensive....?? difficult..

but remember if a thief cannot take Your stereo system...
He may just trash it....
same with Your car....

Holes in Your car.... can be brazed or welded up easily...

so, I don't mind drilling holes in My VWs... if necessary..
but I wasn't always like that.. lol

cheers

LEE

PS: from VW manuals.. to start a VW engine, press accelerator to the floor once to operate the automatic choke
then turn the key..

[if the auto choke is working OK.. adjusted OK.. ]

it's a nice pretty purple colour
I have an alarm but I don't know how it works.
So it goes off some times on it own and it wouldn't even wake me dog up anyway its that quiet.
Just take the coil lead off that's a good deterrent or a kill switch.

I've seen a lot of people put the stereo header unit in the glove box so you can't see it at all.

68AutoBug ·

I saw an old early MGTC the other day...
and yes the stereo system was in the glovebox... lol

Your alarm Rose, may have a sensor installed inside the car..

One of My sons used to install alarms in Porsches,Ferraris etc years ago and He told Me not to use them as they can be set off by the wind etc...
they are way too far sensitive...

they are made to go off if a window is smashed...

The best classic alarm i ever saw was in a Nissan pulsar and the customer used to set it every time he came in for service,as soon as you opened the door it shrieked "Burglar Burglar" until either the battery went flat or he came back to disable it.Gees we were glad when it shat itself.

Joel ·

Remote start wont be any use on a carby car., theyre designed for modern fuel injected engines and generally automatics too.

Ive had a couple of alarms in mine over the last 10 years. mostly Rhino systems

I've got a cyclops/dynamco in the mainstreamer and hate its stupid safety features.

I cant remember what brand is in the bug now but like Jeff I've got it hooked to my central locking for remote keyless entry and also remote boot release as well.
Great in rainy weather like we're having at the moment not having to get soaked unlocking the door with the key

Really spins people out seeing an old vw with remote entry

vicelore ·

Looks like it will be a goer for me then..

Cheers Vice..

I installed a no-name remote control alarm/immobiliser which I bought from Jaycar for about $50. Heaps of features - rolling code, motion detector, cut wire alarm, separate battery for the siren, *loud* siren with isolation key (for servicing), immobiliser, automatic door lock, handbrake switch, all-black wiring etc. etc. Best part was that it is also capable of controlling remote locking devices, so shortly after I installed 3 remote lockers for about $20 each, also from Jaycar. It all works a treat. In a Bay transporter of kombi there's plenty of room under the dash and in the doors, so installation was not difficult; probably tighter in a Type 3, definitely harder in a split kombi (door space) or Type 1. The installation took me about a day in total, most of that in disassembling and reassembling the door trim, locating the remotes and adapting some bits and pieces.

Vice I've been thinking of doing the same thing in my square. The car is for my wife to get the kids around daily so mods aimed at making life easy makes sense. I figure so long as I'm not making changes to the body that are difficult to reverse then why not?

For the stereo I got a retrosound from CIP1. Dunno if you have heard of them but they look like an old one but modern internals with sub output, mp3 & USB etc. Instructions say not to plug in iPod through USB but to use the AUX jack but I will probably test it both ways. I haven't installed it yet as have been too busy sorting motor issues to get it running reliably. Made a start on the interior too so I have no idea when I will get around to fitting it. You can get speaker kick panels too if you want to put front speakers under the dash on the wheel arches, I'll be doing that so I don't need to cut my new door trims.

Yes,
Mine gives out a Very Loud BEEP or Chirp when the alarm is activated or switched off... [along with flashing lights]

and people outside the local Woolworths...
get a bit of a fright ... coming from an old looking car.. lol

Mine may be a Rhino.. alarm.. also can use on doors etc...
but they are all still in the box... lol

LEE

PS: People say take your rotor out, but I find that a fairly difficult thing to do each time I went somewhere.. lol
plus its something I don't do randomly...

pulling the centre plug lead nearly out would be better..
or coil lead..
Not opening the engine lid at all.... is better.... lol
