Australian Type3s 1964-1968

After the debacle of me telling vicelore his car looked like a 1965 1500 when it is a 1967 1600 and a very original as well. I was thinking we could start a thread or possibly a sticky the shows the differences between these Australian cars and German ones. I think the Australian-produced type3s started at the end of July 1963. When did the CKD cars start? 1500s says 1969.

I have an as original as you get these days 1966 1600TS Fastback VW Model 312s first registed 11/66. I've read the first Australian Fastys were April 66. My dad had an earlier one than me back in the day (Black red interior😎)body No.316151435. Regested 9/66. Who has the oldest?

I could show some pics of what my fasty has. Vicelores car looks to be a great example of a 67 Notch and I'm sure 1500s has a heaps of stuff he could show us.

Good to see posts like this so we can get info on our Type 3s. Not sure if I actually said 1969 for CKD but from Phil Matthews, to save you all sifting around looking for info, see:

====================================================================

1968
VW Australasia announces that Australian VW manufacture would cease immediately, and all future VWs would be either CKD assembled or fully imported. The $50 million investment in the Australian plant was written off. The useful machinery, tooling and equipment is sold to VW’s other factories in South Africa, Mexico and Brazil. Other general equipment is sold to Holden and Ford. The Clayton plant was completely stripped out, and refitted for CKD assembly only.

The Deluxe Australian Beetle ends in March, and is replaced by fully imported German-made 1500 Beetles, in both manual and semi-automatic versions. Australian buyers effectively move from a 1961 to a 1968 Beetle in one month. New body shell, 53-bhp 1500cc motor, 12-volt electrics, ball joint front with twin-circuit disc brakes, new front and rear lights, safety dashboard, collapsible steering column, and many other changes. CKD kits arrive from September and local assembly of manuals begins, but semi-auto Beetles were to remain fully imported. The Australian Custom model continues to be built until all manufacturing ends in September.

The Transporter is upgraded to the T2 model, with full width curved windscreen, ball joint front suspension, four CV-joint rear suspension and 1600cc engine. These are locally assembled from CKD kits. The Type 3 range is also converted back to CKD assembly. The engines are upgraded to 1600cc across the range.

==============================================================

1969 however was when the Notch and Square had the extra "bright work" which the Fasty had from 1966.

Great 1500S. So should my post say 1963-1967? Is there Aussie cars like vices with a 318 body No.? Or did they sell 317 body No. cars into 68 to use them up? When could you buy a CKD car?

Would have been great if actual "first month of delivery" was able to be given instead of just year in our history although the number does give a close approximation. I have read on here somewhere that the chassis numbering system we had was unique to Australia but the info on The Samba gives the same numbering system from 1964. Was the unique ones only to do with the Panel Van Type 3?? I thought there was something like that but???????? Even though I owned a 1964 Notch and 1967 Square OZ produced/assembled as well as two 1972 Squares, I was more focused on the imported models of 64 and 65 back then but could never find one in one piece for sale.. I actually hated the pre 64 imported Notch and Square due to the total lack of shiny trim and the horrible interior. I say that due to the fact that within 3 years the cloth seat material was falling apart. The vinyl stuff in the 64-65 imports didn't survive much better and within the 3-4 years was starting to split. I was only generally interested over the 40 odd years of trim differences, especially between imported and locally produced ones.

One thing for sure is that some of the Type 3 range in the early years are about as rare as early Bugs. In the case of the imported "S" there may be as few as 3 notches left in the country which are serviceable. There may not be any Variant S vehicles left even if they were imported into the country.

An interesting subject, even if it is only for us Type 3 Junkies!!

Vice what would be good to see on here from your car is Body No. and engine No. or most of them. Does any one know why Vice should not put the whole lot on here? In QLD I drive around with my body No. on my rego label. Also I'd like to see pics of

The body colour
Interior
1600 badge on the deck lid
Is the engine a twin port? Interesting any how
Hub cap because there not painted in the centre like my 66

Yes all true and I used to think the same way but world wide a 1500s is no where near a rare as Vices car.

My notch has 318022648 stamped on tunnel and compliance plate. Says "Made in Germany" on the plate but I am told it was built in Australia.

Was purchased new in Jan 1969 from Lanock motors in Sydney according to the logbook.

Had drum brakes all round on wide 5's, factory 12 volt, fuel filler under bonnet, black wiper knob and headlight knob to name a few.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else that was perhaps out of place.

Cool I'd heard of 12v cars like that but didn't know they were 68. A pic of the dash would be great!

I think you will find that most, if not all Type 3 compliance plates have Made In Germany on them regardless of which country they were made/assembled in. Your 68 would be one of the unsold ones still on the floor in 69 after the new model came out and was most likely sold with a good discount. There were maybe a few earlier than 69 vehicles imported which had the disc brakes but generally accepted they were here on the 1969 model along with the double joint rear end and first full auto gearbox. The locally assembled ones were using up the scrap box with all the drum brakes etc in them. Anything unique on these vehicles generally only belongs to Australia.

I have recently asked on the samba about the number tag spot welded to the body that is behind the spare wheel. Nobody knew anything about it so I guess it's an Oz thing/body number ?

Type3lover I thought all 68 were 4 stud wheels? mine is 318200071 so not much newer than yours. 4 stud wheels, 12 volt, discs up front, heated seats etc 😉

I just looked a my fasty and it has the plate as well. I think you are right body number, mine starts with 312 Fastback. I never noticed it was a different number to the pan.

Apparently at the end of Aussie cars they made many variations. Does your car have a fuel flap?

I have the fuel flap that you open with your finger.

I did not realize until a week ago when I saw a FB that the later cars also have a flap release cable under the dash. All modern conveniences in 1970.

Good read guys

I have I believe a '69 model notch with the disc front, IRS rear and 4 stud wheels and I drive it every day.

Cruiser I am guessing that your car with the fuel flap that you open from the out side like a 68 beetle, 4 stud discs and heated seats is a CKD car because that body No. does seem like an Aussie thing and not a fully imported car. Type3lovers cars spec is like Aussie cars with 12v.

Up till now I've been wrongly calling the Chassis No. the body No. From now on, on here to stop confusion I think we should call it by its correct name and the body No. the one behind the spare tyre on the body. Who can tell us about this number?

Cruiser I wonder how far your body No. is from Type3lovers?

1500S ·

Just found time to add a bit. These are a couple of pics but only relate to the imported 1964 model Notch. The one of the body compliance plate has different weights to the 315... one. I'm not sure where I got the 315.... but no doubt was from a wreck around Riverstone about 10 years back.

I've also added one of the master cyl reservoir area in my Notch. Note the large "3". Have no idea what it refers to. Maybe a die number for the pressing?? Also looks like the panel was getting ready for a dual circuit brake setup in the next year or so.

This 0474050 body is matched to the chassis so all original. The sister car only a few numbers away was sold in Victoria on fleabay a couple of years ago and is in Adelaide. It will never be on the road as a restored one as it was too far gone.

What we have to get into our minds regardless of whether there are similar vehicles worldwide as some others suggest, we are on a big island and what we have here is fact and any rarity relates to here alone. Some of these facts in relation to Australian registered Type 3s are:

1. There are very few pre 1964 Notch and Squares left

2. There are most likely similar numbers of the 1965 Australian Twin S hanging around somewhere.

3. There are fewer imported Notch 1500S. Two only known to be roadworthy in Australia from Adelaide to Brisbane.

4. Where are the imported 1966 Fastys?? Anyone seen one and have a current photo? These were the ones with the continuing early model locking steering column before production with Mr El Cheapo Australian version.

Let's see what we can produce now with pics and sightings of vehicles from the earlier years which are still or can be made drivable. It will also help future Type 3 interested Veedubbers know what they are looking for, even if during the mid to later 60s the OZ produced ones varied a bit due to them being put together from the left-overs rack!

vicelore ·

Which number you talking about here.. as far as I knew there was a number on a plate in the front under the bonnet and one under the back seat... These are both meant to match ? And a number on the engine is there more that im missing ?

Whats this fuel filler flap ??

Cheers Vice

1500S ·

Someone has said there is also a separate number somewhere behind the spare wheel. Has your car got this 3rd number there? My one doesn't have any other than the compliance aluminium plate and under back seat.

Just another thought. Maybe the header should read "Australian Type 3s 1964-1968" as the 63 model was a fully imported one.

Yes 1500s I thought that may confuse people. I put 1963 because I read we started making them here in July 1963, I suppose you would know these as 64 models. Maybe it should say 1964. Also I love Fully imported cars and when ever i seen one it is a real treat. I do own a fully imported type3 as well.

Vice pull your spare tyre out and look at the painted plate behind that an tell us the numbers. Mine starts with 312.

Will do when i get home tonight..

Ill also take some pics of all my plates..

Shhhhh Lee, that's showing our age too much!

Burelli. Yep, should be 1964 as anything classed as a 1963 would be the imported Notch with a totally different interior than the locally produced ones from August 1963 as being the normal changeover month. The locally produced one costing about 100 quid ($200) less for the privilage of discarding all the nicer looking inside and overrider bumpers in exchange for a chrome strip down the side, butt freezing (winter) and cooking in summer vinyl seat covers and dangerous non locking front seat backrests!

What about a pic of your car on here for reference? Inside as well.

DH

Burrelli ·

I took some today and I have only posted photos a couple times years ago, so I'll have to retrain myself when I get home.
Tried to get the car out in the sun but the 6v battery is a bit down and it would not go. Then a fuel line leak, it's the cloth covered stuff and not 3 years old but it's all perished and had it.

A tip for all people that don't know always make sure your rubber fuel lines are all good. Mine are not that old and the car could have had a big fire to day!!!!
Fuel lines are one thing that must be always maintained on any VW.

Guys,

This has developed into an interesting thread and not being a Type 3 devotee of any strength I was hoping the following information may be of assistance to the discussion. The numbers are extracted from the ex Factory Clayton production numbers for all vehicles manufactured in Australia.

Aussie production volumes for early Type 3s out of Clayton up to the end of 1968 were;

316N Notch 1011 units from 1/66 to Dec/68
316S Notch 9645 units up to Dec 67 ( Nil 316S were produced in 1968
312S Fastback 6168 units up to Dec 68
366 V31 Squareback Variant 9264 units to Oct 68
366 V30 Squareback Variant 516 units to Aug 66 when last one was produced. (Not sure what the V30 option was but could have been sunroof.)

There was a number of 1600 imported units with 4 of the EA197 Models in the country and through production by August 1968.Volumes started to pick up in September with 149 units completed on the production line and ready for sale.
Hope these numbers assist.

Type3lovers car must be a 316N and the V30 could that be one built to carry more weight? or a 1500n maybe?

V30 is the Panel Van.

58camper ·

Wow,
If the V30 was the Panel Van I would never have thought there were 516 of them produced at Clayton
Total production for V30 in 1966 was 61 units so that meant the other 455 were produced prior to December 1965.
How many panels still exist if there were 516 units produced. ?
Makes them rarer than the Country Buggy where 878 units were produced for the Australian market.

Great Vice.

What I know about these numbers is.

The Chassis No. on the Vin plate the first 2 digits means type3 the 3rd means 1967

The Body No. 316 means Notchback

The Engine No. T0 means 1600 Type3 and that would be a 1967 engine.

Anyone know more about these numbers?

I was just reading Aaron Britcher's fantastic sticky tread on samba " Type 3 Panel Van Nirvana" and in it he said V30 Panel Vans are CKD. In it also, there is information about Panel Van Body Numbers. If you have a 65-66 Squareback and your Body No. starts with PV you have a Panel Van!!!!

RB.

Burrelli ·

This is a fuel flap from a 69 on Type3 that you open from the inside of the car with a pull knob. A 68 fuel flap has a finger indent and you open it from the outside of the car.

If your car has one of these it is a CKD or fully imported car.

Vice is your car single port or dual port? Because they changed over late 67

On a single port the carb manifolds are a 40mm diameter pipe that goes into a single port in the head.

A dual port has a cast manifold that splits into 2 and is about 100mm wide where it bolts to the head.

How many panels still exist if there were 516 units produced. ?
Makes them rarer than the Country Buggy where 878 units were produced for the Australian market.

Hi
I can't remember seeing many panel vans in the 60s or 70s..
they all looked like aussie made...
from other forums.. it appears that maybe??
Most panel vans were made in Australia ???

the ones I've seen photos of are all RHD and made in Australia

although seems strange that Wolfsburg never made them??

Did all Aussie 69 models have the flat [rare] hubcaps on 5 stud wheels with the stainless steel wheel trims??

{ I believe German made 67 model beetles also had those flat hubcaps on 5 stud wheels..]

Some VW owners have the fuel flap[door] welded over and fit an early fuel tank... lol

cruiser. I've done a bit of home work. Your car is at the start of the CKD production. It has different pressings to the 64-68 aussie cars. Production of the CKD (Complete Knock Down? 8 crates to 12 cars or something like that) packs of the EA197 (type3) started OCT 68. The German model year starts Aug for Type3, so your cars CKD packs must have left germany before that.

I have no idea how your car got the heated seats but I would like to see pics. 😎

Oh yeah that body tag must of been put on by a good old Aussie on friday arvo😂

During the 60s I did see a couple of type 3s with dome caps but these were widened bug wheels with the clips on them to hold the domes. Even with only 1" wider on these wheels, tyre rubbing could be a problem on the rear guards remembering that the normal widening technique was splitting the rim just outside the disc and welding a band in. I had a set of the later but wide 5 bug wheels with the slotted disc widened but were only 5" so the flat standard caps could be used. Even using the standard 165 tyres there was little room between tyre and guard.

Bugs looks like they got the flat hubcaps in Germany in 1966.

Type 3 hubcaps were always flat.
4 stud rims were standard from the 1969 model on in Australia ( and also a few late 1968 aswell according to cruisers notch)
69 models used 4 stud hubcaps same as > 68 beetles
I think 67 beetles in Germany were slotted wide 5, with similar or same flat hubcaps as 1965 type 3's without the clips.
The type 3 aluminium wheel trims are also different to the type 1 due to the different offsets so are not interchangeable,
Cheers.

As 318022648 stamped on tunnel and compliance plate on Toby's Notch makes the parts built between August and September 1967 which makes it an actual 1968 OZ model with correct wide 5s still. More likely a CKD kit left hanging around in storage and finally got put together during 68 before August. By the time it hit the showroom floor, the word would have been around that the new 69 model with discs and double joint rear end was here in August 68. A discounted old technology model early in 1969 but certainly wouldn't have been built in December 1968!

The 1500N did have the single side draught carb as did the 1500A which continued to 1968 in other parts of the world, maybe even Australia. Some repair manuals even list a 1600A. Did this 1600A engine have the single carb with single port heads still?? Some of you may recall maybe mid 90s Volksworld Mag?? had a story about "Plain Jane" which from memory had the single carb 1600 and drum brakes up front. But then again to confuse us more, a British site gives the Type 3 1600A as having a single carb 1500 engine!!!!!!!! Anyone still got that mag??

The Type 3 got disc brakes in 66, even on the 1500 Notch hence the 4 stud wheels and the resulting "new" hubcap fixing. We saw none of these here... well maybe a couple of imports. We should be able to find plenty of early hubcaps but just try finding really good ones.

We know the Fasty got the 1600 engine with twin carbs right from square one in 66 and the Square got the 1600 twin carb dual port in '67 sometime but none of our cars got the discs generally until '69.

One thing we have to be careful of is not to compare much of the local production trim and some running gear with that of full German assembly as we actually made the basic version in most cases.

My 67 imported beetle has those(although not still on the car, they were superceded by genuine Gasburners!).
Lets clear this up right here and now...

That nipple 4 stud hubcap was on German built models from chassis 316000001 up to 317139332 and is part number 311601151B. It then went to part number 311601151D which is the conventional 4 stud hub cap as we know it from chassis number 317139333. 66/67 german built beetles had the same up to about Sept/October 1967 and then went to the non nipple 4 stud hub cap.

Also of worthy note is the fact that German built type 3's, type 3 ghias and Type1 ghias had wheel trims as standard equipment, part number 311601155 from beginning of 4 stud production in August 1965...

so a certain Pigalle owner on here should have both the nipple 4 stud hub cap and the correct wheel trims which will be marked "CK VW 311601155"around the inner perimeter and have the grey plastic grommet in the valve hole as per all genuine wheel trims...

Australian built Type 3's had the flat early 5 stud hub cap through to 1964, part number 311601151. Australian 65-67 models had the Euro beetle flat 5 stud hubcap part number 131601151(looks like an early type 3 cap but with rounder edges when compared to an early one). They went to the conventional 4 stud cap 311601151D as we know them in 1968.

VW-VARIANT-L ·

My original Aussie 1965 1500S came with the early flatter hubcaps with recessed VW emblem in the centre, so probably some delay in the change over of parts. Another way to tell the later 5 stud caps is the raised VW emblem.

I know of 2 pigalles still in Australia, a Type 3 ghia in NSW and a Fastback in Vic, both with original nipple caps I think 😉

That car is a "twin S". It is not an import. There were Australian built Sea Blue cars, just not many of them. Have seen that car in the flesh and I must say that the body is not half bad on it. Reasonable money for the car that it is... It is all there too but needs tidying. Surprised it hasn't sold yet.

That black notch doesn't look like an import either.... An aussie model with overriders added.

Good lad!!😂 Do you know I sat on a NOS ignition switch/lock for my notch for a few years. The one in it worked great after I mixed a key barrel and the electrical part by machining a couple of internal bits. Someone up north wanted a switch for an early one so pulled it for him and used the NOS one.

Still got a spare NOS indicator arm!

Here is one to rock the boat. My 69 Squareback. IRS. according to my December owners manual large rear lights were optional.

VW-VARIANT-L ·

Is your 69 wagon an auto or manual ? Can you list the first 3 numbers of the compliance plate and chassis number on the tunnel ?
It seem's to be a bitsa, with a 1968 front guard, and 1970+ rear guards and bumpers.
The larger tail lights were first used for the 1970 model year in Germany along with the square bumpers, which makes them impossible to have been fitted on a wagon built between 8/68 and 7/69. 69 wagons were also assembled in Aus from CKD kits sent over from Germany so should have been complete for the model year specs, and usually had the wrap around blinkers on the front.
Would also be interested in seeing a pic of your manual reference re. large tail light option .

Edison ·

I hear ya. I've owned a 68 fasty and a 70 wagon before. Chassis number is 36220651XX. This is manual,
The owners manual is all over the place. Shows late and early feature. Sorry bout the crap photo. But you can see under the tail lights it says Optional extra.

The manual says December 69 on the inside and shows high back seats and big indicators on the cover being 71 on i think

Edison ·

White cards and seats as shown in the manual. The front seats are early 60's replaced by previous owner.

1500S ·

Edison wrote:Here is one to rock the boat. My 69 Squareback. IRS. according to my December owners manual large rear lights were optional.

By all accounts that car is a 1968 model as the fuel filler door is opened from the outside. A true 1969 has the release inside under dash. The bumpers and rear lights are off a 1970 (August 1969 release) or later. A 1969 has the overrider bumpers and also wrap around front indicators.

Someone has bolted later rear guards on as well as later bumpers on it as Variant L has pointed out.

However, the body may just be a 1969 and a previous owner has changed the front guards to earlier to use the bullet front indicators and the rears to have integral reversing lights as well as de-chroming most of it. Have a look under the right dash and see if there's a hole where the pull release for the fuel door was.

DH

Edison ·

Checked and no hole for the pull release although the carpet is trimmed for it. Will early rear guards and bumpers bolt straight on?? This is not the first 69 Squareback i've seen with nipple indicators.

empi ·

Edison wrote:Checked and no hole for the pull release although the carpet is trimmed for it. Will early rear guards and bumpers bolt straight on?? This is not the first 69 Squareback i've seen with nipple indicators.

yes they will , yr car looks to be a bitsa, sounds like the floorpan may have been changed too, (3rd digit 2 = 72)

empi ·

A photo of the dash would help too, 68 still had the 3 fresh air vent levers 69 had two balck 12v knobs

1500S ·

Edison wrote:Checked and no hole for the pull release although the carpet is trimmed for it. Will early rear guards and bumpers bolt straight on?? This is not the first 69 Squareback i've seen with nipple indicators.
The guards will bolt straight on. One of the fellows in Canberra (Andy ?) had late guards on the rear of an early square as he seemed to like the bigger lights.

There have also been a few 69s with the early tank put in and the exterior filler hole welded up "for security reasons". There was a red one from Newcastle area done that way.

Never think that some things "came out of the factory" as being true as 40 years on, anything can and have been changed to suit the later owners likes.

If you want it to look a real 69 you need to change the bumpers, front and rear guards for the correct tail light/front indicators/side marker lights, put the chrome strips back on the sides and add the bonnet trim. Only you can decide if the cost is worth it.

half true Adam, most of the 68's were old model spec with 5 stud, filler under hood and 3 vent levers, but the German CKD or imports have the black knobs.

I suspect this is a 69 wagon with a 68 front guard and 72 pan, guards and bumpers rather than a German 68 ( the compliance plate number would tell).

The December 69 manual is for the 1970 model year, and most of the manuals still have earlier photos with the descriptions. The 69 model manual still has the smaller raised taillights.

The "* optional extra" reference for the late models is for the rear reversing light, which wasn't standard fitment ( the bases came without the socket, wiring, and no switch in the transmission).

You're right about the bullet indicators as all the pre-70 squarebacks in USA have bullet indicators as standard. Only late 68 CKD/1969 squares have wrap arounds in Australia, but quite a few have been replaced with bullets, thought of doing this myself.

Edison ·

haha. I was waiting for the dash photo request. I don't care if it is a 69 or not, that's just what the papers say it is. As i said before i've owned a 68 and a 70 and am well aware of the differences etc. But i would like to change the column and wheel to the old style if it will fit. Maybe it is a 72 with front guards changed and a 70 tailgate. There is a wiper arm on the column that is not connected. The key works on everything besides the (early 🙂) drivers door 😵‍💫

But your claim was "Here is one to rock the boat. My 69 Squareback. IRS. according to my December owners manual large rear lights were optional". By December 1969 the showrooms all had the new body style in them and any leftover early bodies were around the back somewhere to be sold off with great discounts. The fact is from the outside it looks nothing like a 69 square except that it's a short nose one. The dash now does show in fact it is a 69 but with a 72 on steering column. Also, can't be a 72 with changed front guards as they won't fit plus the 72 also has a different dash. As someone else says, it's a bitsa, but if you are happy with the looks then that's all that matters.

Maybe there is a problem in that it gets new Type 3 owners believing things associated with year identification which isn't so.

DH

Edison ·

Thanks for the info. Guess i was wrong about the rear lights being optional extra as i now hear it is the switch.

No doubt it's (69?) a bitsa.

Burrelli ·

It seems at the start of the CKD cars in late 68 (69 model year)there were a few German 68 spec cars with fuel flaps like that. I think these cars had bullit indicators, no over riders and swing axle. Interesting there is a car on ebay at the moment that claims to be a 68(bullits,no over riders) but has a 69 and latter type fuel flap.

These features are exactly what my 68 has.

Do Aussie stamped/pressed cars have a plaque that says "made in Australia"? If so then it's an easy way to tell an import/ckd car from an Australian made one?

Burrelli ·

I have not seen any Aussie produced type3s with "made in Australia" on the plaque. I think that is because that only 30%-40% of the cars were made in Australia so on the plaque it says "made in Germany". Cruser your car would still have a lot of aussie made componants like glass, starter motor, genorator ect. but not an Aussie pressed body. Aussie made beetles (1963-1968?) had "made in Australia" because they were up to 90% Aussie made.

Burrelli ·

Looks like an Aussie 67 with latter 4 stud wheels and brakes. I like the colour but I have not seen one that colour before.

Recently acquired this 1969 Type 3 Notch, hasn’t been on the road since 1978, had been sitting in a shed in Nelson, New Zealand until a few years ago.

History is as follows:

Notch is of Australia origin and was imported into New Zealand in 1976, it is registered as a 69 here in NZ and log book also shows reg in Perth as a 69, but chassis number indicates 68. - 318200052

It has the 4 stud wheels, 12volt and disc brakes up front, bullet style indictors, but still has swing axle rear and the early bumpers.

Also the fuel filler is the very early edition with no interior release, manually opened with a finger pull.

Have been wondering why it seems to be a mix of parts but the posts in this tread seem to explain the oddities of my one????

That's fantastic, on the road for 10 years and then in storage for 32 years. Love to see more pics of the interior.

I don't think it is a mix of parts, it's just how things were at the time they were built/assembled. My car (in Perth) is just 19 cars newer than yours 318 200071 and has exatly the same components.

Burrelli ·

Zimad that is a good looking car. These German 68 spec Australian 69 model cars must of been made as a batch. I don't how many was in a CKD batch of cars, does any one know? Squarebacks and notchbacks I have seen no one has come up with a fasty yet but there could be some?. Does your car have heated seats? or is cruiser's car unique in that regard?

zimad ·

Cheers, I will pop up some pics of the interior in the next few days, it has ember red interior, which is in pretty good nick, only drives door needs a bit of work.

The carpets have all been thrown out, as they were rotten, as you can see I have had to replace the rear left guard and the boot, as part of the rear of the car had been hanging out of the shed it was parked up in for the 30 or so years, and they had got pretty rusty.

Don't think it has heated seats, will have to check, would be cool if it did!!

The azure interior doesn't exist either...They are FOS. The pic getting around was photo shopped. Again, the only thing that came close was the 1961/62 Type 3 Ghia with the special order blue interior(this is where all the blue knobs and trim pieces came from) and the 66 model blue interior for which only the carpet and seat covers were blue, all other trim fittings were standard type 3, including the black dash, Only dash colours offered for the type 3 and type 3 ghia were black, brown and red(with the colours being 1966 only).

I met Aaron at the VW Nationals in 93 or 94 and he told me about the Panel Vans. We only talked for a few minutes and I wish more of what he told me sank in back then but from then on if one was in front of me I'd know what it was.

It's never been off the road for long;

Longest non running stint was while the type4 was being introduced to it, rear discs, efi & ecu and sway bars - 6mths

When the photos (April '10) were taken it was off the road for 4 weeks after destroying 4th gear. It then did 40,000km in 3mths (2000km every second weekend)- the only hiccup was a dead alternator and scoured piston barrel. Oh, and a cracked deep sump that took months of dripping oil to discover.

It does need some TLC, new barrel and the ecu re mapped. Yeah - the sump needs replacing too but for now gasket goo has stopped the leak.

There are some quick pictures of it in the thread in my signature (only got it a few days ago).

What details should I post up to confirm where my car was built? I have the VIN, and number i found behind the spare wheel. I also found "M-249 90 OKTAN" on my engine, which seems to of been an option engine that allowed the owner to run regular fuel. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=389547

Your car is an Australian 1500 Twin S. That is the way they came in Australia. The standard model had a single carb and the twin S had the carbs from a German 1500S. Aussie cars did not have the high comp pistons.

Hi Burrelli, thanks for that info. It clears a few things up.
Does anyone know how many Australian built 1500s' are still surviving to this day? I can't wait to get mine back on the road.
Cheers

well i have what seems to be an imported feb 63 notchback, push button dash, red needle guages, fuel filler under hood(even tho the front guard has been replaced with a 68 finger pull guard), funky factory interior... will probly be up for sale soon as its rather rusty and i need the space, if it doesnt sell then im gonna wreck it i think...

I just picked up my first VW, a '65 1500s notch.

I've been told on another forum that my car is a "1965 one year only Australian manufacture 1500S." which is pretty exciting

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Hi
Lucky You to find a 1500 twin S with an M option M249 which must mean a low compression engine as the normal 1500S from Germany had High Compression pistons etc
and needed high octane fuel....
not sure of the petrol rating of standard and super petrol back then....

where as the Aussie made ones were the Twin S....
with twin carburetors....

excellent... I'll have to look at the pics

You can usually tell the Australian type 3 halfback or notchbacks as they didn't have the large over riders as used on German 1500S models.

there are a few still about , You see them at VW shows..

RB.
The TS fastback was Australian Only...
The German Fastbacks were 1600TL ... and usually were fuel injected...
VW Australasia was in trouble by the end of 1967 so, CKD type 3s would have been in 1968...

local VW trained Mechanic went thru the Clayton factory and saw Volvos - Datsun 1600 - Type 3 - type 1 - all on the production line... they also assembled Mercedes trucks...
Not sure what year it was...

Only new at this stuff but weren't the first 2 years of Fastbacks just twin carb engines. Read somewhere that FI wasn't until 1968 even in Germany.

I think Aussie CKD Type3's started late 68 for the 69 model year and German Type3's had carbs till 68 like Rusty said.

Well it's my first VW so it's been interesting finding out all this information about my car. They've all been pleasant surprises also which is nice!
Would my car of been built from Australian pressed panels? I'm just amazed how little rust it has (none in panels at all and only two spots in the rear arches), and it's not as if the car has been pampered it's whole life. I'd figure anything that has come by boat is normally more prone to rusting?

Pretty certain the interior is different also?
Yeah, they're by no means "rare", but do seem to be uncommon. I've personally never seen any other Australian S models, but I'm looking forward to the upcoming VW shows so I can see some other cars for inspiration.

I thought I'd revive this thread.

I got some pics of Australian 68 type3's. Please correct me if I am wrong with any of this.

This is a Aussie 68 Fastback.
It has thin side chrome and no TS badge or parking light.
Volkswagen on the deck lid.
Still has wide 5 drum brakes( this one is missing its wheel trims)
This one is Diamond Blue.

Still has the fuel filler under the bonnet.

68 is the first year for 12V.

The head light and wiper switch knobs are the safty design and now black.

Also the cigarette lighter, gear stick, widow winders have black knobs as well as a black hand brake handle.

The interior is still simular to a German 66 deluxe with the vertical pleats on the door trim , Z arm rests and all one colour.

Here is a pic of a notch.

You can see the latter type fuel gauge with the symbols on warning lights. I think that is new for 68?

Notch and Square are still two tone interior simular to the German N model.

This car has white window winder knobs and two tone gear stick knob. Is this right for 68 Notchs and Squares?

I reckon the fasty is a 67, wrap around indicators, fuel filler under the hood, air control levers on the dash, early door handles, Z arm rests. Nothing says 68 to me.

Can't tell much from the notch pics. I notice that the quarter window has the lever style catches whereas my 68 has the ones with a round knob. That one also has air control levers in dash. Could be 67 too?

Check the VIN numbers if it starts 317 (it's 1967), if it starts with 318 (it's 1968). I think people often believe their rego details rather than looking at the VIN.

My car is 318 (1968) although my rego papers say 1969.

I think your car is a Very late German 68 CKD car sold in Austraila as one of the first batch of 69 model CKD cars.

These cars above are the last of the Australian built cars that were sold in 68. I think they would both have 318 chassis numbers.
