Classic Vee-Dub - Huh?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/84534/classic-vee-dub-huh

bnicho 路

Not happy. 馃檯

I ordered some parts from Classic Vee-Dub a week ago. I received an automated order confirmation.

They STILL have not charged my credit card for the parts, nor have the parts arrived.

Sent them e-mails twice last week, no answer. Tried to call them and the phone is constantly engaged. 馃槵

Is this simply typical of their service, or is there something going on???

Can anyone recommend an alternative supplier of front kick-panel speaker pods for beetles. I've run out of patience.

Cheers,
Brett,

t_tuffnut 路

Hi Brett,

I've has similar experiences with Classic Vee Dubs, and I have called in the past. George doesn't like to charge for parts that he has on back order or has to order in, so he usually waits until he has the complete order before charging it to your credit card.

It can be frustrating, but he has always been very accommodating over the phone - which yes, is just about always engaged.

Here is a good US site http://www2.cip1.com/ but you may be waiting a bit longer for the shipping.

bnicho 路

The least he could do is inform me if there is a hold up. He has my mobile, work phone and e-mail address.

It's not like I haven't made any attempt to contact him either. I've tried to call them at least ten times today and it's engaged every time. I've checked the phone number is correct three times, so I'm confident I haven't mis-dialled.

I wanted to fit the parts this weekend. It looks like that is unlikely.

Cheers,

beetleboy88 路

I ordered my speaker panels from classic. havent fitted them yet :S but yes i agree not the best service

matberry 路

This happens in busy shops I'm affraid to say, I know exactly what you mean. I also see it from both sides, (Classic is seemingly ALWAYS engaged) but his service is generally good.

Pauld 路

just remember this is a public forum, but yes our experience has been quite bad and as such use micks motors for everything, good service and they get it to darwin in half the time as anywhere else so far

pete wood 路

George runs 2 companies, which is why he can do parts as cheap as he can. I'm not saying he's perfect, no one is, but he set the shop up to give the scene the best prices available. That cannot be said for some of the other shops. Be patient.

Camo 路

That's a bugger about your parts and no contact. Maybe listen to what others have said about him taking the money out of your account etc.

I for one have been very happy with George, but I have the luxury of being able to drive there and buy parts. George has been more than helpful, ordered parts and I only pay once they arrive. He has exchanged things and even returned my money when I stuffed up and grabbed the wrong thing (in stock stuff).

I am only giving another side to the story and personally don't care where you buy your parts from. As others said, if you are not happy go and buy elsewhere.

I just don't think we should turn this site into an attacking of ones business and I'm sure there could be some liabilities re this. I fully understand what you and others have mentioned of similar things and are pissed off. And I'm sure you are not meaning to attack his business and stop others from going there, but this is what could be perceived.

Try calling him again and explain what you have said on here. If that doesn't work, send him an email canceling your items and tell him why and then buy elsewhere.

Good luck with it, Kev

bnicho 路

I finally got onto George a few mins ago. One of the items I ordered was out of stock, but will be in tomorrow. He reckons I should have the parts by the weekend. So I will go through with the purchase. I politely expressed my dissatisfaction with the lack of response, and we ended the call on good terms.

I'm not trying to damage anyone's business, far from it. I just want my parts, or to know why they are delayed. I don't think that's too much to ask.

I actually feared they had closed down or something. On a forum like this is sometimes the only way to find out news like that. It's happened to me before.

In the world of Minis I know who to deal with and who to not use unless I'm desperate. But with VW's I'm a noob. If a delay like this is normal, then that would be something I need to factor into any future purchases.

To give you an idea, I order my most of my parts for my Mini and Moke from one place. They are not always the cheapest. But I can order online with them, they usually have what I want in stock, or they tell me within a few business hours if they don't. Often I have ordered parts form them and had them in my hand well within 24 hours. Now that's what I call service. 馃憤

Cheers,

Camo 路

Hi Brett,

Good to hear you spoke with George.

I didn't mean that you were directly attacking his store and you were just concerned about your parts, I just thought others may alter their ways with what was being said throughout this thread.

I have spent a few thousand dollars with George, but still buy stuff from overseas. CIP1 are great and the fastest transport ever. I can get things quicker from them, than my mate can get a Holden part from Melbourne. Had things arrive in 4 working days after ordering.

Hope you see your parts soon and all the best with your car.

Cheers, Kevin

Camo is totally right and as pauld mentioned this is a public forum. But i too fully understand your frustration.
I have only had one encounter with George,i ordered around $500 dollars worth of parts(Cant remember what they were)
they never arrived contacted him and he said they were sent.2 sets of parts were sent, and after around 2 months of
waiting, our money was refunded and the parts were never seen. 馃檨 But i understand that owning a business of that nature
would be very undertaking and things do go wrong.i wish he would use his email tho,i really like alot of the stock that he holds.makes it hard not being able to travel down and have a look for your self.馃檨馃槀

I on a regular basis now, i order everything from micks motors, mick and I
know each other on a first name basis.I can order over email,(which suits my work hours),the delivery is terrific, and prices are
quite good.Although i have only spoken over email,i have found mick motors to be a very helpful and reliable business.
Glad you worked it all out brett.

Gave Micks a go and they bombed out on me twice. Went to george at classic to give him a go and we've spent around $4,800 there with only one hick up. That was with a faulty item. Got onto him next day and had the new part the day after.
George might be hard to get hold of, but he's always willing to go the extra mile to help you out.

ancientbugger 路

Lee, it's the double relay for the factory FI, already tried Micks though. Plus when I first came to Oz I used to work at Geebung just around the corner from Micks and used to pop in there from time to time, that was 22 years ago now, I moved to Noosa 17 years ago. When my sister brought the cabriolet over from the US (about 10 years ago) she had to take it to Micks for something, they must have had thousands of customers in there in the intervening time but Micks' wife said " do you have a brother that owns a buggy" Now I know there can't be too many tall good looking blond Londoners around but even though she remembered me馃槑

Does it matter, who cares? Always enjoy chatting with George, even when Bob calls he asks how i am.

I find a lot of people hard to understand on this forum at times?

We always try to get a lot of our parts from George, and think he does an awesome job. It's hard to keep everyone happy. The phone rings non stop, for those who's call gets answered straight away are stoked, those who's don't, whinge, so therefore there will always be a whinger whilst he's on the phone to someone else. If he hired another person to take calls, his prices would go up to cover that persons pay, therefore someone would whinge about prices going up, but another person would be happy about their call being taken. Who's to say that person who's been hired to take your call would know as much about VW's and parts are George would.

Honestly, persistance pays off, and i'm happy with the service and prices George provides at the end of the day and are happier to be keeping an Australian VW business alive!

matberry 路

Yep, good post Ash

Wingers about service.... I bet 95% are employees.
I've always ran my own business and know it's not just 'hire a secretary' What a ridiculous statement, $570/week pay ( that's the award minimum or somewhere near it) + super workers comp and holidays, call it $1200/week cost to the employer, then in reality they are only 50% productive so they need to make the shop $2400 each week to be profitable......and what do they say on the phone....a call for you George, someone needing details on the correct part to buy !!!馃檯

bnicho 路

matberry wrote:......and what do they say on the phone....a call for you George, someone needing details on the correct part to buy !!!馃檯
I disagree Matt. If I read the situation right, business in the VW parts world is pretty competitive.

How many sales has George lost to people who know exactly what they want, but cannot get through? I was in that situation. I only spent a couple of hundred with George, but I very nearly took that business elsewhere.

Look how many disgruntled people are in this thread. Imagine how much sales he has lost because he did not meet these people's expectations, so they went elsewhere next time?

It seems he is popular, but if his business is to continue to flourish employing someone to process the orders and respond to enquiries even part time would be a good idea. But in the end, it's his call because it's his business.

Cheers,

vicelore 路

He needs to get with the times and get a online store going... I was heavily into brewing last year and they have the same problems. And the most successufull buisness craft brewer. was the one with the best website.

It was always accurate and eliminated the need for calling..

Sounds like he could make allot of money with a simular setup.

Cheers Vice

MISS VDUB 路

So therefore must employ someone to maintain the website on a constant basis to ensure the inventory matches, big $$$$ and time needed there. Then people will whinge the prices have gone up to cover the costs. If i haven't gotten through on the phone, an email has always worked!

Actually thats not quite true. There is plenty of software available today that makes it very quick and easy to update a website.

But there is nothing wrong with his website as it stands. It's well maintained and shows the parts and often a price as well. Much better than most websites where they show a small collection without prices and rely on a call for anything else.

He will have to update his website at some stage one would think. It's the only logical decision. www.cip1.com has one of the most detailed volkswagen parts websites I have ever come across and is very easy to use. sure it may cost a bit to maintain and upkeep but surely if we are buying from cip1 which is in the USA than if Classic had a decent website maybe even the yanks would start buying VW parts from Australia! just think about it. Technology is being updated at a amazing rate and if you want to really succeed in business the only way forward is to keep up with the times. My 2 cents

I know that this is an old post, but I just thought I'd add my two cents worth.

I've ordered quite a few things from George over the past couple of month's, and have had really good service.
The parts have been delivered within days of ordering, and he even contacted me to advise that he could do better than the sites price on one of my parts. He said he was about to put them up as a "Special" in the next week - so he said he'd only charge me the "Special" price. A saving of around $100.00! He didn't have to do that, and I'm not too sure his competitors would have.

I guess we all have good and bad experiences with different suppliers - I just happend to have good ones with Classic Vee-Dubs and George so far.

I'm in Brisbane, so I do get most of my stuff from Mick Motors - but they can't always get what I want, or in a time I need to have them. Don't get me wrong, Micks are great - but if I need something "now", then you got to go to the shop that has it now (or within a day or so).

Sad to hear that some people have hassles with George, but I guess it's best to get it out in the open so he can rectify anything that may be fixable. (I know he reads this forum).

Have a great Christmas, and a Happy Bugging Year.

Again, digging up this old thread. Felt the need to add my experience with Classic Vee-dub.

+1 for unhappy customer. Wished I'd found this thread before I ordered from Classic Vee-dub.

Specifically rang before I placed the order online (phone constantly engaged), finally got through - checked parts were in stock beforehand, asked whether the parts would make it before the weekend (it was a Tuesday), George promised they would arrive by Friday. Had someone wait home all day to receive the parts on Friday (as he said they would arrive at my house faster than at my PO Box), parts never turned up. Had someone wait home all day Monday, still never showed up. Two full days wasted at home. My wife was pissed!

Wouldn't answer emails, couldn't get hold of on phone - finally a week later I got hold of him. Didn't apologise, didn't offer an explanation... nothing! Unfortunately he said he posted them yesterday as I was calling to cancel my order today, apparently going to take 4 days from Sydney to Adelaide.

All this to save $30 on the price I could have got them walking into businesses here in Adelaide to buy. NEVER again! I'm furious!

Ordered parts from one of his competitors in the same state as him at the same time - they arrived 35hrs later.

I noticed someone above said George reads this forum - I hope so, I wiill be steering WELL clear of CVD in the future.

SebastienPeek 路

AyeBee,

Who'd you go to in Adelaide? Just curious as to where I can head to if I do need parts that are local.

I've ordered from George and I was quite surprised with his service. Not as bad as you guys & girls are making out, he freely upgraded me to a 75 amp alternator but the only downfall was that the backing plates didn't match up and nor did the alternator stand. I guess that is what happens when you buy taiwanese.

George's prices are definitely competitive. Bloody cheaper than Just Kampers & Vollks. But waiting times are either really drawn out or the parts aren't even available, and when trying to call, engaged.

I've been using Vollks and Just Kampers Australia lately, very good service indeed. You can tell where my next pay cheque is going 馃槈

I'm not trying to hurt anyones business either. George sounds like a top bloke, but I understand the stress of running two businesses can get to people!

I agree Chris, hence why I'm still ordering my next parts from them.

Can't find them anywhere that compare to the same prices. Plus, Vollks nor Just Kampers Australia have the parts in stock.

MISS VDUB 路

Have always dealt with George, and have generally had my emails answered when I haven't been able to get him on the phone.

I have sent the same email twice within the past week with a large list of items I am chasing prices on. Sadly if he doesn't respond I will be sourcing my items from the U.S. 馃憥

SebastienPeek 路

Yeah, I asked him in the order notes to send me an email when he was ready to draw the cash out of my account.
Never got an email, just took the cash and received the parts two days later.

I'm not saying his service is terrible, just some sort of contact would have been greatly appreciated.
We'll see what happens with this next order.

As to George reading or looking at this site, he told me he very rarely sees it. I know the phone is usually engaged, but keep trying as I think it's your best bet. I have been in the shop many times and amongst serving customers the phone is always ringing.

Our thoughts too Paul, but Aussie business's need to clean their act up in regards to customer service. How many times do you have to try to give someone money? Seems they clearly have enough money and business to supply such poor service.

Had a look at Vollks.com but they don't stock anything we want which is a shame because I've heard good things about them.

AyeBee wrote:Again, digging up this old thread.

Adding further to my saga.....

Still nothing arrived this Friday at my house. Called CVD after lunch, asked where order was. George said he'd ring the courier company, took my mobile no and would call me back.

An hour or so later, still hadn't called me back - so I rang again. Was told he was still waiting for courier company to get back to him where the delivery was, and he'd call me back.

430pm eastern time, still hadn't called me back so thought I'd ring and find out...... no answer - guess he closed up early for the day.

This morning I rang him first thing - claims the company said they'll get here about Tuesday..... 2 weeks after I'd placed the order!! Find it hard to believe if George dispatched the
order like he said he did on Monday, that it's going to take over a week via courier to come from Sydney (I've had parts from the UK turn up quicker for another car I have). Either he uses the worst courier service in the country, or he didn't send it when he said he did. I'm guessing he only sent it yesterday after me constantly ringing him.

Cancelled my order, told CVD not to bother, and I'll buy them elsewhere. Still, no apology or explanation.

As MISS VDUB said, how many times do you have to try and give someone money? Sure, my order was only about $200, but had he delivered as promised, I would have spent much much more there.

Happy for those that have had good dealings with him, unfortunately the total opposite for me. Shame, considering his prices on some things are quite good. Guess if I want good service, I need to pay for it!

End rant.

I used to order from CVD up until late last year. The first 2-3 online orders arrived no problems, then i wasn't getting any email confirmations. I rang him a few times and he did send the items that week, but then it got worse after each order i made. I once got an email confirming my credit card had been debited but nothing shown on my statement. I rang him and he coudln't find the order i was talking about. Lack of emails, phone pick-up and online prices really let this store down. It has potential to be a great store as they have a wide range of products, but as others have said, he needs more staff.

I did have one really good experience with him. My starter had shat itself and every other store i contacted wanted me to send in my old starter for a swap as well. CVD had them in stock and i requested that it arrive the next day (friday) as it was for my daily driver and had no other transport. It arrived the following day so i was very pleased with the service that time. I have never stepped foot in the store so i cannot comment on face-to-face service.

MISS VDUB 路

Not all things listed on the site are available straight away. George sources most parts from the U.S and shipping has been slower than normal from the U.S to Australia lately. There are things that we have ordered and will have to wait for because of this. Some things are out of his hands, but he does his best.

We persisted because we are long time customers and I know it's appreciated by him. Agreed frustrating if you are impatient like me, but worthwhile all the same. Keep calling!

surfpig 路

i refuse to call when you order online, simply because you ordered ONLINE.

I've never ordered online, always call and speak to the man. That way you know if it's in stock, and if not, a rough ETA. Seller can't post something that isn't in stock. Old fashioned service like a phone call tells you everything, never assume and past judgements. Never trusted online ordering, if I do, I usually follow it up with an email at least to ensure it's worked.

I'm sure he is fully aware of what is being said on AVD Lee.

I've never had a drama with CVD. Hard to get hold of on the phone yes, but keep trying and you will get through.
Tried other stores which can't seem to get anything right so we stay with CVD.
Yes he is a 1 man band. to keep cost down
Yes shipping is slow comes by boat to keep costs down.
You guys want everything now. Pay the extra $$ and have it now. but i am happy to stay with CVD to suport a VW business that opened it's doors to bring part pricing down for us enthusiast.
Ash is right when she says that you can't beat ordering direct over the phone, because you do get a more Precise idea of when your product will get to you.

MISS VDUB 路

George is aware of what is being said as I had a heart to heart with him, and honestly let him know what is being said and peoples opinions.

If there are things we need instantly we go to Mick Motors, but most big ticket items George has or will get in stock. People are so quick to criticise. If he were to put on help with the shop, packing, posting and website database updates, guess what? His prices would go up and then there will be a whole new thread of whingers complaining how the prices have gone up and they are all going to buy from the U.S now, blah blah blah. One thing i've learnt, you can't make everyone happy. For George being a one man band with the occasional volunteer help, he's doing a freakin' fine job with making a majority happy.

Sure, we dont get hold of George first go, second go, maybe even third go, but we persist as i know the chances are there is someone like us he is talking to on the phone already, or in his shop, or packing their order. He isnt sitting in a corner like some stores ive been in where the shop assistant couldnt care less that you are even there. He gets around to answering our emails with great prices for us, and we end up talking on the phone which is always lovely with George.

He has a lot of time for us in his busy day when we talk, so we make the time for him.

68AutoBug 路

Yes,
Pricing on websites does help a lot and its why the BIG VW shops in the USA all have them...

but cheap pricing can also mean cheap parts from Brasil - Mexico-Taiwan or China...

If there was a major brand from any of these countries that did make Good Quality parts that do actually fit....
it would make life much much easier...

BUT

I have never seen prices as low before George and CVD came along....

as Ash said... He is Very Busy and still basically a one man Shop
so the prices are still Low...

If you want great service and prompt delivery then there are lots of places you can get it.
Thing is the overheads involved make things more expensive.
Yes it can be frustrating sometimes getting service from George .
BUT lets face it if you own or are restoring an AC VW then being in the NOW generation will always be frustrating.
Perhaps the slow lane isnt so bad? even more suited?
Personally its a journey, my current resto is 3 years young and a while yet to go yet.
If you are restoring then NOW is not really an imperative, plan ahead , order early save money afford more bits order more and all is good.
If you want everything NOW and have no patience go buy a new Toyota or Honda.
If money is no objective buy elsewhere.
Until very recently OS was cost prohibitive. And even now I find George cheaper when shipping is taken into account, Also I can return stuff to him and believe me any resto has incorrect parts ordered or supplied.
For the tight arses amoungst us ( and in the VW community there are many ) we use and love George because he cares is a good bloke and saves us money.
Like our vehicles he is not perfect, he brakes down at times and can be unreliable but thanks god hes there.

Hi Kev
My Son buys the UK VW magazines and I find them VERY EXPENSIVE even if I lived there.. lol
at least parts are cheap in the uSA but air freight is also a killer
it looks like many people don't check out prices when buying overseas.. just buy it..
as interior lamps can be bought very cheaply locally..

Only thing I like is some US companies give You the option of USA Made or South Americian made or OE made or reproductions

I gave up on Classic years ago, after getting supplied wrong part after wrong part, or just getting dicked around. I get my shit from CIP1. Everything they stock is on the website with info regarding the parts on offer as well as honest feedback about the parts ( if its shit they say its shit).

I can order on a thursday or friday morning and have stuff at my door on Monday. Now thats service. And even with shipping they kill local prices. Obviously as stated you plan ahead. If planning an order, make it a good size one, maybe with a couple of friends, and keep the shipping impact to a minimum.

I dont get time during the day to be hanging off the phone discussing shit, so at night I can get online do my reaserch, and order the correct bits. And if I do have to ring them, at least I know someone will answer the phone.

I must say however that Vintage Vee Dub have always given me great service. You pay more than classic at times but you never get let down.

Yeah I ordered a dizzy from vollks on Tuesday last week and got it on the Thursday. Pretty bloody good, I had a look at classic thinking it might be cheaper, but vollks was actually cheaper. Can't really complain. I'll be doing my shopping with them and CIP1

I've bought from them all, and I've only been disappointed with Classic Vee-Dub once. That was not getting emails or phone calls answered - haven't needed to go back to him again.
Mick Motors has always been great, but I'm local so I can just duck in. 馃槈
Vollks has been great too. Prices good, delivery amazing. I did have an email not answered here too. But we made up. 馃槀
Karmen Kampers are also good, though they don't have much that I need. The stuff I have ordered has arrived quickly too.
Haven't bought from Vintage Vee Dub in years, but I seem to remember that they too were pretty awesome.
Bought from CIP1 a couple of times (to take advantage of good aussie dollar), can't complain with them either.
MA Motorworks ditto.
Heritage in the UK, very slow delivery - they use Royal Mail not a courier.
Machine 7 has great gear, though the prices are just average. Delivery is just Ok.
Bus N Bug - Absolutely amazing service, prices and the advice and friendly manner is outstanding.

It is like most things. If you shop around you can get what you are after. The one thing that I do say for CVD is that he stocks some things that after ringing everywhere else they did not.

I am also a Brisbane local so am quite content to go to Micks Motors. Like everything though, they are a small team.

IMHO if you are not happy with the service go elsewhere, no use bagging the guy(s) out.

I got to say I'm very happy with the service i just received from CVD. I ordered a Pertronix ignition kit yesterday afternoon and I had it before lunchtime today. I ordered over the phone and the call was answered straight away.

First time I've used them and won't be the last.

cheers, Scotty

Classic is good if he has the stuff in stock, if not then i can be a big wait for it..... i have just had a terrible experience with him, i have been waiting for parts for 4 months and still did not get them, i sent everything back now so it's all over but i WILL still buy from him, it's probably already been said but the only reason he can supply parts as cheap as he does is due to the way he ships parts into the country, therefore its a long wait for his shipments to come in. If he tells you it will be in next Wednesday, save yourself the frustration and just grab that part from somewhere else as it probably wont be in 馃槀 But if he has it in stock you'll have it within a couple of days. Plus he is such a nice guy, it's really hard to stay mad at him 馃槀

CIP1 are probably faster than George...
but the freight costs are over the moon....

I just rang George twice and he answered both times!!!!

I often buy from george, I also often buy from -

Mick Motors
CIP
CBPerformance
Ebay
Aussieveedubbers forum
Vintage VW sometimes

I am yet to try Volks but I am only hearing good things.

The thing is it is not like Classic is the only place you can get parts from.

I usually try Classic first. If he can't help me or parts are out of stock then I ring around or try USA stores etc. If I can't get through to George before I get through to someone else to order the part then I order from the other guy.

It's not rocket science.

I just ordered a lift kit from him for my baja. Took me a while, sent a few emails he replied to one. managed to get him on the phone. placed the order. Had the kit in about 2 days.

If his phone is always busy with business he can't be dissapointing too many people.

Like someone said above. It is a VOLKSWAGEN not a toyota. relax.

As above ordered twice happy twice, stuff is usually empi or ther and has inherent quality issues but you do get what you pay for. I think George takes a few order each day in the moring and then takes the phone off the hook. Give him a call at start of business or just before and you will probably go ok. His postage is so cheap and parts too. As said though if he doesnt have it dont order it.
Cheers for the help george.

Gave them a go but they don't seem interested , no reply to there "will only reply via email" ,
I was in the area and called in , have a heap of good stuff but the guy at counter didn't seem
interested in selling me anything. Was looking for the rubber grommet that goes through metal floor pan
to seal hose up to air cleaner , "yeah I don't think we got any of them at the moment"
and he went back to viewing his computer. so didn't bother asking about anything else and left.

What I emailed them for I ended up getting from Justkampers.
