Battery Cover

Hi Guys

Did 1973 1300 beetles have a cover over the battery to insulate the terminals from the seat.

The car got knocked back from a roadworthy because of this and I cannot find a cover.

I doubt it. If the right battery is in there then the terminals should be at the high/front of the seat base, a long way from the seat springs, although saying this mine has burn marks under the seat from shorting the terminals out.

Best bet would be to take it to another place to get a pink slip. But a good way of protecting from shorting out is get some skinny timber, the brown stuff on the back of cupboards, and cut it to sit in the base of the seat but then cut it where the battery is so you can open the batteryside without removing the whole piece. Ill get a photo of this as ive done it and the added spound dedaning and its working well.

go to supercheap and buy a plastic battery box, and just use the lid and strap to cover the battery.🙂

My Lbug still had one when i first bought it, although it was sitting upside down on the passenger side floor pan cos it didnt fit the battery
took me a sec to work out what it was at first, none of my others have had one

I normally just use a sheet of rubber or thick cardboard,
non maintaince free batterys still need to breathe

Guys

Your missing the point, i doesnt matter what battery is in in, if the road worthy guys asks for a battery cover then it has to have one. Fitting different batteries etc will not change the roadworthy guys requirement.

I just thought thye may have had one from the factory but I will do as Graig said, use the top of a plastic battery box,

Thanks guys

if you have the CORRECT battery fitted the positive post has a cover on it ,🤪

This would explain why there's a rubber floor floor mat under my back seat :P I never knew why but I always kept it there since buying my notch. Haha.

I would pass a car with the correct battery fitted and held in place by a strap or clamp etc.😊

Ian is right,if the din battery is fitted and secured it has a cover over the positive terminal and cannot short to the seat, this is how they were fitted.I have seen a lot of batteries unmounted with rubber mats or other crap covering them but I will reject these.
It is a waste of time going to another inspection station as the RTA will often inspect these vehicles that didn't return for a 2nd inspection, this will make you a triple loser as you have paid for 2 inspections and then get an audited inspection.

There was no original cover, and if the correct battery is fitted, then there is no reason to have any concern.

It should have been knocked back for unsafe battery instead of no cover. If it has correct battery, then the mechanic is wrong.

When I had my first beetle it still had the original Varta battery from the factory and it did have the flap over the positive terminal. When building my sons baja I went to BCF and bought terminal 'clamps' -not sure the correct term here- for a boat, my reasoning being 'if it works on a boat with all the bashing around it should be fine on a car'. These clamps are quick release and both pos and neg have plastic release mechanisms so no metal is visible. When we took the car to get through Qld Transport I wasn't sure how we'd go with it but took the chance anyway and the examiner said it was a great idea.
