Pedders Shocks

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/84945/pedders-shocks

sander288 ·

Looking into new shocks, didn't want to spend too much, and I found the Pedders Sportz Ryders.

Has anyone got any sought of experience with these shocks? They cost $127 per shock, which I think I can get down a bit,

But yeah does anyone know how Pedders go?

I have had Monroes on the car for a few years now and they are about had it, they were pretty good when new though, but with these ones I shouldn't drive too much on rough roads, beaches, 4wd tracks etc... like I did before (ah P plates....)

(greg/happy daze if you see that Vid do you think it has the LSD?)

Cheers

Shaun

Sides ·

Dunno about Pedders at all really - used to run KYB GR-2's on my BJ IRS, and recently gone to Bilstein's.

(KYB's may be up for sale btw - PM me if you're interested...are you Paddington in Sydney, or Paddington in Brisbane ??? )

HappyDaze ·

Watched the video🙂

Yes, I do think it's a LSD - if it is you're very lucky.🙄

That's salt water that you're playing in! Makes bolts & nuts rust and difficult to undo, doesn't it? 😬

Cheers, Greg

Used pedders once not much success with them r/s after 2 months.and they wernt cheap, they were pretty consistent, all 4 were stuffed cheers you get what you pay for

sander288 ·

sorry greg!!

I knew I should of listened to my dad when he said not to....

cam070 ·

I had a pair of gas sports riders on the back of my first 76 bug. They were fantastic. Car handled like it was on rails. But that was 20 years ago

sander288 ·

hahaha, the thing with my current monroes is, they were fantastic for about 12 months I reckon, and then they weren't so great... or maybe I got used to the, I had GT-gas at the back and normal at the front, I figure with the sportz ryders it should be a bit better, but I don't know how much Koni's or Bilsteins cost yet, so can't compare, I really want to get Bilsteins if they are the right price.

helbus ·

There is no comparison to Koni. Pay for quality European Dutch developed and made product and you will receive the appropriate quality. They are for life. They are adjustable. You can have them rebuilt. Not a throw away item.

matberry ·

Lots of variables, wheels, tyres, driving style and type of roads, std or hipo???

But the short answer, forget the pedders, if a budget set is what your after go with Cofap or Boge for a stock ride, KYB for hot street; if a few more $$ can be spent Konis for adjustability, Bilstein for a more HD style. Boge or KYB should be under $200 a pair, Koni/Billy's for under $400 a pair.

68AutoBug ·

I've got a pair of pedders gas shocks
I only had them on the front for about 30 minutes...

YIKES.... hard as...

I have monroe oil shocks now..
a bit shorter than normal and they are OK..

I don't like gas shocks on the front of a beetle
not enough weight...

but they do keep the front up.. gas pressure..

Yes, I should have said that while I had the Pedders gas sports riders on th rear of my 76, I had Monroe hydraulics on the front. Like Lee said, not my weight on the front, so no need for anything too heavy duty.

This car could leave loads of people behind in the twisty bits, but got smashed on the straights and up hills. But that was a hp issue.

sander288 ·

Cheers for the replies fellas, been a great help, i'm going to go with Koni's eventually it's going to be after valla though

HappyDaze ·

I think you're right, it probably does not.🙅

sander288 ·

dam, you had my hopes up! I thought that I had the only factory fitted LSD from VWoA !!! imagine if they did fit them though... 👍

Looks like i'm going to have to save for the LSD and box rebuild

The pedder family rally cars use Koni shocks - LOL! 😵‍💫

Proven Products used to be Koni dealers. They would re-build them too. I think they are still around.

Hey 57Oval,

Do you know how much it cost to get 4 shocks in from the US with those guys? With the exchange rate it is only $300 AUD for a set of 4!!! 😏 plus shipping i'm not sure but it wouldn't be too much more than $500 AUD for the lot I'd hope

I remember i payed around $450 2 years ago compared to $380 each from the Bilstein dealer in NSW.

I have had a set of them in my 64 notch for over 20 years and they are still good today.

I tried the Pedders shocks when i got my oval back on the road, i paid $150 for them and wasted my money, never again.

Sums it up pretty well I reckon 🙂

Aussie Dubbin ·

So has anyone done anything recently...?
I was starting to think that KONI were the ones now someone i saying bilstien???
How much
Where from
(race and road beetle)

sander288 ·

I know sides has done something recently...

wilderness ·

pedders do have a touring shock option which is comparable to a more standard type shock and they feel really good in the beetles front or rear. they go for $144pr and have an australia wide warranty (parts and labour), not like all the others which are a "back to base" warranty.

The fact that it's 'front or rear' tells you something....the front should have lighter valving than the rear due to the lighter vehicle weight...face it, Pedders sell rebadged/painted cr@p that is not correct for our Volkswagens. Go with shocks that work...Nakata, Cofap, KYB, Boge, Koni and Bilstein.

Newt ·

I thought that there was only a couple of factories in the world that made shockies - and that everyone else just painted over them...

Newt

sander288 ·

Time to seal this thread, ordered 4 new Bilstein shocks from the company eshocks, to get the 4 delivered in 3 days was $323 USD, so about $370 AUD.

Fairly cuffed, and they should be good for wakefield in a few weeks, thanks 57Oval for the referral

Cheers

Shaun 😎

Are you willing to put up part numbers???

Hi All
Great Tread!!
I'm also looking into getting a new set of Shocks and have been recommended Cofaq. I know that they are South American, how do they compare with the Blistein and Koni - is there much of a difference? Cheers.

matberry ·

Yep, HEAPS of difference.

Cofap are a great standard replacement shock, that give reasonable service life, main thing is they will give you the correct valving whereas many replacement shocks actually don't have the 'correct' valving so can give a very harsh ride.

Bilstein on the other hand are arguably the best on the planet, are 3 times the price, are a firmer (note NOT harsh) ride but last nearly for ever if used for the street. Just make sure you get the correct ones for your vehicle and use.

lekker vee ·

Thanks for the Intel
Much apreciated. 😎

Hi
Bilstein and KONI are the Rolls Royces of Shock absorbers...

other shocks are nothing like those...
and nothing is as expensive as those... lol

so, You get what You pay for... with other shocks...

so, does anyone know of a NON - KONI -Bilstein
gas pressurised shock for the front of a ball joint beetle??

LEE

sander288 ·

KYB

matberry ·

Lee, as above, KYB, or Boge oil, but the KYB's will be cheaper and the gas won't be an issue, it's the valving that makes the difference.

westi ·

Hi
Bilstein and KONI are the Rolls Royces of Shock absorbers... are you sure .

were i come from there are some of the medioka brand's.perfect for the car's we love and drive every day.
but please there are many of other brands out there, problem is no one on this forum has heard of them due to the fact that they are worth more per shock than most of our car's.

68AutoBug ·

Hi

Well they may the norm in Europe...

but very expensive down here...

I forgot about Boge shocks too...

also forgot about KYB japanese shocks..

I also understand about the valves...

which allow oil to flow fast or slow...

cheers

LEE

With a fresh 4 inch l/p beam and wheel alignment done, the beetle is very bouncey, fitted koni shocks to rear, and cofaq on the front.car drives nice in the hills, front end has hardly any movement up and down dosent seem like shocks is going to change much.Has any body fixed a simular problem(smooth ride around town)got the konis from car torque for 200

whathaveidone ·

gee!!!! and i thought PEDDERS were good. time for a rethink me thinks❓❓❓

vassy66T1 ·

I have AVO shocks on the 54. No report on them yet, but a lot of the Formula V guys use them, so considering how competitive they are I am hopig they will be a good shock.
You can get them adjustable for damping only or for damping and rebound.
