ArtyP ·

Its taken me a while to get my head around this project but now i am ready to go ,Firstly Graeme I have given you a bum steer I got my numbers back to front KO 370 is the one with the Flared guards KO 401 is my original one .This is the one I brought new it was stored in a mates shed on its side for 20 years with the roof leaking so that is why one side is rusted I was tempted to restore 370 as it has no rust I have only owned it for for 25 years so even though 401 is a lot more work it has great sedimental value to me ,we have been through a lot together (more about that later) I have all the original gear including hood and side curtains seats and the front boot lid, rear lid, inside tray& windscreen are in really good also there is no rust in the floor pan .as you will notice in the photos I have just made a Jig which will make it easy to work on and move around, And CB John is making me a new side no need to hurry John I have plenty to do. And to CB Bill thanks for your patience he has been waiting for about 20 years for me to do something .🙂

11CAB ·

OK, numbers swapped around and new ones uploaded to gallery.
Cheers
Graham

58camper ·

Mate,
It certainly looks like you are ready to power into it. Just remember ,its only money and just think what you will end up with,

Must get up there for a look.
PS- Love the Jig.

Regards,
Bill.

ArtyP ·

Well I have cleaned it up ready for the sand blaster. Glad I have another on to copy off when it comes to putting the wiring back, in all I have is a box full of tangled wires, my problem is the rubber seals that are in the body around the motor area, guess they would be there to keep out the dirt, the front on is in ok condition but the side ones and back one are RS .How hard are they to get out (seems difficult) and is it hard to put new ines in and are they available ? By the way that Jig is invalueable. Art

58camper ·

Art.

Rather yours than the other one that has just come to light.

Those rubber seals slide in like the old sail track.Put some WD40 in and around the seals and then use a flat screwdriver to slide them out. They will be fragile and will probably break a few times but will come out.
The seals can be obtained from a number of places but wait until you have a full list of requirements and buy them together for a better price.

cool....another resto 😵

bevoracing ·

Arty
Don’t worry mate, that’s what we’re all here for, to help you get it done. Don’t panic about the parts, they’re almost all available, even all the rubber bits. They don’t always match the original parts book numbers but with a bit of internet work you can work out what’s what. If you need any help on specific parts just yell out, we’ll give you the tip. I’ve done some of the work (about 170 parts) and I was pleasantly surprised, there’s much more available than I expected, at quite reasonable prices and good quality too. Stick with it.
Cheers
Tony

11CAB ·

Are the tail lights still available anywhere?

CB CRAIG ·

Hi Graham,
Yes you can still buy the rear tail lights but they have chrome trims were the origional ones were black. You can get them from any Hella dealer, they might have to order them in for you.
Cheers Craig.

donn ·

Take care, I have them on the buggy and there are two types, festoon bulb and bayonet, I have the festoon on mine (they were on it when I bought it) and while they haven't given me a problem I am constantly aware that they are second class, also I have been told they are illegal on a car, not sure if that is true.

ArtyP ·

How in the hell do I remove the windscreen washer jets (its a little round bulb in the centre with 2 jets in it )I spent about 2 hours trying to figure it out , and its the last thing I have to dismantle ,would'nt have taken much longer to get an engine out, also does anyone know if the original rubber bellows type pump on the back of the washer knob is still available mine is perished
Cheers Art

OZ Towdster ·

Art,
I don't believe you can by a replacement bellows for the early wiper switches , but i do have 2off of these switches with good bellows

Andrew

58camper ·

Art,
Take advanatge of Andrews's offer for the replacement bellows as you cannot buy them new. I did find a NOS one on Ebay 3 months ago but it was worth the price of a rusty CB.

From what I recall the plastic washer jet just pushed into the rubber hose carrying the water. You can bet your rubber has perished and is stuck to the hose. I dont think there was any clamp. Will have a look at mine tomorrow and let you know if not the case.

Thanks Bill I just sent a PM to him and will ring him in the morning Art

bevoracing ·

I see CIP1 has what they call "VWC-141-955-517-EC - GOOD QUALITY - WIPER/WASHER SWITCH - BEETLE 62-67/GHIA 62-67/TYPE-3 1967"and "VWC-141-955-517-AEC - GOOD QUALITY - WIPER/WASHER SWITCH - BEETLE 68-71/GHIA 68-71/BUS 68-72 / TYPE 3 68-71"
Don't know what the difference is or which one we use. Both have the same picture. They both use a type of pump, but not with the rubber boot thing. Might be worth a look.

ArtyP ·

Thanks for that Tony but I have already ordered one from Andrew the picture of the one in your post is not the same as mine I dont know what what the one Andrew has looks like but heres hoping Art

ArtyP ·

Well here it is back from the blaster I am very happy with the job Tom did ,he is at Heatherbrae near Raymond Terrace I have to replace some damaged panels but its starting to lookgood to me .Art

ztnoo ·

Art,
Looking good! Looks like you have some momentum going now, keep on rollin' along.
👍
So did you go ahead and have it sandblasted or was some other media used?
Any surprises discovered after it got stripped?
Where are you getting the panels you need?
Regards,
Steve

58camper ·

Art,

Not bad for a bloke who only three years or so ago wasnt contemplating a restoration because he thought his son might do it one day.

Being the original owner for so many years and getting your CB to do things that others could only ever dream about must be a cause of immense satisfaction and that is what life is about.

Keep up the great work.

countrybuggybill.

ArtyP ·

In reply to tour questions ztnoo He doesn't use sand but various grains of beads as far as I know ,I will ring him and ask if you want me to,I didn't get any nasty supprises as I had cleaned it up fairly good so I knew what to suspect and CB John is doing the left hand side and inside right hand side panells which needs replacing, he would be one of the best tradesmen I have ever come accross .I am really looking foward to this project now I can see something happening I have given myself 2 years to get the body finished ,and luckily the floor pan and running gear is in good condition and always been maintained properly so it wont be such a big job Regards Art

ztnoo ·

Art,
My best guess is he used glass bead media. Its my understanding it is much easier on the metal under the paint and rust. Basically it just removes the crude of the surface rather than etching into the underlying surface.
CB John is the best! Anyone who can completely rebuild a CB body to original spec is someone whose skill should be applauded and admired. His CB is a work of art, no pun intended. Looks like you have chosen the best guy for your panel repair needs.
What color are you going to paint it when you get around to that stage?
Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Steve

ArtyP ·

Steve
Probably the original colour but I am very tempted to do it in a satin finish, I can hear all the purists groaning already so I will be doing a test bit first to see how it looks . Regards Art

ztnoo ·

Art,
Thanks for your reply.
If you can, check out your stripper's choice of media.
Looks like he did a bang up job for you.
Also......if you don't mind.....I'm sure other mates out there would have interest......could you give us some idea as to the costs involved with what you had done.
Keeping this pieces of history living and running is important. The more info all of us can share and assemble from the experiences of others doing CB restorations, the more it helps everyone....i.e., the more CBs will continue to live........rather than rusting away in sheds.
Regards,
Steve

ArtyP ·

Hi Steve
I called in and saw the Blasting bloke today ,he uses glass beads said they are the best , It cost me $800 remembering that I had cleaned it up fairly good, he didn't have to do one side (the side I am replacing) or the Bonnet, boot lid , windscreen surround & I supplied him with the Jig which made it easier for him .He said it could cost $1000 if anyone wants to know ,I must say I am very happy with his work & service.
Regards Art

ArtyP ·

Well this has taken a bit longer than I expected 🤪 but I am getting there, nearly gave up a few times but had some encouragement from Bill and Lindsay Wilson.

ztnoo ·

Looking good!
👍

ArtyP ·

How good does this feel its now painted. Had a young bloke help me he is a great tradesman (spray painter) and so particular,, I didn't realize how important it was in the preparation, it took a lot longer than I thought , and I was lucky enough to have a bloke across the road with a spray booth which he lent me so we just wheeled it over on the rotisserie straight into the spray booth. I now have it on the mezzanine floor out of harms way while I work on the rest, I just wish Bill was around to see it I recon he would be pleased ,I still have a fair bit to do but most of the running gear should be OK except the brakes it, hasn't been going for about 15 years but it was OK then ,been parked in my shed and I have kept on turning the motor over . I am aiming to drive it to Valla in 2 & half years ( wont get done for this year ) so by then it will be 50 Years old I bought it new on the 10-9-68. By the way I painted it 1968 VW car Savannah Beige its slightly richer colour than the CB colour and we put a coat of clear mat lacquer with a hardener in it, over the top I am very happy with the result maybe the purists won't be.
will be posting photos real soon

Regards Arty

ArtyP ·

I am having a lot of trouble with this NEW Photobucket will keep trying, sorry. 😬

ArtyP ·

Hopefully here it is

Carl and Emily ·

Looks great.
Well done for keeping on it.
Another old vw coming back, awesome.

ztnoo ·

Arty,
Looks super!!! I know its been a "long row to hoe", as we say in The States, but your efforts show.
I bet you are the only first owner that has ever restored a CB he bought new. That is an amazing statistic if true.
You're doing a great job. Looks like you've really got some momentum now. Keep up the good work!
We all love pics.....just like when Bill was still with us, so keep on snapping and posting them.
Kudos, Sir!

Regards,
Steve

p.s. Love your rotisserie fixture!

11CAB ·

C'mon Arty, you still got 5 months to put it together for Valla...... We'll have our Country Buggy there this year

BrisDubba ·

Well done mate - all downhill from here (not just the age thing)

Peter

ztnoo ·

Arty,
Got an update for the audience here?
Steve

ArtyP ·

Now for the floor pan ect, Does anyone know the exact colour grey the floor was painted also somewhere on this forum the bumper bar colour was discussed but mine was a light cream or beige I have still some on the bumper but the local paint shop couldn't get an exact match, and for anyone who is interested I kicked the motor over last week after sitting in the shed for 19 years ,just cleaned the carby and the plugs and it purred like a kitten it has only done about 5000 km since a full recon and my mechanic mate said you wont need to touch it so at the moment I am having the brakes completely redone and getting the floor pan ect sand blasted I am not sure at this stage weather to get the tin ware blasted or get new tin ware ?

ztnoo ·

Arty,
Primo stuff there mate!!!
Nice job.
A long struggle I know, but she's gonna be a beauty!!!
Keep the good work.

Steve

ArtyP ·

Hi Steve This picture was posted a few months ago and wasn't supposed to be posted again I have about 12 new photos to post (Just for you) but I am so pissed off with trying to post photos with photo bucket I spent 2 hours this morning I just gave up.

ztnoo ·

Arty,
Well, I think if you could get the hang of storing pics and posting from Photobucket in a step by step fashion, you'd be OK. Its really not that hard at all. If you could get someone to show you (grandson or anyone who knows what they are doing) in a measured, step by step fashion, writing the steps down if necessary, I think you could get the hang of Photobucket.

The beauty of it is once you get pics posted there, all you have to do is copy and paste the image tag and take it to wherever you are posting, and bingo, it gets posted. I belong to some other forums which won't let you post pics directly to their threads from your own own computer files. Its a bit of a pain to have to do that, but I guess its all about saving bandwidth on the servers for these forums (let the data fill up someone else's server). Some forums have a annual "supporter status" thing for a modest fee which allows a user many more options and more bandwidth to post to thread. Its worth it IMO, to have that freedom.
I think AVD is honestly behind the times a little using this format, but I'm sure it really all boils down to economics.

Try reviewing these Photobucket instructional videos and see if the process becomes any easier or clearer.

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f43/how-place-picture-photobucket-into-forums-28301.html

You can always email me pics stored on your 'puter, if you'd like. But I'm sure all the guys here would like to see them also.....its your call and choice. If we could just get you sorted out on the Photobucket thing.......

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Steve

Looking good Art.
Can't wait to see it running and in the flesh...
Valla hopefully?

ArtyP ·

Here are some Pictues on what I am up to for you to browse on Ztnoo ( Steve)
I built a house once in 12 months but I rekon there is more work in this.
Hope it works THIS time

ztnoo ·

Arty,
First off....thank you for posting the pics. I found them interesting and very detailed. Great stuff involving a wide variety of parts and assemblies on which you have been working. I'm sure everyone here at the forum appreciates seeing them as well.

Second, I have to compliment you on the outstanding quality of your work. One doesn't have to look far to see the love and care that is going into this restoration. Amazing stuff. Your CB will be an eye popping piece of work and art (no pun intended) when you finish. I think we all now realize and understand better what you have done, how long its taken to accomplish, and that you are now well along the path to finishing. Looks to me you have most of the major stuff done. Now the fun is just really beginning. You are really building value back into this very rare vehicle......big time! You are "growing" this asset for you and your family. It will be a very valuable vehicle when you are finished.

Now some observations on your pics. Please understand my intent is not to be critical, but to be helpful and maybe allow you to better understand some problems you may be having with Photobucket:

I note this thread, which you authored, has many interesting pics in it. The first batch of pics on page 1 are small, or what are generally called "thumbnails".
These are shown to be 160 x 120 pixels or a 4 to 3 ratio which is very common for pics, particularly digital camera acquired images. They are generally between 5 KB and 8 KB in size which is very "thrifty" resource wise.
The negative thing about this size is that although they take up minimal bandwidth and resources, their sheer small size makes it very difficult to view all the rich detail which could be displayed in a larger picture format......say 640 x 480 (same size ratio).

Later in the thread on page 2, you posted larger pics, which when I review their size in the page info drop down menu, are revealed to be varied dimensions and sizes, but to the average reader are clearly larger and easier to view more detail than your page 1 thumbnails. A lot of these pics are the 640 x 480 dimensions and are naturally higher in data size (KB).

Then in your last post January 8th, 2017, your pics return to the small thumbnail dimensional size of 160 x 120. They are clearly excellent pics, but because of their tiny size the reader/viewer is somewhat slighted to their full beauty and content.
So it appears to me there could be several possible things going on that result in this picture displaying variation.
1. When you are going to Photobucket to choose pics to post, you are choosing to display pics in the thumbnail size (either by accident or purposely) rather than a larger size option, likely the resolution the pic was taken in originally.
2. You are either accidentally or purposely changing your camera picture resolutions from time to time........so that means one time maybe you take a batch in 160 x 120, and then changing to 640 x 480, 480 x 360 or another size.
3. Photobucket may have placed restrictions on your account because of the total size of your photo library there. Maybe you have exceeded their limit for a free account and thus they are only allowing you to display pics in the smallest resolutions possible to minimize bandwidth and server space and to bring you back within their file size limitations.

In looking at your page info for a photo, when I reviewed this last batch of pics this notice came in the menu, so I suspect you have some file size problems with Photobucket. Not knowing how much of a camera bug you may or may not be, I can only speculate about this. But if you store hundreds and hundreds of pics of large data size there, this could be part of the problem. Here's the message I viewed in a typical photo info drop down menu.
Have you noted this anytime you use Photobucket, or have you received an email notification about exceeding account file size?

It appears that even though your last batch of pics view as thumbnails (160 x 120) in the post, when you click on a individual photo it opens a Photobucket page in which the picture is being displayed larger to the viewer and has dimensions of 480 x 360.

Example of size differentials of the same photo:

160 x 120

480 x 360

Hope all this helps, if even a little.

Steve

That's a shame.

ArtyP ·

Finally finished I now have it on full Rego I really wanted to post a picture but cant seem to do it so I have posted one on VW Country Buggy Australia Face book page, see you at Valla.😉

Arty,
I saw it over at the CB Facebook site.
Looks fabulous!!!
Really great job!

Pop the picture up for us Steve. Don't do the FarceBook.

Please clarify what you are asking me to do.
You know us Yanks don't savvy the English language very well.
😵‍💫

ztnoo ·

I guess this is what you are wanting to see. Is that right Tony???

ArtyP ·

Thanks Steve I really appriciate that I am having too much trouble posting Photos. So thats how it looked in 1968 except that I had pipe removable pipe racks welded on to each side of the bumperbarsand a Bull bar at the front rising above the bonnet line so I could carry my Oxy and Acet bottles on the bonnet without having to tie them on (just had to go carefull not to corner too fast )

ztnoo ·

Arty et al,
Glad to help.
Anytime you are having problems posting pics, you are welcome to email them to me.
I'll save them to file here on my PC, and then use them as an attachment in a thread post.
That's what I did with your pic.
I saved it to file from the FB CB page, and then used it as an attachment in my previous post.
You can use the email system within the forum here, or send them to me to my personal email account directly which is posted below.
sbk@indy.rr.com
Hope this helps!
I think everyone here enjoys seeing pics of each others CBs, especially when restorations are being done.

So, I'd be happy to help facilitate that for any AVD forum member interested in CBs
Photobucket really screwed free online picture hosting when they started charging an annual fee for the privilege of using them last year.
Lots of pics are now missing online, particular on forums, all over the world.

btw, what is a bull bar???

Regards,
Steve

bevoracing ·

Thanks Steve, I think. I still have the same old problem I've always had. For some reason I can't see the pictures in some posts. Everyone else can so nobody believes me. Some have appeared in a year or two. Some are no problem. If I'm not logged in I can see there's a picture there but logged in nothing. Some posts I can't attach a picture no matter what. Others are OK. I've given up pretty much.😆

ztnoo ·

Tony,
The issues you describe having to do with photos may be do to several factors which may be largely out of your control. Depending of the age of the computer you are using, the operating system which is installed, and software glitches which can occur if not updated frequently, could be partial causes to your erratic ability or inability to view and also to upload pics. If you are using a 10, 12, 15 year old computer with an small hard drive and an outdated operating system, it just may not be up to handling the requirements of today's needs online.
For instance, if your computer is still using the Windows XP version which I believe was one of Microsoft's better operating systems, but is no longer supported, its possible its having troubles processing pics, and it may be running excessively slow. Also your hard drive storage and your computer memory may be maxed out or near its limits.

Additionally I learned from Arty about troubles he was having with pictures in the forum. He happened to mention he used a photo storage program called Picasa, which I had never heard of. When I goggled around, this is what I discovered which may be the root cause of his pictures handling problems. I'm unsure of what you are using for a photo storage and editing program, but if you too are using Picasa, this also could be contributing to your problems along with the other things mentioned above. What follows is what I posted in a private email exchange between Arty and me. Knowing some of this, may be beneficial to you as well.

"Picasa was something I had no familiarity with and therefore I Googled the word to learn about it. https://www.google.com/search?q=Picasa&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1

If you are having problem with managing your pictures, its because Picasa has essentially been discontinued. That has been in effect for nearly two years now, so if you've been pulling your hair out trying to figure out what in the hell was going on with all your pics and using them to post into a forum, email, or something else, this likely explains the reason. There probably was a notice sent to you or an announcement made along the way that you might have overlooked or not seen. All these providers of electronic services just can't resist the temptation to "improve" or "update" a program we become familiar with using. It has happened to me, and frankly in American English, it "really burns my ass" to think about it!

"On February 12, 2016, Google announced it was discontinuing support for Picasa Desktop and Web Albums, effective March 15, 2016, and focusing on the cloud-based Google Photos as its successor.
Google stated that the primary reason for retiring Picasa was that it wanted to focus its efforts "entirely on a single photos service" the cross-platform, web-based Google Photos. While support for the desktop version of Picasa is ending, Google has stated that users who have downloaded the software, or who choose to download it prior to the March 15th deadline will still be able to use its functionality, albeit with no support from Google." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picasa

Moving on from Picasa:
Where can I find my photos? If you have photos or videos in a Picasa Web Album, the easiest way to still access, modify and share most of that content is to log in to Google Photos. Your photos and videos will already be there.
https://picasa.google.com/

What's happening to Picasa & Picasa Web Albums?:
https://support.google.com/picasa/answer/6383491?hl=en "

I hope all this makes sense to you and may be of some help to you dealing with pics and tracing down potential problems. The CB Facebook site ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/302252683315626/ ) is a great place for pics of cars and ongoing restorations, but if you aren't a FB user or lover, then that's not an option.
Let us all know if you finally put your finger on your problem(s). Maybe calling in someone else who has a little more "techie" expertise at these sorts of issues might be beneficial as well.

Regards,
Steve (The Yank Across the Big Pond)
