NSW adopts a southerner - My new 10/57

Hey guys,

A few of you will be familiar with this car, i gawked and drooled over it for ages, finally I got it all together and managed to nab her from SA and ship her to NSW.

A bit of a leap of faith buying her, I relied on the good word of AVD members about the car and the owner, and the photos from Splitmeister (Andrew) .. I am happy to say, it was worth it, I went and saw the car today, fired up first time and puuuuuured. Its got even more character in person, I couldn't be happier.

Its out with the guys at RAW in Campbelltown now getting ready for rego, should be cruising the roads of Sydney and the South Coast in a week or so.

These pics show her as is.. I am thinking of loosing the hub caps and dress rims, maybe polishing the drums or painting them silver and putting thin stripe white walls on .. This thing is begging for some choice ratty additions. I dont plan on changing much.

(Excuse the blurred backgrounds.. just a cautionary courtesy to the mechanic... not my workshop to be plastering images up all up over the web.)

Congrats on the new purchase!! Its a beauty!!

I bought my Notch from Andrew (he lives less than 5 minutes from my place). He's a good guy. Glad you are happy with the beetle mate, I wish I had the money, I would have definitely bought it if I did!) 😀.

Hey mate, I'm ready when you are, I actually took Wednesday - Friday off work so I can collect it sort out the rego without having to juggle work. 🙂

Sound system, Haven't decided but it is going to be tricky.. 6 volt and all that. There was a post on Samba about this guy that mods Sony Xplod amps to run on 6volt. Only problem with them was that they probably wont run a normal head unit ... but I would happily just use an iPod touch with a digital jack in the glove box. Thats probably the way I'll go.. Before the sound system I'll accessorize the exterior :P

depending what time you pick it up and what day if its in the afternoon i can give you a listen to rosie lol

nice car, i have driven it a few times when andrew had it down here drives pretty well apart form the accellerator sticking sometimes,bet you cant wait to drive it!.

Saw your beetle today when i dropped Rosie off at Adams. you might see Rosie with her new lowered front before me tomorrow

Aaaah!! Jealous, I was hoping it would be ready today, but they dropped the car off for blueslip this afternoon.. All going to plan I'll be able to drive it home tomorrow some time.

Looking forward to seeing Rosie, She looks great in the photos, but they always look so much better in the flesh. 🙂

ITS ALIIIIIVE!!

Clutch replaced by RAW (Thanks Adam and Mike) In the past couple months, New bumper Brackets, New seatbelts, New Nankangs (145R fronts and 165R rears), New big logo hub cap repros.. New drivers door handle (lockable) ...

Sitting about for another couple of months didn't do it any favors, but Adam and Mike gave her a tune up after the new clutch went in and after a couple of nice 50km + drives she is really warming up to be a nice daily driver.
















P.S. The Cob web is legit.. I had an infestation of red backs in the car... fumigated. .. Only the Web remains.. muahahahaha.

The sticker.. Adam actually asked me if they could put one on after they did some work on my car, I was more than happy for them to slap it on there. Like Paul said , just ask and they will be stoked to give you one I am sure. 🙂

Its been great fun working on it, took a bit of patience getting it on the road, but well worth it. Gets a hell of a lot of attention like you said it would.

Would be great if you can find that stuff, i'm interested to track back through the history of the car, the old rego papers will go a long way to helping.

Hey dude,

Its in at Tires n More Stanmore as we speak, they are looking over the whole brakes rig and seeing what could do with replacing. It was also slouching lower in the front right corner so they are having a look at the shock in there to see if its shot.

Hopefully hear from them today with what they found. Fingers crossed for a cheap fix.

Ah good good. I'm happy it's in the workshop. Fingers crossed it's not too pricey.

I was hoping to paint this weekend. The notch is also in the workshop having a load of repairs done 🙁 We're at $1,100 so far and climbing!

Funny thing about it though, once your in it and driving , you wont even care about the cash. Unless you run out of fuel and dont have money for a refill. 🙂

Haha. Yeah when he called me I had a little heart attack in my office. But then I realised that I haven't spent any money on the engine or anything mechanical. He's doing a big list of work that will make the car drive loads better. Although, this bill will dip into my funds which woulda been going towards an oval 🙁

Still tinkering, added flappers and D plate. Couple of weeks ago had master cylinder replaced and 1 rear cylinder replaced, all rubber breake hoses replaced.




I wanna protect the patina, (Ankor Wax or Clear paint) but the bonnet needs to be attended too first, I think its a replacement cause its still glossy, (rest of the cars paint is oxidized), not the same shade of gray and there is this horrible bright yellow paint under the gray. The paint on the bonnet is also BADLY sunburnt, cracking and flaking off. So i started rubbing it back.

My mate doesn't usually like beetles or the sort. He's a Mitsubishi Evo guy.
However he sent me a photo of this parked at Carriage Works and said, "THIS IS AWESOME! Make yours like this!"

This should make some of you laugh.

Took my bug into the mechanic across the road on Saturday for oil and plugs, go it back , car sounded different, better, lots better, like a VW, and not a sick one, and it has about 40% more power.

Asked the Mechanic what he did to it, he said nothing, just oil and plugs, but #3 spark plug was faulty. hasn't been firing at all, now all 4 plugs are firing.

Best xmas present I could have asked for. 🙂

Thanks Liam for lending a hand this morning, (by hand I mean trailer and green monster truck) Hopefully this will be the last time I have to trailer her away for repairs, dropped out to Adam and Mike at RAW this morning, having a rebuilt 1300 put in.

going for a 12Volt conversion as well I assume? How long will the boys have it for?

Cars going great, few tiny teething murmers, but its all settling down nicely, funny about old cars, as you put more and more new bits in them, the oldest parts really become more obvious, but all in all its holding up quite nicely.

Its very zippy ... we kept the old split case transmission in there, which has the ratios to suit the 1200 engine, but now it has the rebuilt 1300 in it, sometimes I wish I had herad rests ont he seats :P It max's out at about 100-110kph, but getting there is SO much fun, i think it surprises a lot of people when they see a 53yo beetle beat them away from the lights HAH. 🙂

Things to upgrade next will be hallogen bulbs for the headlights , left rear drum has a creak in it.. need to get that looked at, new gear box if this old splity case ever packs it in.. Maybe a switch to 12volt. And run it out to RAW fofr a tune up now its all settled down.

Right, so with all this rain I have been having a bit of a mare trying to commit to a rust prevention / rain repellent / polish.. So i bit the bullet tonight, after a lot of reading about different methods of application , techniques, results and combinations, I ended up going with Ankor Wax, Brushed on, then 10 mins later rubbed even with a soft cloth, then after another 15 mins buffed up to a shine, the I followed that up with a Meguiars wax, let that set on top and polished up ..

I only managed to get half the car done tonight .. Came up pretty sweet so far.
