About another week or so, and it should be ready for some paint - I'm waiting for solar heater to start working again, and the wind to stop.😂
Posting pics is a struggle, and if I manage to find an easy way to do so, I will. Meanwhile I'll stick to the easy stuff - repairing the rusty Beetle shell, and welding in the roll cage etc.
Hoping not to find much mechanical damage, as it looks OK - except for the f....ing broken brake drum.😠 Using GENUINE VW drums now.
Thanks again to those people who have helped out along the way, particularly Steve Muller, his brother Adrian, Rod Penrose, John Fabiszewski, etc.
Cheers, Greg

Good on ya Greg.
Are you building a better mouse trap, or just a safer one?
CT
HappyDaze ·
Same mousetrap - only a fair bit heavier, thanks to the roll-cage. May have to squeeze a bit more out of the engine, but don't want to risk making it unreliable, as it has been running sweetly for over 3 years. Still a bit more in the suspension tuning though, I think.
Cheers, Greg

Saw the pic of it on the trailer in the VW Mag-lucky your pretty short or it could have been real nasty. You should have got a pair of those horn producing rear discs of Gears while you were there.Good luck with the rebuild-Gary
HappyDaze ·
Listen Gary, I'm not putting those new-fangled disc things things on, OK😂 And what's this 'short' bussiness? Oh well, I am now - after the whack on the head. I think that I lost at least 1" - and also I'm not as tall.😂
Kev (camo) will post some pics for this poor old fella, won't you Kev?
Cheers, Greg
nbturbo ·
From what I remember-Ron was telling us you could afford to lose an inch or two from another area.Shame he didn't get a photo for proof. How you coming along with the photo posting training? Gary.
HappyDaze ·
Listen Gary, just behave yourself.😁 and I'm too busy painting No. 8 right now to be mucking about with photos. I managed to fluke one a while back, but I don't know how, so when I get a bit of time, the photo thing will happen - just stop picking on me🥲
How's your car coming along?

Here are most of Greg's photos he sent me, in no particular order. If you have any questions re these, please ask Greg.

No trouble Greg and glad to help. It only took a few minutes to organise, but a day or so to have the time to do it 🤪

I have seen this car in the flesh, gunna be a good car, lots of body work has been done, just goes to show how lucky some of us are to be able to have the good cars.
We also disscussed the disc brake option and greg has some perfectly good reasons not to want to use them.
Cant wait to see it out and about on the track

How did the painting go during the week greg?
Craig Torrens ·
looking good.........so its welded to the pan ?
nbturbo ·
Jeez Greg you have put a lot of effort into the "NEW 8" Good call with the later door locks and strikers. Is that your shed you are working in? Just beautiful.I am still plodding along with mine-2 steps forward, three backwards. There were some serious faults with the Autocraft engine I bought for it,so have stripped it for a full rebuild. Now it's apart,I have decided to turbo it,so can fit a turbo grind cam. Those heads I got from Geers-I have had them rebuilt,so it will breathe well.Sanchez has done well with buying Rods old car-he probably won't need most of the stuff he bought on the trip.Did you ever get all the parts you needed from Chucks' to finish the soft top car you were restoring?Cheers Gary.
HappyDaze ·
Shaun.......Painting (primer) starts today🙂
Craig........Yep.👍
Gary.........Try three steps forward, and NONE backward - it's heaps better.😂

looking good Greg lots of work there that sheet metal will stiffin it right up
I like the later model door locks

modulus ·
Roll angle warning light....sorry, I couldn't resist.
HappyDaze ·
That would work😁 It's ' low oil pressure ', but in that position it would be ON for sure.
What I really would like is a ' Brake drum about to fail ' warning light.
modulus ·
The roll cage looks good - no unecessary bends - should give a really stiff base for suspension tuning; I reckon 'noveight' will be quicker than 'oldeight', despite the weight increase.

I'm assuming you are aiming for Wakefield next year?

Hey Greg i meant to ask whats the 5 or so holes in the roof above the back window ????

It's now BLACK - well sort of. The combination of my lack of painting skills, and a fairly rough body shell, has resulted in something close to the 'old' No. 8. Camo has kindly offered to post some pics - thanks Kev.
I am putting Humpty-Dumpty back together again now - without all the King's horses etc.😂 It's a slow process ( I'm not as quick as I once was ), but I am aiming for the 6th October. That's the next GEAR (Golden Era Auto Racing) day, and it would be a perfect opportunity to 'sort it out'.
Back to work now.

STIDUB ·
👍 jealous that you can get your work done so quickly, it looks like its coming along nicely too 🙂
mactaylor ·
looks great greg, have you got any pics of your front trailing arm brace?
PAZZAN ·
front trailing arm braces are not allowed if running under 3j rules👍
Craig Torrens ·
I dont think this car is intended for 3J though...
Looking good Greg 👍
sander288 ·
Fiberglass guards too, its just a track car for having a bit of fun in, not for a particular class 👍👍
HappyDaze ·
The rules, as per GEAR Club, are fairly easy-going - roughly pre 1961. Later (modern) stuff is frowned upon, such as EFI, etc.
Will be picking up some last-minute bits from Steve Muller this week, including the transmission ( 'fixed' by Adrian ). These two blokes have been so helpful👍Oh yes, and Warb is doing some new ' No. 8 ' stickers for me - thanks mate. Even though I will be off to Morgan Park with my sons, Dave & Tim next week - they're running their Lotuses in the 1 hour race - I should be able to finish No.8 Beetle in time for the GEAR day. It's Wed, 6th October, at Wakefield Park.🤪
Cheers, Greg
FROSTY ·
Good on ya mate !!! Really can't beleive how quick you have got this together. Good luck on the 6th too !!
fish26 ·
Looking good Greg, what are the fins on the drum brakes for, cooling? Also are they interference fit.
HappyDaze ·
The fins help with cooling, but also help to keep the drums 'round'. The drums tend to distort - especially if the wheel bolts are not tightened correctly. Yes, they are 'shrunk' on, with a 0.035" interference.
matberry ·
And I thought they were new tyre technology.....DOH Wrong again🤓
Aussie Dubbin ·
Greg great work, i really love the images cheers, lots of interting little mods, especially around the engine bay...

Nice greg, i'm going to try and come down for the 6th and see you run if all goes well! 👍
dangerous ·
Hi Greg,
can you share some specs and history on your motor.
Judging by the times you ran before the crash, it must have "pick-up".
Is it an engine combination that has evolved from many years, or a recent build?
I am interested to know what carbs(48IDA's?),
and also what oiling system you have used to keep the bearings under control through corners.
Thanks,
Dave.
HappyDaze ·
Hi Dave,
Hope it doesn't sound like I'm being cagey, but sheet metal is my game - engines scare the hell out of me.😵💫
Steve Muller built the engine - I just told him that I wanted, a mild, tourquey motor that would pull from around 3000, and go to 6000rpm. I got exactly what I asked for.👍 Carbs are 48 IDF, oil is Mobil 1 5W50. A deep sump and external cooler seem to work OK.
If you really want to know the tech. ins & outs, Steve would be the bloke to speak to. I'm not one to play the 'secrets game', so whatever he wants to tell you is fine by me.
Cheers, Greg
HappyDaze ·
Just got back from Morgan Park - it was WET!!!!! Son David and Scott Bargwanna had a great win in the Prod. Sports 1 hour race. Other son Tim and Geoff Noble were 3rd, when an electrical fault stopped the car out on the track. Geoff managed to re-start it, and got back to 4th. A great weekend, except for the rain.
Tomorrow I'll be back onto No. 8! Thanks for the nice numbers Warb.👍 You should think of doing that stuff for a living.😉
Cheers, Greg
sander288 ·
Greg are those windows attached to a strap ala porsche racing 356s? I've wanted to do that for ages to mine 👍
HappyDaze ·
That's right, the L/H door window is fixed, but the R/H window is pulled up or down with the strap - a bit of old seat belt webbing. The windows are Lexan.
HappyDaze ·
No.8 is back.👍......drove it about 100 metres - just to make sure gears etc. work OK. All seems fine, and with a few minor bits to finish off, Wakefield Park next Wednesday is a goer!
Cheers, Greg

Nice work on the new roll centre for the swingaxle Greg!
Way better than above the gearbox!
Yeah, that is now a balljoint front end!
Where does that brace from the fork attach at the other end?

OK, the link pins are now rod ends, and the king pins are now 'uprights'.😊
The fork braces bolt to the chassis 'castings' [one each side]. There are 2 vertical braces that are hard to see, bolted to a cross-member above. The whole lot is tied in with the roll cage, making the rear end very rigid.
Sides ·
Very nice Greg... looks to be a lot of hours (years?) thinking gone in to the mix there I reckon !!!
👍👍👍
HappyDaze ·
Not that long, really. I only started to 'muck around' with my VW's suspension in 1960.👍
Re-set rear torsion bars, made a comp. spring, fitted a front anti-roll bar, and gave it some front toe-out. Even made up manifolds, and fitted twin Amal carbs.🙄
sander288 ·
Not much success with the horizontal spring above the box? Too much front wheel lift?

very interesting. But where does that lower arm go connected to the lower control on the front end that run parallel and what does it do?
tayloredvw ·
sorry my england was awful. Where does that lower arm go connected to the lower control arm on the front end and run parallel with the steering arm and what does that do?
cnfabo ·
They stop the lower arm flexing inwards which can also cause the wheel to go into positive camber.
mactaylor ·
Just have to say a HUGE thank you to Greg Mackie for selling me this awesome race car! Took it out for its first outing with me as the pilot, All I can say is it is a well sorted and amazing to drive! Did 3 sessions in it, made massive gains each time. Rear tyres are now stuffed! Drum Brakes for the win! 13th outright! against big HP cars, Pretty bloody STOKED! Thanks again GREG!

OK Greg,I have studied the pics of "the suspension" - you are difinately a "Genious" .You tried to explain it to me once, and it was difficult to visualise without being there.Do I see 2 wheel cylinders on the front brakes? The front stub axles are definitely something else.Awesome!!!

Oh shit, panic stations!!!!put some pics up...what are those two peice wheels it's running, they look really good
HappyDaze ·
Crikey, Mac...what caused the "minor brake problem" ? Can't imagine how that would feel. 🙅
You say no damage...how about the Reg Grundys ?
Fabo, they're actually 3 piece wheels.
mactaylor ·
Dont know what caused it yet! Was a bit of a pucker moment thou! Will put it on the hoist in a couple of days! Felt a bit like the master cylinder died! no leaks but! A bit odd! Any ideas greg? Was doing 1.44s until that point! cant master the sweeper yet! It is a bitch!
HappyDaze ·
Never had any sign of that brake problem, Mac. Maybe the M/C has failed, as you suspect. Is there brake fluid leaking anywhere ?
1-44 is pretty quick at Winton. 👍

Will find out soon about the MC! Greg can i ask what times you were doing at winton?
HappyDaze ·
Only driven on the 'long' circuit [2008]...1-51s.
OZ Towdster ·
Mac check how your handbrake ( if fitted ) is adjusted as if the handbrake leavers are adjusted on too hard it'll leave your rear drum slaves too far to travel and give you a vauge pedal at unpredictable times

Fabo, The wheels are a 3 piece design by greg and his sons, centres were water jet cut alloy with white horse industries hoops. Nice and light! Towd, I tried the hand brake trick, It did not help. Its an odd one! Greg I was on the long circuit! It goes nice!

Funny ol bugger you are:lol
Is the car still running your fandingo suspension greg
mactaylor ·
Hi Fabo the car is basically the same as greg had it, all i have done is a new seat and steering wheel that fits me! and i moved the battery and extinguisher inside and replaced the fuel tank with a fuel cell to move a bit more weight onto the passenger side front wheel, I did the corner weights and it was pretty light on the passenger side front.
HappyDaze ·
You mean HEAVY on the DRIVER's side ? 👍😂
mactaylor ·
HappyDaze wrote:You mean HEAVY on the DRIVER's side ? 👍😂
Yes you are right! I could shave a few kilos off the drivers side but that means no more rib eyes! That aint going to happen! By relocating the battery and fuel tank we shifted 30kgs to the passenger side, got a few more little tweaks to do! Then some full slicks are in its future! Was thinking of putting the oil filter up front too, What do you reckon Greg?
HappyDaze ·
You've got the ball now, Mac...nun with it !
I like your "little tweaks" approach. 👍 Moving the filter up front was on my list. That's where I had it in 1963, on the 'old' No.8. [behind the cooler].
cnfabo ·
Glad your having a blast Mac,shame u weren't at valla, would of loved to say bday..
I did same as what your doing with my old red 64,try and shift weight to the left to compensate for us fatties...it's probably impossible to get a beam front end balanced right.....what was the weight of the car??
I weighed my blue one I built minus gearbox and engine and came in at I think 490kg.its single skin etc....so with my bike engine transplant I hope it will be around 650kg...or less, hoping!
Whats the engine specs?
Lsd?
Sump?

The Murray is still in flood but around Wilby should not be too bad. North of here is copping it now! It has been a damp winter! Supposed to get a bit of rain tonight but not much hopefully!

Hello number 8.Can any one tell me where the shifter knob comes from, and or have you a spare one i can buy, please
HappyDaze ·
Which one ?
mactaylor ·
Which nob?
mactaylor ·
Righto! Had 4 sessions at Wilby on Sunday. Not as many cars out there this time around, Rained early morning but cleared up just in time. First session was all good trying to get some heat into the tyres, checked the tyre pressure and bumped them up a bit for the next blat! Prob should have left them there as when i came in next they were at 35psi. Dropped them back down. Next session was great, getting out there behind a mate in a Silvia with an LS, big brakes and huge semi slicks, we were pretty much on par. I just pipped him! Tyres were on song by now, everything was feeling great, the silvia was doing a bit of show pony stuff coming onto the straight, so I thought I would give it a bit too! I can tell you No8 is not a great drift car but it was fun to be side by side giving it heaps! A long lunch let everything cool down and I think it was a bit too cool as the 4th session I was not able to better my times. Came 4th outright. Pretty chuffed!

You are correct, the gear lever [a shifter is an adjustable spanner 👍] was bent to make it easier to reach while driving with a harness on.

Took No8 out for the last event for the year at logic at Barnawartha. Was pretty warm so I was a little fixated on the gauges keeping an eye on things! First session i scrubbed in the new rears all was going good with a time close to my PB for the track, did about 6 laps and the oil temps were getting a bit high so wheeled her in. Checked the tyres and all was good! Second session decided to get into it straight away and just wring its neck until the temp beat me. Had a blast keeping up with a well set up Evo2, He could just get away down the straights but under brakes and corner speed No8 had him covered. I thought it felt real good and was confident that I would have beat my PB but the transponder was not working!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ah well! Temps were pretty high now and thoughts of packing it in and heading to the pub was looking like an option. However I decided to give her one more run. The track was very warm and i could not better my PB, did improve but not by much. Now it was just plain HOT! Packed her up and went to the pub for some heavy drinking! Have a great photo that my sister in law took with both inside wheels off the track, Did not hit any thing to get her up there just pure grip! https://www.facebook.com/mac.taylor.1238/posts/1276018185790757?notif_t=like¬if_id=1479551498630445

Took No8 out for the first event of the new year, was great too be back in the seat. Bit of a missfire up in the revs must fix that for the next round! first session took it easy just making sure all was well, other than the missfire all felt good! Checked the tyres needed a few # more. Back out and into it! On turn four got a little loose and could not wind in enough oppy! spun on a top! All was well did not hit anythingl! Few more laps then back into the pits. PB!!!!!! Only by a tenth but happy with that. Next session the temperature was getting pretty high so did not improve any! Had a blast! Some of the boys in the club have spent up big during summer and have really raised the bar! Looks like full slicks and a few more herbs are just around the corner!

Now you've found the limit, you know where it is...so keep just a whisker under it - it's that easy. 👍

Yeah been trying pretty hard! Gotta change a few suspension settings to counter my fat arse! Needs a bit more camber drivers front! Maybe a degree, and then maybe a bit more spring in the rear! I did find some footage of you at SMSP in front of a Escort? You seem too have the same weird slip and grab mid corner problem I have encountered! Ill try and find it again!
