G'day. I need to vent. I've had it with Type 4 motors, so I figure I'd make a place to blow off some steam, share the pain and let others do likewise about problems they are having with their VW (or whatever. I'm not picky).

Weird head with two loose seats.

Another loose seat.

Guess what this one is.

Not a failure, but very, very worn seats. the guides are just as bad.

That's me done for now.
It's your turn!

In defence of that poor bloody old VW engine, I have to ask did you have the valve seats cut by some "expert" or did you do them yourself! They look rather wide which can cause all sorts of problems.

Nothing has changed much in 40 odd years and they need quite a bit of upkeep compared to modern engines. During the 60s, you were lucky with a Type 3 engine if you got much more than 30,000 miles without having an exhaust valve fail or the original rocker studs falling out. Clutch forks had the legs snap off until a mod came out with a spot of weld on the tension side to reinforce the butt weld.

With the quality of valves now and proper maintenance on the valve train that problem should be in the past.

Clutch cables.... another problem in Type 1, 2 and 3, especially if we go stupid and put strong clutch pressure plates in. Memories of 9 inners as well in a Type 3 clutch and then complaining of breaking the welds on the clutch tube through the tunnel. Clutch was nice and strong though.

Aren't they fun to drive if:

You generally don't over stress the design
You maintain them at regular intervals yourself
Most of all, do most of the work yourself and then there's only one person to blame as well as being much cheaper and more rewarding.

Hi

nothing wrong with type 1 engines... lol

even though I had My engine out about 8+ times before it was on the road and probably 4-5 times after it was on the road..

most of My problems were semi auto problems...
torque converter etc...
sometimes the engine was in & out many times in a day...
undoing all the ATF hoses and pipes..
collecting the ATF every time... to reuse it..

along with ATF pouring out the Torque converter onto the ground and then a dish... to be thrown out...

I had the narrow fan on My alternator with doghouse shroud for about a year... lol
all the paint peeled off number 3 & 4 cylinders... lol

all the tinware has been off a few times and repainted about 4+ times ..

all of My problems were really caused by Me...
as I'm no mechanic...
only MY beetle Mechanic.. lol
[I'm also a fiddler] lol馃槀馃槝

Not vee dub related but u didn't mind :P hows this for a stock motor failing? piston not just cracked but broken in two. No wonder it was gutless after the noise got phsyko, it was blowing straight into the bottom end.

From the post mortum a mate and I conducted on a 1987 jdm celica 3sge engine, we noticed at cylinder number three, there was no main bearing left at all. The top of the piston seemed too clean compared to the others (look at the top and bottom of the face), and this differed from the rest. We assumed that because of the cleanliness, there must have been injector failure running the cylinder lean, detonating due to the lean mixture regardless of the ignition timing (which explains the rattle it had low in the cylinder head, but was an unsual case.)

Regardless of how retarded i changed the timing it didn't stop, and the noise wasn't coming from lower enough in the block to suggest it was a bearing all along. it was very unusual from a toyota perpective.

Here is the engine prior to explosion:

I bought the car like this with the rattle. The engine lasted a week 馃槀 It pulled some beautiful skids and had heaps of power up to the 7 grand red line 馃 She had a few km's on it. It is now fitted with a 93' jdm celica 3sge (phase 2) with only 65,000k's on the clock.. should last a little longer and go a bit stronger haha i hope!

Following the lean mix causing detonation, this would have put the stress on the main bearing hence the wear and last the piston carked it probably from either heat stress and the impact of the conrod just loosely throwing around the crank.

The oil pump was stiff, clogged with bearing shavings, along with sump, resulting in premature wear in all other bearing surfaces.

COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE!
My mate i was pulling apart with was in hysterics over it. what an achievement!

I didn't do this but it was like this when I bought it. Surprisingly it still ran 馃槀

Lucky I bought it only for the BW T5 trans in it. 馃榿

All of them except for the mashed one were my attempts to get a serviceable head while living in a location where nothing is available locally. I failed hard 馃檨
