1956 typeIV build

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/85675/1956-typeiv-build

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hey guys, after the long wait due to complications we finally brought my 56 home today. here is a progress video:

ok so heres the story, It starts when my dad was a lad... he met the local vw mechanic, kevin. anyway after years of owning volkswagens and driving them my dad formed a good relationship with kevin, when the shop was still open (it shut down about 3 years ago) me and my dad went in one time, i remember that i wasnt really allowed to come into the work space but this time i got a peek in there. There sat in the corner of kevins workshop was a gutted looking vw beetle, my dad told me it was special but how would i know!. Fast forward a couple of years and ive caught the bug! so i thought if im going to do it for the first time lets do it with style!

After searching the web and looking through the classifieds with no luck i thought i would quiz dad about that "special vw" and as it turned out this special beetle was an oval, which my dad had tried to buy apparently. so i thought there was nothing to lose and rang kevin, it turned out he was thinking of selling it.. What timimng!.

we went to have a look at it and the offer was to good to refuse, the deal was done and $2000 was withdrawn from from my bank and proudly put in kevins hands.

the body and most panels had been hand sanded down ready for priming but never was primed. so crap loads of rust built up. it came mostly complete but not assembled. First im going to get it licenced and drive it around, then save up and do the full paint job and restoration.

Wish me luck!

Look's to be a good solid car , well done , hope you have all the guards etc as oval parts are getting hard to come by !!!!

hey guys, thanks for the replies i have all the fenders and pretty much all the parts but not one of them havent been tweeked with...

Yeah we got a bargin with our red oval, I think it was about $8000 already to go, new motor etc.😊😊

DieSchnelleKafer ·

did some work on it today, cleaned the left heater channel and left floor pan ready for por 15. going to order some parts from wolfsburgwest, door mechanism left and right and striker plates to get the doors closing going to also make a start on the right heater channel and floor pan. also on the weekend going to prep the body for a coat of primer to seal it off

jamiec ·

Wish i could have payed a lot less for mine to😁 r well saves me having to do all that hard work😉
Good to see your getting stuck into it do you have a time frame to get it finnished?

bugzla ·

there is a bloke up here with a 56 oval that wants way to much for it fronts been damaged rust in doors (top and bottom ) pillars front guard is bogged to the front appron floors rusty and he wants 6 k for it what a dreamer just a early shell is difficult up here most of the cars were used in land fill by those so called car lovers in the ford and holden clubs some times it makes u cry 🥲

Scarab ·

looks pretty tidy mate, good score!

keep posting those progress pics!!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

DieSchnelleKafer ·

all por 15-d

Barnabie ·

Nice job so far!

I know what you mean about parts being molested. I'm rebuilding (insert: "at a snail's pace") a 57 Oval too. Sourcing replacements can sometimes be either tricky or costly (or both) but hey, at the end of the day its another oval back on the road which must be a good thing 👍

Can't wait to watch your progress 😁

DieSchnelleKafer ·

this is an awsome way to dry a heater channel out when in the middle of por 15 process. update this channel has now been painted... i know that this may look like a botch job but for now i just want to seal the metal up and get it passed over the pits

DieSchnelleKafer ·

well not much progress so far, being 14 has its bad points im not getting enough money! and if i work more then i will have not much of a life. so the cheapest way i can get a restored car is to just save up and get it painted and do a body off resto all at once.. it will take me a while to save up but are collection of vw's lacks a restored one.

there is a pic showing were some guys have drilled some holes to mount a sun visor 🙁

DieSchnelleKafer ·

oh if you ask i painted the roof with the por15 process.. i swear by that stuff

retroresto ·

Good to see another 56 making its way back onto the street, keep up the good work.
Mine started off the same colour (summer blue) and condition, a bit of elbow grease and it will be a great car again, see my thread.

Cheers
Paul

t_tuffnut ·

I wish that I had gotten a start on my bug at 14! I don't think my parents would have allowed it.

vassy66T1 ·

Good work Blair ... keep it up. Most youth are too busy playing Xbox (including mine) to get stuck into something like this. Full credit to you. 👍👍

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hey guys thanks for the nice comments.. yes i can see why people usualy start this sort of resto when there a bit older, its hard work! and as far as work goes, i went on a holiday and had to cancel a few shifts so when i came back they only gave me 3 hours a week! my bullshit siren is screaming. so because of the lack of money the progress aint going to fast

SO onto the fun part, pictures will tell all

DieSchnelleKafer ·

pulley and altenator stand.. orgasmic

Mike ·

Awesome shiny bits bet they would be a good inspiration.

johny rotten ·

can i ask why u decided to use Jake rabys

DieSchnelleKafer ·

we used jake rabys kit because it provides even cooling to all 4 cylinders, another personal reason is that theres not many around australia, and everyone uses the porsche stile which is now sortoff getting boring. oh also compared to most of the porsche stile kits this is pretty cheap

wilderness ·

lookin' good!!!!!!!

vassy66T1 ·

Keep it up Blair. I like what you are doing.

66deluxe ·

Nice one mate, good to see you going type 4 and the DTM's rock, i'm up to my third one now. What size engine you building?

DieSchnelleKafer ·

66deluxe wrote:Nice one mate, good to see you going type 4 and the DTM's rock, i'm up to my third one now. What size engine you building?
have a 1800 motor that i got from the same guy who sold me the car, i want to bump it up to 2000cc put a webcam mild grind cam in it. efi and a CSP python exhaust system aahhh dream on

all comes down to how much i earn haha

66deluxe ·

Nice go for 1911cc if you can use the 66 stroke crank from the 1800 and use kb 96mm pistons run a web cam 494 grind and for heads go for 42 x 36 mm valves and seats with single heavy duty springs and cromoloy retainers, set compression at 8.5-9.0:1 and your off to a great start. I got a 2056 to build and my 2270 to build also all parts from my mate Jake Raby, been to his shop twice now and worked there both times. any questions just ask me, be glad to help.

jjwebb123 ·

sweet man, look forward to the updates.👍

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hye guys after a long wait my dad has finally gotten his python exhaust system from csp! here is a video:

DieSchnelleKafer ·

g

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hey guys, 66deluxe in particular.. i had a talk to kevin today and he has a type 4 2.4 litre with a mild cam, 103mm bores, the largest valves possible (thats what he told me) and its balanced.. it also has a high compression ratio that is the largest you could go without being unreliable, anyway him and his son built it about 10 years ago but his son lost interest in the vw seen for the muscle, now its not assembled but its all there how much do you think this is all worth, they said they spent 6 grand on it back then but they tried to sell it a year ago for 4grand but had no bites, if i put an offer for 3000 maybe? well i would have to save it all up

66deluxe ·

The 2.4 would have cost 6K 10 years ago, paying 4k for it a year ago for all the parts is still a bargain, you could offer 3 if youlike. Ask him what exact heads they are and what cam it is.

DieSchnelleKafer ·

66deluxe wrote:The 2.4 would have cost 6K 10 years ago, paying 4k for it a year ago for all the parts is still a bargain, you could offer 3 if youlike. Ask him what exact heads they are and what cam it is.
i just went over there to talk about the 2.4 and some other stuff and it has MASSIVE stainless steel valves on it, im not sure of the size but i will verify the size once i verify that i am actually buying it, found out some other stuff aswell. it has racing forged pistons aswell! talk about a opportunity, he says his son will probablyy want something close to 4 thousand but i ges we could nudge that down a little, all i can say is that all the work has been done and it was done by a trained mechanic and machine shop person

i have just arranged to buy 2 fiberglass front fenders from Barry Lord.. they look sweet and will save me heaps of time on body work. also later in the project i will buy a back set so that if i have a prang its not with original steel

DieSchnelleKafer ·

ok so here goes.. last few months have been slow, i have saved to buy some more parts. bought some front fiberglass fenders from barry lord (perfect 56 moulds) and im soon going to be buying the rear ones.

many other small parts aswell. here is what i have done:

Cut the old H apron out because it was stuffed.

Cut alot of rust out near the rear right bumper bracket.

paint type 4 valve covers with VHT WRINKLE PAINT.. waiting for results in the morn

overhauled the pedal cluster

overhauled the wiper motor assembly with near armatures, and blades

removed bolts from body in prep for body off pan restoration,

gathered many parts for my 36hp build

DieSchnelleKafer ·

pedal cluster and valve covers cleaned

DieSchnelleKafer ·

painted

MAT792 ·

looks great mate! i just picked myself up a 65 and plan to restore her too!
their seems to be lots of young people like us (im 18) doing up bugs now!
look forward to seeing more progress

AJPerkins ·

Mate you are doing a seriously awesome job! I can't wait to see how your build comes along.

AzzA_teu ·

Terrific work mate.
I'm jealous. Wish I had that much room to work on cars, and wish I had a nice starting point like you do with the oval.
Keep up the good work!

DieSchnelleKafer ·

here is that wrinkle paint after drying

DieSchnelleKafer ·

here is that wrinkle paint after 3 days of drying

DieSchnelleKafer ·

ok so here goes, fuel tank etch primered, filler primer then top black coat!.. access holes paint same method, hand brake, steering wheel tube, indicator stalk.. etch primered..

$87.00 later i finally tracked down a RHD rear veiw mirror for my oval.. it is in pretty good shape... some of the chrome is flaking but i cant really do anything about it 😢

i had a WW sun visor in my parts stash whcih i can use 😎

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hey guys, i have been indulging in restoring the easy stuff..

going to be welding the NEW (klokerholm one was incorrect) heater channel in in about 3 weeks time aswell as the right side rear qaurter panel.. and a few spot holes that need welding up.

Camo ·

I like what I see in this last photo at about the 4pm position - A timing wheel mmmmm.

Keep up the good work, Kev.

thanks, yeah me and dad are trying to pioneer the upright type 4 fuel injected engines around our region haha yeah, glad to have you here man, your 61 looks the goods, love the colour 👍

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hey guys! me and my dad bought this cigweld transmig 175i

buy once cry once.
the idea is to for me to become a metal work guru and eventually fix both cars, this 56 and our 1967 karmann ghia 🤓

awesome, i have wanted to buy a welder for a long time and we have plenty of uses for it, Thanks dad!

vassy66T1 ·

Very good.
The wrinkle paint is a cracker!! Nice job on the fuel tank also.
Keep it going

nbturbo ·

Good work there Blair.Wish I had started something like you are doing at your age-guess when I was your age, there wasn't a lot of stuff around.I have a 2.7 fuel injected Type 4 in an Oval and it's awesome to drive. That motor you are looking at is a bargain.I have put all the good stuff into my engine-C/W forged crank, good heads with big valves, forged pistons etc,so I have a bit of an idea of what it would cost for all the bits your friend has bought.Don't hesitate, grab it.You were very lucky finding an Oval in such good condition. If you have any questions about squeezing a Type 4 into an Oval, always happy to help. You will need to modify your fuel tank if you are going with fuel injection.

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hey, thanks for the comment..

yeah my dad has told me i should focus a bit more on the body work (hence the welder) so i am aiming to get it paint some time soon, so i wont have the money to save for that type 4.. on another note, when you say modify the fuel tank you mean making a swirl box? correct?, well i know someone has asked this somewhere but couldnt you just make like a large diameter flat cylinder, with a fuel inlet (from the tank) a line going to the efi inlet and a line coming from the efi outlet?

nbturbo ·

No I haven't bothered with that stuff-just thread the original centre fitting 1/4 BSP for a 10mm barbed fitting and you will need a return line back into the tank somewhere from your fuel pressure regulator. For this I made a fitting with a 1/4 bsp female thread-and silver soldered it to the bottom of the tank-about 150mm away from the centre fitting, and to the passenger side.I silver soldered a 10mm diameter piece of pipe into a barbed fitting(threaded end) for the centre suction fitting that protrudes into the tank about 40mm,just so you don't suck any shit off the bottom.EFI is a big ,expensive step, but very user friendly. My car doesn't get started sometimes for a couple of months, but it fires instantly and idles smooth straight away and can be driven cold with out any backfiring or spluttering.

Turbo54 ·

I have also done a EFI setup that is very easy.
Similar to NB, 10mm out of tank gravity feeding through a strainer (not filter) into a small catch tank mounted on outside of front passenger firewall. From there it goes into a bosch 930 fuel pump, through a filter and into the engine. From the engine the fuel is then plumbed back into the fuel tank. I have also vented the catch can into the fuel tank incase of any airlocks. A good thing to note is that you should make your tank breath a little better than the factory screw on lid. You can look at my old build thread to see how I did this.
Good Luck,
T54

lou0060 ·

good to see you went for the CIG mig, good unit for what you are planning. Not sure how much experience you or your dad have with welding but just in case better to have it said than not, I would not mig the fuel tank or even braze it without a very thorough wash out with soapy water. In fact I know guys who won't weld fuel tanks unless they are full of soapy water. petrol fumes can cause huge explosions so beware....

if you google mig welding there are some great youtube vids on the how to and little tricks, but as most things practice makes perfect.... good luck and keep up the good work......

DieSchnelleKafer ·

WELLL

i forked out the money to get a new rear qaurter panel and H apron.. DONT ASK ME HOW MUcH THESE BAUTIES COST!

note: i got the H apron without the exhhaust cutouts, (pre 55) because i thought it would be different and i dont need them anyway

Dasdubber ·

Looks great mate, is the rear apron from Autocraft?
Cheers
Al

hi alan, they are from Tomasz at "kdf services"

there are three options either autokrft (sloppy mouldings but cheap)

Kdf services (good/very good moulding and average price)

wolf parts (very very expensive and from what i have seen about as good as wat i bought)

Thanks!
Blair

Dasdubber ·

Thanks for the details mate, I have to do an apron on my 54 and haven't been overly excited about what panels have been available to date. Good to hear you were happy.
Cheers

vassy66T1 ·

Very nice. How do you find kdf services?

DieSchnelleKafer ·

he was really responsive. it took him a while to make the parts though, he actually posted the items before the paypal money had reached his bank account!

Blair

vassy66T1 ·

And where are they? e.g. Web address, phone number, street address ? Cheers 😘

DieSchnelleKafer ·

vassy66T1 wrote:And where are they? e.g. Web address, phone number, street address ? Cheers 😘
hes in poland haha, "kdf services" here is his site: http://www.kdf.cp6.win.pl/

and this is his email address: kdf-166@wp.pl

he makes lots of stuff, H aprons, Rear quarters, etc and they are all nice qaulity

DieSchnelleKafer ·

ok so steady progress, i have been working on the heater channel.. so i started up front near the A pillar to patch a hole (my first intentions were to patch the heater channel) so i got that done, but then i opened up the rear right quarter panel to replace it(near the drivers door) and found a sorry sight, even if i patched it it would be structualy unsound. SO i grabbed a heater channel that we had laying around hehe and started grafting in the heater outlets so they are in the right place

putting the new heater channel in next weekend! so exitement

DieSchnelleKafer ·

me being silly, and a heater channel

vassy66T1 ·

Cool.... keep it going

Flintstones ·

Great work!! Keep it up. 👍👍
Cheers
D

Camo ·

I think it is fantastic that you are taking on all of this at a young age 👍

What you will learn will be very helpful through life and I wish I had of learnt body work, rust repairs when I was young.

But I bet my wife is glad I didn't, as I would want many more cars that I have to say 'no' to as they need work that I cant do.

Well done young fella and keep it up 😉

Kev

HappyDaze ·

This country could do with more young fellas like this one.👍👍👍

Cheers, Greg

DieSchnelleKafer ·

thanks guys i really appreciatte the help, when i first got the oval i had a totally different outlook to rust but now i have a welder its like im not scared to spend hours fitting a piece and just getting er done!!

oh i also learnt tht restoring a car is expensive.. very expensive haha

cheers,
blair

DieSchnelleKafer ·

another days work, i have to graft those vents in so i started by cutting out the wrong vent (in the new heater channel) and openeing up the air passage whithin so that it flows on to the new vent.. tricky business

DieSchnelleKafer ·

ok so the last two days i have done this, alot of people can read through build threads and not actually know how much effort this body work takes, WOW~!

its all very rewarding though!

DieSchnelleKafer ·

haha this is a good pic❗

Flintstones ·

looks great
you planning on building a few motors are you?😀
cheers

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hell yeah i really want to rebuild a 1800 type 4 for this beauty, and those other engines are from old cars we have cut up, or bought new engines. and if you look close you can see some gas burners.. they are my dads for now but i reckon when the time comes to reassemble after some strato silver has been layed down.. dad might find they will be rollling with me haha nar i think i will get myself a set!

DieSchnelleKafer ·

more patching, at the start of doing this small repair i started with a patch about the size of a ciggy lighhter, in the end i had to replace all that you can see here because the metal was to thin to weld from rust!

ahhhhhhhh

matberry ·

Ahh the joy's of rust repair....your doing a very pro job, well done. As you've mentioned it takes about ten times the time you expect and your finished metal work looks great. 👍

DieSchnelleKafer ·

wow thanks! i am trying to keep the warpage sown i guess, my goal would be to get this featured! thats why im taking the time 🙂

thanks man i really appreciatte people commenting!

matberry ·

All good mate, I know how it is, but you seem to have a good garage and other family volksie dudes to help. I started my adiction very early too. Had my first engine torn down and repaired when I was 12. Beach buggies in the bush or on properties was the go back then. Your bug is going to be a ripper, keep up the good work, it's a long road to enjoy 🙂

DieSchnelleKafer ·

WOOOOTTTT

NEW AMC HEADS!

Turbo54 ·

stratos silver - nice colour choice. Was the colour my 54 was going to be before I changed direction. USA only 1954 colour if I remember. Has a nice flip from dark blue to silver in the light.
Turbo54

DieSchnelleKafer ·

yeah, what supplier where you going to get it from? can you provide all the info you know? haha i have found a glasurit dealer and they mixed up a sample for me to test to see if its the right colour butt if its not i would like to make sure thats not my only option

cheers,
Blair

DieSchnelleKafer ·

ok so i went and got a sample of l227 strato silver paint from a glasurit dealer. if you are trying to track this paint down its as simple as asking for "l227" from glasurit!

check out the DODGY ASS repair done on the decklid mount, also check the repair i made. took me 4 hours total!

DieSchnelleKafer ·

Well I'm at the toodyay bugin and so far I have discovered that swap meets are a good way of meeting fellow veedubbers! I met kombijon and 66brm so far, both of them supprised me when they came up to me and knew all about me haha

Edison ·

Hi mate. Keep up the good work. I'm from Bunbury and remember that beetle from Kevin's workshop. I often wonder where it ended up and glad it stayed local. There was also a split icecream truck there but that's another daydream.

Anyhow, i'm returning to the South West soon with my Splitty (under resto) and hope to catch you cruising the mean bunno streets.

DieSchnelleKafer ·

Dude! Good to meet you man, I can promise this oval is going to get the treatment he deserves, I guess it must be an amazing feeling to stumble upon a build thread of a car you have wondered about, I still have a close connection with kev, I'm buying parts from America for him for his splitty restoring , once we have both finished our projects we should deff go for a cruise around bunno!

Edison ·

For sure. I'll watch this space. I remember Kevins bus also, two tone i think. Haven't spoken to him in a few years.....ask him about the icecream bus that he had for me, maybe its still around 🙂 Here is mine http://www.noh2o.org/viewtopic.php?t=1394

DieSchnelleKafer ·

yeah, hes restoring it, hes got it in paint, same colours, its just waiting to be put back together

DieSchnelleKafer ·

had another crack at rippin this heater channel out:

the new one test fitted and the end of the woring day:

DieSchnelleKafer ·

who wants to buy a 1959 vw beetle?

vassy66T1 ·

Haven't looked for a while. You are making a really good job of the body.

I wish I had your skills 👍

Good luck with finding some early guards. I have 2 sets and they are all rubbish. The amount of panel beating and repair required is no joy at all.

Turbo54 ·

Give me a call, I can get you onto a set of 54 guards in glass. The glass ones are moulded from my 54 steel mint originals. i might be persuaded to sell the steel ones.
Interestingly I sampled Stratos silver for my beetle also. It is a lovely colour, very dark in the shadows but can sparkle to a light purple silver in the sun. Have you tested it on a guard yet?
Do it before you paint. You'll be suprised.

Looking great mate, good work on the rust repairs. Love the Vintage Speed exhaust, good choice.

stagvee40 ·

Looking fantastic, good work, im 14 to and just finished restoring a Historic Formula vee for Historic racing. I know the feeling of not having the money and not being able to earn much🥲 but it'll get there. POR 15 is great stuff, i coated my whole chassis and suspension in hardnose blue and sterling silver, it gives a great finish cannot reccomend it enough.

Follow link for pic of my car at rob roy hillclimb in may this year (me driving) : http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/chequer57/_MG_0516_LOWRES.jpg

cheers, Grant 🙂

DieSchnelleKafer ·

thanks everyone, oh yeah that exhaust system sounds the bomb!

thanks grant, you FINISHED it by the time you were 14? wow👍, that thing looks like so much fun 👍 its a 1200 right? man top job on that, and yeah about the money thing.. or should i say the lack of, its alright though i have a channel on youtube which has ads around the video which makes me money $$$ around $50 a week plus the money i earn weekly, so money isn't really a concern i just love the metal work aspect of this build..

POR 15 = great shit, i dream about the day i have the chassis coated with it and a whole bunch of parts ready to be fittted haha

cheers,
-Blair

stagvee40 ·

Yep 1200, geee i should start finding a way of making more money than just washing the odd car or seven! The 1200 is only blueprinted, balanced, lightly ported, and finely tuned to get every bit out of it (the regulations are very strict) But they still get around Eastern Creek in 1:57's and Phillip Island i suspect maybe breaking 2 min (the better drivers among us though) What carbies are you gonna run and how much lift do you have on the cam?(if ya can remeber! lol) Good luck with the rest of the build, keep us posted......

Cheers,

Grant

😁😁😁😁

Well done on getting to the end of the body work.
What a mission. Kudos

matberry ·

Well done x2, fantastic job, very impressed with the quality of your work. I must say though Marcus, the end of rust repairs is still a long way yet to the end of the bodywork, but a milestone none the less. 🙂

Flintstones ·

good on you for persisting through rust repairs.👍👍
Many kids your age would have given up by now.

Now the repairs are done, it's time to get the body straight. You going to file finish?

Cheers

Bizarre ·

Congratulations 👍

SebastienPeek ·

That is great!
Looking the goods so far, can't wait to see this with the Type 4 in!

This whole thread is great, just read it through again and am genuinely glad I did.
Flintstones is right, many "kids" would have given up on the rust repairs, but you, you repaired them wonderfully!

DieSchnelleKafer ·

thanks everyone, i still havnt finished the rust repair sections, there are a few little spots but thats it,

i cant express how many times i have thought of giving up, so many barricades. but hell, once this thing is done, im sure it will all be worth it.
i want to give the blasting business (stripped bare soda blasting perth) some credit, i walked away from that car knowing its in good hands, sure enough it was a fantastic job

well guys, im gonna stop talking, drink a coffee chill, clean the shed and then get back to work on it

It's the art of using a dolly and hammer to adjust the panel and using a body file to let you know if you have adjusted it enough to make the panel straight.
This way you don't have to use bog (plastic filler) to fill in area's that should have been adjusted.

Hope I explained it clearly for you.

Cheers
D

DieSchnelleKafer ·

ohh, well i dont think this car will require "thick" amounts of filler, just lots of small areas with thin filler on it, because someone has already dollied out the dents, and they did it to a good qaulity so i will just re apply the filler in the areas needed.

5lam ·

Love your work!!
This is going to look amazing once its done. Props to you

patina ·

Hey mate,
I really like your thread and your bug. Cant wait to see it finished!
Are you going to be using semaphores? if so do you think you'll put other little blinkers?
Just wondering if it's legal to just use the semaphores.
cheers

Turbo54 ·

Hey Mate, looks great.
You should Test the Stratos Silver on a test panel before you paint your whole car in it.
I tested it and it looks great in the sun but personally thought it hides the great lines of an early beetle in the shadows. Just a thought.
Also what are the gaps on either side under the backseat inbetween the guard inners and where the firewall comes down. Never seen this before.
My oval joins the bottom section of the firewall to the guard inners.
Anyway, keep up the great work.

Are you going to be using semaphores? if so do you think you'll put other little blinkers?
Just wondering if it's legal to just use the semaphores.
cheers
i will be putting some blinkers up front and back and have a switch to switch from flashing blinkers to semaphores so i can spare using the semaphores if i dont want to

it is legal to just have semaphores as it was orginally equipped on the car

psimitar ·

Nice work dude 🙂

You should look up KBS. It's Oz version of Por15 and just as good yet a fair bit cheaper. Did my floorpan in the stuff and it's great 🙂

Doug Sweetman ·

Hi mate, I have been watching your build on here and on NoH2O also..... A sweet car in the makings, no doubt about it.

Your metal skills are very impressive for a dude your age... I did my first bug at 17 with my old man and none of my welding was as good as yours.

You still looking to sell the 59 ?

thanks Doug! merry Christmas as well man
i am going to invest in a tig welder in a few months time, lets see how that works out 🙂
The 59 is still here, going cheap but its a little rough

thanks

Doug Sweetman ·

Merry Christmas also, hope Santa brought you a TIG welder and time to use it 🙂

You have pm re the 59.

Turbo54 ·

Hi, I can't find the replacement panels on the site you listed, do you know the part number or did you contact him and have the rear quarters and apron made. Thanks t54

psimitar ·

For the rear cargo area you'll have to make them yourself. Far as I'm aware the cargo/bulkhead panel comes as an entire panel.
Try VW Heritage in the UK as they have a full listing of all Beetle parts. If they don't have it then no one will, well maybe West Coast or CIP1 but thats about it.

Quite easy to make tho. Bit of 0.8mm steel and make a cardboard template. For the lip that goes up the rear arch you just pie cut and bend it up and then weld the pie cuts back together. Also means you aren't using 0.6mm brazilian crap. 🙂

DieSchnelleKafer ·

hi t54, the rear apron was made by a man by the name of wolf. you can now find them here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1020614
the rear qaurters were made by a company called kdf parts, tho i would recommend these ones: http://www.wolfparts.com/shop/index.php?cPath=21&sort=4a&page=2&osCsid=b3cb185ea2433e2e0fa77c268f7a3729
because i found that kdf parts one had a bad fit, to hard to explain

hey psimitar, a good fellow has cut them out of his car and sent them to me, better original metal 🤘

psimitar ·

well yes and no, great that it's prig VW metal but at the same time it's ages by 40-50 yrs and that weakens metal. Still orig VW metal was made much better than even most steels these days.

I like making stuff and the front heater channel parts with nelson hat threaded plate were fun. Way I made should see another 50 yrs thro 🙂

Turbo54 ·

thanks mate, that is where I normally get my replacement panels. I have now ordered rear quarters, j tubes, and a fronr wheel replacement panels.
Keep it moving, T54

For the OP. Love the Kafer brace bar. Were'd you get it from? Personally I like the 5 bar set up as the shox towers get added strength from the 2 front links 🙂

POR 15 does come up nice and shiney aye? Did mine in KBS and the bottom was great but the top got solvent flash bubbles in it so it's rust proof but not as smooth as the underside 🙁 Still you see more of the underside than under the carpets so it worked out well 🙂

Yea, I was mainly meaning owned by the Yanks but even if they were designed here they're still crap. GM and Ford lost their styling panash come the mid-70's and only American GM and Ford found it again when they used the 60's shape of the Mustang and Camaro/Charger.
Holden need to use the 'E' and 'F' series cars to get some street cred back 🙂

and the gearbox is a mendeola sequential...

type 4? yeah sure, we have the 1800 type 4 sitting in the shed, its all done, dtm kit, dual dell's, yada yada...

this weekend should be crunch time. i will get some mates around and we can lift the chassis out of the shed, all the breaks should be done and the 1200 in, so it should be driving 🙂 and then comes the sanding and painting.. finally!

thanks mate 🙂 in order to minimalise brush marks you have to get a patch wet, then go over all of it in one direction. then dont touch it again. by the time it is semi solid, all the brush marks are gone. this stuff is fantastic, but remember to get the thing spotless and make sure to do the full process, marine clean, metal ready, chassis black.

Yup, same as the Oz version of POR15, that being KBS. feather brush strokes in one direction whilst still wet and you get a lovely smooth finish.

Loving this build 😀

I have a perfect rust repaired early type bonnet. Been sitting for years, i would go look at it again, to consider its usage for my oval. However, you're closer to the road with your oval than I at the moment, so if you're in need. Please feel free to let us know.

thanks everyone 🙂 its so great to finally get here with only a small way to go now, ive actually decided to change the game plan with the car. at first i really wanted something loud, fast and scary but the past few months has made me realise what volkswagens are really about.. Cruising and the crowd you get amongst..

so any plans for a huge fire breathing engine have been scrapped, and im now turning my attention to getting rid of them damn solid mounts i thought was a good idea aswell as adding sound deadening and a nice interior.

ive uploaded a few photos of what it is now on facebook and everyone loves the thing, whether they think its cool or cute it doesnt bother me aslong as they like the thing!
so this is the new plan with the car, a cool cruiser so i can hit the beaches up at summer and take things cruisy 👍

Pumba ·

Did you buy the kit local or overseas ???
cheers shane.

vwvic ·

This has been a great build to watch. The finished product is totally awsome ,one hell of a first car
Enjoy it mate 👍👍👍

DieSchnelleKafer ·

we bought the TMI kit overseas directly from the tmi website. some reason i ordered the vinyl edging but they gave me the crapier edging, a bit dissapointing. Sound deading went on a few days ago, i layered the floor pan and bottom section of the firewall with the stock looking Tar board. i layred that twice thick! and i used a product called "STP" on the top half of the firewall and that was also twice thick. after i did this i took it for a drive, i wasnt impressed for the effort and money i spent. i realised i hadnt blocked up the passagers between the engine bay and cabin, so after i took that for a drive with them blocked i couldnt believe the difference $2 worth of foam would do! blocking them passagers up gets rid of the high "tapping" and other metallic sounds. so the next stage of sound deading will be to redo that foam with closed cell and sound deaden the front wheel wells and doors and roof. will keep everyone updated.

Pumba ·

Thanks for the info, shame they got the edging wrong, thats what worries me about buying one from overseas your stuck with what they send but i need to get one to finnish my oval.
cheers shane.

DieSchnelleKafer ·

My word. I am 22 now, where has the time gone? the oval has sat dormant in my parents shed, in its restored state since 2014. I am keen to re-engage with the classic VW community. Lets see where this goes.

Oh yes how it does. I have never actually driven the bug out to a good location with the DSLR and taken some quality snaps with it. I will take it out next weekend and take the time to get some photos of everything.

Unfortunately many of the photos from this thread have disappeared due to the fact that ImageShack scrwed me. Sigh. I feel as if many of the photos may have been lost for good because some of the times i did not back them up on hard drive.

There are a number of things that i will be doing to the oval in the next month or so, fiddly bits that i just never got around too. The sorts of things that have become apparently necessary after driving it on and off for a few years. I will document these modifications here.

Thanks Mate. Good luck with your sons build, is there a build thread going? 🙂

So the bug has been driven a few miles since it was first put on the road (around 1500 km). The funny thing about these car is that they can be so enjoyable to drive that some times you put off the small jobs. The car was registered in 2013 and since then the engine has only been out of the car once. A number of leaks have now established themselves and hence grime and grot has started to build up. There is a leak coming from both swing axle boots, the rear main seal, the fuel pressure regulator and the alternator stand. Considering all of these leaks i gathered that the best solution was to pull the motor/transaxle and give it all a refresh.

Pulling the drivetrain also allows me to sort some other pressing matters.

1. I need to reinforce the body where i cut it away for the kafer brace.
2. I need to re-jet/tune the motor. This required the motor to be removed anyway.
3. The rear apron needs to be re-enforced where i cut sheet metal away. The rear apron was made removable so i could remove the engine easily. It turns out that it need to be reinforced to put some rigidity back in to the structure.

Let the work begin...

DieSchnelleKafer ·

I can never seam to capture this colour accurately. If people saw this oval in the flesh they would realize that this colour is not at all what it looks like on the forums.

DieSchnelleKafer ·

The engine is out and now i am starting on those fiddly bits. First thing was first. All that grime had to be cleaned off.

It turns out the leak was coming from the transaxle input shaft. Upon inspection of the seal it was some no name brand. Another seal has been ordered.

All the parts have been zip locked and stashed away. I have forgotten how little these vehicles need to be dissembled to remove the engine.

Off to the shops tomorrow. I'll be purchasing all new fluids for the trans axle and engine as well as a bunch of stainless fasteners. I am finding a bunch of bolts/nuts/washers etc that have been installed by a previous me that frankly do not do the part they are on justice. I will keep with the normal trend and try to make as much of it Stainless socket head cap screws.. you know, because race car.

Thanks Mate. I am not using my own profile to post this next reply due to it being locked out of AVDS for some reason. I have contacted the forum admin to see how i can get it restored.

So the engine was given a nice bath at the local carwash.

This time around i used some RTV sealant to try and seal the top of the crankcase up a bit better. Hopefully it will not be a source for oil leaks anymore.

The engine shroud was bolted back on.

From there the engine was run up on the test stand and tuned. It turned out that the source of the rough running was due to two of the idle circuit mixture screws giving a false sense of "seating". When i thought that the idle mixture screw had seated correctly (critical for tuning process), what was actually going on was that the screw spring was fully compressing. Once that issue was fixed, every cylinder started to properly respond to adjustment of the mixture screw.

Whilst tuning the engine i believe i disturbed the accumulation of dirt in the bowl of the webers, i kept having issues where the idle jets would clog themselves after giving the engine some reving (more fuel load).. I pulled both carbs apart and cleaned them out with a petrol wash. All was sweet after that.

The engine was running tickety-boo after all the tuning was completed. Nice idle, great cold starts, good throttle response. It was time to put the engine back in.

The rear half of the fuel system was completely re-plumbed. Instead of the previous rubber fuel line, the rear half of the car recieved 1/4 inch stainless line and olive fittings tied all together with an industrial hydraulic fitting sealant.

The last missing piece rocked up on my front door at just the right time, the transaxle input shaft seal!

Uber Kafer ·

Somewhere among all this work i also reinforced the rear sheet metal section near the shock towers. A previous me has cut away at the body to clearance the kafer brace. I had every intention to come back in good time and do this reinforcement however it got away from me, and after driving the car for 5 years i am finally getting it done lol.

These brackets may look like overkill however the forces that need to be reacted are in unusual directions, that and the whole system needs to work around the shock absorber... this is why it was made out of 5mm plate.

There car is back on the road now. I have had a oxygen sensor plugged in to the exhaust with a live read out in the cabin. Returning 13 at idle and 12.5 at WOT. (approx).

I have found that there is a flat spot while gradually accelerating. I will do some research and possibly fiddle with the accelerator pumps.

Enjoy the photos. 😎
