Three cables to the coil, with ignition on
one has power......This goes to the + positive terminal ?
one does not have power...........This goes to - negative terminal ?
another from the distributor (points) this also goes to the - negative terminal ?
Have I got this correct?
Thanks
Don

Only one wire goes to the negative terminal. That's the one from the dizzy, you've got that right. And the other two go onto the positive terminal. One is your power from your ignition, the other is just something else that is also using that power. Like the fuel shutoff solenoid or autochoke.

Hope this helps.

Donn, does your car have a tacho?

If so thats the extra wire on the low tension side

What year and model is the car yr working on ??

If the other wire goes to the electric choke and air idle valve on your carby

then this wire goes to the + side of the coil as it supplies power to the carby choke when ignition turned on

there is NO SUCH thing as Dumb questions Don..

The power lead should go to the + on the coil..
+power also needs to go to the electric choke and fuel shut off solenoid.. also +

the other coil lead comes from the distributor [with points and condenser] --

The 3rd wire may also go to the -- if its connected to a tacho.

3rd wire doesn't go to the oil sender..z???

see Don, lots of different answers...

so. no stupid questions..

many beetles have two wires... ++ positive to coil
then another wire from that terminal to the electric choke and the carburetor cutoff fuel [electromagnetic] switch.

the -- wire from the distributor goes to the -- connector on the coil... tachometer wire also goes to that terminal....

3rd wire brings up lots of questions... lol

cheers

Think that will answer my question thanks fellas, mostly my problems stem from the fact that it's a buggy and while it has been wired very profesionaly the colours etc don't line up with any wiring diagrams I have, there is a fuel cut off and a tacho but I can check those with a circuit tester to see if they have power when they should, so I reckon yooz av dun good agen, thanks. 馃憤
