Hi Lee
i am in Brisbane southside, would be fantastic if someone could help me out on this one as i am really stressed and i'm on a major downer haven't slept good in weeks. let me tell you the full story. i bought this 72 convertible off ebay 4500 a few weeks ago my husband and brother flew down to sydney to drive it back they got as far as kempsey it back fired a couple of times so they pulled over and she wouldn't start again. It got car carriered back to brisbane straight to a vw mechanic. He informed me it had a broken torque converter he found one and replaced it, then told me he started it and it made a terrible noise and has a split crankshaft... told me it would be around 3000 to fix her up. She had the motor reconditioned 65 ks ago by the lady i bought it from. So i haven't even sat in my dream car as yet and has cost me a small fortune.... i have been told by fellow aussie dubbers it would be cheaper for me to find a 2nd hand motor... so here i am broke and looking for help

Hopefully someone will have a cheap engine for You Deb..
Very strange about the torque converter....??
they usually don't break....??
and a second opinion on the engine... ??
engine backfiring could be a simple thing or a major thing...
maybe get the mechanic to write down everything He has done so far.. in detail...
then tell Him You are going to consumer affairs or ombudsman
to check it out...
Hardest thing is getting You car back from Him....
best of luck

PS: Really need your husband to replace all the vacuum hoses
not expensive.. just use transmission oil hose or high pressure air hose as used on trucks...
You are going to find it hard to find a VW mechanic trained to work on automatic beetles... LEE

I agree with Lee, breaking a torque converter is increadibly hard and it shouldn't cause a car to backfire or or not start.
similarly with a crankshaft, and if the crankshaft is indeed split then you probably wouldn't be able to start the car.

I think someone is being ripped off.👍

not sure if its of any help to you, but
I have placed an add on here today for a semi auto car less engine.
I have taken the engine out and I'm using it in a non auto car. all the auto parts are there.
before I took the motor out I drove the car and the auto works fine
only trouble is I'm on the other side of Australia.
I will take any parts you need off the car and pack/ send them over but you will need to buy the whole thing before I strip it for you.... this still may be a cheaper way... not sure
let me know if I can help

+1 Vw cranks are usually forged and the engines don't even come close to producing enough power to do any damage to a crank.

No reply from Debbie in a while... rekon the poor gal's lost hope 🙁👎 ???
Way to go hey... first bug, all hyped up and it majorly and expensively dies on its way up, far far away from home when you already blown all your pennies to buy the car in the first place.

For the record, breaking a crankshaft is way more common than you may think.
They were doing it occasionally even from new!!!
Depending on the actual break they can often still be driven, I've heard stories of driving for a thousand miles or more after 'the incedent'(and yes, sometimes a backfire).

Bingo, I know of 3 that have snapped cranks, for no obvious reason either, one was being driven by my mates mum who is painfully slow
and I know the story from someone in US working at the vw garage back in the day when the old girl with the 36hp oval bug came in complaining about how much oil it was using, when they opened it up the crank was snapped in 2 and needed a full engine rebuild she told them to much $$, just put it back together and she will keep adding oil 😂🤪

Driving a 36hp 'painfully slow' - particularly in 4th - would be a really good way to break a crank.
