Fuel Issue Flooding even

Hello, I have a 1200 single port bug the issue I have is it starts first time everytime on the first crank of the starter. However if I drive it around and eventually stop and turn it off next time I go to start it within a few hours of last starting it it appears to be flooded. it takes awhile longer to start and the smell fuel and puff of smoke come from the exhaust sometimes.

I have tried 2 new needle valves also tried a few washers under the needle valve to contact the float earlier its got new fuel pump and recent carby kit installed. If it sits for say 12-24 hours it st馃arts almost instantly. Any tips on this one Guys?

Thanks

Hi, maybe the fuel pressure is to high, you could get it checked between the pump and carb, i think you can shim the fuel pump to reduce the pressure if it is to high, you need to check a manual to find out the correct pressure, probably between 1.5PSI and 3PSI

Yep, I'd look at fuel pressure and pump pushrod. Pressure should be 3psi or less, pushrod should be 13mm protrusion on max stroke, check pressure first, then pump pushrod. I had one recently, where a fresh looking Brazilian pump had a pushrod at 12.4mm but put out an erratic 7psi, same symptoms as you, because the stroke was already less than spec, replaced the pump, and bingo, 3psi steady.

Also if your engine is overheating, the extra heat expands the fuel in the system, increasing the pressure, once the engine is off as the cooling system and fuel flow stop.

Have You checked down the throat of the carby to see if the fuel is overflowing..

You can shim the pump to get the correct PSI..

OR file, grind the pushrod...

PS: when an engine is flooded...
You hold the accelerator pedal to the floor to start it...
normally it will start...

also fill the bowl of the carby up..
disconnect the fuel pump to see if it is the pump...
the engine should go until the bowl is dry...

I will measure the fuel pump PSI turns out it is new and also from Brazil. Thanks

sounds like worn or burnt points.馃お

Hey thanks for your reply but the points were new 2klms is this still OK?ago also what do you think off the carbi having a small crack that allows fuel to leak into the cylinder heads. someone told me to remove the carbi suspend it up in the air fill the float bowl with fuel and look for leaks. anyone done this or had a cracked carbi its a 28pict?

Thanks again guys

that is flooding....

the fuel bowl on Your carby will overflow into the inlet manifold and into the engine...

and into the engine oil... not good...

oil needs changing if it smells like petrol..

sounds like You have a major flooding problem...

make sure the float can still move when You put the top on..

sometimes the float sticks..
allowing fuel to pour down the carby into the engine...

take the air flilter off and stick Your finger down there or shine a torch down there...
to see if fuel is pouring down the throat....

carbies don't usually crack unless something cracks them..

another thing You can do...
take the carby off.... leave it connected to the pump
and get someone to turn the engine over while You are holding the carby still... and level..
if fuel pours out.... its flooding...

PS: don't use a cigarette lighter....馃

Well I checked it out and basically too much fuel was getting into the bowl I changed the float needle valve back to the old one whihc is worn and it seems to start sooner without the issues.

The one i took out was new it was a pin with a small ball bearing in it and the one i put back in is just a pin.

In playing with them both I think the ball one might not of shut off completely causin the additional fuel to flow over and flood that thing.

Thanks for the tips and advice. Oh has anybody else had any issues with the ball type valves?

Thanks馃槀
