Just went to the Autotek HO to buy a new momo steering wheel, but have walked away empty handed because we weren't sure what boss (there were two possibilities) would be appropriate.
The plan is to go back tomorrow with the old steering wheel in hand, but I thought I'd try my luck and see if anyone knew what part number for a momo steering boss would suit a 1974 1303.
A picture of the spline is below, which I think you'll find is the later type of boss.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Craig
Its hard to tell from your photo, the later hub has a fine spline with a taper at the base of the spline section. I used a 8010 on Davids bug
MOMO Part #: 0248 - Volkswagen Beetle Up to 6/1974
MOMO Part #: 8010 - Volkswagen Beetle 6/1974-1990
Steve
PS I bought the one for Davids on eBay

Thanks for that Steve,
When I was at the shop today they pulled out three possibilities and the 8010 was one of them, and looked the most likely, and yes there are some tapers both before and after on my spline.
My car is May 1974, so the cut off date is possibly not quite precise.
I've pulled the steering wheel off and will take it with me tomorrow, and try my luck.
What could possibly go wrong 🤓
Cheers

Hi Craig
Everything usually goes wrong with me. Those cut off dates may not be precise with Australian made cars.

A couple of more photos I took this morning so I can add print them out and take to the shop, on the off chance that they help.
Can anyone confirm for sure whether it is late or early spline.

Hi Craig
Give me 1/2 an hour and I will post up some pictures of both types.

Hi Craig
I could only get my hands on a early column. Yours must be the late style.

Thanks Steve.
That's certainly a rusty column!!

Its rusty all right, wire brush will fix it up OK

It's definately a small spline taper shaft Craig,
The big spline have a circlip like Steves and dont taper on the shaft
So any water cooled vw 74 up to 90ish and porsche 70s/80s boss will fit

Thanks guys,
The people at Autotek were really helpful (which they should be since I was about to hand them money, but we all know that isn't always the case), and I walked out with a new wheel and their last 8010 boss. We took every possible measurement off the steering wheel and compared it to the boss, and it all seems to line up, but the proof will be in the fitting.
Apparently momo don't make that boss any more, so if you want a momo steering wheel you'll have to source an aftermarket boss that will fit.
