Questions about a standard model

Ian Bugden ·

Hi all,
I have just bought a low milage standard '65 beetle. I am having difficulty working out if this model came with painted or chrome hubcaps. The lady I bought it from was the second owner and she had it for 30 years and it always has had chrome hubcaps for her.

The other issue is the bumpers, the one one the front is a "euro blade" - no overiders or holes and the one on the rear looks like it is a over rider one but without the over riders (the square holes are there).

Next is the fuel tank. I know standards did not come with a fuel gauge, but did they have a reserve lever? The lady had fitted a fuel gauge but that will come out.

Is anyone out there a standard buff as this car is really close to 100% correct minus these 3 little issues.

Cheers

Ian.

Hi Ian

they did have the reserve lever I believe...??
standards came with painted hubcaps and no bright trim..
two red thin stripes on the sides... from memory..

bumpers were painted also...
no over riders at all....
no glovebox lid
no interior lamp..
interior only on the top of roof... none on sides..
no chrome on running boards..

the rear bumper sounds like a new one....
as they usually have all the holes.... lol

the painted hubcaps and bumpers looked terrible,,,

then the Custom came out...
chromed hubcaps and stainless steel blade bumpers with no over riders...
still no interior light or glovebox lid...

To the best that my memory serves the standard beetle had painted hubcaps & bumper bars,no fuel gauge was fitted & the fuel tap was finished in the early sixties. This was my early days in the VW dealership. Cheers Les

I used to see standards when going to School....
painted bumpers, no chrome strips - painted hubcaps...

then the customs....

they looked terrible compared to the Deluxe beetles... IMHO..

most of these cars had chromed hubcaps , bumpers , running board and side strips added..

so they looked nearly normal...lol IMHO

Hi

My first bug was 63 Standard model, every week after I got paid I would go to the local wrecker and buy deluxe parts, glove box lid, interior light, fuel gauge etc

Sounds like your one has needed a new rear bar at one time.

Mine had a reserve lever, it was a good anti theft measure to have the lever in the 1/2 way position where it would turn off the fuel supply

Yes steve,

Many VW Owners don't know that at 45 degrees...
the fuel is turned off....

same as when on fire... turning fuel off will usually save a beetle....

the bumpers, hubcaps, door handle, boot n bonnet handles were all painted with NO holes painted a grey colour

the fuel tank didnt have a hole for the fuel gauge sender unit and had the reserve lever fitted

there was no glove box lid or even holes for the hinges and was different shape to the deluxe type

there was no interior light it hada plastic cover over it ( i still have a one )

the door switches had the holes but were fitted with platic blank covers ( still have )

the bonnet had no chrome strip or holes and no top VW round badge also no side trims

the door windows had painted 1/4 vents surrounds and the main window trim was painted black

the front rear and side windows didnt have trim either

the seats were plain vinal with no ribbing

the dash had no chrome except for the speedo bezzel and the speaker and fuel gauge panels diidnt have holes

the head liner was only in the center of the roof and the carpet was different from the deluxe there was no passenger foot rest

hope this helps I had 2 standards over the years

They did regain a couple of items over the years

My mate had a 64 and a 66 standard, the 66 came from a 1 owner of 25 years and was very unmolested
Both had metal strips down the sides but not on the hood and the 66 even had a factory glovebox lid but still had no fuel gauge, only the center section headliner and the coles cafeteria upholstry.

Interestingly though it was ordered from the factory with deluxe bumpers and even had the upper stabilisor bars for the towel rails.

My Science teacher from high school also has a birch green 64 standard he bought new, some of you may remember it was featured in an NRMA openroad mag about 15 years ago, It;s called snoopy and has a big snoopy chraracter picture on the decklid
Its been over a good 10 years since ive seen it but i do remember it having satin grey bumpers and hubcaps

THE PLAIN SEAT MATERIAL [VINYL] AND DOOR TRIMS ETC

LOOKED TERRIBLE.. IMHO

That is intersting as mine has the chrome work on the side, chrome bars and chrome hub caps. The headliner is only in the middle, no glove box door - or holes for hinges, painted quarter windows, no chome in front rear or side rubbers, one sunvisor, basic brick red interior. When did the "Custom" come out?? It definatly doesn't have the holes in the body for the over ridders. The lady I bought it from said she had the bumpers replaced as they had started to rust, and the origional ones were chrome. It also has no exterior mirrors as well. I will have to look at the interior light too as I think it has one but I am not sure. It also did not come with the windscreen washer just a gromet in it.s place.

Joel ·

Every standard I've seen after 64 have had a normal metal chrome strip on the side, but im betting they were painted satin grey originally, most by now have had atleast chrome hubcaps fitted.

Custom was just what they called 67 standards for some reason.
Ive only seen 2 but both had a 1300 and custom script on the decklid, same style as deluxes had

, one sunvisor, basic brick red interior.

yes forgot about the sunvisor it was daggy cardboard and not vinal linke the deluxe and one only

isnt the reserve lever under the steering column on front cab wall?
you would see it i would think.
~Good Luck~

The up-side of the Standard was (because of the reduced soundproofing etc) that they were lighter. The 'Bathurst cars' were Standards, for that reason, however they still felt painfully slow up the Mountain.🥲

Out of interest since I'm off to Bathurst tomorrow what was the best placing the VW ever scored?

How about 1st in class, 1963 Armstrong 500.👍

the reserve/off tap is in the middle above the tunnel ..

it can be switched quite easily with your left foot....

as the engine spluttered... lol

OK on the armstrong 500 win in class..

I always thought the standards looked terrible...

and they were advertised too....

as they were the cheapest...

I had a '69 std, I think fully imported

b/j, swing
4 wheel drum brakes
no chrome, windows or body, black painted 1/4 vent, but chrome on the door wind up glass
headliner in the center
glove box lid
single speed black knob wipers but 6volt system
12v diameter gene and appearing starter but both 6 volt
1200 cc engine
4 stud black and white 2 tone wheels
bonnet pull on the left under the dash

Ian Bugden ·

Yeah I am aware of where a fuel lever goes (I have a original '59 model and also a '60 both have it) The reason I ask is mine has carpet over where it would go and I don't wish to put that out as it is very well glued in. I am yet to look at the outlet on the bottom of the tank to see what it is. I know the last owner installed a fuel gauge so she would have had to install a new tank as well.

As best I can tell the car is a standard but optioned up a bit with the bright work on the sides and bonnet, and probably the bumpers and hubcaps as well.

Does anybody know if you get the Birth Certificate does it show dealer fitted options? Or even factory ones?
