In this video Trent my apprentice applies the front brake tap and proceeds to do a crowd pleasing burnout , starting off in 2nd gear , shifting to 3rd and then shifting again to 4th . He lines up against the V8 ford and runs our very first 12 sec pass with a 12.8 @ 101mph on 165 kumho street tyres (stock axles)

in the mid 1990's Dave Butler bought his supercharged drag bug to Valla for the VW spectacular . He took his bug around the track at Raleigh Raceway for a couple of demo laps .

In 1991 I decided to try speedway racing with a VW full chassis super-sedan . It was powered by a mid-mounted 2.4litre (88x92) type-1 methanol injected supercharged engine .
To be honest , this car had much more potential than I could get from it ..... mortgage , not long married , baby on the way , and opened new business .... just a plain lack of funds was available for the race car .

in 1989 , brother Rod decided to purchase a formula vee for racing . He removed the 1200 engine and fitted a 2276cc twin webber engine that I had built for him .
He took it to Huntley hillclimb and was very fast on slicks , until one day the vee ended up-side-down with him in it after a rear suspension mounting broke . Fortunatley Rod was not injured , but the same could not be said for the vee.....

THIS WOULD HAVE TO BE MY MOST FAVOURITE VW MOTORSPORT VIDEO , racing at Newcastle motordrome for the TOOHEYS 100LAP ENDURO in 1992 .
before the main 100 lap race we had to go through 5 qualifying heats ....this is one of those heats .

I have had a great time over the years despite a few individuals that have really tried to make things very hard for me (no need for names , they know who they are) , but it has always been my incredible passion for my VW's that has got me through it .
I have got some great footage of stan at Valla in the injected open-wheeler and will try to put it up tomorrow . Not too sure about craig though , he has never really done anything that impresses me .... LOL . only kidding craig !!I have only been through a small portion of my videos and will look for more on craig .
I also have a lot of footage of the Jo Smiths 76 green bug and the original Hellbug that Jeff Unwin drove but it is buggered . I will put up a couple of samples and will replace them if I can find a better copy . I used to copy the same footage twice incase this happened , but 20 years ago didnt realise that all the tapes would deteriorate .
I havent even looked at my Hillclimb championships videos yet , so will try to do that tonight... sleep is so overrated.

Breaking the back of Mako .... little wonder they were only a bed frame with a seat and a spot to bolt the front suspension and the 1200cc engine.... suppose that one less Mako out there in Historic Formula Vee Land.

yes it did , back then it had a 2.9 type-4 with twin 48IDA webers (which I believe are now on Matt Berrys Hillbilly racer) and later that year changed from the webers to injection .
For the past 5 years the sports sedan has been running a temporary (throw together) engine so that my staff , my son , my mates and myself could use it .
The original 2.9 engine went into my turbo oval back in 2005 and was turbocharged . Now that I have built a complete new engine for my oval , the original 2.9 is being refreshened with a new crank & rods , pistons & barrels , the type-4 titanium valve heads off the oval engine and will be fitted back into the sports sedan. Nothing will be used from the current 2440 engine as I want to keep it as a complete spare .
The sports sedan will stay in the race shed now until the new engine is ready . Cant wait to drive it again with the big engine.......🤪

this is the oldest piece of vw footage that I have . It is not brilliant quality , but still viewable . The full chassis super-sedan affecionately known as 'Herbie' was a crowd favourite . In this vid Bob Marskell (owner/driver) shows his full potential .
This is the same car I drove at Goulburn speedway in 1991/1992 . Herbie is now retired and lives in the customer carpark at WPVW.....The supercharged engine was sold off in pieces but I still have the methanol injection and the supercharger . The supercharger is currently fitted to Ben Fords' WPVW drag bug....

I took the entire rotary conversion and 5-speed out of my bug in 1997 , fitted a 1916cc engine and trans , and sold it to a guy near Bathurst . I serviced it for a while as he travelled down to visit his relatives , but I heard about 12 months ago that it had been stolen in Sydney and trashed....
The blue notch in the vids is the same notch that I have at my shop now restoring it for KD . I was writing for VWMA on the resto but there has been a temporary hold on the project as KD has being doing his doctors degree at uni , just got married and bought a house .
SO MUCH FUN !! ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE....we even look back at the catasrophes , and still laugh !!

this video is entirely of Huntley hill 2000 , round 5 of the NSW hillclimb championships . Wpvw was there and set another new track record in the sports sedan 2001-3000 class . This record still stands today , 10 years on (25.46 secs for the 658 meter climb)......
since then I have set a new club record in the same class of 24.45 secs.....

Dear Wayne...who would have thought that somebody would have captured Canberra drags footage !! October,1988 was washed out & it was actually3/1989 that it was rescheduled.The run with the 350 Chev. beetle was out of 3..the vw took the lot on a rebuilt transmission & engine that was not fired etc until it arrived ar Canberra.The diff was destroyed doing wheelstands after the racing..you were close though.Ross
