Barn find fastback - what to pay??

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/86697/barn-find-fastback-what-to-pay

Volksy85 ·

Hi guys

On my travels today I noticed an old fastback tucked under the carport of an old weatherboard, half obscured by a bush, with two flat tyres. Pure barn find! Its a 1600 auto, and im assuming its very early 70s as it has the newer style front indicators.

It has its original B&W vic plates which is a bonus and given its been undercover for years its avoided the worst of the weather. I cant see much rust besides a 5c piece size spot under the rear window, and it is mainly surface. That said, I havent looked under the boot/bonnet yet.

Owner says last time he drove it (several years ago) it ran fine and its been parked up since.

The bad:

Its rough. The body seems prett straight but there are a few dings, and most of the rubbers are knackered. The dash pad is in good shape except for a massive split in the middle which I assume is courtesy of UV rays. Lenses are ok but a few are cracked, bumpers good, front badge missing, glass is good.

I havent looked under the carpet but I assume it could be harbouring rust...

Its straight, looks quite rust free, but it is quite rough!

What should I pay? I have seen 'decent' driveable cars for 2-3k so im guessing not much.

thanks

Pics 😵‍💫

helbus ·

If there is rust showing, there is ten or twenty times more inside the panels.

To buy as a rough, unknown mechanically, unregistered vehicle. It is a desirable car. I would say no more than $500

Volksy85 ·

Roger that

Im thinking the real item of value for me is the original rego plates! If I can pick it up for a few hundred, I will likely clean it up as best I can and on-sell it. Not looking to profit massively, it would just be cool to salvage a 'barn find' and have a bit of fun!

Sorry no pics - its really wedged in under the carport, and it would have to be dragged out to take decent pics.

They rust internally/invisibly?

helbus ·

All cars rust from the inside out. Even aluminium panel cars corrode.

It starts from when the steel sheet is made, before the panels are pressed.

The steel has to be bare to electric resistance spot weld the car together.

Volksy85 ·

ok thanks

so it would be a good pickup for $300 or so, even if it just meant relisting on ebay as a parts car?

vlad01 ·

I dibs parts 😀

Major ·

Hey mate i would be keen if the car was complete. I am looking for a project fastback to do up as a daily driver or one that is already done. Let me know if you are going to sell it.😉

Volksy85 ·

Great!

As per my sig I am in the hunt for a kombi. This is just an opportunity to save an old fastback from scrap, and I wont be seeking to turn a big profit for it. Stay tuned.

vlad01 ·

hmmm another fasty? I might consider as well. Might be nice to drive a vw for a daily instead of a commy.

Major ·

vlad01, eyes off. Sharing is caring. You have one, I have none😢

vlad01 ·

I don't have anything besides the notch. That ain't going anywhere for a long time 🙅

Volksy85 ·

Hopefully be able to pop in and make an offer this arvo. I will snap a couple of pics.

Major ·

Vlad01 my mistake. Still it is one type 3 more then me.😀

Volksy85 ·

Had a really close look tonight

Bad:
Floor rusty under back seats
Parcel shelf is soft in places
Dash pad is cracked badly
Some less serious rust around engine hatch
Rust in door sill near front of pass side door near the floor

Good:
Engine looks terrific, trying to fire it up in the morning
Doors/door frames great
Roof gutters great
Front boot area great
Seats are in great shape
Carpets are pretty good
Headlining pretty good

Whats it worth??

vlad01 ·

well i used to have a fasty... and a square and another notch.

All were mere learning cars. I learned all about late type 3 from them all, all the differences between the years.

I first had 73 then 70 then 72 and now sticking to my 71.

The notch is my first serious project. Now all i need is a job that pays better than centrelink 😂
Still doesn't stop me buying stuff for it 👍

Major ·

Some pics would be good. Would help to get an idea of price.

Cheers Paul

Volksy85 ·

A few snaps...hard to get anything good given where its stuck!

Volksy85 ·

Actually 2 questions

Whats it worth "as is" if we cant get the engine going?

Whats it worth if she runs well and the auto shifts nicely?

jhp1 ·

Its a fatty, maybe 100 bucks hardly what you'd call a "Barn Find"

If the engine is shagged then theres not much else to salvage.

matt ·

at the end of the day it is worth whatever you are willing pay for it, if you are a fan of the fasty you will pay a bit more than a bug fan.

Volksy85 ·

true...technically its a 'carport find' 😂

he wants $200...hmmm

vlad01 ·

Automatic f**k that 🙅 I am sick of converting all my cars to manual.

You guys go hacks at it, I'm out.

Edison ·

looks like $200 is a good price. Do it!! stick it in a barn and get to it later 🙂

chris7 ·

Gotta be worth a punt if you think you can save it!! besides its easy to blow $200 anyway least you will have a car to show for it!!

Bizarre ·

$200 ....... 2 good bumpers is worth that

Everything else is a bonus

Volksy85 ·

To be honest, given the rust issues i think ill pass on it.

If it was solid as a rock I would take it and tinker, but given i am chasing a kombi i dont need a tired car i dont really want tying up space in the factory. If anyone wants to know where it is, shoot me a PM.

Oh by the way - the original owners wallet is in the door pocket and includes service book, radio manual, old receipts etc...all in AS NEW condition! It even has two different fascias for the radio with different station markings.

Perhaps some karma will come my way in the form of a lead on a good bay single cab

😎

Volksy85

PM sent mate

cheers Ben

oztype3 ·

you would get more than $200 bucks back in parts if you parted out all the good stuff
i paid $900 for my squareback have only spent $500 on the engine
And is almost back on the road

Volksy85 ·

Correct...but I dont really want one of these, its just that ive stumbled across it! Happy for it to go to an enthusiast.

vlad01 ·

yeah for 200 buks I would take too, even if it is auto 😀

Not to worry I got a spare 4 sp on the shelf, shifter and shift rod. Think I may have a clutch cable too. Would be fun to drive around. I got room to drive it, after all I live in rural areas.

Major ·

Hey Volksy85 pm sent mate.

Cheers Paul

Joel ·

Funny, everyone saying $200 is hardly worth it for the whole car,

has anyone actually tried to buy an auto type3 box recently?.....🙄

Although they dont seem to take well to sitting for years, my exposure to them is limited to driving home an auto fastback a mate bought that had been sittign for a few years and it took a while of driving before it settled down and stopped changing roughly and at all the wrong times

vlad01 ·

yeah 200 is a steal👍 I would pay a grand maybe 1200 for a car like that. Fact is don't really feel like buying another car atm and auto spoils it a bit for me.

I paid 5k for my notch and i feel that was a good deal considering how much i wanted it and loved it.

Major ·

I am really interest, it looks like a great project for what I am after. Just depends on where it is located in Vic. Does anyone know?

vlad01 ·

yeah give it to major. He need a dub asap.

Major ·

Thanks Vlad01, I just need to convince my wife!😁

waveman1500 ·

That's easily worth $200 any day, even with the auto and the rust. I think if it was running and driving it would easily make $1000 or more, probably north of $2000 with rego. I'm sure someone will snap it up for that $200 price and get to work fixing it up.

Volksy85 ·

well rego would be the hard part....how would you get a RWC with the floor rusted out??

waveman1500 ·

Wouldn't be a problem if it was here in SA! 😀

But yes, getting it through one of those pesky inspections may require a bit of work.

type3disease ·

floor pan halves are $380 per side
or find a doner pan if you can that isn't stuffed also

or make up some panels from sheet - but it needs to be pressed or ribbed for strength for the seat runners etc
so once you do all that and pay someone to put them in - the pan halves start looking ok

so $200 for the car plus $380 or $760 for the pan halves if you need two, plus having them fitted
then you need to start with the other usual rust spots, sills, bottoms of the doors, parcel shellf, front air vents, tops and bottoms of front guards, inner a pillar and behind brake res, and then the bumper bracket points...

once the rust is fixed, you'll need to get it running, maype get the torque converted serviced or reco'd, a full service on the engine, front end bearings, ball joints/tie rods etc and you're starting to get somewhere, check lights, lenses, indicators, horn, interior and seatbelts, then type3 rubbers and seals aren't cheap or easy to get (except some of the aftermarket shit that doesn't fit)

certainly looks like she has potential, and in no way am I bagging the car, but depending on the rust issues etc you may well be in for quite a few bucks by the time she's roadworthy...

eitherway all type3's are cool and worth 'trying' to save

my 2c

ben

definately still good buying but don't underestimate the bigger picture

Volksy85 ·

Hi guys

Car has gone to the first in line, thanks for all the PMs and advice!

Hopefully the old girl can be given a new lease on life, and we see some progress pics!

DallanMulley ·

Type 3's are getting harder to find I reckon $200 a good price.

jhp1 ·

You'd weld it

chris7 ·

Type 3's are cool and the more people out there willing to save them the better...maybe not the cheapest to get rwc on! but its great the statisfaction you get restoring something to its former glory
...if your after cheap buy a soul-less korean shitbox mate loool😂

chris7 ·

yeh hope you get it major!..dont ask the wife just buy..🙄🤓

Major ·

Unfortunately the lucky buyer was not me....🙁

However I am optimistic that one will come my way. I have the wife on side, well she doesn't like the type 3's and wants me to get a beetle, but has said that it is up to me as long as it is in my budget😀....

Volksy85 ·

Sorry major, and cheers for the PMs!

I always have my eyes peeled for old cars and will definitely give the heads up on anything I see. Unless its a bay single cab ute, I dont really want it 😵‍💫

type3disease ·

not sure if she's quite save-able although I'd really hope she is (pretty rusty)

had a play today when she arrived home - little bit of cutters down one side - tried some new shoes

LOVE the colour 'clementine'

come take a look at her Major see what ya think - before her fate is decided....!🤘

vlad01 ·

so does it drive?

that looks too cool with the new hoops!

could it be a good 'as is' rat car? any luck with the engine?

type3disease ·

coolio

wheels to help me roll it round

play with mechanics on the weekend - see how she goes...

all the rust is fixable - just weather its worth doing...?!!?
got some pan sections coming just in case we go that way... and the rest is spot repairs
except for the heater channels... they're the harder bit...🙄

otherwise it will be used to save the notch...!😵

Volksy85 ·

sweet...theres plenty of useable bits on it

keep me posted on the plate...happy to pick it up whenever it suits

type3disease ·

vlad01 wrote:so does it drive?
no chance due to the rain on the weekend - just spent some time on the ol girl this arvo...!

she's alive - spend half an hour on her, some fluids a battery, chase a fuel leak and the lead that runs from the gearshift which had come loose
and away she went - fired in seconds after a few churns - sounds pretty damn good.... making it harder and harder to decide weather to save or strip...!

ah well job done for the day....! haven't driven her yet - maybe tomorrow...

Volksy85 ·

great news!!
cant wait to have a look.

heres a shot i took when i first found it, which highlights how tucked away she was. glad i looked a little further!

vlad01 ·

save it 👍 enough of these cars have been destroyed striping or wreaking.

🥲i didn't do it 🙄

type3disease ·

the aim would be to use it to save another as I have an auto that was involved in an engine fire...

too many projects for me to take this on as well I think...

anyone needs stuff maybe sing out or come take a look... or if anyone wants to consider a resto welcome to come see it for that too...!

type3disease ·

gonna pull the motor - rest is up for grabs -

aiming to cover the costs of the purchase + the markup between Aiden and I + tow
and try to come out with some cash to cover my time pulling it apart and help with the work needed to the other car

sing out if anyone needs anything....?

Scott G ·

GDay guys
