I have a set of vw thing torsion arms, the ball joint boots are all perished, there is still grease in there, but its grimey.

Is there any tricks to the trade of spotting dud ones when not under any physical load (ie: off the car?)

Do i just clean em up and look for play and wear patterns (like bearings?)?

Hi Chris

You should be able to feel them being loose...
although I have never felt a loose one...
I presume once they get loose they just keep getting more loose and wearing out faster...

If they feel tight, I would presume they are OK...

Fill with Lithium based MOLY grease
and put a new rubber boot on them..

REPCO TE3 16mm inner and 34mm outer size..
