Hi guys,

finally taking the plunge. Where bouts can i put it thats the easiest position, most idiot friendly 馃 and properly suited that doesn't involve pulling apart the crank case.

Its a type 3 motor, setup in an upright position for type 1 application. I have the dog house oil cooler all bolted on (had to drill for larger bore mounting studs) and fitted the adapter oil level stick.

any help as always, much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Chris.

Hi Chris

1500 engines were all type 3 types...

My original HO engine has a plate where Your dipstick goes.
I have a sensor to put in there... oil temperature..

I have an adaptor that screws into where the oil pressure switch goes... then the oil pressure switch and oil pressure sender is screwed to it...

I also have an oil temp sender in the sump as a sump plug..

these are all VDO parts..

use a type 3 oil cooler, it has the oil switch boss on that. You just need to trim the doghouse fan housing a little bit

Chris are you splitting the block on this engine?

The easy fix like graham said is fit a type3 oil cooler, only trouble doing that is withouth using lots of fittings there probably wont be enough room behind there for the sender of an oil pressure gauge aswell as the idiot light sender.

If your splitting it just tap out the bug boss below the dissy.

seeing as your using the adapter dipstick best bet for the temp sender is the releife valve plug, there was a good discussion on the samba a few weeks ago how the sump plate is not a good location as the reading is always low.

Lee, just because your bug was like that doesnt mean they all were, both the 1500 semi auto bugs my mate owned which had service records showing they were original engines didnt have filler block offs or type3 hanger mounting points

A pic of your engine with the shroud off a few months back showed its actually a type3 engine not a bug engine, that someone had just restamped the number on to avoid an adjustment of records with the RTA.

Thanks guys, I will have a ponder and look for that original type 3 cooler and have a play before doing anything.
I don't want to spit the crank case cause its suppose to be a good engine 馃檨

its an early 1600 dual port (was a twin carb) from a type 3 varient. Think like 65 model or sumfin?

Chris , i wouldn't personally use the sump plug type temp sender in a Baja as they are more than likely going to get damaged after a hit with mother earth .
So just get a standard VDO temp sender and go through the below steps to fit said sender in the Drivers rear corner of the sump at the rear of the sump

1 leave sump full of oil and or fill if empty
2 drill hole to suit tapping size of thread and with the oil in the sump this will drain through drilled hole flushing any swarf
3 tap thread in drilled hole , again letting sump oil flush out the swarf / fillings etc
4 fit temp sender
5 change engine oil

Thanks Andrew :P,

Will go for a shop and nab a VDO sensor and a tap to suit. 馃憤
I'm a little ansie when it comes to monitoring things like engine temperature, previous ricer nightmares still have visible scars lol.

Hey chris, you could always use a dipstick oil temp sender, will save having to drill into engine.
