i'm thinking of rebuilding an engine I have sitting on the floor, looking at getting the book " HOW TO REBUILD YOUR VOLKSWAGEN AIR COOLED ENGINE by HP BOOKS" any one here used it or know of its usefulness or otherwise? Keeping in mind I will need a lot of help as I am a complete novice with these things.

I have also been thinking of a rebuild and what i have found is there is nothing like watching a video on the topic a good video series is the bug me video the father sons team from the us google em they make a pretty good video thats easy to follow.

Books are good but they are never as good as seeing it on a video.

Makes you wonder how engines were ever rebuilt before video was invented...

Both are good. The Bug Me DVD is good (you can find it on Ebay) and shows you in simple terms what is involved. The book goes into a lot more detail and mentions many things that aren't in the DVD.

I'd also get a copy of a good VW manual, such as the Bentley, Haynes or Gregory. Your local library might have a copy you can borrow for nothing.

I was a novice too when I re-built my daughter's L bug engine coupla years ago, 1600 tp, stock. I used a Haynes manual and bug-me-video and for extra info you might need: Rob and Daves air-cooled pages, www.vw-resource.com
and www.aircooledtech.com. This forum is probably your best help when you get stumped with something, If you are methodical, have clean spot to do it and keep things spotless, good range of tools, especially a torque wrench, it will be straightforward. I really enjoyed doing it, even sourcing parts and trying to save a buck!
