Just chasing info on a car I'm looking at.

Engine number is S7564354

Is there a list of engine numbers somewhere that I can determine what the engine is and it's rough year?

Not sure. It's at the other end of the state. I'll try and find out.

IT SHOULD HAVE TWO LETTERS BEFORE THE NUMBERS..

LEE

Not always Lee. VW made Type 1 engines with B (1600), D (1200), E (1300), F (1300), H (1500) and L (1500) prefixes. There were also K, M, P, R, T and U prefixes for Type 3, and V, W amd Z for Type 4. Most of these weren't sold in Australia though.

There were no VW engines with just 'S'. SB is a Mk2 Golf engine, while SP, SR and SS are Wasserboxer engines.

If it IS an 'AS' number, that means 1973-79 1600cc.

Otherwise it could be re-stamping - which means it could be anything. Look underneath - does it have two pressure relief valves?

Wish I could check, but the vehicle is a long way away.

The only only thing I though is that they might have mistakenly read a 5 as an S. Is there any engine numbers with just numbers and no prefix??

There was (1200s) but not with that many numbers.

It's probably just an engineer or police issued #.
There's lots of VWs getting around now with new blocks that dont come with an engine number.

The german AS41 block I built my 1776 from is like that

This thing has been sitting in a shed for like 25 years though.

The guy said the engine was rebuilt a few thousand kms before the car was parked up, so maybe they rebuilt a later AS donk and swapped that into, vehicle is a '60-'61.

The 1200 engines with no prefix only had seven digits. I am betting it's an original '60-61 1200 block, which had no letters, and it's been rebuilt and the 'S' stamped at the beginning of the number. 'S' could have been the surname of the engine builder, or even his workshop or town, 25 years ago. It was once a common way of 'initialising' a rebuilt engine. I don't think it means anything.

It's highly unlikely nowadays to find any VWs still with their original engines - they are 40 years old or more and have had generations of previous owners fiddling with them over the years.

Thanks for the info Phil.

I'm really going to have to head down and check the car out, then I'll be able to tell for sure.
