Ragtop finished!

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/87178/ragtop-finished

Rural Baja ·

So...
I'm keen to fit a rag to one of my early beetles, is there anyone on here that has done it before?

vw54 ·

Do u mean a goldie Sunroof or a chop top

I have 2 origional Sunroofs or are you thinking of grafting a roof to a hard top ??? it has been done

vwsteve ·

i have fitted a couple of original golde clips to bugs, take plenty of time to measure, measure, measure and you will be fine, there are some original stiffening brackets at the front, make sure you keep them attached, helps with lining up also

Rural Baja ·

I was thinking of grafting a golde style ragtop to the bug. VW54 what have you got exactly?

68AutoBug ·

so long as You know that when You cut a large hole in the roof of a beetle You lose most of the strength....

helbus ·

You do not lose most of the torsional or beaming strength by fitting a sunroof. I am involved in processing numerous torsional and beaming tests on many different types of vehicles, and the difference in strength between solid roof, and sunroof vehicles is negligible. The fact is that there is a difference, however it is not a difference to worry about. It is certainly not most of the strength.

As per above i have 2 origional cars a 56 and a 65

vwsteve ·

yeh you wont lost strenth, they are tuff as nails as long as you dont chop through the cant rails

Rural Baja ·

So i have bought a Golde roof clip from Wolfsburg, waiting for it to arrive 👍

Gurujimmy ·

I saw your bug getting around lonny today, I also want to fit a ragtop to my '64 so let me know how you go..

Rural Baja ·

G'day Mate,

What sort of bug have you got?

EDIT

Yep you bought the cream bug from Hobart 🙂

OldTimer ·

Hey Rural Baja.

When you say Wolfsburg, do you mean Wolfsburg West (www.wolfsburgwest.com)? I did a search there and couldn't find Golde Roof Clip - maybe I'm doing something wrong! 🤪
Would be interested in doing something like that to my '67 Bug - a clue on price would be good 😵

When you get it don't forget to put up your step-by-step progress (including photo's of course). 🙄

Good luck, and have a great Christmas.

Old Timer

Bizarre ·

Reckon he is talking Wolfsburg Automotive Wreckers in Melbourne

OldTimer ·

Hey Bizarre, do you know if they have a web site?

Gosh I'm lazy, I could just Google them I guess? (Damn this Intraweb! 🙄)

Old Timer

[EDIT] - tried Google - nothing!

Rural Baja ·

G'day!

Yep Wolfsburg Automotive, the new rag canvas is coming from Wolfsburg West as far as i know.

It wasnt cheap, will be looking well over $1000 but i think it will be worth it. Keep an eye out for an update
in early jan!

Cheers Will

OldTimer ·

So what your saying is . . . you bought a roof section with a bloody great hole in it - 😉 (from Wolfsburg Automotive) - your going to whack it onto your ride - (read: carefully weld) - and throw on (carefully place) the new canvas from Wolfsburg West?

Looking foward to the update - should be fun.

Good luck

Rural Baja ·

Yea Cam going into herb.

Rural Baja ·

Mike ·

That's going to look awesome when its done.
All Herbies should have rag tops like the original.
I'm glad you didn't go with the Herbie Goes Bananas look 😂

t_tuffnut ·

The price of bananas would cripple you in a week!

OldTimer ·

Looking awesome, can't wait to see the finished product.
I bet it's pretty hard finding a roof section with sunroof in it these days?
But I think I'll keep my eyes open as I think I NEED to have me one of them!

Keep the pictures coming

Old Timer

Rural Baja ·

Thanks for the comments!

Yea took a little bit to find a Golde roof, just waiting for one of the front hood bows to arrive with the new replacment ragtop. I wont have any pictures until she is back from the upholsters around the start of Febuary. Hopefully ready for the MotorMillions show at Devonport on the 12th! Wish me luck!

OldTimer ·

Best of luck.

Don't forget to post piccies from the show (especially the ones where you're collecting you prize!)

If you see another Golde clip for sale, give me a yell pronto.

Old Timer

kieranweston ·

not sure if youve already got started with your rag top but there is a Britax kit currently up on eBay if youre interested, I would love it but it seems like I have the same gearbox expenses coming up as the guy whos selling it!

Rural Baja ·

For my 18th Birthday, my wonderful girlfriend Sarah bought me these:

Very excited now!

Rural Baja ·

And a straight set of towel rails to go on her aswell!

Rural Baja ·

Looking goood 😂

Mike ·

That looks awesome. It really looks like all the hassle you had was worth it in the end.
I'm lucky i checked my Herbie model before I asked a stupid question about the number plates😂

OldTimer ·

Excellent! Looks really professional, not to mention "right". Makes me want to get out the 'ol jigsaw.
I'm sure you're very pleased, as you should be.

Old Timer

Rural Baja ·

Just thought id post up a picture of her now. Its close enough to Herbie for my liking!

OldTimer ·

Not too sure Herbie had a whooping great sub-woofer in the back?
Never-the-less, Herbie is looking sweet - love the plates too!
Now you need one of those donks that MA Motorworks built especially for the last movie incarnation, then you'll be set.

Old Timer

OldTimer ·

Oh yeah, I seem to recall that when Herbie was getting ready to seriously "whoop somebody", all he did was take off his hubcaps. You tried that yet? 😁

Old Timer

Sides ·

Looks very cool... I love it !!!

👍

Rural Baja ·

thanks for all the comments! Thought id get a couple of decent pics in today. Enjoy!

handycam ·

looking good mate

OldTimer ·

I've gone weak at the knees! 😵

Mr Bubble Head ·

Sorry I'm a little late finding this thread but here's a link to my ever long on going "on again off again" project 56 rag thread. It shows me and my friend who's a professional welder cutting the roof on my oval and installing the rag roof. this was his first one he did which went all to plan.

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=46087

After he had done this he did the same for bugboy which was much easier on "the flow" whilst welding for some reason. very strange as the cars are both 56's mine is a late 56 naths is an earlier 56. maybe there was a difference in carbon in the batch's of metal used to make the panels. still both cars are very strong and as you can see in my thread in the right spot. To be honest you'd have to be an idiot to get it wrong theres so many reference points as to getting it in the right place.

Yours looks like its came together well Rural Baja how did the trimmer go fitting the headliner theres a few tricks to keep in mind as your doing it to make it operate smoothly. The outer covers seem easy as long as its a quality one and the bows are held in the right spot. Mines going to be finally trimmed in June.

benben ·

looks 100 times better in person!
you have done such a great job will, new plans sound awesome too!
There isn't very many people getting around in a daily 60's beetle!

Rural Baja ·

The motor trimmer made up his own headliner. Its only temporary until i can afford to order a proper vw one. First rag he has fitted and it turned out well 🙂

Thanks for all the positive feedback. Now the fun starts... Getting it organised for the Longford Revival Festival 🥷

sikras ·

is it practical wit the ragtop or is just for looks?

Rural Baja ·

I think its perfectly practical. It doesn't leak on me, and there is no wind noise when its shut. All is well 😁

Rural Baja ·

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand then i had to hit a massive forester kangaroo. Damage included the brand new number plate, the front right headlight and the bonnet. Ive repaired as much as possible and will post after puics tonight. I didnt get time to take pics of the aftermath! 🙄

Rural Baja ·

And she will be coming off the road in the next week to fit a new gearbox and a 1916 twin carbied engine! 👍
