Sorry but seeing these photo's only made me cry. This was my old beetle "Gladys", she was never a rat. This is how she used to look, a perfectly fine beetle without a whole hacked in the roof...
vwsteve ·
surely this cant be serious????is that rat the red beetle?
If so what an absolute waste of a car, if the new owner thinks thats cool then 🙅
MISS VDUB ·
Yeah Steve, sure is my old girl! 🙁
vwsteve ·
thats just rediculous, sorry to see that happened to your old car🤪
i assume it will hopefully get a golde sunroof in that hole but still what a waste
waveman1500 ·
I can hardly believe that it's the same car. Fake rats should be banned, they look silly anyway. Why is it missing lights and horn grills? And a seat? That's not even rat-look, that's just destroying a car.
MISS VDUB ·
I think the plans are for slats of wood to go in there ❓
vwsteve ·
oh no way!!!!!!
64vwmark ·
What a waste! I'm not a fan of fake rat lookers.🙅🙅
AzzA_teu ·
Biggest fail i've seen in a while.
Don't know why anybody would ruin a perfectly good car just for hipster points.
Yeah yeah, "personal taste" blah blah.. Fact is, a wonderful example of a terrific machine got ruined for shits and giggles. It's a shame.
I really like true rats as they have a lot of character. I just don't like to see things ruined for the sake of it though.
MISS VDUB ·
It is each to their own, and i guess it the right you give up when you sell a car. Gladys wasn't perfect, but i didnt think she was that bad to get a hole cut in the roof and be stripped? 🙁
courierboy ·
hey all love the feed back on my car, and yes it is personal choice, its called build a car for ur self and dont care wat other people say, if u dont like the car thats cool just keep ur mouth shut. and just so u no it wasn't a terric machine, fact is all panels have been replaced on the car so i could actually find some metal on her, paint hides alot AzzA_teu just cause it looks pretty from the outside doesn't mean its good. it is bullshit hard to find a true rat, so sorry if i disgusts u.
also should point out car is no where near finished, just thought i would take her out and get ridiculed by the VW community, thanks for the hate guys ill see u at the next shoow ready for ur disaproval
=(

Apology accepted.
MISS VDUB ·
Did you end up putting the original bonnet on her, or the one we gave you Kristen?
Whats the plans for the hole in the roof?
courierboy ·
bonnet is the one u gave me, picked up all new guards off a wrecked bug from the auctions, roof is getting braced after the tranny lift is done, hard wooden slats round the edging then mexican blanket cover. car is far far from being finished, just wanted to take it to a show, every one at the show seemed to like it, but guess it freaks out enthuseists, they just need to chill out and have a laugh, the car has shit loads of character Azza, and wat ever hipster points is it wasnt for that, im only 20 years old but have been going to hot rod shows since i can remember, and beleive me if i could have found a true rat and afford one on minimum wage living out of home building a car on the gold coast, i would of, the chance just didnt come up, cant wait forever

Mate it's all good, you should just ignore people like me. Strictly speaking, unlike the car show, you didn't post your car up here yourself (I assume) asking for comments, so everyone should really keep their opinions to themselves. It's hard to resist though.
Seeing the car before and after is quite a shock. Seeing the car without the before shot will still provoke polarising views as its just that sort of car.
I do think it's cool you have a plan/vision for the build, it'll feel awesome when you reach it. Hope you one day feel like posting a pic or two up when it's done so I (and others) can eat our words. Cheers

This Almost Brought a tear to my eye how could some one do this to that perfectly good 60's bug like this would be a dog effort to do on a superbug little own a 60's nice restored classic. what a waste of hours of time and effort putting into the paint for it to be all sanded back into a rat its realy sad.

lol its a rats and rods forum peeps......dont like em? go away

I don't care whether people keep their mouth shut or not. I like to hear the opinions. I am all for getting original one owner 40 plus year old cars and chopping them to pieces. I have cut up and modified heaps of original paint 1960's cars. I love it. The cleaner original they are the better they are to cut up.
wolfgang54 ·
whilst i think a rat should be 'made' from a car 'already approaching' rat status (otherwise you are trying too hard, or a try hard?), I really like the idea of wooden slat seats, very cool.

Not wood slat seats, wood slats to fit in the hole in the roof.
benjicon ·
Looks rad man. keep going. Make it your own. Ignore the haters. 🙂
68cam ·
Looks cool can't wait to see it finished
benjicon ·
Yeah good call, does anyone know if theres any progress on this car ? Has "courierboy" started a thread in members rides ?
courierboy ·
hey benjicon sorry for late reply im never on here, purists dont like me hahaha. lil update, been pretty slack but engine is out just making up brackets for tranny lift, redone all my wiring and air gear, raised thefloors 2 inches and couple of other lil things, will be getting pin stripping and sign writting in the next couple of weeks, start getting her ready for coolie rocks on
Pumba ·

What can I say

Also, to me a real rat is just a preservation of mother nature's NATURAL character
Bugged ·
hey courierboy
I was checking out cars at the Sydney Nationals yesterday and saw some cool glamours and some cool rats, I think its cool to see you get out there and show your perspective of a car. there will always be lovers and haters of what you do. I have had a 74 under a carport for 5 years its not going anywhere fast. Good on you for getting out there in the scene. look forward to seeing pics of its progress.

How's it coming along Courierboy?
I cop shit from someone or another almost everytime I take mine out, and the only mods on mine are a slightly narrowed front beam and a healthy amount of lowering at both ends.
Free lectures from some people used to annoy me especially when they're super critical of what you've chosen to do. But then I guess as long as your car puts a grin on your dial and its what you love, they don't really matter.
One of my favourite cars at the Sydney Nationals last week was a blue and white beetle on airbags - the 'look' was deliberate (paint removed etc) and it looked the absolute business. There were plenty of awesome original and restored rides there too, I can appreciate 'em all, your ride included - NICE JOB..
Keep faithful to what YOU like, and keep the pics and updates coming. 😉
fish26 ·
In the pursuit of originality and cool another car gets bastardized, it's neither rat nor rod, it's also not about purists having an opinion, it is only a SHAME.
matberry ·
Each to thier own Fish....actually, reality is a little different than some may want you to believe.
I have joined the other side .......
I believe an Ovality experience is about to begin.....bring it on all those who believe 🙂
helbus ·
I restore cars for a living, yet our 40 year old Beetle has mostly original paint that is faded, worn through to primer and nature has shown the age. People often ask why I have not restored it, and I always say that I cannot make a true worn original paint finish. Patina that is real is real.
Doctor ·
I would have cut the hole in the roof so it goes further back...
kombi_matt ·
I like the no fabric seats they look mint. How do you go on QLD roads? I assume this is not your daily driver or it would have been defected by now, especially being on the gold coast?
JER-FAB ·
7.25 AirBag-Beam, 4inch Drop Plates in there rear.
OldTimer ·
Hmmm, I'm perplexed.
I will wait until your finished before I pass judgement. I only ask that whatever you do, do it properly.
Best of luck,
Old Timer
5lam ·
Oh its done properly thats for sure!

Cool.

i thinks its cool, who cares if someone chops up a perfectly original car....to the bloke that sold it..maybe you shouldnt have if you loved it so much.... fake rats? thats kinda funny, most of em are..hell in the hotrod community alot are fiberglass..haha...anyway....
dragsters for life ·
go on shoot me as i like it, keep it up mate its your car
i drive a fattie t3 and cop some flack for that but hey i dig it and you dig your car, that is all that matters
isky ·
Good on you for having an idea and trying to achieve it. I like folk who don't want to drive around in yet another dub that looks like it's just been wheeled out of the factory. It's your car do what you want to it. Nice work... and yes fellas try and remember, this is the 'rats and rods' forum.
h ·
so it's been like a year so...
is it done n finished?
or is it getting more 'natural' patina lookin like rotting in the corner of the back yard?
or lost interest n got a commodore 😂
pics?
