I had lost hope with the earlier one dayers but bring on the test!!

siddle on a hat trick.. what a cracker!!

h ·

you beauty!! nice work siddle 😀

squizy ·

Siddle 6 for. Dougie who?

cam070 ·

But now we have to bat. Worst part is I forgot to watch it all day. Only saw the last 10 minutes

Phil74Camper ·

Don't worry about what happened in the 20 and 50 over matches v Sri Lanka. No one remembers or cares. Test cricket is the only format that matters !

Great bowling from Siddle. I remember how hard he tried against South Africa here in 2008/09 but without luck - this time things went his way, great to see. I reckon Dougie should ALSO be in the side. It's Johnson who should go back to Shield cricket for a while to learn how to bowl line and length. His bowling accuracy is shite. 15 overs, no wickets for 66 runs! Well done young Doherty, two wickets in his first Test and he'll never forget them as long as he lives.

Bell and Cook batted well but were let down by their team mates. Pieterson and Trott could have gone on with it but got out to lazy shots. The less said about Strauss and Collingwood's innings the better.

I hate the umpire referral system. Both our referrals - and the one of theirs - went with the original on-field umpire's decisions, as they should. Third Umpire Referral Decision System - or TURDS for short.

h ·

😂

h ·

hussey n haddin = gold

Phil74Camper ·

And I see Johnson got 0 runs to go with his 0 wickets. The sooner he and North are back in Shield cricket the better.

I have had the TV on all day but the radio on ABC 702. I can't stand the Channel 9 commentary team - can someone please tell Warnie that the players carrying bats are called BATSMEN - not 'batters'. It's cricket, not bloody baseball.

h ·

the wheels have fallen off the trolley :0

Phil74Camper ·

Well look on the bright side - after today it will still be nil-all !

What an incredible Test. Two triple century partnerships, AND a hat-trick. The 1st and 2nd-highest England partnerships ever in Australia. The highest 1-for innings total in Test history. The highest English innings score ever at the Gabba.

We have to regroup and look forward to Adelaide. Let's drop Johnson for Bollinger to start with. And should North get another chance - he was the only wicket taker in the second innings...

GASBNR ·

Great game. We'll be happy with a draw. Especially at the gabba lol

amazeer ·

I was at the last gabba ashes test for Day 1, then watched a little bit of cricket, a little bit more bikini on Day 2 at the big screen set up at Southbank. swore I'd go back and watch the whole 5 days there this time around but lots of things happened in between then and now. Had to settle for tv.

Aussie press is now worse than pommie press. Sunday papers are basking in glory about '10 pounded pommies' and tomorrow they will be demanding Johnson and North get dropped. I'm not so bothered about batsmen in form slumps. A batsman is out of the game when he makes a mistake, bowlers go back and start again. I think they have it much easier and so should be afforded less leniancy. We've got some decent bowling talent out there. Did you see the England v Aust A game? Peter George has been bowling really well. Smashed Tasmania over the last couple of days. Bowled well against England for Australia A, played one test against India in India and got 2/77 off 28 overs. Steve O'Keefe took 4 wickets including Cook and Peitersen plus he can hold a bat. Apart from his no balls Mark Cameron was bowling really well against England for Aust A as well. And thats leaving out Harris and Bollinger.

But then the pitch was pretty flat and crap. Could have used tennis balls on a concrete pitch for the same result.

Phil74Camper ·

Absolutely agree Chris, there are plenty of good young bowlers out there, but they question is whether they will be given a chance. There seems to be a 'clique' mentality, where it's harder to get out of the Test side than into it. Even today Ricky is saying that Johnson is 'high on enthusiasm and confidence' and his 'state of mind through the ganme was particularly good and particularly positive.' So he'll be pushing for the status quo. It might take a loss in Adelaide before something happens.

I thought the Gabba pitch was great on the first two days, a bit of green and something for both the bowlers and the batsmen, if they were good enough. Lots of wickets fell on the first day and Siddle looked like a genius, but Cook made 67 and Bell made 76 so it wasn't that bad. Likewise a few early Aussie wickets, but then as you say it became flat and lifeless. Who ever heard of a score of 1 declared for 517 ??!!

I still think the Sheffield Shield is the best domestic competition in the world, but it has been shagged around by administrators and sponsors over the last 10-15 years. They need to organise the summer properly so that incumbent Test players can play for their state on a regular basis - like they did for the rounds on 17-20 Nov. Nothing better for young players than to play with and against Test players. Of course they'd need to reduce the number of meaningless 20 and 50 over matches - and money comes first.

Bill O'Reilly was the best newspaper columnist I ever read - no nonsense or fluff, no sensationalism, no toeing the team line, he called it as he saw it. Greatly missed. I see that Robert 'Crash' Craddock has done a straight pinch of Kerry O'Keeffe's famous line in his Tele report today - "more nicks than a Greek cafe." Today's writers are both good and original - but the parts that are good are not original, and the parts that are original are not good.

bring on Friday and the weekend
hopefully the wheels are attached n ready to roll
and the have been practicing catching the red ball

h ·

beware of wheels flying thru the air.. oh dear

waveman1500 ·

I spent all day yesterday at Adelaide oval watching England notch up about 280 runs. Some very average bowling and generally not all that much to get excited about, but I still had a good day. Bring on the next test, because I think this one is lost!

C'MON AUSSIES!!!!

5/69 wtf oh dear

Phil74Camper ·

Great fightback by Hussey and Haddin (again), plus some excellent batting from Johnson of all people. We ended up with 100 or so more runs than we really deserved. We'll know by the end of today whether there is any more fight left in our current side or if we say goodbye to the Ashes for another 2 years.

Four years ago in Perth, Australia also batted first and was all out for 244. We then bowled England out for 215 and went on to win by 206 runs. So the scenario is not impossible - just pretty bloody close to it at the moment.

If we lose I think they'll dump Punter - he's past it. But who do we replace him with? Not Clarke, he needs to go back to Shield cricket. Katich and Hussey are chances but only for a season or so. Watson? Cameron White? David Hussey?

They need to sack Hilditch as head selector and put in a full-time panel. At the moment ALL the selectors are batsmen - no bowlers at all. How dumb is that?

The less said about Phil Hughes' dreadful batting the better. He needs at least another two seasons in Shield and should never open again.

h ·

hussey or haddin maybe should get the nod..
they seem to be the credible saviour for the country since this dismal episode began

Good to see him grab a bag full.
But after one good performance, the reporters are calling him Magic Johnson. I hope he can continue to live up to that name!

amazeer ·

find me a big hunk of wood before I say what I'm thinking.

amazeer ·

"cant lose from here surely"

oh yeah, thats what we needed. Hopefully a hard fought draw or aussie win in Melbourne to spice up my day 1 ticket for Sydney.

Good to see the curators finally came up with a 40 wicket pitch!!!

Feel sorry for Peter Roebuck in tomorrows papers. He's had to go from "sack all english players and selectors" to "sack all aussie players and selectors" and now he is going to have to go back to the former again. Must be hard to be him.

bloody poms. Outplayed and outclassed us in every facet. We're a bit of a 3 man show at the moment. Take out Hussey Haddin and Siddle and we're very second rate.

amazeer ·

Hopefully the aussies bat first in Sydney. At least then I will see some action.

ponting should bite his pride and drop kick himself, did i say that, drop himself and bring in some young blood, he's lost it, sore loser at that too.

cam070 ·

I have to say I've lost a faith in pointing, but there are plenty who aren't performing. If Clarke is the replacement, he's not exactly performing either. So where does that leave us?

Bizarre ·

they had a chance to bring new blood in a year or so ago and didnt take it 🙁

h ·

nows the time for a shake up obviously
bring in hauritz like he should of been from the start
n haddin for capt gets my vote

Phil74Camper ·

When companies are going bad, you don't sack the mail boy and expect things to improve. You have to start at the top.

1. The ACB - who is James Sutherland and how many Tests has he played? None. Get rid of him and replace him with a tough, experienced former cricketer who knows what is required - Allan Border or Steve Waugh for example.

2. The ACB needs to rethink their summer schedule. Playing more meaningless 50-over and 20/20 matches is not the way forward. The English had longer to get ready for this series than we did - we were busy playing 5 meaningless 50-over matches in India. The season needs to be restructured around the Sheffield Shield, so that current Test players can regularly play for their state. How else can young players learn and make the next step up? Then Test selection can follow based on form, not reputation.

3. The selection panel needs a broom through it. Sack Hilditch - he was an awful opening bat in the 1970s and an even worse selector now. I am not sure about Greg Chappell either - I don't trust him - but he brings some experience at least. The panel needs to be FULL TIME and comprised equally of bowlers and batsmen. At the moment they are all batsmen since Big Merv was sacked. ALL selectors should be required to attend Sheffield Shield matches.

4. Sack the 'coach' Tim Nielsen, an ordinary Sth Aust Shield player who never played a Test, so what can he possibly teach Test players? Sack him, and delete the 'national coach' position entirely. As Warne once said, the only coach the team needs is the diesel-engined one that takes them to the ground. By the time you play for Australia, you should KNOW how to bat, and how to bowl. If you are having troubles, go back to Shield cricket and work it out yourself. Test cricket is not the place to learn the basics. Nor are coaches required for 'strategy' or 'planning' as the match progresses - that's the captain's job. Australia never had a coach at all for 109 years until Simmo was appointed in 1986 during the South African rebel crisis. Armstrong, Woodfull, Bradman, Hassett, Benaud, Simpson, Lawry and Chappell never needed a 'coach' for their team and we don't need one now.

5. There needs to be a continual, gradual replacement of champion players for upcoming youngsters. At the moment we keep the old blokes on for years after their best, mollycoddling them and trying to send them off on a 'high'. Then suddenly BANG, three or four retire at once and we are in crisis for a few years. It happened in the early '50s (Bradman, Lindwall, Miller, Brown, Morris); it happened in the early '80s (Chappell, Lillee, Marsh) and it's happening now. Hayden and Langer were allowed to play two more years longer than they should have, hence our opening troubles now. We should expect to blood at least two or three new Test players each year. Keeping an unchanged side for three or four years, as we did up until 2008, is a recipe for long-term disaster.

6. I was going to say that it's time for Ricky to take his place in the Channel 9 commentary box alongside his former captains, but on second thoughts, no. His 100mph speech is too annoying, and anyone who describes Test matches as 'games' or batsmen as 'batters' should stay away and watch baseball instead. Plus does Ricky know anything about field placements?

Good luck to the Poms, too good for us this time. Looking forward to Sydney and hope to get there on one of the days.

amazeer ·

it may have been shortened, but at least we lasted the whole day. obvious lapses in concentration are killing us. why? Seems we learnt how to leave balls alone that shouldnt be hit, but appears that because english can bowl 6 concecutive balls in the right spot we get bored out?

I reckon there was more heaps more pom supporters there than aussies. Clarke got a massive boo when he walked out in Pontings absense. They appear to have their next anti-hero.

Good to see we offered a little resistance, but Clarke failed yet again. If he wasn't made captain, his place would have to have been in some doubt as well.

h ·

oh dear 6/171
oh dear hussy 🙁

Gary L ·

New members of the Australian test team please Lara Bingle , Lee Furlong, & Liz Hurley they can't bat or bowl like the rest of our team but at least they look good!

Phil74Camper ·

But they do have better bouncers too, Gary...

England have been better than us in every facet of the game - batting, bowling, fielding, captaincy - as well as the intangibles like planning, preparation, team harmony. Well done lads, you deserved to win - but what a win. Biggest England team total ever in Australia; most runs in an Ashes series ever, biggest run/wicket differential ever, first time we've ever lost more than one match by an innings - and we're going to lose THREE of them that way.

We are due for a major review, a major cleanout and a major restructure. But it won't happen because everyone is cosy and this time next week we'll be playing pyjama cricket and all will be forgotten - especially if we win one or two. I predict it will take a bombing out of the World Cup in a month or two before heads will roll.

They need to be big implements. And we need some rockets as well!

amazeer ·

well, I feel I was so hard done by at the SCG I'm off to homebush to watch T20 NSW v WA. That way I have a 22 chances of seeing an Australian hit a ball! Wish me luck.

And now my sms inbox is getting flooded with aussie cricket jokes from gloating poms. Will be interesting to see them go up against their next opponents to find out if they are really that good or we are just too bad for words.

Phil74Camper ·

I'll be at the Twenty20 as well Chris - might bump into you for a beer.

We need to worry about how WE will go against our next Test opponents - against Sri Lanka IN Sri Lanka in August. Then after that we play South Africa, and then India next summer. Ouch - some more pain coming up if no changes are made.

Andrew Hilditch says that all is OK, the selectors (including himself) did a 'really good job' and we were just outplayed. Yeah, three innings defeats in four tests is 'outplayed' all right. What an arrogant, ignorant and self-serving prick. He was a selfish, inflexible and very ordinary opening batsman in the 1970s and nothing has changed. He was also famous for being given out Handled The Ball in 1978 - the only balls he handles now are the ones in his trousers.

Mr Bubble Head ·

😂😵‍💫🥲

amazeer ·

I didnt end up going. I was running at homebush in the morning so got an awesome parking spot in P1. In pole position to get out the door at the end if the cricket. But didnt fancy waiting around all day only to find that it had been rained out so left at about 11:30. Maybe I'll go on the 29th.

Hopefully aussies may start to salvage a little tomorrow.

I'm still getting hammered with pommie sms and emails. *sigh*
