Closing date for entries is this Friday 11th February. This closing date also includes numbers for catering on the Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast. It's also the last chance to register for the dune buggy day on the Friday.
Thanks again to David Brown, Trades Parts Manager for Volkswagen Genuine Parts, for supplying some neat 2011 Volkswagen merchandise for the drivers packs. These will be distributed on Friday and on Saturday morning to drivers, along with gate passes, etc.
Yes, the Tappet Cover Racing is definitely a part of the Saturday night entertainment, and I've already been privy to a few new creations. Racing starts approx 9pm in the SouthCoast clubrooms.
This is the last update, as I will now be busy with paperwork and the buggy, but please feel free to email me with any questions about the weekend.
we will be at portland again as we are every year 😁

You won't be the only one.
Hopefully my mk1 will last long enough for this event.
Got a few test & tunes coming up with the new setup.
Testing the new clutch, the 2-Step again & also my new in-car camera.
2nd gear 2-Step launch/powerskid pedaling it down the road 60+m
I did try it in 3rd, but it needs a much bigger rpm pill to help build boost.
2nd gear roll on
Power run. (I won't post the speed, but anyone who knows there way around a Mk1 speedo will know how fast it wraps around the speedo if you look closely enough!)

Better keep it in one piece 🙅
You haven't seen what we have done with our 8v

hopefully we will get our new engine together before Portland otherwise we will have to run the old one which is a little 2nd hand but its doing consistent 13.2 1/4 mile passes hahaha

I can only imagine what you do with it.
You have to remember, mine is no trailer queened, weekend warrior. Its a full weighted street car covering 500+km week for the daily commute, & it doesn't get an easy time doing it either. Even with a locked diff too!!!!
Its still running roughly 20psi too, so there is no "race tune" or "street tune".
Hence the "hopefully it will last" comment
Those video's are basically how I drive it. Hard!!!!.
For racing, I only remove the spare, jack & fit a stickier set of front street tyres. So its still a full weighted car.
Its best MPH so far in full street trim has been 101.95mph, so its on par with your drag mk1. Although my 60ft's are still a very lazy 2.2
But I do trailer it to events now, cause everytime I've raced a VW, its broken & I've had to hitch a ride home. Fragile POS'!!!! haha
Funny though, never had a drama racing Aussie cars!!!!
Just last weekend, I drove my ute on a 5hr round trip, raced it, raced it hard & had no dramas.
Should be a good weekend.

3/4" actually!
The mind boggles!!! like to see the size of the recess in the lifters, do you have a valve spring compressor big enough? your valve seats are going to cop a pounding.!! I have built some pretty big & tuff 8.1 litre bigblock chev engines and your valve springs absolutely dwarf any motor I have ever put together! Somewhere in my workshop, I have an intake valve out of a ship, the valve stem is 18 inches long & your spring looks like it would suit it, are you sure your not having us on????🤪 if this is for real, I just gotta see a pic of the assembled head, thats going to be one sick puppy!! cheers Frank

WPVW prep for Portland a little slow due to late arrival of parts ordered . Ben Fords' supercharged bug is repaired and will be ready to run at Portland with new 930 Porsche CV conversion .
The turbo oval has had the turbo serviced , fuel system flushed and methanol fuel added . The dyno session was not as successful as I had hoped with the engine erupting when coming on boost , climbing the rollers and then slipping the clutch . I will have to replace the clutch tuesday night .
The broken transmission from the WPVW turbo vee will be removed today and a new crownwheel and pinion fitted tomorrow .
see you all at Portland , have a safe trip ........

How about a picture Shane , should make a great addition to our drag car numbers !

Shane did have his new Drag buggy out at Sydney. He went out to get a feel for the car and see how it was going to behave. He was well prepared to take it easy and get acquainted as there are always things to look at when a new car & driver is making its debut. He should be making plenty of noise at Portland with the supercharged Buggy!
I think for a signwriter he has done a damn good job building his first Tube Chassis car.
A big thanks to everybody involved in the 3 year build. There is a long list of people and they all know who i'm referring too, your assistance, guidance and friendship are invaluable to both of us!

My son Rhys & myself got there 9.30am friday morning, set up the tent & BBQ , then raced off to the sand dunes for the dune buggy action. checked out some wild and wonderful buggies & also an ugly thing that had an engine in the front, but each to their own, the rains came as we were about to leave the dunes and a few were concerned about the steep hill one had to drive down to access the dunes, now to get back up it, it was now very slippery !!! the wolsburg T3 mobile with beach buggy on trailer was doing a nice waltz up the hill and only just slithered over the peek. a couple of klms up the road it died ( ran out of petrol)!! lucky I had packed my steel tow cable in the trusty chev, so hitched up the whole lot and towed it the 15 odd klms back to Portland & parked him right in front of a petrol bowser, I must say, we got some strange looks!! Friday night we were under chocos annexe sharing a few laughs and I must say, Doc is mad! he comes up with some bloody funny shit!! ask the guy about a battery drill. YOU WILL BE GOB SMACKED !!! The rain really set in and our old tent was not enjoying it, I raced into town & bought a tarp and slung that over the tent, about 10pm my son tells me that most of the bedding is awash. So in the pissing rain we pulled the whole lot apart, chucked it back in the chev and headed back to Geelong. Our first stop was the local car wash in Portland where we got a bit of shelter from the rain and got out of our drenched clothing and put some nice dry warm clothing. The wipers were going full blast for the whole 3 + hour trip home, the water wasnt running off the road and we spent most of the time aqua planing!! it was like driving with your hand brake partially on. Got up sat morning and the wind is so strong here in Geelong it would blow a dog off its leash!! hope it gets better for all those that have stuck it out and I wish them all the best and a safe trip back home. Shit they are a funny lot !!!!!!!!! cheers Frank

mixed results for team WPVW this year at Portland . The trip down to Portland was pleasant and un-eventful with the first night stay at Benalla , then on to our destination the second day .
Weather was shitty friday afternoon and saturday morning but cleared enough for racing in the afternoon .
The WPVW turbo oval made only 2 passes on 2 cylinders and spent the rest of saturday afternoon and sunday morning trying to resolve the problem without success . Problem believed to be a malfunction in the microtec ecu after I connected a staging device on wednesday night .
Chris Bolton in the WPVW turbo vee made his first and only pass of the weekend in 7.3@101.35mph . When Chris came out for his second run the vee leaked oil on the start area , so we pushed it back to the pits and drained the engine oil as it was over-full as it had a lot of fuel in it . We purchased new oil for the engine and started the engine to warm it up and it just locked-up . It stayed on the trailer for the rest of the weekend . Congratulations to Chris on 2nd fastest mph for the weekend....and on his very untidy shakedown pass !!
BEN FORD DESPARATELY NEEDS WHEELIE BARS
Ben Ford in the WPVW supercharged bug was just awesome . 8 passes for the weekend with a best et of 7.59 @ 96mph and never leaked a drop of oil or a puff of smoke !!
We have some great in-car footage of Ben with wheels-up action in that animal that he drives , a huge congratulations to him for not only getting his bug prepared for this event , but also for a very successful drive at Portland 2011.
Ben had a moment on his 7th pass when he launched from the start line with the front wheels high in the air , got off the throttle and the bug came down hard , got back on the noise pedal and the front end leaps into the air once again , gets it all tidy and passes in 7.6 & 92mph . He returns to the pits to find the left shock tower broken off the new alloy beam .
TEAM WPVW are staying in Geelong tonight before heading back to Wollongong tomorrow.....
congratulations to all competitors on a great meeting and wishing everyone a safe trip back home.......

Quick 8 winner was Shrapnel , with Junka runner-up
specials winner was Barry in the ascort with a buggy runner-up
watercooled winner was a lady ( sorry dont know her name) with a white mk1 golf runner-up
quickest et & mph for the weekend was Mike Waldron in the LMS supercharged drag bug 6.8 & 103mph

It has an old 6volt 1200 syncro gear box.
Second hand clutch
54 standard gear stick
The gear box shaft coupling holes didn't line up with different gear box it took a few goes to get it to work. Screwed the coupling grub screw in tight on the shaft as didn't match up with hole in the shaft.
runs the 54 standard brakes and suspension with drop spindles and some second hand managles
The engine is an old 1916 with twin webbers that we got out of an old beach buggy 5 years ago history unknown
All we did was cleaned carbs, checked tappets & points and changed the oil.
I have taken that engine to 5 drag racing events and still going strong.
really low budget racing for us

The Gringos entered four Beetles this year (with lots of hanger ons) Andrew had a great weekend with a 7.6 pass straight off the trailer on Sat. on Sunday he got down to 7.4 blowing his dial in but who cares. Mine was running 8 dead all weekend but I broke first gear in the third round (same as I did at Warwick) I might post a thread on this to see if any of the elders can give me some advice). Steve in Beetle Juice had carby troubles on Sat. but we fixed it Sat. night and he ran in the mid nines all Sunday. Our newest Gringo Boris "the Russian" Senic entered his camo 1500 Beetle but was proberbly a little under prepaired with fuel pump and clutch problems but he'll be back.

That car is was my daily driver up until i brought a 500+hp ute to replace it just before xmas.
But it does still get alot of street use & does do several trips to melb on/off during the week.
Its weird, but I was put on the spot & was speechless during the presentations which is rare.
I know I got off on the wrong foot with Craig Huges, but I've really got to thank him for putting up with me!!!
But in all seriousness, we all wouldn't have had such a great event without him & his support.
This event has also changed my mind on the whole VW drag racing scene & I reckon I maybe abit more involved in the racing side of VW's in the future. Especially with some further upgrades planned for the old white rusty golf.
Also got to thank Southcoast raceway & all its volunteers who put on the show & also for allowing the VW's to race & some "oiling down" which most aircoolers do at times! haha
I was amped all weekend & had a blast. Even the red light in the final didn't upset me either! Cause the car had made 17-18 pass' throughout the weekend, PB'd straight away over the old setup & wound up running some really good times for a true watercooled street car!
Thanks again too all involved.
Cheers
Tim.

dangerous wrote:What times and speeds did you run Tim?
Best ET for the weekend was
8.153@86.04mph, 1.85 60ft
Best MPH was 88mph
All in full street trim & weight. Only adjustments made throughout the weekend were playing with tyre pressures & front suspension rebound, rear suspension compression & rear height.
Tune remained untouched.
But after the 8.15 pass, I was out voted by my mates to remove all the seats etc. to chase down the $500 put up for the first FWD into the 7's by Seb & Courtney of Euro-Automotive.
But the car went slower!!! Go figure! haha
Car was running consistant 8.4 ET's, 1.9-2.0 60fts & 86-87mph.
Courtney was the eventual watercooled winner.
The car was also a stock Mk3 2L Auto Golf! Not the VR6 it was being called all weekend too!!!!

Pete , it was under my instruction that Ben did all his burnouts in 1st gear when at Portland . The clutch assembly didnt need any excessive load placed on it (especially so far from home) and this allowed Ben the 8 passes he had on the weekend without clutch or transmission failure .
The transmission I built for him is a 002 bus unit 4.86 ring & pinion with 2.5 ratio 1st gear & 28" tyres (new very soft Hoosiers) . Along with this a solid diff centre , chromemoly axles & 930 turbo Porsche CV joints with chromemoly race cages .
I consider this set-up to be quite strong and with the large 1st gear ( almost the size of a standard 2nd gear ) on the mainshaft very capable of withstanding the small loads of a burnout from the water-trap .
After Ben spends a little more time in the car , he can then practice 2nd gear burnouts and get the tyres a little hotter .... but only after wheelie bars are fitted.

Good to see you guys racing, and flying the flag for the victorians.
Portland IS one of the best tracks around,
so fingers crossed that it will still hold a VW event next year.
Your best option would be to spring for a better quality first gear(Albins or FTC),
**but first you must make sure your clutch is not over rated.**
For an 8.0 car that is not too heavy,
I would say you could get away with a stage 1 and 4 puck,
or stage 2 and organic disc.
If you need to keep using the VW gears,
then make sure that you use the lates L-bug first and main shaft,
use 40hp needle bearings
and minimise end float to the lowest factory spec, and add oil holes to the hub to improve the oil flow.

Heres a couple of vids I quickly put together of my mate driving my car "Preeny" & myself "Timmy"
Some pics from the weekend.
There are plenty more of all of the cars at Portland incl. the Super Street & Super Sedan cars, but can't really be stuffed uploading 200+ pics sorry
LHR spring perch decided to pick something up in the threads & lock up severely!!! not good, so the last resort was to pull out the biggest multi-grips I had in my toolbox!
Sometimes you just have to get it done, no matter what happens. We'd already set the other side up, so I had to even up the ride height!

Decided to grab some valve springs off the shelf this morning to compare vw to bigblock chev springs, then looked at your pic of your monster springs & collet. then realised that I got excited at your pic that is magnified which made me originaly think that the valve springs you were going to use were the biggest springs I had ever seen in any engine. hence my previous replys, It is a great close up pic . Just one question in regards to the pushrods you are machining up, is there going to be enough room in the pushrod tubes for the oil to return back to the crankcase quick enough cheers and hope you every success with this beast of a motor you are building, Frank
dangerous wrote:Sorry to say I wont be there this year.
It is a great week end and atmosphere.
There was a remote chance i would have had my valves by now,(springs arrived today),
but valves wont leave the USA till Friday.
With no dyno time, $, or testing it looks like only Warwick this year.

Has anyone got some video footage of the aircooled catagories? We didn't get a chance to take any footage over the weekend and I'm keen to see how Shrapnel was launching?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks again to Craig for holding such a great event and also to the South Coast Raceway for fantastic track preparation, what a weekend!

Thanks Rose just caught a glimpse in one of your videos!
We had a fantastic weekend; my wife Rachel ran her Birch Green 66 Beetle for the first time after 6 years in the shed. She clocked her fastest time ever of 10.3 with a little 1776. She drove it from Adelaide, raced and drove home, we still can't wipe the smile off her face! Now to get the 2386 in there from Shrapnel and give Rose a run for her money!
Shrapnel ran faultlessly. My slowest time was 7.27 @ 79.65 MPH, hard on the brakes against Ben Ford in the supercharged Beetle. Quickest time was 7.064 @ 97.19 against Andrew Ermel (gringo 1). Reaction against Ermel in the last race before the final was .079. In the final I ran against Brad Young in the Junka with a .001 reaction and a 7.128 at 95.14MPH. Luck was certainly on my side in these last two races. We had a ball!!

I just put up another one with more runs of all types enjoy
we need more girls racing its heaps of fun
off to Gunnedah in 3 weeks time for some more drag racing on the 1/8 mile

Congratulations David,
You really have Shrapnel hauling arse now!
Can you share some specs of the current drive train,
and what you have done with the suspension?
When the car was first featured in VW Power magazine(was that the 80's?!),
it had no wheely bars and a weird front suspension.
Based on the 7.0 and 97mph, you must have dipped into the 1.4's(or close) with the sixty?

From memory Tommie "the gun" from the Coabra division in the silver 81 GTI 20v ran 8.8 at approx low 80's mph.
The only run we had against each other was in eliminations which we dialed in.
I remember the run well, cause we we're all joking around at the track & at the hollday cabin/pub& he dialed in a 8.80 with a 8.89 which was awesome, as he didn't play around with anything on his car apart from front tyre pressures.
I dialed in a 8.25 & passed him with a 8.26. Can't remember the mph's sorry.
but I know we both ran very close to our dial in's & I had to chase him down.
That was only run we had against each other & it was also one of the best runs we both had.
Apart from my 2nd run on the Sunday of a 8.15@86mph

Dave,
Shrapnel was featured in the very first issue of Australian VW Power back in December 1988. The car was originally built by Mark Callus and Henry and was painted white running a 2110. At the time the best quarter run was a 12.4 @ 100MPH. The front end was a wishbone set up and a rack and pinion from a Honda. Nowdays there really is little left of the original except for the body and front fiberglass flip. We've cut and raised the rear torsion housing and forks and uprated the torsion bars. The original aluminium hoop has been raplaced with a full roll cage. The front end is now a narrowed aluminium beam from JT with oval shocks modified to give "no" resistance on lift. The rear of the car now has dual adjustable shocks.
Engine now is a 2386 running an fk89, comp elim heads 48x37.5 titanium, dry sump set up, pauter 1.5 roller rockers and Jaycee 51.5 webers. I've run this motor for a couple of years now in my 69 Beetle with injection both at Portland and Warwick previously. Each event it has run the cam flat so I'm stoked that it has finally survived!!
This year Shrapnel's best 60 foot was against Ben Ford with a 1.516. On this run I was hard on the brakes so as not to break out with a time of 7.270&79MPH (the 330was 4.544). Dave do you think this could have been a 6? In hindsight I think I should have risked the break out just to see what it could do, I could feel it was a good run!
It was great also to finally meet Mark Callus at Portland. With a bit of luck he'll dig up some info for the archives on Shrapnel!

It was great to watch Schrapnel in action. I too wanted to see what time you were capable of achieving. It sure is quick. When do you think your next outing will be?

I had a look through my notes.
For my normally aspirated runs in the high sixes,
all had a 330 time of around 4.45 to 4.47.
Willowbank began using 330 ft timers back in 1995
and the 1775cc blown engine, it was about a tenth quicker to the 330 for high sixes,
but 'generally' slower sixties.
But I never left at 7500 with those engines either!
But your mph is enough to see 120 on the 1/4,
which, with a little more work in the sixty should be enough to get you in the sixes.(and possibly 11.0's or tens on the 1/4).
Pete's car is a little closer to your combo,(with Rod's 2387cc engine) than my wierd thing🙁heavy and big motor high rpm and bus box),
so his data may be more representative.
davidoconnor ·
Thanks for the information Dave!
I might head over to Heathcote in the next few months to test over the quarter. The Wallace racing calculator says 11.1's based on most best time inputs, I guess I'll find out soon enough!
VWMA Editor ·
Congratulations to all the competitors, crew and spectators at VW Portland this year. Your commitment to VW drag racing and the VW scene in general is what keeps the dream alive. Thanks also to the club members and volunteers of SouthCoast Raceway, and the local businesses Ace Sheet Metal and Portland Laser Cutting for the excellent trophies.
Although the Portland weather did its best to try and spoil proceedings, it was to no avail, and two days of excellent racing ensued. The final of the Top VW Shootout was a perfect 7 second heads up affair with David O'Connor taking the win from Brad Young.
Mick Motors again made this weekend possible, and was well supported by Westside Mufflers, Rod Penrose Racing, Volkswagen Genuine Parts, Ace Oils, Ratmuller Racing and three of Australia's most active and progressive VW clubs - Club VeeDub Sydney, The Volkswagen Club of Victoria and the VolksEnthusiasts Club of SA. The Oz VW scene owes much to these businesses and clubs, whom without such weekends would not happen.
Round 2 of the VWMA series is VW Warwick on October 1st-2nd. Don't miss any of the action. See you on the track.

Ben Ford has a little trouble as the WPVW supercharged bug leaves the line with wheels up . Ben was very nervous about his bug going straight after a recent incident at Warwick QLD and got off the throttle too quick , but got it all together to win the pass .

Dave looking foward to seeing you race at Heathcote. Its a good track, but not as sticky as Portland, a little bumpy thru the trap but has pleanty of run off and is easy on the brakes.
I will be away on holiday in the US till after the Easter but will be ready to race when I get back. I will let Mike know when when I get back so we can organise a few local VW racers to get over there.
I now need to give my oval a run over 1/4 mile with new setup. It should make high 11's now.
Steve and I will be upgarading Beetle Juice this year with a new motor now that the setup is good with the body and pan. It will be getting a 2300 methanol motor, Kombi box and MSE shifter. Steve has been working on getting the data logger in the car but ran out of time just before Portland. He is keen to get some runs in my Ghost on race fuel before he taclkles the new set up with methanol in Beetle Juice.
Cheers

Welcome to the forum Andrew!
Can you share some specs on your car?
like what mods you have done to the engine and trans?
(might like to start a new topic including the rest of the specs on the Gringos team?)
davidoconnor ·
Andrew,
Great to hear from you. I look forward to seeing the upgrades to the oval in the near future. It's already one tough package now, what are the plans for the old motor then?
Grey Ghost ·
The Grey ghost runs a 2338cc with CB Buuble top case and CB crank (busted the 20 year old scat crank at wawrick last year) 94mm Wiseco pistons 12.5compression ratio. Has 044 heads 44/37.5 valves with my own porting which took about three weeks on and of to do. Pauter 1.3 rockers FK98 cam and 51.5 Jaycee carbs. I have spent a lot of time on the engine setup especialy with the machining, head porting and tolerances. Its been a setup that I heve been playing with for just on two years. Box is a 1500 swing axel that I built myself with short Swayaway axles and Jaycee spool. It runs a Jamar front beam with Jamar discs barkes all round. The trany still runs standard gear ratios of which I will upgarade latter this year pending finances (hope to buy some Albins gears when I work out what ratios, maybee someone can suggest?) . The car is a 56 oval and is still all steel and will most likely remain that way. I have run a 12.4 pass with the old motor setup at Heahtcote but are looking to run its first 11 sec in a few months when I get back from the USA. Most importantly my dyno tune done By Darren Gill (Gilly) at Geelong carburetors who is a wizard with the race engine setups. We have spent some very valuble hours on the dyno making sure the engine is right throughout the rev range.
Old motor will go in the Manxter that I am building at the moment (de-tuned of course) and will be a fun vehicle to drive I hope.
Cheers
Andrew Ermel
