Early days yet for this build, but things are a little quiet on the forum lately so thought you guys may want to see some jobs we have going on at the MBMS workshop.
This one will keep the strut lovers happy.
The brief.....street / circuit car.....fast, to compete at club level (with a bit of sibling rivalary going on.....his brother runs 61/2's at Lakeside in a Nissan and with development we need to beat him!!), big type 1 engine with Porsche cooling and dry sump, type 1 trans with Quaife ready to go, 944 turbo ally. rear arms and brakes, adjustable front end with Porsche brakes, composite panels and 6 point or better cage for saftey and chassis ridgedity.
Below is some insperation for the build courtesy of Remmel
So far the extremely clean primary car has been stripped and seam sealers removed for inspection and the start of rust repairs.

All sounds really good there Matt.
Hope your client has the $ and patience to pull it off.
Keep us informed.
Cheers Col

Front and rear aprons have been removed and replacements sourced, front will be a/c version for cooler mounting options.
The body will be coming off the pan, but the dash rust had to be done prior to removal, as I wanted it refitted while the shell is rigid.
No 2 car donated a dash with less rust in the air plenum chamber
Hows the condition of this air box ????? This is from the donor car
Rust repairs have started on the removed dash
Repaired dash ready for installation

Thanks Colin, yeah, a long way to go, that's for sure.

Thanks for posting Matt, I hope you keep posting as the build progresses. The inspiration photo up the top also features in my screen saver. We need more GL Beetles in Au

Can you share a tip on how you removed the tar mats frojm the interior so cleanly? My experience leaves a sticky gooey mess.
mactaylor ·
good stuff matt looks like a good start. if you work out a nice way to adjust rear camber am keen to find out?
cnfabo ·
i love look when they take that plastic dash off....cant wait to see the progress...what size donk,do tell....

This was certainly the easiest I have done 😉, the only tips are cold, sharp chisel and elbow grease. We were very lucky on this one, the car is obviously low mileage and garaged for most of its life. Pan 1/2's are nackered, the lh sill has a small area to repair and the drip rail above the door as photodraphed is all the rust in it. Oh, and what was in the dash air box. C pillars are factory fresh !! Zero prior accident damage too. 👍
Bizarre ·
great stuff
Is this a rack & pinion??
The air box is certainly a "d'oh!" from VW
The drain point is not the lowest point!
VERY clean otherwise
Going to watch with great interest
matberry ·
Thanks for the comments guy's
Engine still being planned, will be Al case, 2.3 - 2.4 n/a carbs type 1. Sent email to JPM re heads but after weeks, no reply....any suggestions.
Both cars (primary and donor) are rack and pinion 👍
Hopefully I can keep the updates coming....have to get you guys inspired somehow.......
Here's another dreamer pic

Maybe he didn't get your email, I'd try again and maybe give him a call.

Hi
I cant wait to see this take shape, love strut GLs.
Are you going to weld up the grills in the front scuttle area, you could then just run a hose from the plenum box to outside to get fresh air.
Steve

Thanks Steve, I am very open to suggestions, but my plan at present was to use the air system primarily as the screen defrost. Using the stock outlet and ducting up to the screen, but an electric heater fan in the air box to do the work via a switch on the dash. As for cabin cooling, I thought a pair of eye-ball vents or ducts each side of the dash and rely on the natural air flow from those grills, the fan could also be used.....and if that's not enough, a/c or cool suit...🤪🤪🙅
grogy ·
rod penrose has 2800 type 4, that would be nice in acircuit bug. look forward to the updates
BiX ·
Looking very good.
you don't want to do a second one at the same time, I am doing a very similar update to my super....

Very interesting Grogy, but this one will be type 1 powered, esp since gearbox and ratios are already decided, purchased and trans built. 🤘

hellbugged wrote:👍 cool, throw up lots of pics.......give the forum something new to sus out, not enough of it lately
Mmmm sounds like Daimo is bored and a few updates are in order.
Brad's L bug has taken a turn so to speak. We completed the rust in the dash and some in the rh bonnet seal strip area as per these pics
matberry ·
We then did some tidying up around the aprons
And needed to prime where the clean up prep had started
This was to stop any rust as now we needed to buy some goodies.......
we found a car on good ol Aussieveedubbers that was a price too good to be true, and so we organised h for a little personal delivery service, the kind he does soooo well
matberry ·
So we got some alloy rear arms and brakes from a 968
They fit easily with a few modded bit n pieces
no spring plates in this pic, they have since been fabricated
Front end has been stripped for upgrades, we are currently waiting on supply of some of the front end and new brake parts.
Should come up all right, here is the interior as purchased 👍
mactaylor ·
looks good, have fun!

hellbugged ·

We ended up speaking to Johannes, he's very good as people have said, just I'm sure he is extremely busy. A shipment of JPM products is being finalised, somethings I wanted Johannes was already finishing the prototype stage and will be in production soon. So as usual, it pays to be patient.

Matt white car isn't the old "dak to the future" car is it?? Used to read about it all the time years ago but never did see anything published about whether or not it was ever finished and raced?
Sides ·
Different car for sure Brennden... pretty sure that Dak To The Future now part of the WPVW stable...
btw - where and when you think we're likely to see this racer make it's debut Matt ???
matberry ·

No Brenndan, white car is the old Oz VW Performance Center car. Never actually hit the track, but was used in thier advertising for years, they still have it in thier ad I believe. The old Holzl DTTF car was purchased by WPVW, now Wayne should be able to get that beast on the track !!
JVLRacing ·
Dak to future is a tube chassis racecar....
Goodluck with car matt, wat steering rack is ur car running?
matberry ·
I believe the rack is Volvo, JVL, but lets be clear, not my car, I'm just building/rebuilding it 🙂
Looking forward to getting into the powerplant......hopefully I'll have a pedal at somestage too 🙂🙂🙂
