THANK YOU HERBIE!!!!
I have said that every time this subject has come up.
As long as some one is going to fix em up, I don't give a rats arse who has them.
There was before & after pics on a Scottish forum of a split kombi.
It was in a garage & you could see the bloke through the window, look close & you could see he was standing on the garage floor, INSIDE THE KOMBI.
What this bloke went through to put it back on the road was unreal.
Here, it would have been off to sims.
If that is the passion they have & this is the extent of the work they are prepared to do, then I say good luck to them.......馃槑
Then of course, there was a guy advertised a kombi on this forum a couple of months ago & all these people moaned about the price.
I'll say now what I said then;
If he put the ad on an English website, he'd have his money tomorrow & I would hear the same people bleating about another one gone.

Got to say funnily enough I agree with SPOOK and always have on this issue.
Anyone who has a problem with exporting them must really hate me and my buggy mates.
At least those that get exported live to drive another day. Most of the ones I buy I wreck and make buggies out of, yet no one has ever expressed a real problem with it.
If they really do care then they should buy a really big shed and start spending. I know where there are a vehicles ready for COMPLETE resto's.
A few months ago I tried to GIVE AWAY a 1968 Westfalia Camper and NO ONE was seriously interested. Had NO ONE even bother to look at it.
So by your measure I would have been an ass hole to send it over seas ?? WTF I didn't see you hard core enthusiasts lining up to get it out of my yard.

Well well well,
I dont think you guys are getting the point at all.
First of all, this is not one or two every month or so, this is 30 Splits at a time every couple of months. DO the Math....!
If you want to buy a Splitty any year, or parts for that matter you will be looking around forever to find them and if you do you will be paying $$$ for your buy....;-(
I dont mind if people send them over in personal quantities.
But I do get my back up when I hear of people sending shit loads off our shores every few months.
Their is not a whole lot of early stuff getting around and to hear this does not make me smile.
The had a shite loads more early stuff than what we had and now we are going to see them rust out more of the might Splitty..
If you dont agree, well thats your problem, you try finding parts for your splitty when you want to do one up.....
Bizarre 路
Does that mean anyone with a split type 1 is a thief and a rapist??
Or an enthusiast ??
MelbourneCairnsCruiser 路
For starters I think the term rape is way over the top. They are only cars after all. Second it is this sort of birthright bullshit that has some people agreeing that some other people can be locked up in camps just because they didn't fill in the "correct" paper work. If a purchaser pays the price a vendor is asking for something it is then their choice what they do with it. Personally if I had enough money I would buy every XD falcon left and give them to Simsmetal as long as they promised to crush them and then crush them once more just to be sure they stay crushed.
Spook 路
They shouldn't be in camps, they should be sent straight back, so those who haven't queue jumped come over!!
People keep leaving the word "illegal" out of the arguement.
I do something illegal they'll lock me up too.
But back to the subject at hand.
"try finding parts for your splitty when you want to do one up"
These things don't just materialise when someone wants to export them.
They have always been there & our mob either don't want them or aren't prepared to pay for them.
Either way it's our own fault.....馃槑
mattie 路
over here in sa we had a wicked kombi with porsche wheels white paint and a huge motor and it went to the uk why are they doing this are they doubling the price on it when it gets in the uk or something GET KOMBIS FROM THE UK DONT STEAL OURS WE LOVE THEM AS MUCH AS YOU DO!!!!!
Herbie 路
Yes Its sad but not so much a fault of the exporters but a fault of our economy.
So if you really want to see our kombies stay here then make sure that you and everyone you know buys Australian products and services at every oportunity and creates as many new opportunities as possible.
I believe this is the only way to ensure our dollar makes it financially unviable for people to export our kombies.
Although we are fighting an up hill battle given we dont have the sort of population that any other known country has.
Its a sad fact, money talks and BS walks.
But it cuts both ways as well, if such a trade was to be halted on the basis of nationallity we would have few MGs, American Musclecars or goggomobils etc because we as a nation dont produce shit.
We are the buck tooth slackjaws of the world that insist that the way to success it to dig up all the minerals we have and sell them to other nations for the cheapest price on earth {or else it wouldnt sell given tranportation difficulties.}
We then take those dollars and give them back, and them some, to all the other countries who have the smarts to use their cheaply accuired minerals and employ everyone to make products to sell to the world, {Many of which were invented here and then bought up by the smart overseas people who see an oportunity and take advantage of it.}
We Australians are one of biggest consumers of technology per capita in the world but you have to laugh when you see that we actually get mostly the technology that has already saturated the overseas,{wealthy} market and the excess has to be flogged to someone. After all why are our phones so primitave compared to japanese ones, surely the technology can exist here too, {Because there are billions of dollars to be made by other countries out of our technology appetite by just trickle feeding us the technology at a very profitable rate.}
I went to Japan and stood dumbfounded at the amount of hitech gadgets and appliances that were for sale, and a lot of them were made by places like singapore which not so long ago were the sitting duck, as we are now for the picking of the wealthy nations.
Singapore and other places like Hong Kong have obviously woken up to themselves and put their heads down and bums up to get ahead.
We Australian are heading for a rude shock.
So we need to be making the effort as a smart nation to create our own wealth instead of being the nation likened to the 4 year old child throwing a temper tantrum in the middle of the shopping centre with everyone watching.
We will no more get our way than the 4 year old, we need to wisen up.
So choose are we going to wisen up and help the nation get back on its feet or are we going to throw a temper tantrum about the Kombies. There are much more important problems we are facing.
We Choose a laidback complacent approach to the financial partakings of the world and now more and more we are reaping ALL the benefits.
Our Dollar has only changed value against the greenback recently because the American dollar has plumitted, it stil buys F&^kall of any other currency and America wont stay down for long.
As the world grows at an exponetial rate with population and technology we are the no longer the lucky country of years gone by, but more like we are lucky we have any country left, as people from all over the world buy Australia one piece at a time, If you look for the information rather than just accept what imformation others see fit for our cunsumption, you will find many more worrying things than "where did our Kombies go."
Like how about not so long ago women fought for the right to hold a paid job.........well didn't they run into the rotating knives flat out.
Now try and raise a family on the wage of one man with his wife raising children and looking after the home and backup support. Its a joke
We no longer have the choice.
Its my guess that before too long, if we stay on this path, then we will be making the kids work too as a matter of neccessity and heaven forbid we get sick as Doctors will be as they were a long time ago, Available only to the rich, lets see if I'm wrong.
We are not only not marching forward with the rest of the world but going backwards faster and faster
Us Aussies throwing a temper tantrums about the kombies seems very pointless to me, when for similar reasons I cant afford to live in the town I was born as land prices rise faster faster competing with interstate and overseas buyers so buying the kombie was relatively easy, affording to store it gets harder and harder.
I'm just going to stop here as I see a novel appearing before me.馃榾

If heaps of split kombies go os, then will bays be worth more?
Hmmm I wonder 馃榾
Stanley 路
Well i've been viewing this post for a couple of days and here's my 2c worth.
I don't own a splittie but i've got a '69 beetle which on occasions comes between my wife and I so I guess i'm a fanatic. (her words not mine). Now I've owned a few of them including a splittie many moons ago and for that matter a baja.
Now bear with me for a minute, My wife tells me i have this uncanny knack of always seeing two sides to an arguement and this quite often pisses her off big time.
I must admit I was one of the narrow minded people Brad spoke of with regards to people cutting up beetles to make buggies out of them but you need to sit back and be able to see the forest for the trees.
No matter what shape or form it is, whether it's been chopped, stretched shortened, cut, engine transplanted or convertablized(?) It's a volkswagen.
My point is if you can't use it yourself sell or give it to someone who can, even if that means overseas. The only thing that can hurt us is if the VW scene here in OZ reduces to the point VW businesses go out of business or we have no choice but to import overpriced parts from overseas.
So in a nutshell if we can't use them let them go to someone who can but on the other hand I wouldn't want to see a split window baja.

Yeah Id like to know if it is true as well, 30 at a time!
I dont like them going overseas as well, but I have to agree with Herbie, this is the least of our countrys troubles, and if they want to pay for them, what can we do about it!
I have known a german guy who has been sending container loads of assorted VW stuff collected at swap's and wreckers to Germany for years, Im sure some of you have come accross him, and no one, says to him he cant buy their stuff because it's heading to Germany!
Im not a rich person, and if I want something I will go without beer, takeaway, and anyother money wastage to save to get what I want, I always get there in the end, If you want a split start saving and looking, I have heard of quite a few not heaps, but 4 or 5 around that have been available for reasonable amounts $1500-$2000 obviously they need work, but most of the ones you see at shows had to have some sort of surgery to look as they do now anyway!
So if you want one, get out and find one, have a go! and you will get it!

Splitties have a cult following that the later ones just don't have......馃槑
volma1 路
Splitties do have a cult following but it appears the cult is leaning towards the older group as they are the ones most able to afford the expense involved to restore them. Perhaps that is why they are going o/s as there is probably more expendable income for their hobbies. People here should appreciate the costs involved with restoration before tackling a splittie resto. Personally I would prefer they all stayed here for posterity. People open your cheque books and keep them here( check out the single cab for sale, the green one) on another posting and see why they should stay. You could not restore one for that. volma1

BenettonVW 路
Its no secret how I feel. It is usually me starting this topic in frustration, and I know that Brad and Spook have just been waiting for me to throw my hat into the ring..
But alas, no more soapbox for me. As Brad said this is a little bit of a cut and paste topic..
However, this new topic does raise some valid points.
1. People are selling out. Full stop. No crime in that at all, more a moral issue, but the reason they are selling out is simply because of our economy. As I raised the point last time, at a guess, I could selling my Notch in the UK for roughly 8-10 thousand pounds, which converts to somewhere like $20K-$25K Aussie. Tell me, even for a split second, that that is not tempting. Even for an enthusiast. So imagine how tempting that would be for a non VW enthusiast with a splitty sitting in the back paddock rusting? So as someone previously mentioned, our economy is being taken advantage of.
2. Here in Oz we are not paying enough for our vans to stay here. That simple, that easy. Ask Rob King, he'll tell ya.
3. They have crap weather, using salt when icy on the road to get grip, so of course, when this salt is flicked up into the cars underbelly, mudguards etc, obviously it rusts, turning their cars to crap. What happens to our cars that go over there and are driven in Winter?
4. Sooner or later, our buses and\or parts are going to run completely dry.. Then what? We import our rooted buses back again for five times the price? I'd rather they rot in the paddock in the first place.
Apologies for mounting the soapbox when I said I wouldn't. 馃檨

This subject has come up so many times it's no secret who is against & who doesn't care. (it's not really a question of being"for" ).........馃槑

I to have waited to post as most know my views.
Fact, Robert from PukkaVW does send container loads of splitties and early bugs and now good condition bays.
Just look on his website...www.pukkavw.com.
Fact, Aussies still want to buy a splittie for $100
Fact, if you cant sell it here you are obviously going to look overseas.
I am not against people selling restored splitties overseas if they are selling to individuals.
What I am against is the people who come overhere and ship container loads overseas, these people then sell them for a large profit,
This causes people in Australia to think that the splittie that they have in their field, the one with no floor and full of rust is worth $5000.
They dont see that to restore a splittie is going to cost about $15000 - $20000.Just ask Rob King!
There was someone on this forum who was trying to sell a 15 window for $15000 and it needed a full resto.
How much would that end up costing???$40,000 - $50,000, who would pay that.
I believe these prices are being asked because they are seeing how mich they are going for overseas, but as someone has already said, Australia hasnt got a big a vw scene as the U.K.
I tried to sell my friends 55 kombi on this site about 2 months ago, he had no offers for it from any one in Australia yet had loads from the U.K.
He did drop his price as he wanted it to stay in Australia and ended up selling it to a guy in Melbourne, this guy knew how much it would cost to restore a splittie to the same condition..
I know I have gone on a bit but the point is , people from overseas will pay good money for them as they are used to the prices, here we will only pay peanuts.
Keep looking and you will find them??
Cheers

The point is we cant afford them as people like Pukkavw will pay large amounts of money for them and then get it back when they get to England, that way he hasnt got a load of money tied up in them.
When we want to buy one to restore or for parts , we cant afford them.
We will end up importing parts from England off busses that were originally from here.
I know he is a bussiness man and this is how he makes his money,
We are enthusiasts and we cant afford to buy half a dozen busses and have them sitting in our back yards waiting till none are left.

This is a difficult topic. You guys need to think very seriously about this.
I live in New Zealand, but i have been living in England for the last couple of years. Before i left NZ, there were VW's for everyone, and a few were going overseas to dedicated buyers. When i came back i tried to buy a split screen kombi to restore. Thats strange, none available - anyware! Aparantly a couple of enterprising englishmen travelled through the country from top to bottom, and cleaned us up. Thats right, they took everything! I was gutted!
You think that prices are getting expensive there, think how your hobby would fair if you could not even find a van, at any price! Luckily a few enthusiasts managed to keep a few but these are obviously, expensive now.
On the other hand, with their buying power their is not much you can do.
If you do not want everything to go, buy now so future generations can enjoy the experience.

Where money is on the line and you might make a bit of profit and get a couple of old splits out of a pissing field where they've been left to rot and get them to a dude who will cherish and give life back to it. Wake up and smell the coffee homeboys... you want your economy to ever do anything but go down then get a life and stop making racist comments about legitimate people doing business with each other.
If you do ever check our Volkszone you'll find there is a tiny trickle of imported Splits, not a torrent, and plenty come from South Africa etc. not just your beautiful country. By the time they get here the profit ain't huge... people do it out of love of the vechicles you sad folks, not for big money. You should try making a living in this country...

I agree with Benetton, it will become harder and harder to find bits. Even thou i grew up in the UK i cannot justify purchasing parts, eg:for my 63 notch, out of the UK that were found here.
Ya know as much as i hate to say this but... I have met this guy who runs Pukka dont underestimate him, he does find up to and above 30 kombies per visit, dunno how he does it but he finds em Its not just kombies but parts and rare, rare accessories.... i have seen it.
Sad but true

Sorry if my Xenophobe comment was over the top of the sarcastic scale, that wasn't one of my most tolerant days.
Good thing that Zoidberg guy doesnt post too often hes a bit of a dissapoinment, don't you think?
Nasty Nasty Nasty language
If hes not an exporter then he hardly need get so offended,
Forum eticut would suggest that you dont say anything on here that you wouldnt say to the potential audience in person,
If this bloke insulted me in person like he insults everyone else he'd want to have good medical insurance.
The bloke from New Zealand makes a good point and seeing the ridiculous prices of Kombies Overseas convinced me to buy mine and sit on it till I am ready to restore it as I do foresee them becoming more and more scarce.
It would be nice if we werent loosing them to overseas buyers but getting upset here on the forum wont achieve much as we are mainly enthusiasts and those who actually are Aussies, like the name of the forum suggests, dont like seeing our resourses evaporating but can do little more than express it on here.

heh well i think i'd rather see it go OS and be restored rather than rust away here. The truth is that the UK pound is worth a LOT of AUD. I just came back from the UK a weeek ago, everything is expensive (when u convert to AUD) there, but people also earn more. Our conversion rate sucks. And its not just simply because we are a lazy country, its just a tad more complicated than that.
The sad truth is that there is LOTs of demand and little supply, so splits cost $$$. Add to that our crap conversion rate and it goes into the pom's favour ever so slightly. Remember its not exactly cheap to transport a Kombi to the other side of the world, they aren't doing it for profit. Id prefer to see them stay here, but firstly id rather see them be restored, here or anywhere else 馃榾

I think I'll go hide whilst I ponder what to do with my American imported cabriolet.
The last thing I want is the American's getting upset with me because I've got one of their cars. They might invade.:jesus
But seriously guys, whilst I understand your frustration, everyone is out to make a buck - and to find something rare. That is a fact. What we don't appreciate as Aussie's is that it is now happening to us.
The moral is - do something about it. There have been numerous splits for sale on this site over the months, most of which have taken a long time to sell....so the early bird gets the worm - or the VW.
I think all of us would like to be in the position where we could make such a living. Good luck to those with the entrepreneureal skills - no matter what country. I see it as swings and roundabouts - ie - everyone wins in the end.

What the hell is going on here!

You trying to put off guys from the U.k. coming on our forum!
They must think we're just a bunch of Aussie yobbo pigs,I think it's great that people from other countries can be on here and be jealous of our stuff and the ones who have moved here can't beleive their luck.
I am sorry for any greif said by others, they do not represent all Aussies, what ever happened to the reason of us having this forum.......that's right! we all have a passion for veedubs and all share this common thing no matter where we are in the world.

Hello Mr Pickle,as I have noticed in Volksworld for sale section alot of bugs busses and ghias are left hand drive imports from the U.S. or Europe,
Is this a deterant for you guys to have a lefty if you were to buy one or does it not matter as I could not stand having a L.H.D. car in a R.H.D. country?

The question you have to ask yourself is, are you gonna buy them all? if not, well some one will. Better to see them saved than continuing to rust out in a field only to end up at SIMS.
besides all that, you guys have bought the lie, a BAY is a much better bus. You should be buying them 馃

yep buy yourself a good bay now before we see these prices here, bay campers around the $50,000 mark.

I am not whinging just asked a question and i did stump up the money to keep an oval beetle here in Oz馃榿
So can anyone tell me if they take our beetle's and type 3s etc to the UK or do they just take the split kombi's?

splits are more sort after just becasue they are rarer but any Australian import is highly prized as it offers right hand drive and RUST FREE!!!!!! , American imports go well to but given a choice people take a more expencie Aussie over the American ones (left had drive cars are legal to use in the uk with no mod plates etc)
I see both sides, when i was still in the uk the thought of getting a car i didnt have to weld the whole bottom 6 inchs and floor pan was almost a dream! Aussie cars offered that but now i am here i want them to stay so thet the price's dont get over inflated and i can still find what i want easily (yes i know prices already over inflated)
steff........
pete wood 路
As you've said steff, that horse has bolted. Besides, with the current VW scene in Aust, there are plenty of splits for people who want them and plenty left for Poms to buy from importers. We have the advantage of going for a drive and searching for them or knowing people who we can find them through. They are more plentiful than oval beetles and there are 2 ovals on Ebay this week that I'd call cheap. As far as splits being overpriced, it's not the initial purchase price that stops people buying a 'restorer' (which is still well below similar classic cars), it's the $10-20k of repairs needed to put it on the road... and that even applies to the good ones.
There is no such thing as a 'rust free' split now. My boss got one off a farm last year near Broken Hill. Even it has rust and there is NO rain out there.
waltermitty 路
iF you want a split in Australia they are still available and cheap.
One went on ebay this week buy now $500. The ones that get sent to the UK can be bought buy Aussies cheap!
Buy the time they get to the UK they have shipping middlemen etc etc and then they are more expensive but are still selling ,
There are many splits on the road now that would have been crushed for scrap if they wernt sort after buy Poms and us.

I've been reading for hours on here and this thread intrigued me, I m new here and hopefully since you don't want buses leaving your country maybe you can help me out.
just a brief back ground I m in the UK right now but looking to move over to Australia once my visa is all sorted and I was thinking of buying a split here restoring it and then bringing it with me. I m even going to look at an OZ import I may bring back, HOWEVER I m a little daunted by the importation process and don't like the idea of spending out on a resto only to find it getting locked up in customs for some insane red tape reason.
So call this a crazy idea that came to me while reading this thread but what are the chances of me finding a resto project and having it restored in australia ready(ish) for my arrival?
I've already seen some restorers work in OZ and I m impressed very impressed.
I want a splitscreen as a promotional bus for work I m a tradesman, what I want is a crewcab, if I can't find one then either a single cab or panel. I'd prefer a crew cab over all else since I can't afford to run two cars and then I can fit my new VW friends in it at the weekend 馃槑
Care to help out?

many, many companies/dudes that can do a spectacular resto on your chosen bus........just wondering how much $$$ YOU are expecting a dually to cost, then restore?
ducktape 路
I don't know the costs of a crew cab in OZ, I have seen a LHD for sale in OZ that says its complete and ready to drive the photos look promising and thats up for $23,000.
I would need some input from you guys to give me a rough idea of what I could pick one up for, it would be difficult to compare UK prices since many are shipped from overseas needing restoration and thats not a good comparison to work from.
what can I expect to pick one up for to restore you tell me...
