high speed track issue??

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/87712/high-speed-track-issue

Bizarre ·

Just a question on handling at higher speeds

My car drives fine and handles well - most of the time

The only time I have an issue is if I change lanes on a multi lane free way at higher speeds.
Not that I would drive in excess of 110km/hr - but lets just assume for the sake of arguement that I did 🙅

As I said -
if I drive straight - fine
if I go round a corner - fine

The issue I have is when I go to and changle lanes and hit the cats eyes I seem to get a quick twist/pull/track issue. Sort of like a very quick left right??

Nothing major - just a bit of a pull/wiggle

Hard to test but seems to be only when i hit cats eyes??
Not many places I can test without lane markers
Dont believe it is an issue if I drive on a single lane and go to overtake

Is it just the fact I am running wide wheels??
Rear wheel alignment?

vw54 ·

NO get a torsion bar front end never a problem with them

HappyDaze ·

How wide are your tyres? Very wide tyre can 'tram-line', particularly if the wheel alignment is not spot on.

1303Steve ·

Hi Baz

You may need more caster.

Steve

vw54 ·

have u checked all the bushes n ball joints for wear

the cat eyes will lift the load from the wheel

Bizarre ·

Thanks for the replies

Dave
Go away - NEVER will I take a retrogressive step

Happy
Tires
Front - 205 16" 55 series
Rear - 225 16" 50 series

Are you talking front or rear wheel alignment or both??

Steve
How do you adjust caster??

Dave
Ball joints are less than 2 years old
I did a FULL front end bush upgrade a while back

1303Steve ·

Hi

Caster is fixed but it can be adjusted if adjustable strut tops are fitted or a new sway bar with caster adjustment built in.

Steve

Joel ·

Like Greg said its just tram tracking, I get it in mine when I have big rims on.
Bout the only downside to having wide tyres on.

I generally do my own alignments but a good computer one by a tyre shop can usually get rid of it.
I fixed my castor problems with lowered swaybar and castor fix bushings from topline,

Ha ha. Go on Barry, you know you want to,

HappyDaze ·

I've been trying to figure out what the cats eyes had to do with your problem.😵‍💫 OK, they usually put them on the join - where the lanes of hot-mix meet, right? Those joints are not always even or level, and when the tyres hit that uneven joint, the tend to follow the crooked line.👎 That's known as 'tram lining' (or 'tram tracking', if you are from the Northern Rivers area) - the wider the tyres, the worse it is, usually. Maybe that's why those V8 Super-duper car drivers keep hitting each other - they use VERY wide tyres.😂😂😂

Bizarre ·

HappyDaze
What I mean by cats eyes is the white bump things on the broken lines between lanes on the M4
When I hit them I have my moment

vw54 ·

Barry

have you tried holding onto the wheel tighter ????

Mate do yrself a favour and convert it to a torsion bar no more clunks or bangs

What toe in do u have maybe a little more may get it tracking better

Then get the council to widen the road so that you can turn your car around, and in return you can plough fields for them with the tractor suspension

vw54 ·

at least they dont have issues "" high speed track issue?? """

HappyDaze ·

You're getting a lot of advice here, and it's all free🙄 The thing about free advice..........you get what you pay for.😂

So how do you describe what happened
with the Vintage car at Warwick Dave?!😂

If it had more lock he could have caught it

what are your shocks and struts like ?

All newish -
KYB's on the rear about 4 years old
Boge?? inserts on the front about a year old

its a superbug thing
there shite

johny rotten ·

as already stated above ,more caster will improve stability at higher speeds
😂

I agree with this and I love my Super! The front end design just does like to shake and shimmy around. You've done well to only have it happening at high speeds, mine sometimes does it a 60km/h. Tried new bushes and so forth, but I think it's just basically an inherent flaw in the design. The only thing which always cures it for me is putting weight in the front. When I'm helping a mate work on his car and load up with a heavy floor jack, axle stands and other tools then the car drives beautifully. With no load in the front the ride is not as nice and it occasionally gets the 'superbug shimmies'.

Now what did Happy say about free advice 😘

as usual another quality lot of information there mate keep up the good work
tosser
mine drive as smooth as any beam version ive driven.

1303Steve ·

Hi

I haven't had the shakes since I went to Urethane bushes.

When you lower a Super you actually take caster away, the wheels get pushed toward the back of the car.

Try some caster fix bushes, I have some you can borrow if you want, I took them out my sons bug as they made the tyres touch the front edge of the mudguard, we only have fag paper of clearance at the best of times.

Steve

johny rotten ·

thats funny , beam front end cars don't have any tracking issues
Tosser 😀

more caster will help at high speeds. not enough caster will cause twitchiness and instability at high speeds.
Polyurethane bushes help enormously. I know first hand 👍 👍

Another important thing to look at,
no matter what type of front suspension you use,
is that the steering axis still coincides with the tyre contact patch.

This is more common on supers because wider wheels
with the correct offset would normally touch on the springs.
When the contact patch of the tyre is too far away
from the steering axis "projected point", it does as you describe.

Of course all the advice regarding the
correct geometry and
good condition of ALL parts is very important too.
All to often, people will say, "its all perfect",
when in actual fact there are still some worn parts,
or stuff that was "just replaced" that is actually many years/miles old.

dangerous ·

...and a steering damper that is working properly
will often help cover/help thse issues.

mmmmmmmmmm........... a R&P 1303 doesnt have a steering damper??

Dont believe this would apply as I am running 6" rims with 40ET with thin spring struts

Tyre centre is same as before

Joel ·

Supers only get a bad name because people just don't know how to fix shimmys and just put up with it.

It's not that hard to get rid of them, I've got topline urethane bushings in mine and havent had shimmy problems in years
The fact I can drive at 170km/h with one hand holding the camera reinforces they're safe and stable at high speeds.

With all the supers I've owned and worked on over the years I can safely say 9 times out of 10 its the rims that cause shimmys

Mine hasnt had any for years but I bet I could make it wobble worse than granny titties by bolting on the hotwires under the house.
14" rims are the worst for causing shimmys.

vw54 ·

didnt we fix this 2 days ago get more caster

waveman1500 ·

Joel wrote:14" rims are the worst for causing shimmys.
But I love my 14" rims! Backyard built by some unknown person in the '70s as well. They definitely can't be the issue! 😀

forry2000 ·

as previously said put a beam in the front and you will never have any problems.

and Barls - the word 'tosser' is probably not appropriate to get your point across no matter how disillusioned you may be.

Joel ·

A fixable highspeed track issue or a tractor ride quality......hmmmmm

think I'll go buy a link pin bug 😂

Damn Barry look what you started

The ride in my Baja is fine!! 😂😂

Especially when ploughing through fields 😂😂

Sweet, I've got an 18foot disc ripper here you can go drag round around the paddock for me
Im sure the VW crank pulley would spin the PTO shaft 😂

vw54 ·

especially as we know a strut front end will get BO gg ED

The little Baja with her 1300 would do it!

She can tow Kombis, and Daewoos and the odd Commodore!

OK - all good

I move slowly these days

A rear wheel alignment and new offset torsion bar bushing for caster
