nbturbo ·

whathaveidone-well it looks you done got yourself a nice shed and a good collection of VWs-"welldone".How about a story on what you are doing to improve the car.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Keep us posted dude on the results and fingers crossed no breakages!!

RAZ34 ·

Hey Ben ,
Good to see you have washed Morgans blood off it.
RR .

Stanley ·

600kgs....not bad plus it has a pretty substantial cage too from memory

I also know where to go now for type 3 front guards

humpty ·

600kgs????.... Dang that's pretty light weight indeed!

1916baja ·

where did you get the perspex done? mainly the curved rear window? was it expensive? i don't think craig had the peerspex in....

humpty ·

Cheap!!!! $120 for a sheet of 3mm lexen, $20 for a sheet of 3mm MDF for templates ,a few bucks for rivits and lots of hours. Morgan did most of the shaping while i was away for work. Big thanks to him. Made up some tabs and rivited them all together
UV stable?

1916baja ·

It looks great, Did you loose much weight by taking the glass out? Did Morgan have to heat and shape the rear window or did you just bend it to shape as you fitted it? I have been considering doing it to my drag car project but a little unsure of how to go about it??? when you weigh up costs for a set of new window rubbers i think it would be just about even right?

humpty ·

Morgan kick you out? 😁

But seriously.... Something happen at the TNT?

Stanley ·

nice work....keep us posted

humpty ·

Excellent work!

1916baja ·

Where abouts did you get that cooling set up? Is it effective enough?

justkampers ·

hey there does the thermo fan on top do a good job at cooling it looks pretty awesome.

RISKY4LIFE ·

love the thermo setup
is it running the same engine ?
this is one of my fav car's in oz!

kempos ·

Hey Ben, nice thread. Ya pics look good. Hope the rest of the work goes smoothly... Thanks HEAPS for ya help this afternoon :-) I can't believe i've already had to push my car off the road :-(

essex ·

How did you go with the beam brackets?
cheers
Barry

essex ·

Its looking good by the way.

essex ·

Ive been trying to get a 4" Jaymar beam from Ralph at VeeDub parts, the're out of stock till new batch produced.

Nice work!!!

Congratulations on the baby!!!!!

Gracey ·

Congratulations!

Nice video, thanks.

humpty ·

Well done on the comp.... Good to see your not shy about cutting up the car!.... Have you sourced a frontend yet?

hellbugged ·

go to Westi for the f'glass stuff

Stanley ·

Any idea of the weight difference between what you've removed and the FG front.

This is something i'm keen on

1916baja ·

nice! Hey, do those westy cooling set ups run any sort of cooler or is it normally just the fan blowing over the heads?

Stanley ·

looking good. Keep us posted on the progress

Dak-A-Tak ·

Ben , as that car got drop spindles yet ? big air gap in wheelwell now . Go's on and on !!

matberry ·

No caster change with dropped spindles.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Don't forget guard bolts ,front bonnet hardware , hingers for bonnet , fuel tank ( what tank will you be running )
It's being coming a race car now Ben ! Chasing the 11's

Stanley ·

wow...33kgs. I didn't expect that much. Will be interesting to see the difference in times.
Keep up the good work

cjbolt051 ·

all looks good mate. when will it hit the track again with the new look and improvements?..

cjbolt051 ·

while you have your windows out what are the chances of tracing them onto some cardboard as templates for mine..

essex ·

whathaveidone wrote:yes uv stable, Not sure how much weight from just windows have no before weights. Morgans car runs full glass and tinware generator and fan, lighter cage and his car weighs 699ks. didnt have to heat it. just wraped it around. Aslong as you get the template right its a piece of piss. more time was spent on the templates than the real thing.

any tips on cutting the polycarbonate sheet?

dangerous ·

Jigsaw Barry!
Might have to experiment with blade pitch.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

When pagey did his he also used a bit of baby powder to help the jigsaw glide across the lexen without it grabbing and jumping. Will also reduce the risk of scratching as well!!

essex ·

Thanks everyone for the info, worked out really well & neat,
cheers
ps my 1/2 sheet (1220 x 1220mm)of material cost $198.00!

westi ·

You can actually buy a scratch proof stuff . Pretty dear though.
About 800 - 1k per sheet.it is a pretty big sheet though.
As for cutting that's easy I cut it on the guillotine .lucky I got 1 I suppose

1916baja ·

Gee thats HUGE! Is it gonna fit in your car??😂

beetleboyjeff ·

Maybe in the glove box? lol

Grey Ghost ·

How many passes per filling are you planing on making with that size tank? 1.5 to 2 liters min per pass?
Andrew

2442supercharged ·

hey ben just wondering why you still have slicks on

Grey Ghost ·

I use about 2.0 to 2.5 lts on a 1/4 mile pass. That includes some driving up to the stageing lane, a burnout, the pass and hopefully the return to the pit!

westi ·

i use about 5-6ltr's per run.haha

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

westi wrote:i use about 5-6ltr's per run.haha
Is that in oil or fuel booooohHahahahahaha

Grey Ghost ·

I’m using that dam awful VP 115 supreme. It corrodes everything it comes into contact with, gums up & crystallizes in the carburetors when left unattended, stinks out the car each pass, the vapors gives me a headache, it cost S*%t loads to buy, it doesn’t keep fresh for long, the car chews up heaps of it every pass BUT it makes good hp.

Best thing is you can crank some serious timing into the ignition and run high compression ratio without fear of frying the heads and pistons.

dangerous ·

Man, I think i would rather use 98 pump fuel or methanol!
I get 205lt of methanol for a whole year and the last lot was only $210!

Grey Ghost ·

Tell me about it. It pains me to spend near on $300 for fuel each time I race and thats not including the diesel for the transporter to get me there.
That’s why Beetle Juice will be running on methanol next year At least methanol won’t cost us $140 per 20lt drum.
Cheers
Oh yeh and I forgot the driver and co builder of Beetle Juice, Steve Craven works for Coogee Energy who makes the Methanol race fuel . I hope he can arrange for a sponsorship deal for himself!
PS my engine is 2332cc but runs 12.5 compression and a massive cam.

Funny YOU talkin about checkin fluids on a drag car Brennden !!!

Or maybe it was Troy...

😂

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

No smoke from my old girl Dave!! As for Troy yes he is a member of westi's puffing Billy brigade!!

Funny how the cars that blow a fair bit of smoke were all pretty quick!!

Westi, Troy, Wayne Penrose lol

Stock nothing like checking the oil after each run. More equals plenty of upper cylinder lube hey lol

STOCK ·

thats exactly it
finally someone gets it 😂😂😂

typethreeking ·

mate that was tyre smoke😂😂
i dont need to check my oil, plenty in the dry sump tank...

STOCK ·

typethreeking wrote:mate that was tyre smoke😂😂

hey troy
the tyres have to break traction for tyre smoke dude
so it has to be oil 😂😂😂

typethreeking ·

tyre smoke from rubbing on the body, told you not to sit in the back🙅

20bkombi ·

whathaveidone wrote:what fuel are you guys useing!!!!!! im only use pulp 98. You both have bigger engines than me. Ill just have to wait and see.
Have you looked in to E85?
Ive been doing a lot of research on the E85 from the pump ($1.05L), not the
$2.00 stuff from race shops.
Should be very good for a volksy engine, run cooler, more timming, more power and you only need 25-30% more of it than 98, as opposed to methanols 2.3 times more.
I'm also told it has a wide window for tuning, we will see.

20bkombi ·

Oh, my main reason for E85 over methanol is I don't need to add 6 more 1700cc injectors on top of my current 6x 1700's,
and I can drive it on the street.
Though doesn't relate to your car, but still worth a look.
Keep the pics coming!!

2442supercharged ·

i run E85 in my car it is a good fuel but i have to flush it out as it turns black from the fuel line and blockes the pump nozzles in the carby.

airhead ·

i wonder if the rubber is synthetic or natural you be talking about. will that make a difference?
i know with synthetic oil you really cant use natural rubber as it will deteriorate.
maybe the same for fuels😀

2442supercharged ·

the guy that dynos are cars gets it. i think you can buy it from a servo in sydney

mactaylor ·

yeah nothing is sacred with our crew so it just feels normal! just need thick skin and back bone!

Come on Ben, not hard to calculate the volume of a cylinder......3.14159 x radius x radius x height......I'm sure you'll work it out mate 🙂

mactaylor ·

384cc

matberry ·

mmm 384 ml 😂

westi ·

just poor some beer's in buddy.hahah.
will that be enough fuel.?
even when mine was on pump fuel ,it used to use more than that.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Mate has just had new ve ss tuned on e85 and got good results. Cam change, over the radiator intake, exhaust and headers, mafless tune and made 335kw and 755nm torque!! Some blokes out there with s/c kits on their commodores are making slightly more kw but the same amount of torque. His first run at willowbank getting feel for the new car on street tyres he ran 11.1@134mph with a tame launch(manual). E85 is definitely something I am looking into especially for street use that for sure.

You won't get an arguement out of me about the benefits of converting to E85. Especially when used in forced induction applications & its also street legal.

Sorry for getting off topic though!

But 11.1@134mph with 335rwkws in a full bodied VE!

To me that is 100% fishy to me sorry.

Either the car is completely stripped or it has a hit of juice to run 134mph!

For a 3900lbs VE to run 134mph, it needs at least 700+hp

A normal weighted VZ-VE with around 310-330rwkws will run approx 116-118mph.

I know this, as my own full weight daily driver ute with 313rwkws with a 3800 stall has run only 110mph on ET streets & that was with a shagged 3800 converter & a very lazy 1.8 60ft! (this would be around the same 325-330rwkws if it was a manual!)

This should run a 11.7-11.9@114-117mph. Just waiting for my auto to be repaired (stuff reverse clutch drum) & refit it all with a proper 4200 stall & then head back to the track once the crappy VIC weather clears up!!!!

Was going to fit a 100-125 hit of juice, but decided to spend the $$$ building a proper built 20v turbo engine for my Mk1 golf.

Unless time slip lies i've seen the slip!!

motha ·

Unless time slip lies i've seen the slip!!
Physics is physics.

A car that weighs x amount, with x amount of power, can only MPH so fast over 1320ft!

Any drag racing nut will say the same thing.

A friend of mines Mk1 which is the same as my own Mk1 Golf in regards to weight, with less power, run 2 tenths slower, but MPH 18+mph more than my own car!

I have also seen the time slip

Mmmmmm.

Ah well. Maybe its just a freak of an engine then.

Sorry for getting off topic.

morgan ·

Bright Orange! Very nice!

What color is it called by the charts?

The orange that Steve and I used for Beetle Juice was called "Beetle Juice" by the paint supplier.

Looking nice can't wait to see it finished at Warwick.

Only one draw back, it dosent look "ratty" anymore. you may have to change the name now?

Cheers

Curious tho cos have noticed on a couple of drag cars now... no paint on the inner guards and firewalls... a weight saving thing, or just painting separately ???

1916baja ·

Cool, thanks i'll give it a crack....

SuperOwen ·

Schmick, Ford vermillion fire paint? Looks like my first car colour, except your flat paint job is about as shiny as my gloss paint job was.....

LOWBUG ·

Gotta ask, why the matte finish?

1916baja ·

I like it! matt finish all the way 👍 although i went with matt finish for very different reasons.... To hide as much of my bad prep work as possible!

HS618 ·

Looking good Ben!!!
If you want, I have some secret squirrel polish that will bring it up a treat.
Any idea which T/T you will be running as there are a few before Warwick? - H

LOWBUG ·

Mmmm, secret squirrel polish very good for slip factor, also difficult to sand back for respray when needed.

SuperOwen ·

Yeah, its real close to that colour. When I asked asked for that colour to be mixed up the paint guy just said to me "yeah I know the colour, Brambles Orange" not sure if the orange trucks are still around? My car was cruelly known as "the Orange Peel" due to it's show standard finish......

morgan ·

1916baja wrote:Looking good mate! 👍 What did you use to paint the black parts on your windows??
Use a set of dividers get one point nice and sharp set them at the size you want and run it everly around the edge of your windows, paint the inside but dont do what Ben did and put a grey primer on first

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

So are you going to paint the exhaust with some flat black exhaust paint???

Tell ya what... each time I look at this thread, I love that colour even more !!!

I know you guys all love the orange...... But..... 👎

It's right up there with yellow as far as I'm concerned...... But that just might be the art teacher in me..... Yes folks..... I'm one of 'those' art wankers....

But appart from that.... The car is coming along nicely!!!!

wagoon69 ·

WOW! How bout you show us all (YOUR ART?)😂

humpty ·

wagoon69 wrote:WOW! How bout you show us all (YOUR ART?)😂
It's pretty well documented actually.... Have a look around.

And just to nip this little conversation in the butt before people get their noses out of joint.... If we all did and liked the same thing, it would get very boring.... What is being built here is awesome to see and enjoyable to watch/read.... I just don't like the colour.... Simple as that.

RISKY4LIFE ·

OMG colour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i like it ...but i liked it before too 🙂

wagoon69 ·

I have Humpty! And yeah great car.....................

humpty ·

Hey Ben..... Can you tell me how the transaxle has been mounted?..... I assume solid, but has it been lifted at all?..... I really like the beam and mods you did there.... Odd that you needed to do the beefing up, but given the damage that has been experienced but others, it was a smart move.... How much lighter is the beam compared to stock?.... The reason I ask, is that I have been thinking about getting one from Rodney for the POS.

beetleboyjeff ·

I can pretty much taste that orange Ben. Looks great.

humpty ·

On the POS I have one of those ali kits that Mark (?) was selling out of here (its the one that's both stock and 1" higher).... And some of Craig's K bars along with the traction bar (off my old car) I got from Hellbug way back in the day... Worked really nicely on the car.... Launched very hard with no tramp at all..... But have been thinking about going with the 1" lift with the rebuild.... My concern currently is the clearance with my ERCO's (205/70-15's and stock guards) if I do it.... How close are your rear tyres to the guard lip currently, and do you think you'll have enough upper guard clearance if you do go with the lift?... You've got fiberglass guards, so might have more room.... I just dunno.

Sides ·

That front on shot with the clip fitted... just... WOW.

👍 👍 👍

Is it going to be getting painted headlights and stickers and stuff, or just staying the one colour all over ???

Also I think you need to change the title of your thread... there's not too much "rat" about this car now, and barely identifiable from when Craig had it...

hellbugged ·

Looks mad as....thought it was red oxide from the first pics

vassy66T1 ·

I love the enthusiasm that you have shown in continually developing this car.

All-Ways Rigging?.... Morgans mate that made his tie-downs?..... You Ben?

humpty ·

Now it's a team effort.... All you need is a tandem trailer and big arse hauler like Rodney's to drag the lot around!!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Lookin a bit flash there Benny!! Morgan looks a but second hand so I'm guessing he had already a few amber cordials by the time you took the pic hahaha

Paulc1964au ·

?????????? [/quote]

With a rake like that my car, was a handful at the top end.... The cross winds are murder at the Motorplex here in WA, which I'm sure doesn't help!.... So I stacked two caster shims (4 in total) which really helped..... But as my car is getting revamp, I will be chopping the framehead (to build in some caster) in the very near future... And lifting the transaxle.... Hoping this will help with the topend stability...

But back onto this one..... Jeez Ben you gotta be stoked with your 60' times!!!!..... This car is a bloody credit mate...

matberry ·

Definately the caster is a problem, linkpin shims will also need correcting to get the desired pack total and set correctly for camber.

Well done on getting back on track. 👍

Did , you check anything out first ?

vw54 ·

Ben

Did u check to see if the beam is straight before you make a drastic cut it may be out of shape

dangerous ·

Good work Ben!

Sides ·

OK, so now I understand what a pie cut is !!!

With an 8mm pie cut like that... is that based on running no caster shims after the cut ?

coletrickle ·

I like pies!and cookies!.As for the car name i can't see how smooth the paint is but if its not to smooth you could call it the"Valencia Special"

essex ·

do the 90/10s still work ok with the dropped spindles & height you have it?
be interesting to hear how it drives, looking good

humpty ·

Does that mean your gonna have to mod your front body mount now?

Good work Ben....

Stanley ·

Nice job Ben. Let us now how it feels in anger

Get German ones and you need a reamer or go to someone that has one.

humpty ·

Nice looking work there Ben.... And as Matt said.... German is the only way to go.... I use Bilsten ones everytime.... The bronze is a beautiful quality as are all the other parts in the kits... The one thing I often use from the old OG sets are the the fibre washer and pressed cap spacer (for lack of the correct name!)... Have found the kit supplied ones to be of an inferior quality.

humpty ·

Single circuit MC?

Looks very neat Ben.... Looking forward to having a closer look next month!

humpty ·

Oh ok.... I have been thinking about building proper staging brake into my car (instead of using the hand brake), but was unsure how to plumb it all in... Might have to have a real close look at your car next month! 😁

Last run for RR was an 11.6 (waiting for the boys to wake up to confirm my recollection 🙂 )
DB did get one pass with half track being very good, around previous best.
Wally ran 142mph on his one an only pass. A 10.5.
The factory extreme boys (on a non vw note) were laying down 6 second passes everywhere. 2 @ 6.4 passes yesterday.

Ben, thats close (how was the 60' on that run?)

Awesome day volksies racing and bare boobies....😵

Mine went pretty consistant except for the 14.78 which came about after the dizzy hold down nut fell off and ejected the dizzy which resulted in no spark. Was on a mission catching one of the Alcorn bros.

Ben ran out of electricity and couldn't get the car started. Unfortunate way for him to end after sorting the fuel pump issue.

Col was Mr consistancy until he came up against me and lost his nerve.....😂

Rod also ran hard. I was behind him and the car launches hard and straight.

Thanks again to those that came and said g'day. Lets do it again next weekend.

Dasdubber ·

Well done guys for getting out and representing the Volksies amongst the sea of rotaries. Sorry I didn't get a chance to catch up with everyone as we were on borrowed time with my little boy in the heat and a hung over brother in law feeling the pain after a big night 🙂

Saw two rounds of racing and lots of bikini girls (Kai particularly liked the girl who in his words "poured water all over her boobs" - not sure if his kindy teacher will like his answer tomorrow when asked "kids what did you do on the weekend?") Didn't think he would have quite seen them from the jumping castle but ah well. 🙂

I'm just trying to get him motivated

westi ·

you do heaps of weird shit behind closed doors benny,
dont knock the pushy till you've tried it.
got to try everything atleast once before you die,so they say.😘😘😘😘😘

ian.mezz ·

come on young Ben , Rose was doing 104MPH last year
and now with some slicks , she sure to improve a little.
😊 look out

typethreeking ·

I ran a 13.6 at 102mph when I first ran then fastback after the dyno day, only made 160hp back then so was surprise with that mph!

matberry ·

Yeah, come on Benny......all those lonely nights away.........lotsa wierd things for sure, but that won't make ya any faster!!!!!!!

westi ·

😀🤓

SuperOwen ·

Tripped over an Autocraft engine and landed on this ARPM cased 2442cc down at Rod's. Might fit in your's Ben?

Stanley ·

2442... Wholly shit i'd better shut up and stop slinging shit

Stanley ·

So the other rumour about an 1835 is true then

essex ·

Good stuff Ben,

SuperOwen ·

My mistake its not 2442cc, it's 2443cc. But what's one cc between friends?
He only gets an 1835 if he doesn't swallow.

SuperOwen ·

Well your going to have a lot of explaining to do when you show up at the track with the big motor....

humpty ·

Good stuff Ben...

1916baja ·

Why?

1916baja ·

Mine leaked from there until I recently pulled it out to get the work done! I ended up getting DB to fit the axles and tubes this time as I obviously suck at it! I think he said he puts a bit of silicone between the gaskets because most of the time the retainers are not real straight...

tar76 ·

motor looks killer mate...you boys have been busy.

1916baja ·

And yeah, that engine does look bling!

1916baja ·

That sucks.

dangerous ·

whathaveidone wrote:Not that joint. There is a join in the metal!!!! The gaskits arnt leaking, I learnt to seal them up good long ago.
Early ones are a one piece,
and the later ones are two pieces riveted/spotwelded together.

The two piece ones have an o-ring inside,
and usually get some sealant too
since they are older than you or I they are nor perfect anymore.

If your tranny is raised,
you should be able to witdraw the retainer back enough to seal it up with a new O-ring.

dangerous ·

There is a lip that is formed at the joint between the inner and outer pieces.
It will be obvious once you pull back the retainer.
If you run a bead of silicone in the groove before fitting the O-ring,
it will help it do the job.

The new O-rings I have here are 3.4 to 3.5 mm diameter material, about 125mm diameter
so you can cut this size and re-join, with joint upper most.
Most bearing shops will have o-ring material and the special glue.

essex ·

Look forward to seeing it at next weekend, good stuff Ben.

Stanley ·

Bummer Ben...if I was closer i'd come and help out

SuperOwen ·

Give us a shout if you need an extra hand during the week.

westi ·

zip tie and a rag mate, she'll be right.lol
atleast your nearly ready.
now you just gota make some pony's(not shetlins) to get that heavy beast movin.

humpty ·

Good to see your making progress Ben... Shame about the issues, but good you found it, and can get to it.... Will give you a call in the next day or so about the flight.

Stanley ·

Dak-A-Tak ·

Ben , did you buy the motor or renting it ? Your car will like the extra power .

SuperOwen ·

I think you need a longer coil lead

Dak-A-Tak ·

Ben , good work . Just keep an eye on that coil end , the end is fasten with glue ( normal style coil with adopter on it )
We had one come off , when i pulled coil wire out .

1916baja ·

Awesome dude, I'd love to see how the new stance is without the drop spindles and with the new bonnet...

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:Just saw on Facebook that Marty Staggs is here for the Jambo from the US. Put on a show Benny lol

Ha ha! Don't choke mate!😂

1916baja ·

He must have heard about a shit hot orange bug in oz and just had to see it!

humpty ·

Marty is a Turbosmart reseller in the US, so it's quite possible he's here as a guest of there's... I'm sure the dubs will get a little visit from him.... Especially the turbo guys. 😁

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I'm guessing it something to do with Turbosmart. He is the general manager of Turbosmart USA!! Well that is what his fb profile says lol

humpty ·

So?

Stanley ·

I think Mr Staggs is more than a reseller. I would guess as the Turbosmarts rep in the US of A it was a company funded trip to visit what is potentially a big event for turbosmart products in Oz.

humpty ·

whathaveidone wrote:So? What????

Hilblrn roller throttles ? Is this ex speedway ?

Way cool !

hypo-vw ·

looks good Ben . Has the engine been refreshened and if so was it done in US or over here ?

vassy66T1 ·

Sweet!! Looks like fun to come

dangerous ·

whathaveidone wrote:Fin What do you guys out there who have used them think.Any pros and cons
I think the roller throttles are great, but are quite small so may limit you in future.
Despite this, the first ever NA 9's were run with those by Dean Lowry!

The other throttles are the same as what I ran on my Pauter heads, and can be bored out easily to 56mm, they are likely 50mm or perhaps 2".

I have heard that they can be bored as large as 58mm which will flow way more than those heads even at 50mm.

Just a tip,
with mechanical injection you will want a supply line and fittings with at least 5/8"(16mm) INSIDE DIAMETER
if the tank is up front with MINIMAL BENDS.

With my tank at the rear and 1/2" inside diameter hose and drilled fittings,
it works OK but -8 was too small and cavitated (boom).
