Sydney Dragway, NSW, March 26 & 27, 2011

Calling VWs to compete or be a part of the unique Day Of The Drags at Sydney Dragway.

Two day event at the world class Sydney Dragway featuring pre-1975 vehicles.

Old-school drag racing... for drag racers.

Limited entry numbers each day to ensure value for money and more than the usual number of passes.

Spectators can attend Saturday racing, Saturday evening entertainment, Sunday racing or purchase a weekend pass.

Saturday follows the well established Day Of The Drags format with entries open to vehicles running the quarter mile in 11 seconds or slower and also includes the 2nd annual Sidevalve Shootout. Lunch time and afternoon entertainment includes No Brakes live on stage. You can also meet the roller derby team from Western Sydney Rollers.

Sunday will feature vehicles with elapsed times from 10.99 and faster with E.T. grouped classes so you can see a Front Engine Dragster against a 6 second sedan. Everything from wild hot rods, FEDs, gassers and even nitro powered vehicles are invited to enter. Several nitro cars are confirmed.

Saturday night entertainment (to midnight) at the track includes live rockabilly music from Satellite V, vintage pin-up competition, twilight car show, crusing, and children's attractions.

ASRF Sanction: S11/19

Prices:
PRIMARY DRIVER ENTRY: $175.00 (Admits 1 X Primary Driver only for as many runs as he/she wants all day. Includes 5 X 2-day tickets to distribute as you wish (e.g. 2 X crew members and 3 X guests/spectators).

Line up change for the bands... Satellite V will now be playing on Saturday night.

This event, even when by invitation, always gets plenty of press coverage.

Several VWs have run in the past, with Henry Spicak making it to the finals last year. Great event for early VWs to mix it up and good potential to get more dakdaks in print now that this is a major two day event!

Don't forget, the way we run the day, even if you get knocked out in eliminations you can still run all day as we have grudge racing between competition rounds in the second half of the day.

HotRodMatt ·

Camping at the track for entrants.

STOCK ·

i'll have a chat to brad
but i think we'll be keen to get the junka out for sure

whathaveidone ·

Hoping to have mine up and going by then. Gunna be pretty busy with bub but

HotRodMatt ·

Awesome! Don't forget that entry includes driver and 5 others for the whole weekend!
Pits are also allocated for both days, so race Saturday and don't leave til Sunday arvo.

Several Top Doorslammers (appropriate pre-75 body styles) have entered along with nitro burning FEDs and a 5 second funny car!

We should also have a very special raffle prize to announce next week!

westi ·

we will be there for sure.
sounds like a good weekend.
are and queenslanders gona come down for a squirt.

I'm planning to providing the new buggy works out okay at Portland.

👍

Ollie ·

Will be along to support the boys and girls!

hypo-vw ·

I have downloaded and printed off entry forms for both Ben Ford and myself for Day Of The Drags . Entries will be submitted straight after Portland depending on the condition of the cars.....
We are both very keen to run.....

VWMA Editor ·

Well, as most know already, the buggy did not go to Portland but stayed with customs in a nice warm quarantine area. All's good now, though, and Rod and I will begin the task of getting it ready for the weekend. We're confident there should not be too much difficulty with the tech inspection and we're hopeful of at least making a few test'n'tune passes on the first day. As the buggy is pretty light, we're going to start with a 1916cc engine and work out the best combo from there. Should be good fun!

rose ·

from how I read the entry form you have to allocate a time that you will be running either 11 sec and slower only on Sat and faster cars on Sun 10.99 sec and quicker.
It's on the top of the entry form.

So Craig maybe you should ring them and make sure that you are able to run on the Sat.

Let us know as I'm confused if everyone ran on Sat 200cars the slower cars wouldn't get many passes.

HotRodMatt ·

rose wrote:Let us know as I'm confused if everyone ran on Sat 200cars the slower cars wouldn't get many passes.
No cars faster than 11sec will run on Saturday.

We are limiting maximum entry numbers on both days as even though the event has grown, it is still an event "for the racers".

As fast as you can turn the car around and get back into the staging lanes you will get another run.

whathaveidone ·

Reluctantly have decided not to enter this year. to busy at the moment. will be there on the day just no car.......

VWMA Editor ·

Come on Ben - you've got 4 weeks. There's no party without the rat!

whathaveidone ·

Thats not the sort of encouragement i needed. When do the entre's close.

hypo-vw ·

entry filled out and posted off today for the WPVW turbo oval ... Ben will not be running the supercharged bug as he has to go lawn bowling.... give me a break !!🤪
However we will both be running the following weekend at the compak attack ....

VWMA Editor ·

You've got until the 18th. If it makes you feel any better, I still have to get a tech on the buggy and I won't have a chance to test until the day. Short wheel base car on the 1/4... never driven it ... mmm... that could be fun, sort of.

Lawn bowls? That's a novel excuse. Synthetic or grass? Indoors or outdoors?

HotRodMatt ·

whathaveidone wrote:Thats not the sort of encouragement i needed. When do the entre's close.
Entries close on the 18th of March.

westi ·

i want to go ,but i can't take old smoky, with out fixin her first.
com on stock com give me a hand fatty.

HS618 ·

Hey Matt, It's looking like a very well supported event judging by the amount of entries on the Sydney Dragway website!!
What are the chances of the VW's pitting together? - That is, if each of the VW entrants choose to

Also, do you know when will the entry list (from mail -ins etc.) will merge with the current Sydney Dragway on-line entry list?

VWMA Editor ·

I'll only pit near Henry if his car is presentable and all the stone chips from the Portland trip are painted.😂

HS618 ·

What stone chips?

whathaveidone ·

ok im in!!! New box comes next week so, hopefully get some garage time to get it together. Just dont tell Elle

VWMA Editor ·

Excellent. And don't worry - what happens in the garage, stays in the garage!

Lawn beers & a bit of outdoor bowling I think Craig .....😂

My entry has been received for the WPVW turbo oval , but they have not read my entry correctly and put me in the 11.00-12.99 bracket on the entry list . I have emailed Sydney Dragway and they are going to fix this and put me in the 9.00-10.99 bracket for sunday . Really looking forward to running the oval against some of the front engine dragsters .... should be fun !!

Turbo66 ·

dinos pizza bug will be there

whathaveidone ·

Entered tonight, cant wait to get out there again. I know of 8 vw's now so will be a good day

Dasdubber ·

Great stuff, its shaping up to be a great day with a heap of vw's racing! 👍

ian.mezz ·

remember when you are racing , make sure that you line up next to one of the V8 or other cars NOT A VW🤪

HotRodMatt ·

Expecting the way out of date entry list to be updated some time this week.

Also, if scheduling allows, the top 16 performers from Saturday will be invited to run again on Sunday. We should know if this will be happening sometime this week.

whathaveidone ·

10 vw's entered now. does anyone know who glen willets is???? hope the rain holds off

too cranky ·

Glen has the blue v8 front engined beetle

Ollie ·

Shall be out there Saturday! Amped!

HotRodMatt ·

Stoked to see 10 dakdaks entered.
The current entrant list still isn't quite up to date. Hopefully there might be another couple in the 20 or more entries that aren't on the list.

Churchill isn't the only Top Doorslammer entered either. So those who were disappointed last weekend witht he doorslammers being postponed. You'll see the best doorslammers with pre 75 body styles at DOTD.

Entries open until Wednesday afternoon.

Hopefully a few VWs can make it into the top 16 on Saturday... and be invited back for a top 16 showdown on Sunday!

Also on Sunday there will be a HAMBster Slammer race for charity with Fabbieti, Misfud, Dupond, and Gatt at the wheel best of four rounds in the HAMBsters

This year we have done a number of things differently, with a goal of offering more to all who want to share in our event, whether that be as a racer or a spectator. A new feature we're including is the Sunday’s activities, with a number of elements to make the day special, is the “HAMBster Slammer” race.

This will be a 4 round race event featuring Fabbietti, Mifsud, Dupond and Gatt, racing HAMBsters, with a raffle for spectators to pick the winner, and go in a draw to win a limo ride to Gemelle Ristorante Italiano at Liverpool (thanks to ‘Pure Limousines’ and Sam Sofi, see websites below), with a dinner for 4 people included. The total prize value is $900.

http://www.gemelle.com.au/

http://www.purelimo.com.au/

Winner will be drawn on Sunday afternoon at time of the presentations.

Many thanks to Sean Mifsud and Sam Sofi for their support on this...

Thanks for the support guys ...we had a ball at the drags and our best run times was a 14.4 sec.....not too shabby for a 1140kg bus....Rose its still a vw too.

too cranky ·

Congratulations to Matt Sherwood and the boys and girls for organising a great event. Both days were fun with some great racing. I hope the event grows and i cant wait for the next one. It was also great to see the VWs supporting the event and upsetting some of the v8's.

The Blue & white supercharged bug did manage to get 7 passes in on Sunday. We got to see a lot more of the track than expected, It was good to see matt's reflexes haven't diminished any.

With no great ET's to mention (11.560 was the best) we got plenty of time in the car and data. A personal best mph was definitely a highlight with 128.81 mph seeing my first 200+ km/h pass.

Slowly creeping up on things and getting more comfortable in the car will get the ET's down.

A big thank you to all the guys from the CBB Racing Crew that turned up to help and support me. Its not a car that i can run by myself and your help is always appreciated.

rose ·

It's a kombi you guys are special🤪😂
Sorry I just didn't have any times that you guys did. You had a whole tribe of people there that's why I thought you guys would have plenty of people to put up your times etc

The kombi was very popular with the togs. Hope no one else got the flame out the exhaust shot that I fluked. That is one stout bus Steve.

Don't know about reflexes... I didn't move, regardless of what Rusty said over the PA. Mike does owe me a pair of undies though. Had I been standing there when the doorslammer met the wall I would have moved!

Many thanks to all the competitors and spectators. It was great to see so many VWs out there and they were very well received. Your support was much appreciated and there will continue to be an exception for German origin cars in future DOTD events (even if a few Japs did manage to sneak in).

I'm buggered... it's been a long couple of days. Some pics up soon. Once again, thank you to everyone for their support.

HotRodMatt ·

Henry... I must apologise, I was on the wrong side of the track for all your passes. I only got one across the track shot of you.

Folks... someone needs to come out and crew for Henry. It's easy to spot someone come through the tunnel ahead of the car and have some warning that it is time to swap sides.

HS618 ·

Matt,Thanks again to Joseph and yourself for allowing me to be part of a great event.
Secondly, No need to apologise regarding pictures, I've got something better than pictures and it's sitting in the garage half undressed with the rear wheels jacked up!!
As to crew, .........nah! One of the reasons for building and running the car was to give me some exercise (mental and physical) Random help?- yes.... (Thanks Macca) Organised crew? - not at this stage. The car runs so easy, crew will have nothing to do except walk through the tunnel
My demise in the 1st Round was caused by a secret squirrel issue that will be made public upon my giving up Drag Racing (something or someone went haywire)
Thanks to all the other VW's that participated - It was a fun weekend

First 1/4 mile event for me and it was a buzz. Learning a car and track for the first time at a major meet wasn't exactly easy, but Rod has his car well sorted so this made the learning curve softer.

Results:

• 1st round win and my best time for the day with a 12.23@110.66mph against a 11.75 sec Torana. My reaction time of .092 against his .329 made the difference at the line.

In the second round the car developed a mis-fire and was just pipped at the post by a Cortina on Nitrous, who eventually went through to the finals.

Thanks to Rod for letting me drive his car, and to Matt for the time and effort organising such a big event. Mmmm...a VWMA quarter mile weekend?

Not sure about big engine blows... Burgo did have one let go in the Plymouth Fury gasser, but that was just a neat little hole.

Wayne did a strong burnout, but by half track it had a lot of smoke. I've heard the clutch got fried. He's probably busy pulling and replacing it for this weekend.

pulled the engine from the oval on the tuesday night and stripped it right down , finish at 2am . Found the cam and lifters had been having a difference of opinion . Metal all through engine .
Crank linish on Wednesday and wash all parts up for reassembly on Wednesday night , finish at 2-30am .
reassemble bottom end thursday night with all new bearings , new cam , new camfollowers , new oil pump etc , finish at 1-30am .
Friday have piston ring-lands machined and assemble top-end , finish 6pm . NEVER work on a friday night , that is reserved for my Louise .
Saturday morning fit rocker gear and pushrod tubes , adjust tappets and close engine . Fit turbo system and injection , finished by midday . lunch with Louise . Saturday afternoon fit flywheel and clutch assembly , fit engine back into oval and run engine . Test drive up and down street at 7pm and pack tow vehicle for racing next day , finish 10-30pm . Dinner at Louise place at 11-30pm .
Sunday 5am start , off to DOTD 2011 . Scrutineer oval and all OK . first run , strong burnout and the oval has developed much more power than ever before.... launch from line with heaps of clutch slip , 2nd gear heaps of clutch slip . I back off in 2nd and clutch grips , stand on the throttle and it slips again , 3rd gear heaps of clutch slip and then a great loss of power and smoke .
My thoughts are that we dynoed the oval weeks ago with 15psi boost when the cam lift was very low . Now that the valves are opening fully at .550" lift the boost pressure has risen and not enough fuel has been injected to compensate . I think the engine has run lean in the top-end and may have suffered piston damage .
Before running the oval again I will strip the engine right down and inspect all parts for wear or damage , and then prepare it for its next run with a much better clutch set-up .
