the engine fitted is not the one to be used . This is the injected type-4 2842ml engine that is going back into the WPVW sports sedan . I fitted the engine to the new circuit car for measurements only .
the engine to be used in the new circuit car is the engine and transmission from my turbo oval . I will run the turbo oval in this years sport compact drag racing series and next year the engine & transmission will be fitted to the new car . This engine produced 348bhp @ the wheels with e85 fuel on just 15psi boost . Should be fun to drive !!

hypo-vw 路

fastnuf wrote:Wayne, what class can you run on the circuit, sports sedan or sports car with the centre driving position?
I will run DTTF in the sports sedan category......
I have spoken to CAMS regarding the seating position of DTTF and it does comply with the CAMS rules for sports sedans . I was fortunate on one occassion to speak directly with a tech advisor and he himself is currently building an Alfa sports sedan with centre seating position . There is nothing in the CAMS rules to state whether a sports sedan must be right-hand drive , left-hand drive or centre-steer and it is considered much safer for the driver to be seated in the centre of the car .
DTTF also has a CAMS logbook and is approved as a centre-steer sports sedan

fastnuf 路

Wayne, thanks for your reply.

not much to report on ..... I have been concentrating on the drag racing scene and have not had much time to spare to do too much on DTTF .
I have manufactured a new front air-dam and purchased a rear wing . Not yet sure if it is the style of wing that I want to use , but it will give me ideas to work with .
Soon I will start to modify (widen) the chassis area around the drivers seat to accomodate a normal size arse , not one as it was originally designed for .

my new circuit car is my next priority . I will be concentrating wholy on this car to get it up and running before starting on the drag bus .
It was just that the bus came along and I had to grab it while I had the chance and I drove to Bendigo on the weekend to collect it . Along with the drag bus will be Ben Fords' new drag car ......
I will show detailed pics over the next couple of months of the build-up / modifications on the circuit car , starting early next week . 馃憤

hypo-vw 路

Well here I go again , another mamoth project undertaken but cant wait to plant my butt in the drivers seat and stand on the 'GO FAST' pedal .
Tonight I have started on the recreation of a lost legend . DTTF is in the shop and work has commenced ...... but most importantly one small task had to be attended to first , as the first pics shows

hypo-vw 路

when towing DTTF to my shop , the front suspension rocker brackets all broke off the chassis . This is the first job to attend to , the brackets are all cleaned / repositioned and welded into place

hypo-vw 路

LH side is finished which holds the arms up much higher

colin 路

Best of luck with your new project Wayne,

will we see this car at a Hillclimb event?.

Cheers Col

vassy66T1 路

Great to see this back on track Wayne

hypo-vw 路

more progress on DTTF tonight . The right front suspension rocker brackets were welded into place and the suspension reassembled , so DTTF now sits on its own springs for the very first time .
I then drilled all the holes in the front skirts to bolt them on securely and tapped all the threads . The front end was then reassembled and headlamp decals fitted (samples only)
My seat is then stripped of its cover in preparation for installation

hypo-vw 路

all the windows are removed to protect them from grinding sparks and the top chassis bars are cut out .
I am not happy with the seating height . The fuel tank Richard had designed is under the drivers seat with a protective firewall between the tank and the driver , but with the tank under the seat the drivers seat sits way too high and my helmet would hit the top rollcage hoops . The fuel tank has to go !! I will fit a fuel cell under the front hood area as I did with my blue WPVW sports sedan . This will allow me to cut out a couple of more bars , drop the seat down approx. 4" and then weld back in the chassis bars required .

hypo-vw 路

coletrickle wrote:Looking sweet wayne, any plans for an under tray/diffuser? looks fast enough to warrant 1.
yes Col , I will be running an undertray to prevent air turbulance under the front hood area and to streamline the undercarriage

hypo-vw 路

colin wrote:Best of luck with your new project Wayne,

Cheers Col
yes Col , depending on tracks as the car will be quite low . Bathust definately , and I am aware of the Australian Hillclimb championships being held this year at Mt Panorama , Bathurst November 2nd-4th 馃憤

hypo-vw 路

more progress today on DTTF . after fitting the front undercarriage tray to take some pics , I removed the entire floor panel , removed the body from the chassis , removed the fuel tank , cut out several chassis bars , fitted my seat in to check heights and welded some temporary bars in so that the chassis would not bend

hypo-vw 路

lifting the body from the chassis

hypo-vw 路

removing the fuel tank . the tank had to be dropped down through the floor due to the design of it .
after the tank was removed I cut out several chassis bars . with the seat now sitting lower , the seat belt anchorages will also have to be relocated as they now sit way too high .
strengthening bars are welded into the chassis under the steering frame assembly to support it

hypo-vw 路

temporary top chassis bars are welded in place to ensure the chassis does not bend .
the body is then fitted back onto the chassis and the seating position is much better ....

cnfabo 路

looking good wayne....i can not wait to see this flying around the track..its a shame it got left so long not in use....not sure if you have already said but what engine combo will you be running....i see a mock up type 4....

hypo-vw 路

the plan for this car is to run a modified type-1 tranny with 930 Porsche CV axles and quaife LSD .

hypo-vw 路

today the 930 Porsche CV race axle kit arrived .
4x race clearanced 930 CV joints , 2x chromoly axles , 4x CV boots , 4x CV boot flanges , 24x h/duty Cv bolts , circlips & grease .
Also the Porsche 930 rear stub axles have arrived .
All looks great and will be back onto the car Monday night next week as I am concentrating on the oval for the next couple of days to get it to the Sydney Jamboree

RISKY4LIFE 路

great work! the drive shafts look so sweet !!!
i need more money 馃檨

tar76 路

Keep it up Wayne, very cool 馃憤

hypo-vw 路

spent some more time on DTTF today . I removed the body from the chassis once again , and started work on the chassis top rails .
I manufactured the new top rails and closed in the ends on all cut chassis members .
I then aligned the cut chassis rails and welded the new ones into place .
The seat was then fitted with the upper support bracket and put into position (chocked with temporary timber supports) to establish the correct height prior to manufacturing seat mountings .
After the seat mountings are manufactured and fitted , some additional chassis support bars will be added to strengthen the new top rails .

hypo-vw 路

I fitted the quick release hub to the steering wheel and column . This makes it so much easier to get in and out of the car now

hypo-vw 路

next I start to manufacture some seat supports and mounting brackets for the seat . Then the seat is mounted to the chassis

hypo-vw 路

I then manufacture the seat belt anchorages for the crotch-strap and the 2x shoulder-straps for the 3" 5-point racing harness

hypo-vw 路

now the Porsche CV flange stub axles are fitted and the cv joints & axles are prepared for pre-assembly

hypo-vw 路

an IRS transmission is fitted with the Porsche CV flanges and is fitted to the chassis .
A new front transmission mounting is made from aluminum

hypo-vw 路

the new chromoly race axles are cut to length and the CV joints fitted .
check out the angle that the axles run at with the engine & tranny pushed a massive 6" forward
the next job is the gearshift . I have opted for a left hand gear change as I feel a lot more comfortable shifting gears with my left hand
A type-3 gearshift plate is used with a cut-down shift rod and modified gearlinkages with precision uni-joints

whathaveidone 路

those axles are on 1 hell of an angle!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hypo-vw 路

gearshift nearly completed , seat mounted ,belt anchorages mounted , transmission mounted , axles installed . Now I have to put it back together and pack it away till tomorrow night

nbturbo 路

I see what you mean about the drive shafts-you still have at least another 50mm to work with. Shorts and white socks is a bit risky while you are fabricating. Do you ever get time to sleep? Great to see DTTF back on track.

new 11litre alloy polished fuel cell , alloy polished 2litre surge tank , aeromotive fuel pump , aeromotive stainless steel 100micron fuel filter

hypo-vw 路

aeromotive fuel pressure regulator , turbosmart blow-off valve , 5-point race harness seat belt , seat belt clip-in kit so that the belt can be removed easily

hypo-vw 路

battery box , gel light-weight race battery , dry-sump oil tank kit , autocraft dry sump oil pump

hypo-vw 路

new billet polished pedal assembly , polished master cylinders for both the brake and hydraulic clutch , clutch hydraulic line kit , billet clutch slave cylinder

hypo-vw 路

more progress as the oil tank and battery box are fitted into place prior to fitting the dry sump oil pump to the engine

hypo-vw 路

the new quaife LSD to suit type-1 IRS transmission using 002 bus drive flanges has also arrived , along with the chromoly 002 drive flanges for 930 Porsche CV joint , also 13mm rear wheel spacers

hypo-vw 路

Berg heavy-duty pinion bearing retainer and 20 new genuine Porsche alloy wheel nuts

hypo-vw 路

I have also decided to fit a set of on-board airjacks as the bug will be so low and the alloy composite floor fragile that it would be hard to jack up .

the jacks that I have purchased have 230mm of lift and will lift the bug approx 150mm off the ground

hypo-vw 路

fibreglass engine lid with rear apron and rear carbon-fibre bumper have arrived

nbturbo 路

Some good stuff amongst that lot Wayne. That fuel tank looks very much like the one I bought (Procomp from memory) Just have a look at the cap and see if it seals properly when closed.Mine looked OK,but I could lift it off the seat when it was locked tight. They sent me a new cap,but it was no better,so they ended up sending me a complete new assembly ( I think it was a JAZ filler )The holes were very close-just redrilled the tank slightly bigger.I have now decided that I won't use it any way-going to make an ally extension filler neck with a threaded ally cap.It will poke through the top of the ute lid.Love what is happening with DTTF with WP.

20bkombi 路

Looking good Wayne, getting closer. Gota love all those new parts to mount.
You'll love the Quaife, i have one in the my kombi ,(porshe 6spd) it made a huge difference even on the street, will be awesome on the track!!
You can tighten then up to your liking too.

Man you have gone all out, love it.馃榾

hypo-vw 路

I have now made a start on the rear body supports , manufacturing bars from the alloy rear bumper support back to the chassis . I have also fitted the correct heads with exhaust tubes so that I can be sure that the rear supports clear them and I can start to manufacture the turbo plumbing etc

nbturbo 路

Just spotted the air cylinders.Seriously thought about 2 on the back of my car so it could be run in the pits. From the figures you quoted, the cylinders will only be 80mm from the track surface-is that about right? You would have to put a pad under them if the pits were only grass or dirt. Were they very expensive?

hypo-vw 路

nbturbo wrote:the cylinders will only be 80mm from the track surface-is that about right?
Were they very expensive?
that is right Gary . By the CAMS rulebook , no part of a sports sedan shall be any closer to the ground than 40mm . I do not plan to go quite that low but if I can get the lowest part of the car to approx 60mm , this should place the air-jacks at approx 75mm from the ground .

I found them at Ksport-USA and they were $1580 delivered to my doorstep for the set of 4 . Not cheap but a really good quality product and it is going to make life much easier for me at the track with them onboard .

vassy66T1 路

Looking very tidy Wayne

I can see lots of thought going into the placement of everything. 馃憤

hypo-vw 路

more progress on DTTF over the past couple of days
the carbon fibre rear bumper has been fitted and the body support bars have been manufactured at the rear

the large muffler that I am going to use is fitted and exhaust stubs are bolted to the engine pipes

hypo-vw 路

a outlet hole has been cut in the rh rear guard for the exhaust tailpipe

fuel cell and surge tank are placed in the front of DTTF to assess where they should be mounted

hypo-vw 路

the manufacture of the turbo system for DTTF . I found the best location for the turbo was on the left side of the engine bay . The turbo and all plumbing fit inside the engine lid

I am using the Garrett T-60 turbo that I recently removed from my oval . It will be fitted with a turbo bag to reduce heat radiation around the distributor area . The T-60 turbo has a split type exhaust housing , so I have married 1&3 to one side and 2&4 to the other side for quicker spool-up

hypo-vw 路

the muffler has been cut away at the rear for exhaust pipe clearance . this will be boxed in .

with the engine lid and rear apron fitted , all engine and turbo system components fit inside the engine bay

thanks for the kind words Gary , however I would have to disagree ..... I do not consider myself to be in the same category as our true legends of VW like Pete Keegan , Ross Freestone , Greg Mackie and Tony Thornton .....
what all these guys have done and achieved inspire me greatly , I am just a dude that loves to help others achieve their dreams and I spend many hours and late nights at WPVW working towards this for them and me

Lachlan VL 路

馃憤well said very kind words

hypo-vw 路

Well !! after all those months of preparation on our cars for the VW drags , I finally have found some spare time to get back into the new circuit car .

I have added 6 new aluminum support bars to the front body panel area (my aluminum welding is still crap , but improving) , positioned & mounted the radiator for the intercooler

hypo-vw 路

I have installed all of the internal body tin that insulates / protects me & my legs from the outside dangers , removed the single CNC brake pedal assembly with dual master cylinders , then positioned the new pedal assembly to check clearances .
I find that the pedal assembly has to be offset to the left approx. 2" so that the accelerator pedal will fit .
I cut the pedal mounting out of the chassis & it is clearly evident that the brake pedal on the new pedal assembly is offset to the right side

Craig Torrens 路

Great to see progress is being made馃憤

hypo-vw 路

I mount the new pedal assembly to the modified pedal mounting plate , tach weld it in position so that the brake reserviors are just 10mm from the front firewall plate

hypo-vw 路

sitting in the beetle , I can easliy operate the clutch & brake pedals with plenty of room to install a modified accelerator pedal . As the chassis tapers to a narrower front , the accelerator pedal that came with the pedal assembly will have to be modified so that it does not strike the side panel

hypo-vw 路

I have also done more work in the rear of the beetle with modification of the internal sealing panels as a couple of them would no longer fit after I had widened the chassis at the seating area

hypo-vw 路

The new mounting brackets have arrived for the on-board air-jacks .

I then remove the front air-dam , front skirt assemblies so that I can gain access to the chassis area easily , to install the front air-jacks

hypo-vw 路

I measure & position the air-jacks where I want them mounted , tach-weld the mounting plates to the chassis , remove the air-jacks & weld the plates fully

Ben Ford & I applied 100psi of air pressure to the 2 front air-jacks after installation & the front tyres lifted 4" off the ground ...... very happy with that 馃憤

hypo-vw 路

the new accelerator pedal has been modified & installed

hypo-vw 路

thats enough playing on the computer tonight !! I am going to install the fuel tank & the water tank (for the intercooler) tonight馃お馃お

hypo-vw 路

well I did stay back at WPVW late on thursday night to get the tanks mounted in the front of the new circuit car

hypo-vw 路

with the fuel tank & water tank installed , I now have to fabricate support brackets from the mounting plate to the chassis . I will then start to mount the fuel pumps & surge tank etc

hypo-vw 路

I install an additional brake fluid reservoir which will feed the brake fluid to the 2 master cylinders . This will enable me to keep a check on the fluid level without having to disassemble any of the car to get to the master cylinders on the pedal assembly .

I then fabricate a mounting plate for the fuel surge tank , EFI fuel pump & Carter lift pump

hypo-vw 路

the internal rear panels had to be cut to enable correct fitment , I add an aluminum support plate where they were cut

hypo-vw 路

new front & rear cross-drilled discs are purchased in Chevy/Porsche pattern . All new wheel bearings are installed . Rear wheel spacers in 12mm are also purchased

hypo-vw 路

all of the brake discs are installed . New titanium wheel studs are installed also

hypo-vw 路

all of the rear panels are secured down

What calipers are you going to use..

hypo-vw 路

cnfabo wrote:What calipers are you going to use..
the front calipers are alloy Brembo from an early 911 Porsche & the rear calipers are going to be standard superbug twin-pin

I split the front alloy Brembo calipers to remove the bakelite spacer blocks so that I can use them on the solid discs , as these calipers were traditionally used on ventilated discs . It is a very good thing that I did pull them apart as the person who assembled them had pinched one of the seals & they would have certainly leaked

the alloy Bremo calipers are installed and fit perfectly with the solid front brake discs . These calipers bolt directly to the type-3 stub-axle assemblies without any adaptor plates

Awesome to see the Dak to the future Dub come together finally... Looking forward to seeing how it goes in the roundy, roundy stuff.

yeh I know Simon , I have been a bit slack with this one as I have been very busy helping Ben , Chris & Cindy with their cars and also the new engine build for the oval (not to mention a long pointy thing that arrived from US) ..... I should have had this car on the track long before now , but it wont be too far away . I am nearly ready to strip the entire car for powdercoating / detailing , then back together it goes for the final build .

I don't think you have been slack Wayne!!!
Good output coming from your workshop. 馃憤

Thanks Marcus , we are now preparing Ben Ford' supercharged drag bug for Warwick while I am working on DTTF ..... Bens bug made 332hp@ 4500rpm at the wheels and wont breath after that . We are remaking his supercharger manifolds for better flow ..... but I want to stay working on DTTF until it makes noise and is finally on the track !!
Last night Dean & I sorted out what fuel fittings & hose we need up front , I then installed the clutch slave cylinder , then installed the new turbo ready for exhaust connection

hypo-vw 路

I have done more work on DTTF . The hydraulic clutch slave cylinder has been installed ..... the new T-70 turbo is installed with the exhaust flange ring & clamp

hypo-vw 路

I purchase 2x 4" mandrel bends and a 4" to 3" reducer for the exhaust pipe from turbo to muffler . Here the new 4" mandrels are pictured beside a 2.5" alloy 90degree mandrel to show their massive size . A new flange plate is bolted to the muffler

hypo-vw 路

the fabrication of the exhaust continues with the attachment of the reducer pipe to the exhaust flange

hypo-vw 路

the exhaust is connected from the turbo to the muffler , next I will have to fabricate the wastegate plumbing

great stuff Wayne. can't wait till Nationals next May as this is when you seem to unviel new cars.

By the way, my old man built RH a trailer for this car back in 1998-9 so have a keen interest to see this finished and going.

Thank you so much for sharing just how much work goes into preparing a car like this. It's an overwhelming task! Best of luck in getting it ready on time. I look forward to some footage of it running.

"Future" is just an expression
