Phill's Baja

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/88667/phills-baja

matberry ·

Here's a few pics of a baja project we have underway.

matberry ·

front end support

11CAB ·

Make sure he steers clear of trees this time...... :p

vwsteve ·

is that the old yellow beast?

looks like phill and nills can compare mods soon

matberry ·

Plan is to go around trees this time G

Not much of the yellow beast lives on Steve.

This was started as the replacement baja before he crashed the yellow car.....

This is my normal ''tough' street baja style.

I'll try for some new pics today

matberry ·

More pics from today.
Things are starting to take shape. 🙂

Smiley ·

Looking very good!

Not running a body lift?

Smiley 😎

baghall ·

Look forward to following this build. Nice barwork.

philsmanx ·

wont need a lift kit as for comparisons to other bajas youd need to see matts work b4 any comparison hoping to keep the weight to a minimum, and this time its gonna need to be a damn big tree lol: getting very excited

11CAB ·

No windows huh?

matberry ·

No windows.......

I can't wait to see Matt's work.

Hurry Matt, more pictures!!!!

baghall ·

Is this to be road registerable or pure off road?

11CAB ·

matberry wrote:Plan is to go around trees this time G
Its much more fun to play where there arent any trees to worry about..... 😎

philsmanx ·

ahh rest in pieces poor old girl yes no windows have you weighed the glass and assocated parts talk about biggest loser just dropped kilos🥷 and yes its already registered thanks

philsmanx ·

wasnt the trees fault i over lubricated🤓

matberry ·

Here's some more pics guys

philsmanx ·

got busy this arvo then 😁😁😁 cant wait now

matberry ·

Hey Phill, about time you update that sig line hey???😂

Bolted a few panels on this arvo, looks like a car again. 👍

philsmanx ·

cant remember how lol

philsmanx ·

no pics of bottom keepin that under ur hat😏

matberry ·

So....yellow guards?

Try user CP up the top right where you log in/out, there you can edit the signature line

matberry ·

OK, here's the bottom.

With this lower chassis rail design we have named the rails 'Phillbars'

They are tied into the front end braces and chassis/body bolts, then pickup both roll cage A and B pillar footplates and finally into the torsion housing at the rear. Very happy with the simple yet stiff design, and Westi, boxcar Willie has left the station!!!

Smiley ·

Looking great! Keep the updates and pictures coming!!

Smiley 😎

matberry ·

Here you go Smiley....today's progress...front bar

philsmanx ·

anyone want these tyres n wheels going at a reasonable price 15 rears 14 fronts

Aussie Dubbin ·

Sweet tough setup. Nice skills

OZ Towdster ·

Mat & Phil ,
Don't get me wrong as i'mm lovin your work but the back top corners of the doors and pillars would look a hole lot nicer if the lines flowed through with the radius

Andrew

Ha Ha Ha Andrew...I've been saying that and complaining generally about the lines of the chop since we started the build. We have radiused the rear corners of the cut, you should have seen it before...radius door tops, square edge through the B pillar, radius along the old rear side window, square through the C pillar, radius of the rear .... man O man, the joys of a can opener, and this one was done pretty well !!! I also proposed a cab look alike windscreen frame, but as you can understand, compromises must be made and $$ spent have to be shared around. 😬

bugboymatt ·

Just a bit of fabrication hey guys !

Looking good, be good to see the end result. Guessing this gonna be EJ25 powered by ya sig line !

matberry ·

bugboymatt wrote:. Guessing this gonna be EJ25 powered by ya sig line !
You'd be guessing right, Bugboymatt

Here's Phill actually doing something.....I had told him 'if he wanted that Subi thingy in the back he had to do it himself'😂😂😂

Desert Moose ·

this is a nice looking jigger...😎

matberry ·

Cheers Moose, plenty more to do yet, but certainly taking shape. 🙂

nils ·

matt, I got mad deja vu just looking at those photos.

If there was one mod I would really love to do it would be a vert top, heaps jealious 😉

philsmanx ·

dyin to go for a test bash with ur rig should be fun nils

nils ·

phil - I just noticed you're on the sunny coast. Bad news is I'm now in wagga for a year and a bit.😢
After that williamtown (near stockton) and I too will be hitting the EJ25 bandwagon, Whats your expected rebuild time?

philsmanx ·

hopin 4 may but we all like to dream lol

philsmanx ·

now runnin 2 businesses so little tim e 4 me damn it

Brad ·

Sweet work guys, is that Crazy Col I see in one of those pictures ?

I am a little confussed though .... correct me if I am wrong but you are worried about weight so you have taken the doors off and removed the windows, removed the roof and then added more weight through barwork than you ever removed.

If you are after a VW with no roof or windows then wouldn't building a buggy have been a better option ?

bajachris88 ·

the centre of gravity would have moved down a bit 👍

philsmanx ·

yeah if id wanted a buggy prob would have built 1 or finished my last but i prefer a baja and without all the barwork i could end up dead in an accident horses for courses mate

matberry ·

IMO even a buggy needs the barwork. Even in the 1950's the beetle pan's frame head was getting cracked and broken when used on 'normal' roads with a stock car. Plus as Chris said, lower c of g and STRONG, and who cares what body is around it, it's a VW underneath and it'll go better than most 4wd's with a fun factor of around a million 🙂.

matberry ·

A little progress at both ends of this baja

Finished front bumper sorry for the blurry pic

Began on rear cage and exhaust.
For the exhaust, we started with the Subi stubs, cut and shortened them, then with some pipe and an exhaust donut fabbed the pipes.
They say a good exhaust doesn't help a cracker on an EJ25, but we went with a nice flowing simple design that is light an has plenty of ground clearance. The stock Subi sump has to go

mactaylor ·

no rego?

matberry ·

No, rego.

philsmanx ·

what about a pic from the back ,whos that the fun police

matberry ·

Rear bar in progress

Ended up with a nice departure angle, and don't tell Phill, but I think a VW powerplant will still fit 🙂

Cage attaches to rear trans mount. Tempory M18 bolts fitted atm.

The sump will definately be getting shortened. I thought the cast alloy one looked good, but it is only 50mm shorter and we need around 70mm minimum. Also plan to relocate oil filter or just get Phill to do his own servicing as the cage will need to be removed to change the oil filter if we don't relocate it. Actually.....I forgot, being a Subi engine, arn't they cheaper to replace than service.....might leave the filter where it is..😂😂

philsmanx ·

can i come up early tomorrow

matberry ·

Yeah man, your shout for breaky.

Hope you got those parts we ordered.

63baja ·

👍 Awesome looking machine Phil is it up and running yet?
The cage looks the business and I love the idea of the barwork under the body mounts
that was were I ran the stainless radiator tubing in the last one I built
With yours already being registered with so many mods do you get any curry from the law? particularly being on the coast
I have QT paperwork for mine and I was looking at doing the full front cut with one piece front end
Is your tank still up front

mlc baja ·

Cool , I am also building a EJ25 baja nice to see your work.

here's my progress http://dunebuggyandbajaadventures.freeforums.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1725

mactaylor ·

gday mat did you make those gearbox mounts they look nice!

Baja Dan ·

Hi Phil. What size, brand and type are those tyres on the front. They look exactly what I am after. Thanks

ancientbugger ·

Anymore photos of the progress?

baghall ·

Soo with the front bar it looks like you might be planning on recovering some 4x4s with a winch.😂😂

matberry ·

Not much progress for update pics lately.

The trans mount is a 10* kit from Parts Unlimited. I usually make my own, but with the dollar so good, the whole kit is great value and a nice product.

The front tyres are only 14" but are a nice agressive tread. An x rally tyre so the tread is nice and agressive. They are 4 sale with the 5 spoke wheels, PM Phillsmanx if your interested.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Needs bigger tyres Matt!! But then again the suby prolly wouldn't have the grunt to push them like the Volksy would!!! 😂

63baja ·

Are the wheels stil for sale???

Jade

matberry ·

Yep, the white spoke wide 5's are for sale. fronts are 14's , rears are 15's.

Can get details if your interested.

63baja ·

Yeah thanks for that Matt,
I am selling a bit of gear of my own, so should have a bit of spare cash very shortly.
Are they a wheel tyre combo or just wheels?
Are they in good nik with no buckles or warping?
And of course The $$$ value
Also Matt, I've been told you might be the man to talk to about getting hold of
a one piece fibreglass front end for the new Baja project
let me know
Jade

volk hogan ·

great work mate..😬
