Well this year will see rosie with a new interior so I am planning what else I'd like to have done.
I will eventually respray the car but not for a few years. I would like to increase the power of the 1600 TP and have my engine rebuilt rather than replace it. It runs well and hasnt had any issues however I'd like a little more power on take off. Maybe increase HP from around 45hp to 80hp. I am not looking for a race car just something to drive on weekends with a little more grunt.
From what i have read the fist things i should do are
1. Replace the existing cam with a larger one
2. Twin IDF carbys 36?
3. Replace the standard exhaust
4. Powder coat the tinware
Is there any other modification i should consider, i am thinking of a budget of around 4 to 5K
Any advice would be much appreciated
johny rotten ·
1. increase the capacity
2. use a standard cam and standard carb
or
use dual webers , increase the comp ratio , replace cam , improve cooling.
A good 1770cc costs around 5K
Bizarre ·
I agree with Johnny's advice
a 1776/1916 with mild cam, carb and exhaust gives about 25% increase in power and is nice and torquey.
I had a 1916 like this for about 5 years and was a lovely daily
A stock 1600 with exhaust and dual carbs would be very similar but duals are more work than a single
After that it is a matter of how far you want to go
read the ac.net tech articles as well
Paulc1964au ·
I am a little confused so to get more capacity it's basically replacing the existing engine? Or increasing my engines capacity
hellbugged ·
increase capicity just bore the case and heads to fit bigger cylinders and pistons......best power increase if engine is coming apart anyhow.
benefits of new rings comes with it
doesn't cost much for the machining, send it up to pobjoy or the dudes in sydney would get it done for around $200
thing is Rod could probably set you up with a complete engine for your budget
Yes thats my other option to get one from Rod as I know he has lots laying around lol. I will be taking the car down to him later this year for a new interior.

hey Paul, a 1776 with higher comp, bigger heads and twin 40-44idfs with a custom tune, 110 engle cam, ratio rockers and a 1 1/2 inch extractors will give u the performance gain u want :P could get that done for ur 5k budget.... 🤓 a 1916 would be a little more power but with a 1776 it would be a little more safer cooling wise if u dont wanna go an external cooler.... i had 86.5hp at the wheels on my 1776 with 48 idfs and a 1 5/8 exhaust.... but to be honest the carbs and exhaust were too big for it... the 1776 would give u real nice torque without going too silly.... cheers adam
Paulc1964au ·
Adam,
would you use my existing engine or are you suggesting a whole new one?
polak ·
u could use ur existing case and possibly the crank depending on its condition.... ( if it needs it, it can be re-ground, but for i wouldnt put anything in over a 1st grind if u want to be able to have some fun and have it be reliable) but heads, cam, pushrods, rockers, head studs and bearings would be new, no point or worth the risk using an old bottom end when ur going to pull it apart..... u wouldnt know untill u pull it down but after u check all the parts and clearances u would know how much of it u can use.... if its the original case and it hasnt been tunnel bored u would be fine using the case and crank, either that or u could use a german counterwieghted crank.... nice addition esp if u get the rolling assembly balanced.... standard rods would be fine too... but like i said new bearings would be advisable if ur going that far...
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks Adam we will talk about it more in the future i'm sure but as you said a 1776 seems to be the way to go for what i want, keep an eye our for carbys etc lol
polak ·
no worries Paul, let we know when ur ready, ill start getting things sorted then... biggest expense will be carbys by far, the rest is easy.... have a good one... cheers adam

Powder coasting the tinware gives a 15% HP increses straight up =p

Yes and another 15% for all the other shiny bits

ok so getting closer to my engine build here is what i have purchased so far
New As41 case bored for 1776
mohle 90 mm pistons
New heads port and polished
engle 110 cam
8 dowel counterwieghted crank
SCAT oil reservoir
Twin Delorto 40's
Still to purchase
Distributor - probably a magnaspark digital
Alternator - 55 amp
lightened flywheel
Vintage speed exhaust
New clutch and pressure plate
Starter motor
Gauges - tacho, oil temp and oil pressure
Tin ware - although may use my existing tinware
BiX ·
I will recomend a 1776 like your building.
I had a great little 1776cc motor but with a W100 cam, was a great little torquey motor with a resonable amount of power.
Paulc1964au ·
Other than CP1 anybody know where i can purchase a magna digital distributor for a good price?
Paulc1964au ·
Whats the best painted or powder coated tinware?
Craig Torrens ·
depends on your budget and skill level.........powder coating is probably the most durable 😉
ian.mezz ·
I think that you can get a higher amp alternator , think 75
you dont need a lighten flywheel on a street ccar.
comufire coil pak jobby works well , givees you spark like a commodore.
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks guys for the advice I have a friend who has his own spray shop so i may go to him otherwise ill see about powder coating.
Thanks ian will stick with a standard
snitz ·
Cb Performance sell the Magnaspark digital dizzy aswell but they are probably more for freight than CIP1.I run the Compufire set up on the wifes beetle and have been very happy with it.Wassim @ VOLLKS would be the cheapest if you went the Compufire Direct fire setup. The leads are too long..cheap and generic for my liking so I bought MSD SuperConductor lead by the length and made my own.You can view my wifes beetle build up thread to get an idea of the setup if you go the Compufire setup..Either way still love your beetle and good luck with the new donk!.😎

the better alternator helps run all those extra lights and gauges , CD , ignition, etc
A standard type vw clutch kit is all you need to , I think they called sachs ?
The other issue I am trying to resolve is I want a tacho, oil temp and oil pressure gauges just not sure what type of array I should purchase and where to mount them?
Paulc1964au wrote:The other issue I am trying to resolve is I want a tacho, oil temp and oil pressure gauges just not sure what type of array I should purchase and where to mount them?
Here ya go Paul.....let me know if you want one and I will do you a special price 😎
thanks Ian probably want the tacho less noticeable
Craig will keep that in mind it would be perfect for the oil etc still need a mounting for a tacho
Craig Torrens ·
you can buy a 52mm VDO tacho that fits into the hole.........so you can have a oil temp, pressure and tacho in the plate.👍
Paulc1964au ·
Craig what about a bracket to mount a monster tacho?
snitz ·
Another option for a tacho is an Ultralight series which is 3"3/8ths.I bought this size for my wifes beetle as a Procomp Monster tach is too big for a beetle dash in my opinion..
Food for thought!..
Paulc1964au ·
thanks Snitz i do like the monster tacho though 🙂
snitz ·
Vintage speed do a tacho mount for monster tachos..and I believe from looking on Vintage Speeds' website, Vintage Vee Dub are the Australian stockists.

Paulc1964au wrote:thanks Ian probably want the tacho less noticeable

ITS a bit had to make a tacho not so noticeable , because then its hard to see when your driving.😊

Very true i bought a monster tacho 8000 rpm so will see where i can install it
snitz ·
Either on top of the dash or underneath..doesn't matter really..Previous experience tells me any autometer tacho with a shift-lite tells you when to shift anyway..especially when your whole cabin is lit up!!.
Craig Torrens ·
The monster tacho in the ragtop is installed under the ash tray....seems to be ok there👍
Paulc1964au ·
Ok there is a great deal of debate about tinware, should I re use tinware of my existing engine or do i buy new? If the answer is new where can i get the best quality tinware from?
matberry ·
I use German when ever possible, no new tinware fits, Scat seems better than most, but it all will need a tweek or more.
Paulc1964au ·
matberry wrote:I use German when ever possible, no new tinware fits, Scat seems better than most, but it all will need a tweek or more.
Thanks Mat so I will use the original tinware of my engine
Paulc1964au ·
Ok getting close to ordering final parts for the engine. what clutch do you recommend?
I am thinking of a Kennedy stage 1 plate with a standard disc?
JonR356 ·
For what it's worth I've seen you drive Paul, and it's like 'Driving Miss Daisy'.
So I'd also be interested in people's thoughts on if you could get away with a standard plate and disc. Stage 1 isn't too heavy, might be 'cheap insurance'
Picked up a set of near new Delorto 40's for my 1776, they came out of a 1916 with the following size venturi and jets
venturi 34 and jets 140
After doing some research it seems to me they are a little large for a 1776 street car. Based on what I have read it would be more suited to changed out the venturi to 32 and the jets to 132
Any comments?
Paulc1964au ·
looking at the following schemes for the new engine
I am thinking of matching the tinware to my interior
SuperOwen ·
satin black or powder coated to match your body colour gets my vote.
benny_acko ·
2nd engine down looks the goods!
AUSSIE_MICK ·
3rd engine, gloss black is very nice
sander288 ·
where's Lee's engine?
Paulc1964au ·
CB Performance parts arrived yesterday still waiting on aircooled to complete the second order. Once it has all arrived I will take a photo.
At this stage i do like the second engine but will wait till all the parts arrive to see which way to go.
sander do you have a photo of Lee's engine
69bug ·
2nd photo down!
Also I have just purchased at Berg pulley as I am staying in California,
Cannot recommend enough is a beautiful piece and would definitely make an engine bay
Paulc1964au ·
Engine is getting close just need to buy the exhaust then it's of too CBB for the build
Paulc1964au ·
Quick question should I go with the existing mechanical fuel pump or go with a electric fuel pump?
Bizarre ·
Mechanical is good enough
Dont complicate things
Paulc1964au ·
Almost ready to go with the engine build, I have been advised I need to buy a 36hp fan shroud rather than my square one. Is this because of space issue running twin delortos?
Bizarre ·
I run a stock shroud and an running twin Dellortos
Paulc1964au ·
After receiving a number of quotes i ended up giving the build to Vintage Vw and they have been excellent, sending me photos and regular updates. The engine assembly is now complete and the engine has been fired up. Just waiting on Boris to have some workshop space to take my car.
The photos here show assembly with the temp dizzy and exhaust for the test runs. i will be installed a vintage speed exhaust and Mallory dizzy.
Tinware was imported from USA witha SCAt 36hp doghouse cooler and restored german tinware then powedercoated
While Boris has the car I will also be having the following work
Replacement of fuel line, brake line, accelerator and clutch cables.
Installation of Tacho, oil pressure, oil temp and head temp gauges
matberry ·
Looks good, the guys at Vintage are onto it 🙂
vassy66T1 ·
Looks sweet as 🙂

How did you with the 1776?
Have you had it dyno'd? What sort of HP / Torque are you getting?
Did you make any gearbox mod's?
I am planning out my engine at the moment and I would like to know your thoughts, 1 year on.
Cheers,
John
Paulc1964au ·
John,
No dyno as yet but love the 1776, no mods to gearbox but so far no issues. Engine has had first service but still running in.
Some thing a learnt, what ever budget you have in your head double it. Don't cut corners on using Chinese replicas pay extra for either original German bearings or use reputable companies.
As for torque it has good low down torque which I what I wanted but nice smooth acceleration as well
Go with a good exhaust, I went with vintage speed it sounds awesome and perfect for a 1776,
