Micks budget drag car build.... on the move again.

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/89664/micks-budget-drag-car-build-on-the-move-again

1916baja ·

Hi guys,

Like alot of people on here, i was bitten by the VW drag racing bug at my first warwick! I raced my blue baja for 2 years and then decided i was gonna build something especially for drag racing. My only problem is cash.... So instead of writing it off as something i will never do, i did it anyway.... Only i am doing it "low budget". I'll put some pics up and explain where it started and where it is now at. Here Goes.....

Basically i bought a 1970 beetle complete for 180 bucks! got it running, checked the gearbox worked and then it sat at Dave richardsons house for i guess around 6 months until i made some space and bought it home, stripped it, sold the engine and interior. It seemed almost rust free until i started poking it with a screw driver! after a few rust repairs this is it.😂

1916baja ·

First thing i did was strip all the running gear, suspension interior, brakes, windows,doors... everything.

I sold the Baja to fund engine and gearbox as i knew that would be the most expensive part!

The gearbox was sent off to Dave Butler for a super diff and heavyduty sideplate, he also put some longer studs in for an intermediate mount.

1916baja ·

Next, i stripped the front beam and took it to Drag-tec customs to get the adjusters fitted. He is a young fella running his own custom shop out of his parents shed! He is really good at what he does.... He has put a few dubs on airbags including his own and he mainly builds competition 4X4's, the kind that climb up almost vertical hills. He is very good on price too!

1916baja ·

I then sort of ran out of time for a few months to actually work on the car, but this didn't mean i couldn't gather parts! I managed to pick up a fixed back racing bucket from the valla swap meet already on the runners i need and off set to one side, so i'm sitting directly in front of the pedals, I got a scat drag fast shifter, and a few other things. I then met Sides.... He informed me he had some engine parts and an interior in a ghia that need doing and a deal was struck! (i'm an upholsterer/motor trimmer by trade) CB 044 heads,44idf webbers, conrods, lifters, cam, rockers, heaps of goodies!

1916baja ·

I then found Vee dub parts unlimited..... Look out bank account! I pretty much bought everthing else required to complete the build from them, Postage was 5 days from the states! Here is rough specs on the engine we are bulding, Dave Richardson (Davobuggy1641) is responsible for this part! With the parts i aquired we could build a good 1916,

really good brazilian as41 case tapped for fullflow
CB 8 dowell C/W forged crank
CB lightweight flywheel
148a tighe regrind cam
CB 044 heads 40x35 (DB is currently doing some combustion chamber work and flycutting for 10:1 compression)
Malhe 94mm P&B's
Stock rods (shot peened and balanced)
CB cromo pushrods
CB cromo headstuds
Stock rockers set up by stan pobjoy
44idf webbers
Pertronix billet dizzy with ignitor2 system
Pertronix digital rev limiter
CB thin line sump
kennedy stage1 pressure plate with daikin disc.
Exhaust is a 1 5/8 SS merged header by westy.

The engine is getting fully balanced at crankshaft engineering.

While this is obviously not a serious drag motor it should do the trick and keep me entertained for quite a while. Will be looking into the possibility of doing a draw through turbo set up in the future.

1916baja ·

Ignition! and i managed to find all the gauges i need in Autometer for a bargain!

1916baja ·

And this is where i'm at now! Making a roll cage and tieing it into the frame horns to try to stop wheel hop.... I got the main hoop from Dave Richardson out of the buggy i sold him, wich is now his drag buggy... Extended it at the bottom and constructed some box sections where it attaches to the pan and body, i also made the bars that go to the rear luggage area where plates are bolted through to the frame horn braces (yet to be made). I am only tacking the cage together, i'll be employing the help of someone with more welding experience to weld it all up! I'll keep this updated from now on, If anyone one is interested.....
Mick.

modnrod ·

Holy crap man, the drag bug has bit hard, selling the Baja?!?!?! You got it bad.......😂

When you get around to draw-through, or sorry , IF (yeah, right!), consider using something easy to tune first up on low boost, that you can get cheap at the wreckers.
Just as an aside, draw-through drag-bikes are running easy 250-300rwhp using 40-45mm single bike carbs, like the Keihin FCR or Mikuni TM models. Just remember to keep your fuel pressure a bit low, like 3psi. Cheap as chips if you wait, and HP is HP, the carb doesn't care.

Have fun man!

1916baja ·

The baja had to go anyway, I have a baby on the way and needed to get a grown ups car! the turbo set up won't happen for quite some time.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

bout time you started this thread!!

1916baja ·

bout time you went to work slacker!

Aussie Dubbin ·

Great work man, like to see the progress and gets us back in ine to do ours too.
Cheers

OZ Towdster ·

Mick , i understand you have a budget , but please , if your gunna do a roll bar lets not be putting joints in the main hoop .
The time it would take to weld out those joints , you could have a proper 1 PIECE hoop which is so much safer , and i'll even weld it all out for you as my bus is getting closer and will need an interior soon .

Andrew

fastnuf ·

Shit mate I agree with Oz Towdster I would be doing the main hoop again. If something ever happened you only have one life. You can't scrimp on safety.
Regards.

Desert Moose ·

joins and welding to the chrome...

Mate, everything else looks great but are you using that roll bar or is that just a mock up to get a good one made later?

1916baja ·

Not welding to the chrome, Its just a mock up at this stage... mainly so i can work out where and how i'm going to brace the gearbox, After thinking it through over the last few days yeah, I will just be using that hoop as a template, i didn't like the idea of the join either. As you can see its just tacked together. Hey Andrew thanks for the offer, I'll let you know if i need your help welding it up. I have someone organised but if it falls through i'll give you a buzz. I'm still waiting to get into your bus though! How far off now??

Look what arrived in the mail today! It's the last of the deliveries i'm waiting on at the moment. I'm kinda bummed out now.

ian.mezz ·

DRD Street Turbo Engine, 255hp@8lbs Price: $8999.00

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=762810

dangerous ·

255hp on pump fuel and 8psi, with no interccoler?
With those manifolds?
I would have to see that to believe it.
Perhaps with 14-15psi.

SuperOwen ·

I dunno Dave, the engine is finley tunned so it might be true..... 🙅

1916baja ·

I have a little to update, I am expecting another shipment from veedub parts unlimited soon including CB cromoly head studs, CB straight cuts, engine bearings, pertronix digital rev limiter and a bunch of other stuff!

Meanwhile i have dropped the roll cage i mocked up into dragtec customs to get a hoop bent up and the other parts cut, basically i will get it back as a weld in kit...

I also picked up my heads and case from Dave butler today, He has done a fantastic job as with everything else he does! You always know your parts are in good hands when they are with him! He has de-shrouded the combustion chambers, re-seated the valves, replaced valve springs, and fly cut for 10:1 compression, They look great! I'm expecting atleast 2000-3000hp 😂
He also tapped the case for full flow, He already opened it for 94's before i got it.

1916baja ·

I also managed to stumble across some slicks! I was not going to get slicks just yet but the price was right and they are practically new! 1 pass and stored properly. hoosier 26x8, you can also see the formula vee tyres i'm using on the front up in the corner of the pic. I also managed to find some 15x8 4 stud steel rims in my brothers shed of all places! they had been there for years without him even knowing they were veedub rims! I will be using short axles on the rear in place of the original long ones and i'm using 2" wider fibreglass guards in hope of getting these wheels under the guards!

I'm hoping to get the rollcage back by next weekend then i will be able to really get into it. The parts are pretty much all there it just needs putting together!

Until next time,
Mick.

Craig Torrens ·

If it was my motor, I'd be using a different cam. The 148a cam you're intending to use is designed for a street motor using stock vw heads and Kadrons (Peak power at 5500rpm)...............do yourself a favour and use a more "drag" orientated cam or at least a more agressive cam.

ian.mezz ·

so I guess your hoping to get between a 14 and 16 sec 1/4 mile car.😊

1916baja ·

ian.mezz wrote:so I guess your hoping to get between a 14 and 16 sec 1/4 mile car.😊
I'b be over moon if it is a 14sec car but realistically will be chuffed with a low 15sec car, It will be fairly light with lexann windows and some weight saving.

As far as the cam goes, My first instinct was to replace the cam with a fk87 or similar but as i am will be turbo charging down the track a little, I have decided to use this one. Plus i got this cam as part of a deal with lots of other engine parts so it makes sense to just use it as it owes me nothing. It was actually used in a 1916 with the same heads i am using and the same carbs i am using (44idfs) Ivan tighe grind from what i have been told. You are right though, the peak power is supposedly somewhere between 5500-6000 but the power tends to plateau rather than drop off so for a drag motor it is not a bad cam.... But not ideal either. How much of a power increase would be gaind from upgrading to a fk87?

dangerous ·

Being that you have a stock wide ratio gear box,
you will NOT want the FK87.(which should use ratio rockers to be beneficial).

It may make a higher number on the dyno, but will be slower at the track with your combination,
because it will fall off the power on the gear change.

Unshrouding of the chambers has increased the low-lift-flow that your heads were lacking before,
and this tends to extend the rev range anyway.

For your low buget racing, if you want to change the cam, aim for something between and engle 120 or 130,(or equivalent in your favourite brand)
using stock rockers that you have.

The cam you have is a 'regrind' 148A Tighe grind which has 253 degrees at .050" lift.
It has .400" lift at the valve with stock rockers.
Use this information for comparison when selecting your next cam.

1916baja ·

Thats good info Dave, I don't plan on changing cam, Just looking at comparison for an idea of what a cam change can do.... I am happy with my decision to keep that cam for future purposes, although it's probably not an ideal cam for a turbo application either, its probably better than a FK87 right? Thanks for the info on the cam, I was thinking i'd like to know more about it last night.

1916baja ·

I got the last shipment from the states today! finally!
CB cromoly headstuds, CB straight cuts, CB glandnut, Bugpack breather kit, gaskets, seals, bearings and a pertronix digital rev limiter ( no over-reving for me). I'll be sandblasting my wheels, brakes, axletubes and tinware tomorrow, then i can re-assemble the rear end of the car. the rollcage will be back mid next week.

ian.mezz ·

I've been reading up on the forums and they say that if you running slicks that you should have a wedge mate crank.?
😊 Dont ask me why

1916baja ·

Db knows my combo and he hasn't mentioned anything? I'd imagine if I was expecting heaps of power that might be the case...

Craig Torrens ·

you dont need a wedge mate crank.

1916baja ·

Well still moving along slowly....

When we fitted the rust repair section at the bottom of the pillar the bolt hole did not line up with the guard hole and was too far out to re-drill the guard so i bogged over it and thought i'd deal with it later. Well i dealt with it... and this is what i did.
I drilled the hole on the body in the right spot and used a T-nut ( i know you can buy the actual nutserts but i worked with what i had) I cut the prongs off, tacked it into the hole then built up the weld around it until i could shape it similar to the originals. I think it worked ok, I aint no master fabricator! Still teaching myself how to weld....

1916baja ·

Guard on... I am using these front guards, They have a little bit of history behind them... They are actually the guards that were put on the camel filter drag bug after he sold it to volks mod, I noticed the similarity in colour and took them to show dave butler and he seems to think this is the case, I was given them by Daryl yates, he told me at the time they were off his old drag bug but i thought nothing of it back then. I think it's kinda cool anyway...

1916baja ·

I also painted my front beam and set up my axles and tubes on my gearbox, they are both now ready to go back in....

whathaveidone ·

nice work. Warwick here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dangerous ·

Looking good dude!
Warwick will be here before we know it!

OZ Towdster ·

Yep , best i start looking at the Rat and not just driving the legs of it

1916baja ·

Thanks guys, yeah warwick.... Looking good for it, Dave R now has all my engine parts, all balanced and ready to assemble. He'll be starting that when he gets time.... hopefully before warwick 😂

And here you go, My first solo rust repair! It's not perfect and it took ages but it'll work and i'm stoked i gave it a shot.

OZ Towdster ·

That looks ok Mick , just keep practicing dude , hell we all still blow holes in auto panels even old buggers like me and i'vve been welding for 20 + years

1916baja ·

yeah, it got to the point where i was doing more bad than good trying to fill in pin holes so i'll let some sikaflex do the rest.... Hey are you gonna come grab those seats or should i put them away??

1916baja ·

Here is another update....

My wife got bored last weekend so i put her to work with some painting.... I ended up using gloss black rustguard, It seems to have come up ok at this stage. I know it looks like i'm doing things backwards but if you see where i'm building the car it will make sense. I'm painting all the underbody, front end, rear end and floorpan first so i can get it rolling, then i'll put it on a trailer take it to daves, mask it all up and spray the body.

1916baja ·

I finally got the rollcage back, Mistakes were made ( note the different brand of steel on one of the rear bars) through a slight mis-understanding, But it will be painted anyway so it don't matter. I'm going to mount the harness to the firewall/luggage area at this stage, will probably look at putting in another bar at a later date for the harness. It's just tacked in at the moment, I'll be fabricating the frame horn brace soon then i'll get it all welded in at once.

Now i will be mounting up the gearbox and the rear end, also the front end can all go together! It's all there just gotta find the time. Soon to be a roller!
Mick.

whathaveidone ·

nice👍

Aussie Dubbin ·

Can you please take some pics of how you have tied the bar work to the floor at the rear of the door and on the firewall? Cheers

Keep up the good work

ian.mezz ·

dangerous ·

ian.mezz wrote:that looks heavy our little bug weighs 687Kgs

WOW!
Even with Rose another 45kg? it is light!
Mine was 809kg with me last time I weighed it.
I guess when you add paint it will increase in weight.

1916baja ·

It's a little heavy, I'm losing weight elsewhere though.... Lexann windows, gutted interior, fibreglass guards.... and I'll go on a diet too! I have an extra 10 kgs my waist I don't really need!

STIDUB ·

^ buy a bucket seat you JUST fit in at an ideal weight, get fat & lazy = no fun driving = motivation to remain healthy

ignoring the fact that its still undrivable its kinda worked for me so far 🙂

1916baja ·

I have a bucket seat i bought at valla last time it was on, It was a perfect fit then.... Now it's a tight squeeze 😂

whathaveidone ·

Mine weighs 600kg add 120kg for me. Ive already got a bigger seat and now im outgrowing that one😠😠. Hoping to loose 20kg before warwick and fibreglass front and rear will helpout too.

1916baja ·

Here ya go Aussie dubbin, As i said it's only tacked in at the moment until i fabricate the framehorn braces. The ones behind the door are 3mm plate boxed up and cut to the shape of the heater channel, It will be welded to the floorpan and body. The rear is 5mm x 100mm plate, the bars that go down the back will be welded to it then the whole plate will be bolted to the firewall, the framehorn braces will come up and meet with the bottom of those bars and bolt up to the same bolts.

Hope that helps.
Mick.

mactaylor ·

mate why didn't you move the rear bars closer to the top bar where it intersects, supported bends and joints are the go.

1916baja ·

Because in the majority of roll cage pics in beetles i looked at they were in roughly the same position as mine, i could probably move them out a couple of inches if you recommend it?. There is much room for improvement as time goes on, Once i start running a turbo set up and decent times i'll look into adding to the cage.

Aussie Dubbin ·

Cheers for the pics. I would agree with your thoughts, on the bars i have seen have they go parallel and meet in a similar place???

PS i would run a horozontal bar across to tie in your seatbelts. I hear people say that in the event of a crash you really dont want excess harness (from seat to X) This way you put a bar about half to 3/4 back height... Something to think about.

I could probably find out but what steel do you need to use?

Cheers

1916baja ·

I will be putting in a bar from the crossbrace to the hoop at a later date. I wanna get my seat in there and set up first. As far as steel goes, you'd be best off with cromoly but thats expensive and not as simple to weld together from what I hear. I used mild steel and believe andra rules state with 50mm tube must have minimum 2.9mm wall, then the smaller diameter tube less wall thickness. You would have to check with your cams rules to get it right for your type of racing. I just roughly kept to the guidelines so if I want andra to tech the car one day it's just a matter of adding and making adjustments rather than re-doing the whole thing.

mick.

Sides ·

Some nice progress there Mick !!!

👍

Aussie - definitely do your homework on the cage mate, cos Andra and CAMS have very different requirements. Also your friendly transport dept will have their own requirements too if you ever plan to road register the car.

There's also rules about how harnesses are mounted, angles of the straps and so-on.

I know Mick isn't planning to go road rego, and a half cage like he has is definitely not allowed with CAMS.

essex ·

Hi 1916baja,
ive just posted a new thread with some pics of what i'm putting together, the rollbar photos might be of interest to you,
cheers, Barry

1916baja ·

I had a good day on it today, and last week i managed to brave the cold and put a few nights in also! It now steers! and i hope by the end of this week it will stop too.... but hey i won't count my chickens.

1916baja ·

I mounted the gearbox up last week, so today i made up the framehorn braces. They are not fully welded yet and i'm thinking when i take them back out to weld them i might put a gusset on the corners?? they tie into the rollcage at the luggage area. From the side view they look a bit dicky, it's because of the angle they are on, the photo makes them look a bit odd. I'll tidy them up a bit when we weld them too. The bolts are obviously too long, i still need to get the right ones.

1916baja ·

I also made up and tacked in a bar to mount my harness to. Hopefully i'll venture out into the cold again this week and get a bit more done.... I'm gonna have to if i want this thing ready for warwick!

1916baja ·

Got my rims painted today, Will get the tyres on them Tuesday.... I also tacked in the mount for the harness, I'll trim it down and tidy it up once its all welded in. All the rear end is now in including brakes, brake lines, shocks, Just waiting on my drums to be machined to take the short axles, and my discs to finish the front then she'll be a roller! I have a feeling its gonna end up being a scramble to get to warwick....

1916baja ·

Picked up my wheels today with slicks and formula vee tyres on... i think they look cool! bloody heavy wheels... I think a lighter set will be on the cards in the future!

I also mounted the fuel tank, I bought the tank from Ben out of the Rat but as it turns out the earlier model bug had a different front end where the tank mounts... I didn't think of that. I knocked up a mount for it tonight out of 25x25x3mm angle, It don't look real pretty but it'll do the job. It's just tacked in at the moment, everything is getting fully welded on saturday.... fingers crossed.

whathaveidone ·

Wow, sat alot lower in my car!!!

whathaveidone ·

What size slicks are they???

1916baja ·

Yeah, i found a pic of it mounted in the rat. That wall it mounts to seems to be higher and flatter in the earlier bug, there is only roughly a 3" strip on mine and its definitely not flat! It clears the bonnet by a mile and it's all that will be in there so where it is will be fine. I'll pull it out and polish it when i get a chance. The Slicks are 26'' x 8"

1916baja ·

The slicks do look huge in that photo! They aren't as big as they look there...

Aussie Dubbin ·

Making some pretty good progress here mate. Cheers for the progress pics its great looking at what others are doing also.

whathaveidone ·

Were did you see the pic????

Yeah, i really get a kick out of looking at other peoples projects too. It keeps me motivated. I think i'm starting to worry about not having it ready for warwick so i'm getting out in the cold every night and getting a bit done!

1916baja ·

VWMA feb-april 07

1916baja ·

Big day yesterday! Dave came around and fully welded everything, We also managed to get the car on the ground and mock up the guards to get an idea on what it might look like.

I am chuffed with the front end, but i am in need of some opinions on the rear guards.... When i initially put them on with out the front guards on, the guards i have always despised grew on me quite quickly! But since putting the front guards on i am now not so sure. Keep in mind it still needs to come down a couple of inches in the back, and it will all be painted satin black.

matberry ·

Keep up the good work.

My vote on rear guards...👎

But sometimes the ones you have are better than the ones you don't.

Sides ·

😊 🙁 😊

STIDUB ·

^ what mat said, however whats a set of smooth wide rears worth to keep it as a closer match?

1916baja ·

About 300 bucks.... And thats if smoothies are wide enough. How wide is a stock guard? From the wheel arch in the middle?

dangerous ·

Looks good to me!
You could spend the extra 300 on more engine work!

1916baja ·

This is true dave.

Aussie Dubbin ·

Theres the problem. i think we prefer the smooth rollover guards without the step... leave them for now, guards can change anytime if you don't have funds spare at the moment

pete wood ·

love the guards I go with what Dave said. Less show more go. 😏

whathaveidone ·

Dosnt matter what we think! Its your car! If you like them, keep them. If you dont like them, get new ones. Either way, guards dont make your car go faster!!!

1916baja ·

Yeah, I'm gonna use them for now... I couldn't decide if I liked them or not but daves right, if I had a spare 300 bucks I would spend it on the donk!

20bkombi ·

Love the way you guy's think😁
Every shed minute counts, good to see the enthusiasm. Keep it up!!

BeetleJuice ·

Guards are Purdy! I have them on mine! When the paint is on, vehicle is sitting lower and providing the tyres fill the guards, they'll be fine.

1916baja ·

I thought they were the guards on your car, I couldn't see them properly in any of the pics to be sure....

STOCK ·

whathaveidone wrote:Dosnt matter what we think! Its your car! If you like them, keep them. If you dont like them, get new ones. Either way, guards dont make your car go faster!!!
dido

however if you do decide to go smooth later on
talk to brad (westi) he has moulds for a couple of different widths

1916baja ·

Yeah, he was my next step as i don't think i can get off the shelf smoothies as wide as i need them!

ian.mezz ·

Do you think you will be able to do a good burn out with those big slicks to get some heat into them????😊

1916baja ·

Been told no burnouts with the superdiff anyway so not really an issue. I might be able to warm them up a little but no line locks or anything silly....

1916baja ·

Dave came around and we bled the brakes so she now steers, and stops.... we just need to get her moving forward under her own steam 😂 i also made up my dash during the week so we fitted it and the tacho. It's all out again now for painting but i think it looks cool... I will have to find a use for all these switches 😂

1916baja ·

I also got one of these 2 weeks ago....

They come with a different hat!????!!!😂

whathaveidone ·

Mine came 4 months ago!!!!! Congrats to you both!!! There even harder to figure out than race cars but a hell of alot more rewarding!!!! good luck with it all. Its fun

LOWBUG ·

Iv'e had one for 14 years and I still can't work out where she fits into my car, but she's slowly letting me know.

1916baja ·

I re-trimmed my seat today... i had some time to kill while the paint on my floorpan dried. I thought i'd break up the black with a splash of colour!🤪

Craig Torrens ·

Love the pink !

Any engine updates ?

1916baja ·

Thanks, thought I'd do something a bit out of the ordinary! As for the engine, last I heard it was being mocked up. That was last week. I'm hoping to have it in the next couple of weeks.... As soon as dave finds time to put it together.

whathaveidone ·

Im sure westi will lovbe the seat!!!

1916baja ·

Well the inside of the car is more or less finished, seat is in, dash is in, harness is in, shifter is in, everything is painted... Just waiting on some aluminium to make an adaptor for the boss kit on the steering wheel, and waiting on a set of aluminium door and rear quarter panels from the states.... I started masking up all the openings this arvo as the inside will now be shut up until it's painted! hoping to have a coat of paint on by the end of this week... I have a week off between jobs so can get some jobs/dragcar done! here are some pics....

1916baja ·

Finally in primer! Will be painted by lunchtime today i reckon!

hellbugged ·

👍 great job!

paint day is always exciting

1916baja ·

yeah, I'm absolutely chuffed that it's all one color! I must admit though, i hate prep work like nothing else! I'm pretty happy with the result so far considering my limited prep work....

Paulc1964au ·

Awesome look forward to see your results from today's work

1916baja ·

And bam! 1 black bug.... it didn't turn quite as flat as i would've liked as i used jet black with a flattening agent in it. I think it takes a little time to flatten using this method??? Maybe someone could shed some more light on it.... But i'm happy enough, It's all black and it don't look too bad!

1916baja ·

Engine is on the go! Dave sent me some photos of it mocked up earlier today! I should have some more updates later tonight...

whathaveidone ·

Looks like its all coming together. You may even have it done early. No week of midnight shifts to get it done!!!!😂

1916baja ·

I'm hoping to have it done with time to spare... Dyno'd and tested on daves driveway atleast 😂 I'm going to work on it now! I'm hoping to have it on the ground tonight!

1916baja ·

On the ground! hopefully for good.... The bonnet IS staying blue! It has pin striping and surface rust that i cant bring myself to paint over, It just cant be re-created so i decided to leave it.... Ratter.... I love it. I'll love it even more when i the engine is in!

1916baja ·

HAHAHA That will get'em talking. Looks good. Those tyres look huge on the back

1916baja ·

I think it's because the back of the car is so high still with out the donk in. They are the same height as yours and only 2" wider.... What will get em talking??

whathaveidone ·

What will get em talking?? [/quote]

Leaving your bonnet blue. someone will have something to say!!!

1916baja ·

😂 i like it, everyone i know tells me to paint it...

1916baja ·

Parts laid out for clean and final assembly and
Case closed..... Getting closer.

1916baja ·

And now we have a complete longblock! Dave is doing a fantastic job on the engine build, he really is putting alot of effort into it. Checking and cleaning everything half a million times and making sure it will be right the first time, Making it look pretty too.... He sent me these pics at 10pm last night! Nice work boss!

venFun10 ·

looking good mate
who is building your engine

1916baja ·

thanks mate, dave is building my engine (davobuggy1641)

venFun10 ·

i thought pigman was building his engine

1916baja ·

nope, pigman is doing his turbo setup and wheelie bars.

venFun10 ·

ok i get it

what other cars has pigman done in the past?

1916baja ·

I don't know mate, you'll have to ask him.

RISKY4LIFE ·

OMG looks great 👍
work harder not long to go 😉

1916baja ·

Thanks mate, engine will be in friday morning then off to Matt berry for the wiring! getting exiting now 👍

hellbugged ·

Great stuff!

paint the bonnet ! 😁

1916baja ·

😂👎

Or get a different bonnet and paint that one !!!

hellbugged wrote:Great stuff!

Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black 🙂 ....so to speak ... 😉

1916baja ·

Well the engine is now done (huge thanks to Dave Richardson for putting in a massive effort this week) and Also Dave Butler for all the advice and machine work. The car is now up with Matt Berry for some wiring! We were so close to getting the engine in! unfortunately we need to make a few adjustments before she'll slot in. oh well.... here is a few photos from our road trip.

matberry ·

Hey Mick... so close but so far dude..... engine hardly got to snff the car. 😉😂

1916baja ·

it'll happen soon enough 😁

Sides ·

Lookin good Mick, but you could have at least bolted the donk in to get a pic for all us voyeurs !!!

😉

1916baja ·

We planned to, as I said, a few mods are required.

1916baja ·

The car is now at daves place where it will be fired up soon! Matt berry did an incredible job on the wiring! it's really neat, i'll grab some pics of it this morning. We managed to cram the engine in yesterday arvo. A bit more cutting and modifying but she fits and looks the part! Still need to drop the back down a couple of inches.

ian.mezz ·

looks nice.

whathaveidone ·

Looks nice, Will look even better when that slack ass gets the stinger up to you!!!!!! I wuold demand a discount!!!!

20bkombi ·

Moving forward nicely, looking shit hot too.👍👍

BeetleJuice ·

Looks really good!

1916baja ·

Thanks guys! Yeah anyone would think that slackass with the stinger has better things to do that post old bits of steel all over the country! 😂

venFun10 ·

looks nice

matberry ·

Good to see you got the engine in guy's, when does she get fired up?

1916baja ·

Oh geez mate, had a bit of a major drama today due to a dodgy gland nut. Have not fired up yet but on the plus side your wiring works! it made us feel a little better after todays proceedings.... Will update more on the situation when I know whats going on.

matberry ·

1916baja wrote:on the plus side your wiring works! it made us feel a little better after todays proceedings....
🙂

whathaveidone ·

stinger will go on the truck tomorrow!!!

1916baja ·

Well after a big weekend, she runs. A few little issues to sort out but she runs..... But not without it's complications 😠

Saturday night, ready to put the engine in for the final time... All thats left to do is tighten the flywheel gland nut and fit the clutch. Gland nut just starts getting tight then starts getting looser and looser until it wont go in or come out... oh boy. we managed to lever the flywheel in order to get it off only to find this, a stripped gland nut and the thread in the crank not looking all that flash either. Dave and i both felt sick with the thought of what this might mean... A phone call and a trip to see Dave butler on sunday morning had us smiling again as he managed to clean up/re-tap the crankshaft thread and fit a replacement gland nut. what a relief.

I have a video of the start up but it will have to wait till thursday as my computer is playing up and i can't upload it till then.

This was a chromoly racing gland nut.

Sides ·

Mmm... is it Thursday yet ???

(no pressure tho dude)

😂

1916baja ·

I hope that works, first time youtube upload....

Please ignore the foul language... thats just what happens when you work on a car for 3 days straight with late finishes every night! 😂

1916baja ·

and ignore the oil leak, under control now.😀

venFun10 ·

why did you not run the cam in....It will go flat

Sides ·

Heh heh... loud is an understatement... but what do you expect with the slacker-stinger-senders you find on here ???

Almost as bad as a certain carb supplier who shall remain nameless....

😂

Good to see the beast is alive mate... nice one.

👍

Sides ·

venFun10 wrote:why did you not run the cam in....It will go flat
Pretty sure (like 99.9999999% sure) that Mick's cam and followers have met before, and spent like 3000km together....

😉

1916baja ·

Yeah, you're right Dave... the cam and followers are old friends, they go way back. 😂 What is new though is the crack we found in the case yesterday.... The case looked almost new and really didn't look to have done many miles at all, Not happy. We really should have got it crack tested but it was in such good nick it didn't seem to be an issue... We have repaired it with devcon (not the 4 minute liquid steel crap) and will be firing it up tonight to see if it fixed it. Hopefully it will at least get us to warwick and we can deal with a new case later. Dave had it running so sweet yesterday too, purred like a really loud, angry kitten....

venFun10 ·

I have never known a patch up job to work on a case
this is drag racing
i think you are wasting your time but good luck anyway

1916baja ·

We have had good results with it twice, once where you tap for full flow and once behind the flywheel. 2 different engines. flogged the pants off both engines off- road for years and they never leaked. I am hopeful we will have the same results, id rather try this than spend up to a grand on a new case, machining and all... not to mention the time for Dave to build it all again. I know it may not be a permanent fix but it's all we got at the moment.

FROSTY ·

If you don't mind, where was the crack?

1916baja ·

The crack is on the front of the oil cooler mount, where it meets the case.... If you can picture it? so it's straight into an oil gallery.

matberry ·

Bummer Mick. Good luck. If it doesn't work, you still have 4 weeks!!! Plenty of time. I'm sure we'll be able to find you another case to work with.

whathaveidone ·

sorry mick, dont have a spare case I can send up to you!!!! What was the result of the quickfix?????

1916baja ·

Ah, not so good mate.... Not so lucky this time around. We have one more shot at the repair. We found there had been case savers put on the oil cooler mount, obviously an attempt at fixing the crack by a previous owner of the case. But what we are going to do is make a longer case saver and seal it in the oil gallery... if you know what i mean? essentially making a new oil gallery and sealing the crack from the inside. Dave is doing this during the week so i'll know by the end of the week if i need a new case or not. Either way, Dave is set on getting this thing to warwick and says he'll build it again if he has to. Just sux i may need a new case, not an expense i had budgeted for at this stage in the build. But if has to be done it has to be done, no point in stopping now.

Stanley ·

bummer man. Hope it all works out.

it's an expense but like Mwtt said atleast you have 4 weeks

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Sounds like a repair is on the way.

If you guy's need anything, feel free to give us a call.

'Bummer' is about all I can think...

🙁

But then am sure the buzz when she's done and running right make it all fade away... I know it has with mine !!!

👍

venFun10 ·

don't waste a week just change the case now. it is the only way to not put oil on the track

1916baja ·

venFun10 wrote:don't waste a week just change the case now. it is the only way to not put oil on the track
yeah, alright mate I get it. it's a shit thing to do but unless you are going to pay for my new case and re build the engine then I will take my chances on at least trying to repair it. thanks for your helpful advice anyway.

mick.

stagvee40 ·

I cant really picture where your talking about, but is there any hope of getting someone (skilled) to tig weld it up? Can it be done there?

Youll get her fixed.....👍

1916baja ·

Oh i have no doubt it'll get fixed, just how much it's gonna cost is the question 🥲 I did actually think of getting it tig welded but i am unsure if it would need to be pulled down to be welded anyway??

Sides ·

Any news dude ?

1916baja ·

The news is good! We wanted to wait until we checked it again today before opening our traps! Leak has been plugged and we are goin' to warwick! Although it's not really a permanent fix, it will get us to warwick and we can deal with the re-build after. The new case is on it's way next week courtesy of a very generous Rod Penrose. We finally got to drive the car today and wow! its fast. a smile from ear to ear. Here is a video on daves driveway.

essex ·

Good news, looks the goods in the video!

whathaveidone ·

Awesome!!!!!!!!! hope dave dosnt mind the 2 black marks on his driveway!!!!!

1916baja ·

He loves it! Thats him putting them there....

whathaveidone ·

WHAT?????????? You didnt get first drive!!!!!!!!🤪😂🤪😂

1916baja ·

Na, he is generally the test driver of all of our cars, we figure if he can't break it, we certainly cant! He deserved it after the massive effort he has put in over the last few weeks with the dramas and all.

whathaveidone ·

All ready for Warwick then.

1916baja ·

Yeah, more or less.. just little things to finish tidying up, windows to go in, running boards to go on, block off all the holes between me and the parts that can catch fire! Should be bringing it home this arvo.

matberry ·

Great work Mick 👍👍 Now get to work on Daves buggy !!!!😉

Been there all day! He said he was gonna update soon...

matberry ·

Mmmm i heard today you guy's were slacking and not even started at 10am this morning......sounds like there's plenty to do 😁

1916baja ·

😂 John will tell ya that! Oh theres plenty to do but it's achievable... We needed at least a few hours break between cars! And Dave was out of bed this morning before 10, i've known dave for a long time and if he is out of bed before 10 he is keen!

venFun10 ·

nice mate
i m glad to hear the leak got fixed.
when are you going to the dyno?

1916baja ·

Gonna leave the dyno until after warwick, the car is running sweet at the moment and as you probably know you run the car pretty hard on the dyno and we don't really want to run the risk of anything happening before warwick. We will be getting on the dyno before we tear this engine down for a reference point for hp. I'm interested to see what this engine is pushing out though as it don't feel like any 1916cc i have ever driven 😁

venFun10 ·

sounds sweet

Sides ·

Mate, good stuff !!!

Seems to launch pretty well in the vid... should be fun out at Warwick !!!

👍

1916baja ·

Can't wait!

1916baja ·

Dave, are you bring jezzi out to warwick? I really wanna see it run hey....👍

Sides ·

Yeah mate, Jezzi and I definitely planning on being there

Got a day at Mt Cotton tomorrow which I'm treating as a test and tune, so providing that goes to plan my entry for Warwick will be going in on Sunday !!!

😀

Sides ·

C'mon Mick... I know there's been progress... WHERE ARE THE UPDATES !!!

😀

Oh and my entry for Warwick is in... yours ???

1916baja ·

😁 yeah mine is in, I put the running boards on tonight and the windows are all in now! I'll get some pics tomorrow in the daylight.....

1916baja ·

All ready to go! finished off all the little jobs over the weekend, washed it and put it away till friday! We never ended up adjusting the height of the rear as it squats pretty hard on the launch, we will have a chat to alot of you guys over the warwick weekend and get some advice on what we should do.... it seems to be settling a bit though. See you all at warwick! 👍

whathaveidone ·

Well done mate! Looks good!!!
You ended finishing before me😂🤪😂
See you next week

dangerous ·

Looks great!!
You know what they say about big stingers though!

Sides ·

Well done Mick - looks the goods !!!

Agree with DB's stinger comment, and also a pity you ran out of time to paint that bonnet !!!

😂

yeah, ran out of time....😂

Oh 'ang on... is that some grafix I see there on the rear quarter ???

1916baja ·

Yeah, I don't have anymore stickers yet.... Looks a bit bare.

Sides ·

Heh heh... you could go the ricer look, and put your shopping list below the A pillar !!!

But instead of Tein, Sparco etc. make it stuff that'd be useful for a weekend in Warwick.... "Heineken, Smiths Crisps, Cornflakes, Sunshine (eggs), TipTop (bread), COON, Is Don Is Good (bacon)...."

😂

Man, they really need to give me some stuff to do round here....

Yup they sure do Dave. You are scaring the kids with that kind of talk.... and some adults lol

1916baja ·

Well warwick has come and gone, the budget drag car ran faultless all weekend, The crack in the case never gave us any trouble, I ran a best time of 9.022 @ 74mph with a 1.9 60ft which was good for runner up in the aircooled class. absolutely chuffed with the car and we are very happy with the 9 flat starting point.... Dave will tear the engine down after the sydney event to replace the cracked case and do some port work on the heads, a possible cam change might be in order also.

1916baja ·

Now the build continues... I was advised by Frosty at warwick that willowbank raceway will not allow me to run with no engine cover, so over the next couple of months i'll be fitting an engine lid and removable rear apron I picked up this totally sweet deck lid yesterday! i thought seen as everyone liked my unpainted blue bonnet so much 😂 i would continue the trend with the back of the car! 😂😂😂😂 I also picked up this rear apron i'm gonna cut down and make fit. I'm looking into fitting a big friggin wing too, i think they look cool 😎

5lam ·

You should go with a fibreglass decklid and apron. Keep the weight down! lol
Any luck with the rear wing? I have a mate that could make you one.

1916baja ·

westi is looking into the wing, will see how he goes as I'm in no hurry... As for the deck lid and rear apron, those ones in the pic are free 🙂 fibreglass ones aren't. Maybe in it's next evolution. The steel ones don't weigh a hell of alot anyway.

Stanley ·

1916baja wrote:Now the build continues... I was advised by Frosty at warwick that willowbank raceway will not allow me to run with no engine cover
I don't and can't run deck lid so we'll see what they say about mine. I believe as long as you don't start the car until you move out of staging lane to the track all is good.

dangerous ·

Don't risk it dude, they will frown on you!
You could fit something on there surely!!
It'll probably look like a fish skeleton though with all the protuding bits.

5lam ·

True!
I built boats & Motorhomes for 6 and a half years, so if you do ever want any fibreglass work done, let me know 😎

Stanley ·

I will when the top fuel cars do. It's a ridiculous rule.
I can see the OH&S side of things with people sticking fingers in belts but it's a staging lane. I think as long as you're not driving your car forward in the lanes I should be ok. The guy that sits next to me has a daughter who works at W'bank and runs an altered (also with no engine cover). I'll get him to clarify.

FROSTY ·

Hey there,
It was the first time I haven't run an engine lid too ( Andra guy told me to park it) Stanley has always run without a problem. Stupid rule cause anyone that gets too close will trip over the exhaust....and burn their leg.....( i guess then they could get fingers caught in the fan belt )
I think the guy was just wanting to exert his authority and picked the beetle. at least take one just in case. Stanley is right too don't drive it forwad in the staging lanes too.

1916baja ·

I better get my ass into gear and make something up.... so damn busy.

Stanley ·

Feedback received from W'bank so far is it depends on your class rules and it may have just been an over zealous steward, however if he's not happy no racing.
I don't believe Wally runs one and his car is ANDRA teched and has been running for years

I'll suck it and see.....🤪

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Wally does have a wing over the top and the sides are enclosed a touch but yeah the whole back is wide open.

whathaveidone ·

I ran a tnt wsid without one and had no problems, but Ben Ford ran at the jamboree there and was told next time he comes back he will need to have one?????

1916baja ·

Got myself a trailer! Bought it off Brad (buggy brad) gonna give it a coat of paint and fix a few little things up before i start using it... its solid as a rock and it doubles as a big ass box trailer! i'm also going to modify the ladder racks a little and use them as part of a frame to close it in. I am going to make a canvas cover for it and use it to camp in at the track.

essex ·

nice one!

Craig Torrens ·

1916baja wrote:a possible cam change might be in order also.
I knew it wouldn't have taken you long to change that cam !!!😂

1916baja ·

Well, yeah... I guess if we didn't need to pull the engine down anyway to replace the dodgy case we would probably just leave the cam as there is nothing wrong with it and i'm happy with the power it produces but in saying that, We might as well see how much more we can get out of it with a cam change while its apart. With alot of head porting and a cam change we should see good results....

1916baja ·

Bought my trailer home today, the list of things we did include: wheel bearings, brakes, scrapped the lidless tool box, moved the front one to the back and replaced it with a jerri can holder, fixed the busted hinges, replaced the jockey wheel, replaced the clearance lights, added an electric winch and gave it a coat of paint!

Stanley ·

Top stuff

whathaveidone ·

Were are you tie down points going to be???

1916baja ·

oh you cant really see them in those pics, there is recessed tie down points in the floor and there is also a bar running down each side of the trailer. I will probably strap the front of the car down to the draw bar.

humpty ·

What's news Mick?

1916baja ·

Not much mate, been real busy with life and work.... Ill be setting up some sort of deck lid over Christmas ill hopefully get out to willowbank for a run on the quarter before Sydney. Have you managed to get yours out with the new set up yet?

humpty ·

Nah.... Like you (and everyone else except for Rodney... 😁 ), I've been flat out with this last term at school.... On holidays as of yesterday.... For the next six weeks.... 😵‍💫 So it's full steam into the projects over the holidays.... Getting the trailer rego'd next week hopefully, then it's time for some TnT early in the new year I hope.... Rose's great efforts are keeping me motivated.... Like her, I'm running low boost right now (7psi), so will be happy to get low 14's high 13's as it is... Should be good for that as it was doing high 14's in NA form.... Here's hoping....

ian.mezz ·

Looks like it mounts on the sides

1916baja ·

Yeah i have some decklid standoffs and a rear apron here i will use, pretty simple job really, hoping to have a look at it today. I fired it up for the first time since warwick this morning.... What a sweet sound! makes me wanna go racing again!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Westi's deckled is held on with 3 zeus fasteners from memory. One either side at the top and one at the bottom. Deckled is fiberglass.

humpty ·

I love that car.... Sure wish the POS was that neat.... And really do like that old school engine cover.... Did Brad make it?

whathaveidone ·

yeah he made it, Or at lest his fiberclasser did!!!! His name is Geoff. He used to sell them on ebay

1916baja ·

i finally knocked up an engine lid.... i got a rear apron, cut it down and made it removable... this is for all the blue bonnet haters! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

whathaveidone ·

I cant see the pic!!!

1916baja ·

there i just stuck two of everything up by mistake!

1916baja ·

there i fixed it....

humpty ·

Looking very tough.... And 'complete'! 😁

1916baja ·

Well there you have it, It did 9 flat at 76 mph on the 1/8th at warwick and it does 14.45 @ 88mph on the quarter at WSID. awesome weekend, cant wait to do it again! Will start improving as money permits.... hopefully before warwick.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Improving hmmmmm... lets just put this turbo on it I have lying around😉

1916baja ·

Off ya go..... Ill rip the donk out next week.

dangerous ·

It may just be the gearing you have,
or it may be that your float bowls/fuel pump is inadequate,
but your second half is a little slower than it should be.

Check wallace racing to compare your 1/8 mile to now.
Sydney is at a better altitude, so even the 1/8 mile should be faster, it may be jetting.

1916baja ·

Well we never ended up putting it on the dyno so its just tuned by ear..... Also we never really re tuned when we got to Sydney as it seemed ok. The fuel pump should be sufficient, its electric. Might play around with it a bit and take it out to willowbank soon.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

After watching the vids, seems it could, as Dangerous said go a little lower in gearing!

1916baja ·

They are just stock ratios...... Even my 1/8 times were slower than Warwick. Probably more to do with the attention Dave paid to the engine leading up to and during Warwick... This time round we didn't really touch it. Put fresh fuel in, cleaned the fouled plugs and re set the tappets. Also driver error is probably much to blame.... I had a shocker. Red lights, breakouts, short shifts and rev limiters were the story of my weekend!

1916baja ·

1916baja ·

Just watching those videos, the last one with frosty.... why does it seem like I'm granny shifting??? frosty seems so quick through the gears and holds his revs up where as mine seems to drop out through the gears.... is it the way I'm shifting or is it frosty's setup??? when i am driving the car i doesn't fell like i can shift any quicker..... but when i see the videos??? Just looking for advice/opinions....

matberry ·

Looks like you still have a stock ratio box.....and shifting like a granny 😀😀

1916baja ·

😀😀😀 I do..... and i think i must.....

dangerous ·

Yeah frosty has a 1.58 third and 1.217 fourth, whereas you probably have a 1.26 third and .89.
Having the ratios closer does help with the shift speed a little
because the synchro does not have to work so hard with the rev drop,
but a lighter clutch disc and good shifter can help too.
I reckon some closer gears may be worth a couple of tenths on a car like yours.

1916baja ·

i'm running a daikin dicc and a scat drag fast shifter.... not really happy with the shifter at the moment as it has developed a habit of grabbing reverse when changing from 3rd to 2nd and im finding it hard to grab 3rd when accelerating... Would it be wise to experiment in flat changing with my setup?? or would it be too much stress on everything? I will definitely go the close gears and everything you suggested in your pm when money permits.

ian.mezz ·

check out Rose shifting , with have one of those Vintage speed old skool shifters LoL 😊 Rancho pro comp trans .

another video link from the Sydney Volkswagen Show Down 2012 in the finals against CT
CT had the head start and I red lit o well it was still fun to catch him

dragvw2180 ·

I have had a Scat shifter in some of my cars and they are pretty good , I think the shifter problem can be fixed easilly by installing an adjuster in your shift rod, that way you can lengthen, shorten or adjust your shift rod from side to side for a perfect alignment. A quick check is to put your shifter into first gear, remove your shifter and see if the cup is facing straight up. If it is off to either side it will not shift properly, the other check is to put it into nutral and see if it is the same distance from the center of the cup to both bolt holes for the shifter. If pictures would help I will be glad to take some. I have my engine and trans out now for some upgrades ( RLR REV6 clutch and a new Autocraft case ). Like Dave suggested I would install a set of gears as money becomes available, 3.88 rp/ 3.78/2.31/ 1.58/1.21 is a nice all around box for a full bodied car for track use only. Mike McCarthy

1916baja ·

Thanks for the advice, i'll rip the shifter out when i get a chance and have a look at it... i was actually surprised myself when i put it in as i didn't even adjust it to get it to work.... it's probably just out of adjustment.

Craig Torrens ·

What did the car weigh at WSID ?

1916baja ·

Weighed 680kg without me in it... would be 760kg with me in it.

1916baja ·

Dave has always told me my car gets the mega squats on launch but no-one has ever got a photo to show me... my wife did and man is dave right! might need to do something about that....

1916baja ·

Hi guys... im after some advice regarding turbo charging! after doing a bit of thinking and talking it over with Dave we are considering turbo charging the bug with the turbo system dave has that he was going to use on his buggy before injecting it. Its a draw through system with a 650 holley i believe, a t04 turbo and a waste gate. It has been run before on another engine so it is set up to work, question is what else needs to be done?

here is my engine combo at present in NA form

1916cc
cb cromo counterweight crank
tighe grind 148a cam (although not ideal for turbo, it will work)
cb 044 heads 40x35 with a little Dave butler magic, single hi rev valve springs
stock rockers
10:1 compression
everything is balanced
i'm running a facet style electric fuel pump
ignition is a pertronix ignitor 2 system, billet dizzy and digital rev limiter
44idf webers

So heres what we do know... we will have to lower the compression, it will be getting dual valve springs.

What we dont know is will my facet fuel pump be sufficiant? can i use my pertronix ignition system? i know the timing needs to be retarded on boost but can we just lock the timing? it doesnt need to idle well as its a race car. Is there anything else we are overlooking?? it seems quite straight forward... what else do i need?
The reason we are considering this is, i have N/A plans for this engine in the near future anyway... costwise, due to the mates rates turbo kit and selling my N/A stuff it may end up costing less or the same to turbo charge than work the N/A more... on top of that from where we stand there seems to be more to gain from a turbo.

Stanley ·

Ditch the facet and get some bigger fuel lines if you haven't already.
You seem to be on the right track otherwise.

humpty ·

Good news.... A blown Dub has got to be a good thing....

Anyway....

• If the facet can produce enough pressure (7psi), and flow enough (97-110gph), then you should be ok with that.... But a better quality pump would be a good idea.... I have a Carter Black with 1/2" lines!!!! Over kill!!!! And it's a full return setup.... 3/8" line with a regular Carter pump would be enough for you.
• You can lock the dissy.... 24º is the ball park.... The Pertronix should be fine.... But a programmable ignition would be better.
• Yes lower the compression, but don't go too low... 8.5 or 9:1 would be ok with PULP (I'm running 7.5:1 which I think is a tad low)... Race Fuel a little more.... Methanol can go higher.... But it all depends on the fuel you plan to run.... Chris is running upwards of 9:1 I think as he's running Methanol.... Maybe look at fitting copper head gaskets to achieve your comp drop.... I run .40 ones on the POS.
• Not familiar with the cam so can't comment on that.
• The carb shouldn't need to be boost referenced as your not gonna hit the street.... But it would be nice to know what actually is in there before commenting further.

Get a good AFR o2 reader in there.... I have an INNOVATE DB series deal in both the POS and on my Bus.... They are brilliant and highly recommended.

Fun times ahead.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Better fuel pump, swirl pot, rising rate fuel reg, big ass crank case breather set up. Rethink suspension set up as you will have a lot more power under you right foot!! Brakes as well. A lot more than just adding the turbo and making the engine itself capable of handling the power. The car as a whole has to as well!!

humpty ·

No need for a swirl pot IMO.... The float bowls on the Holley are more than man enough.
No need for a rising rate FPR either.... Draw-through webers need it as do blow-through setups.
Crankcase breather is an absolute must on any high rev engine, but turbo engines need it even more.... I found oil being pushed back up the dipstick under boost!
I have just upgraded mine with a vent from the oil filler and rhs rocker cover... The drain back is also rhs rocker cover vent.
Thinking about adding another vent to the OEM fuel pump location which is currently my oil drain for the turbo.... Not sure if both functions will work together there.

1916baja ·

Thanks for the advice so far guys, much appreciated.... As far as the breather system goes there is one in place at the moment but i dare say i'll need to up the size on all of the hose, fittings and catch can which is no big deal, i currently have it breathing from both rocker covers and the filler neck, i guess i could run the drain back down to the oem fuel pump spot. the facet fuel pump is a real low pressure one as thats what i needed for the webbers so a new one will be in order.

what size breathers would you recommend?

Suspension setup will certainly be tinkered with down the track, i need to have a dig around daves place to see if he has another set of type 3 torsion bars laying around! Is there a part number or specific marking they have?? from memory there is bins full of torsion bars.

Brakes should be fine... i have discs with new calipers on the front and drums on the rear. the whole braking system is new.

I think at this stage the weakest link is probably the gearbox or axles... it has a super diff and heavy duty sideplate but other than that, its stock. If i am careful on launch i think it will be ok for a while.

As for the rest of the engine, i think it will be ok... I trust what Dave has done with the engine and i know the time and effort he put into the build. It's a solid engine.

i dont plan on running it flat out straight away anyway as i need to learn how to drive boost as this is all new to me. We'll creep the boost up as i upgrade other parts, ie gearbox, axles.. down the track. At this stage its more about deciding wether to spend the money on NA or cutting to the chase and boosting it straight up, Just do it once you know, I dont have to run full boost straight up. And hell, if we try it and it doesnt work then i guess we just go back to NA, we'll more than likely still have all the NA stuff laying around until we get it all running anyway.

Keep the advice coming guys!

Mick.

humpty ·

I have 13mm ID lines for all my breather hose.... That should be plenty..... I hope.... The oil drain is also that size.... As I'm running a Ball Bearing turbo, the oil going in is minimal.... Plain Bearing turbo require more oil I think, so you might need to run a larger oil return.
I still have the old 40horse torsion bars in my car, and the stock springplates.... Was running TII bumpstops, but have since gone back the TI versions in an attempt to get a little less spin off the line... As I have just fitted Cheater Slicks too, the spin will prolly not be an issue now.... Building limiting straps and springplate guide plates at the moment.... Will also put lower springplate blocks to limit the downward movement of the springplate.... Only running GR2's on the rear and stock Cofaps oils on the front.... Car currently runs very straight, but is getting light as I'm crossing the line.... A trans lift is on the cards.

1916baja ·

yeah tranny lift was is on the cards for me also.... only an inch or so. where did you get oil supply for the turbo??

humpty ·

1916baja wrote:where did you get oil supply for the turbo??
A 't' fitting between the oil pressure switch and the crankcase.

1916baja ·

Righto... That's where my pressure sender is. I guess i could just put another t in there....? Or would that effect the pressure reading? Or i could go from where my case has been tapped for full flow.... I am using a bugpack type deal for fullflow at the moment.

Stanley ·

humpty wrote:
1916baja wrote:where did you get oil supply for the turbo??

x 2 and no it won't impact oil pressure reading.

typethreeking ·

I had a 32mm breath off my case, breathers off both rocker covers ( -8 lines ) and breather off the dry sump tank and still pumped some oil into the catch can so the bigger the better if your planning on running high boost. Probably check you head studs aswell if your running boost

humpty ·

typethreeking wrote:.... breathers off both rocker covers
typethreeking wrote:....and still pumped some oil into the catch...
There's your problem right there.... Don't vent the LHS rocker cover.... Drain it only....

If you vent it, the excess oil that gets pumped to that side of the engine (that rocker fills with oil) finds the easy way out (instead of draining back to the sump)... That 'easy way' is straight to the atmosphere via the catch can.

Vent the crankase to the highest points possible and the RHS rocker cover only.... Your leaks will be gone.

1916baja ·

So you are saying run the turbo drain back to the LHS rocker cover?? I'd imagine we wont be running a hell of alot of boost straight up... enough to get up and boogie but not enough to start exploding gearboxes (i hope)but you're right bigger the better with breathers from the word go. At this stage the headstuds should be ok, they are only 8mm but they are CB cromoly. I have another case here that i guess i could probably upgrade to 10mm headstuds when the time comes.

ian.mezz ·

turbo drain back to the fuel pump hole works ok

1916baja ·

Was kinda thinking i'd run a big breather from there....

humpty ·

ian.mezz wrote:turbo drain back to the fuel pump hole works ok
That's the way to do it.... With your turbo position, drain the turbo to the top of the engine...... The LHS rocker cover should not be vented at all.... Only drained to the sump.... And even then, only in extreme situations is that really needed.... By extreme I mean large capacity and high revs.

ian.mezz ·

1916baja wrote:Was kinda thinking i'd run a big breather from there....
just buy one of those $20 empi beather kits.

1916baja ·

I already have a bugpack one but i doubt it will be sufficiant....

typethreeking ·

Being dry sump I didnt get oil from the rockers covers, more so from the breather on the oil tank and crank case. The new engine want have breathers on any rocker covers just the case

ian.mezz ·

thats what we use.

humpty ·

typethreeking wrote:Being dry sump I didnt get oil from the rockers covers, more so from the breather on the oil tank and crank case. The new engine want have breathers on any rocker covers just the case
Always wanted to have a close look at a dry-sump setup.... A buddy has just gone that road with his sprint Dub....

Anyway.... I had one of those cast ali breathers.... Found it wasn't up to the task for my engine.... It never over flowed or anything, it just never sealed properly around the cover..... And there was no blow-by issues with my engine, but there seemed to be a good amount of crankcase breathing and huffing going on, so kinda think it's more down to higher rpm that my engine produces.... Only a small engine (1776), but rev's like a mad thing.... 7500rpm which is a lot for a turbo engine.... I'd run that one you have and see how it goes.... Easy to update if it's not up to the task.

Stanley ·

My last run sucked/blew the gaskets in due to lack of breathing. This is my priority for the Turbo now I have better rocker covers.
Latest craze I believe is big arse breather on the case. You'll find current one is inadequate but this also depends on boost. Go big early.

typethreeking ·

Your right Stanley, that's why I put a 1 1/4 breather off the case, stopped oil leaks with bigger breathers

1916baja ·

I do remember the last motor i had in my baja leaked alot until i put a breather system on it... stopped everything.

matberry ·

I had 4 x 1" breathers on Joint Effort , it saw 8500 rpm without any oil issues. N/A 2165cc

ian.mezz ·

use a total seal 2nd ring.
you use a turbo so you don't have to rev your motor as much

typethreeking ·

I'm still hoping to see 8000rpm with my new turbo set up in the drag car, just depends on set up and what power your chasing

Stanley ·

Hey Mick I like the exhaust on your car now.....😁

modnrod ·

http://www.et-performance.com/turbo.html
Maybe give serious thought to one of these set-ups. I used them on KTM big singles and high-rev Ducati's, both of which oil-mist up badly, a little 1/2" Krankvent fixed it straight away. They work well.
The Holley650 seems a bit big to me. You could tune it in OK for the track, but a 465 Vac/Sec with the secondaries boost referenced (vacuum diaphragm reversed on the actuation arm) would give much snappier response, even a 600Vac/Sec. Each to their own, some prefer mech sec, but the vac/sec set-up can provide natural progressive fuelling that is boost referenced.
Carter pumps are 5psi internally regulated, and are 5psi even at over 100GPH (the black elec ones are the go) through 3/8" lines, no return, no boost reference (dead-head), the duck's guts for Holley streeters up to 300rwhp, no annual rebuilds needed (and no, they're not painted blue..........).
Just a few more points to consider! 😎

1916baja ·

Stanley wrote:Hey Mick I like the exhaust on your car now.....😁
I like the exhaust thats on my car now too.... 😂 Shame i cant stick a turbo on it! If i end up going ahead with all this it will be for sale once the turbo system is all up and running.... gotta pay for it somehow! It would fit your N/A 1915 combo nicely stanley!

Funny though, i'm rather partial to the exhaust on frankenstien... we should just swap! it even already has a turbo attatched! 😂

Stanley ·

Doesn't the setup already have an exhaust?

1916baja ·

Yeah its got it.... Ill have a good look at the setup tomorrow, Im going out to daves place. I was joking regarding the swap.... Implying we swap your complete turbo system for my merged headers.... 😀

this is it... it seems more and more like a good idea the more i look into it! 🤪

Do it Mick you won't be disapointed.

1916baja ·

Dave is taking the turbo down to Aarons tomorrow so he can check there is nothing wrong with it....

your right, this is a good idea...

yeah do it . rose just has a under boot street combo.
more power 😂🤪 you can feel it .
this is rose passin CT who did a 14.8

ours is so nice to drive.

Took mine a for a spin the other night..... Damn its fun!..... Do it!!!!!

Hey Mick, sounds like a great idea.
Even though I am a N/A fan, you cant beat the value of a boosted engine.
Hell, I ran boost for 11 years, so I know it can be fun!!

I would just de-compress your engine a little, and add some good dual springs.

Like anything, there are always more , or better ways to do things,
but for a budget build, your cam will work fine.

If you had some extra money burning a hole in your pocket,
I would consider a larger exhaust valve though.

matberry ·

Don't forget a scatter shield for your flywheel will need to be added to keeo the ANDRA officials happy.

1916baja ·

Thanks Dave, good to hear you think its a good idea! Dual springs were on the cards regardless... once we start setting it all up we'll be in contact regarding compression and all. I think we'll set it up with the heads as they are for now and see how it goes, maybe down the track we might look into bigger valves... i certainly dont have extra money burning holes in my pockets! Just out of curiosity though, what would it cost??

I also love N/A but for the money i couldn't in my lifetime afford to get real power from a N/A motor i dont think. I mean really... whats better than the sound of a tough N/A motor ripping off a skid on the limiter???

essex ·

anyone have any scatter shield pics?

ian.mezz ·

the best thing about a turbo is the little screw on the boost control. our goes from about 7 to 18 , not sure if we even going to try 18 🤪

Watch he doesn't come back with some dual Turbo set up attached to a 13B

1916baja ·

Ha ha! i wouldn't mind... i'd just have to figure out a way to stick it in the back of my beetle! Any way, Aaron has had a look at the turbo and he seems to think it will be ok to use! and apparently the waste gate is a good one... so look out turbo town, here we come! just need to save a few pennies for a few things i need then full steam ahead providing nothing goes wrong in the meantime. If The dyno day goes ahead this year we'll take it down in NA form as i'm still really keen to see what it does.

typethreeking ·

Don't think the dyno day will be happening this year!!!

just book it in to the dyno , maybe cost about $50 for a poewr run and print out.

Good news.... Windage in the crankcase is under control then.... Excellent. Do you have the crankcase E-Vac setup that AJ sells?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Due to my current workload and a few other issues and Pete's health I don't think I can commit to the time needed to make it happen. Would need a lot of help from a lot of people for it to go ahead this far into the year. Contact me if your interested.

Sorry to Hijack your thread mate. 🙂

no e vav, I had split seals.

Dragged the bug out of the shed today, cleaned it up and took a couple of snaps of it with the new bonnet.... I ended up just telling him to do whatever he wants. After all, it was free and he just wanted something to get him back into it. I'm chuffed, it wont be everyones thing but i like it! As you can see the blue bonnet is still there in the background.... cant bring myself to throw that bad boy out 😂

whathaveidone ·

looks awesome!!!!! What about the decklid??? If he wants to practise on mine when its up there he is more than welcome!!!!!😂

1916baja ·

He has the decklid at the moment, it might take a while because i think he's a bit pissed at me! He did the doors too but i was unhappy with them so i re-sprayed them... His work was fine but my ideas didnt really turn out how i wanted them too... it looked shit. I think he'll be over practicing by the time you get up here!

dangerous ·

WOW! Looks awesome....way better than the blue one anyhow!!

1916baja ·

With warwick fast approaching i now decided its time to do something on the car.... Is it just me or do everybodys cars look like this when there is an event coming up!? I will hopefully have some more parts on there way from Rod pretty soon.. we are gonna squeeze more out of the little 1916 before we go turbo!

All i can say is Dave is going to be rather busy right up till jamboree!

whathaveidone ·

Its not just you. mine usually looks like that

nbturbo ·

Better get my arse into gear and get some plane flights and a motel organized-looks like some great cars going to Warwick.

I finished mine at the track for the shootout in feb!!!!!!!

tar76 ·

Mate haven't seen the spray till now, looks the goods! 👍

1916baja ·

Got some ugly old heads from rod! Gonna chuck em on and see what happens..... they are welded and ported vw heads 42x37.5 My current heads are unported 044's 40x35. We ported the heads out just a smigin more to match the manifolds perfectly. Hopefully we'll have it all together and back in the car by friday night....

1916baja ·

With Daves car now running and sounding sweet! we managed to get my engine back together and ready to bolt in on sunday.... With a late night dash to Cols place, we picked up the required offset air cleaner bases we needed to get it together... Thanks Col, you're a legend! Where else could you get a pair of offset aircleaner bases at 10 pm on a friday night! The manifolds are huge so there was alot of cutting and modifying of the tins to get it all to fit!

humpty ·

That's a big fuggin' hole you got there Mick!

fish26 ·

thats what I call nice DP

vassy66T1 ·

Lookin' sweet ... now thrash it like it's stolen 👍👍

1916baja ·

That's the plan! Apparently Dave fired it up today but i can't seem to get onto him to find out how it went....

1916baja ·

Looks like she's more or less ready to go.... Dave fired it up and tuned it today, i heard it run and took it for a little squirt up the driveway... It sounds awesome and to be honest, scares me a little.... But in a good way! Few odd jobs to do but Dave is taking care of that tomorrow while Im at work. See you all there!

1916baja ·

The car Ran 8.925 @ 73mph, 1.8 60ft with the new/old heads... thats .097 gain on last years effort although my mph was actually slower and my 60ft times have improved... I'm happy i ran into the 8's as that was my aim! i would have liked to go a little deeper but i think the cam is letting me down. Also on sunday we could not get the car to run on more than 3 cylinders until it was revving over about 4500-5000rpm! so thats how i drove it.... Good fun! It was awesome to catch up with some people and put some faces to names with others!

1916baja ·

1916baja ·

Here it is! Due to a very finance concious wife, this is probably the best gearbox i will ever own! Just picked it up from the man himself MR Butler! I might even paint it this time.... Thanks Dave, you're a legend!

NEW Albins 1st (3.0 : 1) and 2nd (2.0 : 1 ) mainshaft and gear set.
NEW first gear shim and set end floats of all gears.
Drill hubs for oil holes.
NEW 2lt circlips on main shaft.
Modify 002/1800 bus hub for your 3rd and 4th
Metal caged needle bearings.
2lt pinion and main shaft bearings
NEW chrome moly pinion nut
Steel forks to replace the brass ones.
Welded the hubs on 3rd and 4th.
Welded the clutch fork properly, haha.
NEW bronze bush for the clutch fork.
Various NEW nust and washers.

So now the gearbox consists of all this plus a super diff and heavy duty side plate.

Christmas has come early....nice work Mick

No way I can get a decklid on mine. I can't see how they can make you run one unless you're running a street car in a street series or street meet. Maybe some clarification before we get there would be nice otherwise I'll be knocking one up from alfoil and painting it black.

I'm not super street. Surely my big wing could be considered a decklid.

whathaveidone ·

At a ANDRA event you would be. Some officals can be a bit picky. im not saying you have to have one, but i would have something ready just incase

Heh heh - nice sounding list there Mick, but don't you think it's maybe time to lose the word "budget" from the subject ???

Ha, I can wait lol

1916baja ·

It's still a budget build Dave... I was only able to get the flanged crank setup because I got a really good deal on it! DB has been through the box, stuck some albins in there, welded some things and checked it out. It should be ok.

1916baja ·

And ask my wife about the budget build! According to her there is no "budget" left!

1916baja ·

While my budget is pretty much nil at the moment due to house renos, I had some store credit with Rod so he sent me up a box of goodies! We can soon start mocking it up! I also picked up all my other stuff from DB this morning! Cheers mate 👍

Looks like your getting quite a good sticker collection going!!!!! Should be plenty of room to build it were the kitchen was now its out the back!!!!!!

Ok thanks...i'm after a 4qt

Stanley, you going up sizes in oil pumps?

No Barry....current pump is enough but sump is too small. Have two shagged rod bearings

What no. rods are they, did you see your oil press. drop?

1916baja ·

So i got a little bit of shed time today, i started fabbing up a new weld in midmount for the gearbox but got stuck with that so i went on to mounting my new fuel system... I have a couple of questions, i'm running a bypass style reg for a return system, i only have 1 boss on the top of the tank which i was using as a breather,do i need a breather?? can i just use that boss for the return?? And also, i notice most people put the reg in the engine bay but is there any reason i cant just put it up the front with the rest of the fuel system?? It'd just save running a return line the whole lenth of the car thats all...

cheers
mick

typethreeking ·

You need to have a breather for the tank and with the reg at the rear I think it will give a more accurate pressure reading being closer to the carbs

1916baja ·

Ok, what if I put the reg near the tank and the gauge near the carb??

Stanley ·

I have my reg up front and the gauge mounted to the carb inlet

1916baja ·

Do you have a return setup??

essex ·

You leaving all that body work on?

1916baja ·

Yep, for now. When I can afford to give it a decent paint job I'll look into a 1 piece front end. Until then she'll remain a heavy old pig!

typethreeking ·

You still need a breather on the tank

1916baja ·

Yeah, I know that... I'll get another boss welded in.

humpty ·

Everything I read in my fuel system research said FPR needs to be as close to the carb as possible.... That's what I did, and works a treat.... Just make sure your return line is as large, or larger than your feed.... I run 1/2" lines all round.

1916baja ·

humpty wrote:Everything I read in my fuel system research said FPR needs to be as close to the carb as possible.... That's what I did, and works a treat.... Just make sure your return line is as large, or larger than your feed.... I run 1/2" lines all round.

Really? I read that the return should be slightly smaller than the feed so it was easier to keep pressure...

Stanley ·

1916baja wrote:Do you have a return setup??
Yes. That's why I moved it to the front. Return pressure was messing with pump pressure. I was using the old fuel tube as the return. Much better now

1916baja ·

Forget that! You're right, I was confused... I must have read it wrong!

humpty ·

In my case, I have a fuel pump that is a little on the 'overkill' side.... I have a Carter Black which I think runs at around 15psi.... Really too high for my hp..... And this might be part of the reason for the issuses I experienced....

But anyway.... The reg controls the pressure and flow back to the tank.... Not the line.

A small return line will restrict the flow back to the tank, which puts strain on the pump and the fpr, which causes fluctuations and cavatations in the line.... The result is erratic pressure and flow control.... A larger return line allows for faster return to the tank, less stress on the pump and consistent pressure control.

At least thats what I found after going through 5 different fuel system setups.

If your running pump fuel I can't see any benefit in mounting the reg up the back with the need to then run a line all the way back to the front. As long as you measure the pressure at the carb and can sustain pressure and flow all is good. Just a short return line into the tank. Methanol might be a different story.

humpty ·

You could be right Andrew.... I don't know.... I did mine this way, as that was conventional thinking, but I don't think it's the only way.... Your option allows for shorter lines, and less fuel being carried in the car, which is good thing.... I placed the fpr at the rear of the car, and close to the carb as that is what the paperwork said to do.... Yours obviously works, as does mine... Many way to skin that cat.

Stanley ·

I should've chucked a smiley face in Simon. I might be missing something.
Hey Mick pump fuel or methanol?

whathaveidone ·

Fight fight fight😂😂

typethreeking ·

I've always put the regs at the rear as close as possible to the carbs or fuel rail if injected as nearly every car I've seen has it there so I thought if it works for them it will work for me😂

1916baja ·

Planning on running 105 octane race fuel. Can't afford to go the meth conversion straight up. What size fuel lines should I be running? -6 or -8?

Stanley ·

Go -8 if you plan to go meth down the track...no pun

Sides ·

-8 all the way dude.

Doesn't cost or weigh much more than -6 really, and no harm in having more fuel flow capacity than you need.

Cry once basically.

👍

dragvw2180 ·

I have never had a need to use a return line on my drag cars and have always had the regulator near the carbs . My fuel pressure always stayed pretty steady wherever I set it from 2.5 - 7psi depending on which carbs I ran. I do consider the fuel pump a wear item that I replace every couple years and I rebuild the regulator every year so that I can replace the diaphram and check the spring . If I was driving on the street for prolonged periods of time I might think about a return system but only after I had a problem. I am NOT saying what you guys are doing is not needed for your cars , just that I have been lucky not to need it all these years. Mike McCarthy
p.s. I use Holley pumps and regulators

humpty ·

dragvw2180 wrote:p.s. I use Holley pumps and regulators
I had nothing but problems with all the Holley products... But like you said, street cars are different animals.... Most of the fuel control problems I had were with the DCOE (which turned out to be heavliy modified for meth by the PO!), and the need to run a boost refernced FPR with that carb.... Hence the full flow setup.... Most all Holley FPR's are designed to be used a 'dead head'.... But the pumps never lasted very long either.... I now use the Carter pump which is an internally submerged pump that uses the flow of fuel to keep it cool, along with the Aeromotive FPR.... I now have rock solid pressure to the 500dbl Holley, with plenty of flow through my 1/2" ID lines.

Why?
Because at the time I had a certain amount of money to spend and the straight cut kit was about 170 bucks and the helical kit was about 40... I'm led to believe the gain isn't really worth the extra outlay. The budget at the time was the biggest factor, straight cuts were not exactly necessary.

Thanks guys, I'm really happy things are moving along.

Stanley ·

Cool Mick...question was in relation to performance aspects of straight cut verses helical not budget.

1916baja ·

Oh, if the money was there I would have used them regardless! I like the sound! But aside from what it looks like its still a budget build, the only reason I have all these cool parts is because I got a really good deal on them!

1916baja ·

Bit more gear rolled in today!

matberry ·

Straight cut's aren't just about the noise, but I'm sure your aware of that. Being a turbo (milder cam) and a race engine you will no doubt be doing early teardowns so as to keep an eye on cam bearing thrust wear. They do wear faster using stock gears on a performance aplication.

1916baja ·

😂 yeah I know it's not all about the sound Matt.

humpty ·

Really liking the direction and choices your making Mick.... Its a very logical build with solid processes, spending where you need to, based on what life says you can do at that time... Taking is easy and making the right moves will prove the best course in the long run.

1916baja ·

Gee thanks Simon, thats some kind words! I have been pretty lucky with alot of this gear... some of its been barterd, some of it ive been in the right place at the right time and the rest of it is just down to knowing all the helpful people in this vw drag racing scene. ian.mezz ·

we have 2 low budget vw drag cars .
VW case, VW heads, VW inlet manifolds and a Big VW Holley 😂

1916baja ·

Got another box from rod today! 27mm short torsion bars, oil cooler bypass, some offroad cylinder head tin that we will modify to run my fans and a set of Scat 5.7" chevy journal rods with 3/8 bolts. The Cb ones i have need work to be used in this motor so i went with new ones....

Dave butler has had my engine and he has machined the barrels to the right length and set the deck height. Due to the restrictions of building an engine around the header and having the wiseco b pistons we ended up with quite a bit of deck.... So compression is set at 7.5 :1 and we will run a bit more boost than originally planned 😎

In reality, By DB setting the compression a little lower than we had planned its bringing it back to the direction this engine was suppsed to be going in before we started geting carried away! A nice reliable, long lasting turbo motor... Its safer this way im sure. 😂

1916baja ·

Picked up some more gear today... the slicks are 26x6x15, going to a 5.5" rim under stock guards. They are the ones morgan put the link up for in gatton. Cheers mate! 👍

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, Got a fair bit done this week end. On Fri I snuck a bit of shed time and die grinded the oil holes on the main bearings and in the case so they lined up and also grinded the 'chamfer' around the sump hole (DB Trick) to allow the oil to flow into the drop sump easily. Mick came to help out Sat and began by cleaning the case, cam, crank, rods, lifers and laid everything out neatly, ready for assembly while I started with setting the cam end float to .002". Had to skim a bit off the thrust washers to achieve this. Got both halves of the bearing exactly even. We then fitted the Timing and distributor drive gears onto the crank by heating them in a tin with oil on the camp stove and knocking them into place with a tube of steel and made our own 'dropped' pick up tube cos the one you get is, as Dave would say, Bogus.

Today we fitted all the bung's into the case where welch plugs had been removed while continuing to blow air through all the oil holes to ensure no oil galleries were being blocked/abstructed by any of the bung's as we went. We then blocked the oil pressure relief passage at the flywheel end by putting two pressure relief pistons plus a thin washer into the hole to block it completly and blocked off the bleed off hole from the passage at the pully end. Two orig. VW plugs were then fitted. The reason for all of this is Mick is running a Jacee 'By pass' Oil filter housing which has pressure relief built into it. Confident we had everything in place we continued to fit the Bearings, Crank, Dist Drive, Lifters and Cam into one case half. Paying att to the Toyota Thrust washers on the crank shaft and adding the synthetic running in paste to the new Cam and Lifters. Put the bearings and Lifters in the other case half painted the mating surfaces with Aviation Jizz. FITTED THE CAM PLUG and joined the beast together. Clicked it all up and It all turn's beautifully.

Here's some Pics of the oil holes and sump hole.

Yes/no?

Stick some carbs on it , it will be quicker than what you had!!!

1916baja ·

I have spoken to some of you but for those who are interested we are unsure if the car will be ready for Warwick, between work, family and life I'm struggling to find enough time to get the car finished... I have most of the parts I need though. We are still working on it every chance I get but it might not be enough... Well wait and see I guess. Here's a few things we've been up to though.

I modified my head tin to take the ducting from the bildge blower fans

I got all my fuel lines and fittings... Even though I got them cheap it still hurt!

I made up an alternator mount and Dave knocked up the oil filler.

1916baja ·

I bought a new battery and made a tray to mount it outside the drivers compartment so I don't have to put it in a box.... It's a dry cell 500cca motorcycle battery. It's about 1/2 the size of a normal battery and a heap lighter.

We started making up the intake manifold last night and finished cutting the end pieces up ready for welding tonight. These will bolt on top of Ida manifolds. Dave is learning how to tig ally but it's not quite as easy as steel so alot if practice is needed before these will get welded.

hypo-vw ·

very nice Mick , I love it !!

Looking good mate!!

Regardless of the fact that we still probably won't make Warwick, I hasn't stopped us trying! We go a heap done over the weekend. Dave pretty much spent the whole weekend welding.... Intake is all tigged up, holley is mounted, fuel system is in place, dump pipe and screamer done... And this is what it looked like yesterday.

1916baja ·

Did the breather system and remaining oil/fuel lines today.... I got a breather tank shell and I made up a baffle and top and Dave fabbed up the rest....

Jaycee bypass oil filter mount humpty! You can regulate the oil pressure from it and I shoots the excess back to the sump. No guys, car didn't get finished so it won't be making the trip to Warwick.... Everything is just holding on by a few bolts so it would probably all fall off by the time we got there!

Performance Upholstery ·

Hi guys, this is my new profile... I have started a new business so it just makes sense to use this one. I cant be arsed opening the other one.

I haven't updated in a while but its been moving along very slowly. Engine is in, intake all sealed up along with all the other bits and bobs. Fuel system is all finished. Just waiting on a power valve blank for my new 650cfm holley to show up so I can jet it and put it on. Once we plumb the staging brake up i'll take it down to the auto sparkie and he can finish wiring it up... I don't touch that shit. I hate it.

I also got an aem failsafe a/f gauge. It logs a/f, boost and rpm and also has a cut off so if it runs too lean it will alarm and shut the engine down. cheap insurance.

Not too far off now really, just gotta find a bit of time to work on it!

Well done and that doesn't look like a pig at all, considering you weren't revving it much 👍👍👍👍

It's just got some accelerator pump issues that need sorting out...

We took it to the dyno last night, very pleased with the results! Its in one piece and sounded strong...

We kept to a conservative 10psi boost for the time being.

👍👍👍

nice one mate, sounds tough

Got it out to the track for the first time last night! Managed a 12.8 @ 113 mph... That was short shifting and learning to drive again after nearly 2 years outta the drivers seat! I believe there is a low 12 maybe high 11 in it with this tune. It felt strong and went home in 1 piece so were all very happy! Bring on Sydney!

Been a while since I updated on here... we've re shaped the plenum under the carbie, put more base timing in an wound a couple more psi of boost into it... Its now making 222hp at the wheels with 295ftlb torque. Best time now is 11.38@119mph.

heres a vid.

Bloody good effort too Mick! well done mate.

Nice one. Love to see what it pulls with more boost.
Love that deep sound. Keep it up.

Thanks guys, next upgrade is the gearbox and axles.... Still running the super diff and stock axles so they have a used by date. In the mean time while saving for the gearbox were gonna play with water/meth injection.

Performance Upholstery ·

Been a while... Ran 11.30 @119mph a couple of months ago then ran a 7.15 @ 97mph at the JP event for the 1/8th...

It's now got a Proper race box with a rhino case, spool, albins 1st and 2nd, kombi 3rd and 4th with moly race axles all by the man himself DB.

We put a new, much bigger turbo on and started playing with the 2step now. Hoping to get out again soon

Looking good Mick!

Looks like you are doing pretty good . What was specs on the turbos ? I just rebuilt my old turbo from the red race car and put it on my new street car, makes me smile every time I drive it. Mike McCarthy

dragvw2180 ·

I didn't think to offer mine up, Turbonetics TO4B H trim compressor / P trim turbine .68 housing . This is the same turbo I ran on the red race car. Mike

It's just a China turbo Mike, I had a mate of mine go through it and the closest match he could find was a bit smaller than a gt4294 but bigger than a gt35. All I know is, it's bigger than the rajay and it sounds awesome lol! Had to modify quite a bit to get it on there.

dragvw2180 ·

Me I have no problems with those turbos , I have used those to try new turbo combos out . When I tore them down I just recleaned them , removed casting /machine burrs , polished the turbine shaft and then reassembled them. I actually have not had a failure after doing this. Looking at your car it is proof that they can and do work, congrats . Mike

Those pics are with the old rajay on there... I haven't got it out with the new one on yet. I also got this yesterday, Hoping to decrease intake temps mainly... may pick up a bit of power along the way.
