https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/90051/1956-vw-oval-beetlehervey-bay-qld

Lukeandleah14 ·

Hello all.....

We have joined this forum as we have a 1956 VW Beetle that has been passed through the family for the last 30 years and it's now at the end of the line.

It has 82,000 miles, new upholstry, CD Player, 12 volt.

I can't put an exact price on it but we're just putting it out there to see what offers it attracts.

Bug is located in Hervey Bay, 3 hours north of Brisbane.

If you require any specific photos, please let me know.

is it brown???

Lukeandleah14 ·

The actual colour is maroon but sometimes it looks brown depending on the light it's in.

Thanks for your interest

bushed ·

is eng and chassis etc orig and matching still as the bumpers blinkers etc are updates from much later models.
pure oval only parts means it would be worth more esp with gd semaphores

Lukeandleah14 ·

The chassis is original and so is the engine but it's been rebuilt about 4 years ago.
If anyone has an idea of what this bug is worth, please let me know.

bushed ·

u need to talk clear info
rego, tyres rwc incl??
radio/cd??
what size and age engine type and age of exhaust
non synchro 1st gear???
any rust
decklid seems from a convertible / nice but not std
so if u have indicators wrkin in pillars and orig taillites still then the value could go up anothr $500

ive looked at this car on carsales, and the strange thing is is that it doesnt have semaphores!

so is it an import and at some stage had soem modification work re updated lights or steering change? or is it not a true oval?

crsedge ·

bushed wrote:decklid seems from a convertible / nice but not std
Deckild isn't convertible as the grills would be smaller and vertical, rather than large and horizontal, thus grills are retro-fit into a W-lid.

Cheers

I'm sorry for not providing all the details...

Vehichle is currently registered in QLD until July
CD player as described
Apparantly it's an 1800cc engine
Not sure about what exhaust it is
Not sure about the first gear
There's no rust
No'one can remember when the indicators were were changed

Sorry for being vague......I just don't know a whole lot about them.

Someone might have welded up the semaphore holes, looks like the doors are 60s doors???
cheers shane.

When we aquired the car it didn't have semaphores but have been told that it probably did at some stage.

I really don't know the history of it before 1980...

Paulc1964au ·

If you look at this 54 that is for sale for $10K I would say yours is closer to 4K

wrong doors
wrong bumpers
no semaphores
wrong tailights
wrong indicators
ruined engine lid
wrong steering wheel
engine ? floor pans?
3 to 4k

flipflopsurfer ·

I have to say that Luftmeister is close to the mark, I would say 3k ish. Whether or not the car is a solid runner, the appeal of an oval is not only the rear window, but all the right bits, like rear lights and semaphores. To put that right would cost a fair amount, getting rid of the vents, opening the semaphore holes, repairing the wings, getting lights, etc. The B posts don't look wide enough for semaphores to me or is it an optical illusion?

Its not unusual to see bogged over semaphores, people used to try and update bugs to make them look newer like this one fitting later guards, bumpers, lights etc some ovals and splits even had bigger back windows grafted in 😂

In the 80s and early 90s when carrera kits were big it was normal to see 60s bugs fitted with 70s gaurds, bumpers, lights, bonnets and decklids/whale tails

Lukeandleah14 ·

Thanks for your help everyone. Any further info or price suggestions would be great!

big_ash ·

It's not original there is not enough pillar For the semaphores.

bushed ·

so then why does the front windscreen look like an oval one (smaller)

maybe seller can measure the screen
the later doorhandles or doors will fit the 56/7/8 ovals

zayus ·

Guys,

It is a 50 + year old Beetle!

Maybe, just maybe, it has has some updates or modifications applied? 🤓

Pfff

What you been smok'n???

Sunset Garage ·

Perhaps it's originally a private import from a country with RHD's and US specs. The Yanks had bullet indicators on their Ovals. Perhaps Canada before they switched over? or some of the northern European countries which switched over during that period from RHD to LHD like Sweden?

Frankly I can't remember all the dates and all my VW books are packed up in boxes, but it could easily be an oval with no semo's. Maybe it has had a LHD-RHD conversion? Lots of interesting embassy VW's have come out of Canberra over the years, mostly LHD.....

Granto ·

just a newb guys and know it's not fool proof but so the owners have some confidence in what theyre selling does the forum have the info to work out year/place of manufacture etc from the ID plates and the number stamped on the tunnel under the rear seat? excuse it if its a stupid question i have a 56 oval bodied beetle that was very heavily modified in the early 80's by a previous owner and also own a very original old classic ford coupe so I get the whole unmolested value thing but from a vw newb viewpoint this guys car with those original miles looks like its worth more than $3k to me? even modified ,just my opinion but i appreciate there would be good deals offered thru the forum and the knowledge you guys have

flipflopsurfer ·

Personally, it's not that it's been modified, but how it's been done. Finding a decent decklid and snowflake lights would be hard and expensive, also it has good paint, but welding up the indicator holes and that air scoop would ruin a fair bit. Also no semphores on show.
The vin plate you posted, is it yours? VW1/11 designates it as Beetle 2 door, standard model, LHD.

captainvw ·

Ebay will give you a true indication of what people are willing to pay, can be scary letting an auction run though. Almost as scary as the self proclaimed experts trying work out what you have ,entertaining though i must say
Good Luck with the sale

LUFTMEISTER ·

Yeh listen to the self proclaimed Ebay expert and sell it for 99c. 😏 Good Luck with the sale.😎

WRONG 🙅
All ovals had 1/11 embossed (not stamped) on them from the factory. The car also has the MKA number stamped into it....Aussie only

flipflopsurfer ·

I stand corrected, I saw the MKA stamp. If that's the case, where does the model designation appear e.g 112 115 etc?. Looking at the early Bentley manual it states all those different models.

Yep its mine, you had me goin for a minute on the LHD thing, would have been interesting.
Thanks also farkengruven for clarifying, I've learnt some things.

first you talk his car down Samba style then make out like your helping him out 😂

Stick it on Ebay and set the reserve sky hi or pull it before the auction ends that will give you a better indication then some of the Flippers on here

t_tuffnut ·

Just gotta find the right buyer I guess. It may not have all the right bits as sought by the purists, but it still looks good to me. The engine probably has some poke and the paint looks OK. I'd buy it at 4K if I had the money and space.

mattie ·

big_ash wrote:It's not original there is not enough pillar For the semaphores.
all pillars are the same size from 50 to 67 if it has thinner pillars it would of been a 68

johnp ·

LukeandLeah,im with captainvw, whilst i agree with luftmeisters remarks re wrong bits and probable price,i would probably have put it somewhat differently EG i think your car is missing some of its original bits and pieces and the price we think is maybe around the 3 to 4 thousand dollar mark as it stands but anyone who bought your car could certainly track down these parts(this is the fun part) and return it to original OR just drive it as is if they were happy with it the way it stands at the moment, hope we may have been of some help to you, good luck with the sale

Lukeandleah14 ·

Sorry for the late reply everyone, just got back home from hospital after our baby arriving.

Thank you to all for the help and assistance regarding what our bug actually is. We've had offers ranging from $50 to $7500 so far.
At least now we know roughly what it's worth and can put a price on it to sell.

Any further info is greatly appreciated!!!

Joel ·

Even if it has got some late model parts anyone who thinks a solid rust free oval on its original pan, on the road registered with a good driveline, and new interior is worth less than $4k needs their head examined.
or an interest in modern Korean cars.

Pumba ·

Maybe the the seller just needs to put a price on it,and put it for sale.

Lukeandleah14 ·

I have done now.

It's on carsales for $9000 so we'll see what interest it creates.

wolfgang54 ·

obviously worth what someone is willing to pay. you are not in an easy location and the car is far from standard so you may have trouble getting folk to look at it while others more original are around.

having said that you just never know. guessing if you have no offers in the first week or so then price is way to high. personally i would go with the 7.5k you say is already offered, thats seems like a very very good price.

best of luck.

p.s hold on to it !

LUFTMEISTER ·

Good work. Nice to be proven wrong. Hope it goes well. 👍

Lukeandleah14 ·

SOLD for $7,500

Thanks for your help guys!!!

LUFTMEISTER ·

Maybe Leah bought it off Luke.

norbert ·

That was in Hong Kong dollars.
