cool........there would be some pics of raising the rear torsions in both volkomen arts "junka" thread and also some in Peter Pages dak a tak yello car.
New mule for your turbo motor hey?

Am working on it as much as i can. lot to do but will be ready.Damn work keeps getting in the way lol. saw yours the other day .. looking good.
whathaveidone ·
get the glass on saturday, so a bit of progress will be made
RISKY4LIFE ·
ok let me start again 😬
wow you have a lot of work to do
this is what i did to the rear of my buggy
i have so brackets laser cut same size as od of the rear housing
65 mm i think and 10mm in the middle which gave me a 3 " rase rear housing and tones of travle with the buggy at 100 mm of the ground ok so i setup all 4 brackets on so 65 rhs and lined them up till they where spot on then tacket the down then cleaned up a type 3 rear end bit of cutting and grinding then welded the setup to the housing then set it of on the pan (what ever was left) and it lined up great the welded the shite out of it then boxed it all up and added some braces and that how i did it im not sure how everyone else goes about it
here are some pic the will show you better then i can spell it out ..again lol
Plan was to gut the beetle put in my existing motor, a coat of paint and go racing ready for warwick.. And yet i am asking questions on raising and narrowing rear , LOL😂

cjbolt051 ·
still working it out....development stage

G'day mate, if you still have the rear firewall aside I wouldn't mind working out a way to try and get it up here. We are after one for a restoration on a customer's beetle.
Let me know either way.

Stick it in the oval body Wayne has donated to Nashy

Hi Al , me and Ben just went out and dug the firewall section and rear wheel arches out of the bottom of the scrap metal bin . firewall and wheel arches are in great condition , but cant say the same for my hands lol (only a few minor sctratches ) let me know what you need and we can send them up with Michaels oval body . Wayne😎
cjbolt051 ·
A bit more of an update for all who wish to know.. many more nights filled with the sound of an angle grinder have been had .. and the car has been lightened a bit more . To the point that i do indeed need a cage . Also have purchased an alloy front beam which is now narrowed by 1 1/2 inches each side and solid plates made for the shock towers (thanks to allan & Morgan for there help)
cjbolt051 ·
here are some pics of some of the new bits and peices to go on the car
cjbolt051 ·
and more
cjbolt051 ·
More pictures to come of the other works being done .

Fantastic Wayne, thanks very much for your efforts - sorry about the cut up hands! Firewall is what I am after basically (well its actually for Dave Butler). I did need one for the customer's project however we ended up just repairing what was there due to time constraints. However Dave is still after one so sending it up with the oval for Michael would be sincerely appreciated. Obviously happy to help contribute to costs.
Cheers

thanks H .did you get home for dinner on time ... Hoping to have its first run at gunnadah but i think it will be to much of a stretch
cjbolt051 ·
Started to build roll cage from chomolly. was fortunate enough to have been lent a bending machine to do the job.
cjbolt051 ·
woo hoo ... Hey presto.. one main hoop
cjbolt051 ·
then i cut up some angles to act as cage base on the heater tunnels
cjbolt051 ·
then placed main hoop into position (got to love sticky tape) ready take sides
cjbolt051 ·
bent up side bars an sticky taped them in
cjbolt051 ·
then top and rear spreader and side intrusion bars
cjbolt051 ·
all tacked together ready to go down to chris to be tig welded up
westi ·
Why the weird bend in the main hoop.
cjbolt051 ·
Hi Westi..Put the bend in for more clearance to the seat and i cranked the side bars outwards towards the door for the same. Side bars and yet to be made rear stays will both meet at the bend. this is my first attempt at a cage so it may be differant to others , but as long as it complies when i am finished that is fine by me.
Dak-A-Tak ·
I'd double check with ANDRA tech person or rule book about cage design , the front loop bar pad looks to small ( there is a set size ) plus they are on a hollow section ( heater tube can crush down )
Cage being welded to body might be a touchy point becouse the body can separate from pan , I know it will be tide in to floor pan at rear . It pays just to check .
cjbolt051 ·
Hi peter, I am still to weld an angle from the base plates of the hoop to the pan so it can not seperate. After i have finnished setting everything up and i am satisfied i dont need to take body of pan they will be welded in. All pipework has been set as per Andra specs and sizes.(Chromolly pipes)
cjbolt051 ·
Aluminium Steering wheel with quick release and Aluminium door/dash panel
cjbolt051 ·
Been a bit slack and have not put anything up for a while.cut out all the rust and welded in plates
cjbolt051 ·
welded up holes to fire wall
cjbolt051 ·
and a bit more rust...
cjbolt051 ·
here are a few pictures of us cutting off the body so it is easier to weld up cage
cjbolt051 ·
next i started setting up the new steering and narrowed front beam. first the now narrowed 1 1/2 inches each side beam is reasembled into the shock tower. I had cut redrilled tortion bars to suit
cjbolt051 ·
then i set up a bracket for new rack to mount using an old rack i had lying around as a dummy fit.
cjbolt051 ·
removing the old beam and cleaning up arms for new beam
cjbolt051 ·
then in goes the new adjusteble front beam .... drop spindles still to come.
nbturbo ·
Love it-keep 'em coming.Looks like you have welded the ash tray closed-where are you going to put your timeslips????
venFun10 ·
looking good mate
is it going to be ready for warwick?
cjbolt051 ·
I will make it ... may be in primer only but it will be there. lots of nights after work still to come to get it there ....who needs sleep anyway... lol
cjbolt051 ·
After installing alloy beam i realised i do need drop spindles so the order was placed for more parts , tie rod assembly, drop spindles and more...
cjbolt051 ·
Now to raise the rear tortion assembly...
First i shortened the pan halves for access for mods then on the hoist i blocked it up and took all measurements as referance points for height and parrallell
cjbolt051 ·
then draw lines ready to cut
cjbolt051 ·
and start cuting...
cjbolt051 ·
rear end now separated
cjbolt051 ·
cut out ready to raise gear shift and give me access to remove pipes and tubbing i dont need and clean out tunnell
cjbolt051 ·
I cut an 8mm plate to size and tacked it in place then got wayne to weld it in
cjbolt051 ·
then after checking and double checking all measurements we tacked the tortion assembly back on
cjbolt051 ·
happy with all being right it is all welded by wayne
cjbolt051 ·
i then fabricated the top with a removeable lid should we need access to tunnel for running fuel line etc . starting with cardboard as templates
cjbolt051 ·
.
cjbolt051 ·
more pics to come

that is a pretty stupid question when every post that Chris puts on here has WPVW racing on it ....🤓
cjbolt051 ·
I am a proud member of the Wpvw team and wayne does all of my mechanical work . i would recomend him to anyone for quality and performance...
venFun10 ·
hey mate sorry to upset you, i did not meen that.
i am new to this country and did not know that wpvw was aprofessional.
i thought they were just a mechanic not performance seeing as they are haveing so many blowups with the orange beetle.
i think it would be shame to waste somany expensive parts.
reading the other posts mike from cbb looks like he does a top job but i dont know him just what i read
sorry if i have upset you and keep up the good work
wagoon69 ·
Dude stop with your posts🤓
cjbolt051 ·
Ven you really do need to think about things before you post things . I did not put this post up to be a battle of builders . It is mearly showing everyone else what i am building and how i am going about it . Some people will think I am doing things a bit strange or not the way they would do it but this is my first build with a limited budget and i welcome constructive critisizm or advice . the VW scene is not that large, most of us know of each other, if not peronally at least by name .I take my hat of to anyone who puts together a car . whether it be a mechanic or a bloke (or lady) in his garage or back shed. Maybe you should do some research before you say negative things about not only my best friend but someone who is always developing cars for both strip and track and is well known as one of the leading Vw people in the country .Iin this course of development there will be "expensive parts broken" if by chance you have a car that is of the standard of the top five vws in the country please start a post and show us all a car that does not break parts
wagoon69 ·

venFun10 ·
hey mate it doesnt look like you will get any time for testing does it?
will you tune it on a dyno at least?
cjbolt051 ·
Common sense says that it is a new car so it will take a bit to get it track ready . and as for the dyno ...If it did not go on the dyno it would not be going to Warwick. Do you think that just because we are in Australia we dont know anything . The Quality of the Australian Drag cars are equal to that in any other country (even yours).I would appreciate it if you did not leave any more comments on this post if they are either negative or just plain stupid

transmission assembly of the gear train . ratios are 3.0 / 2.0 / 1.59 / 1.30 . The gear carrier housing required substantial clearancing for the 4th gear set , reverse gear required substantial clearancing for the much larger 2nd gear set and the Berg pinion bearing plate required substantial clearancing for the very wide and much larger 1st gear set

Car performed very nicely for it's First Outing!!

Well after all the long hiurs and work to get the car ready for warwick we got there and we had a ball. Our team took home five trophys in total which they will post details about. I had a few runs to get the feel of the car and to find out about any teething probs. Such as the brakes, which was only an adjustment issue.i am happy to say The car exeeded my expectation and did everything right..(cant say the same about the driver. Lol). Ended up running a best et of 6.712 @ 100.9mph which was the 2nd fastest et for the weekend second only to wayne.. A big thanks to all of our team especially wayne and ben. It was great to catch up with some of you up there and have a chat. Will post pics etc when we get back

Wayne and i spent many hours on gearing programs and waynes personal knowledge before deciding on the whole gearbox & drivetrain package. It is not that I am keeping secrets but out of respect to wayne as a close friend, sponsor, and for his business. I would ask that you give wayne a call and discuss it . I am sure he can build you one to your specific requirements.

it is a clever idea and I also like it , however the credit for this idea must go to Boris and the guys at Vintage as I saw it on their bug .
I just improved it slightly by taking a pic of an L-bug taillamp and printing it as a sticker to make it look more authentic

Hi all, well it is certanly a change not to have to build or rebuild something before a race meet, but i am all ready for eastern creek . tech inspection done yesterday and paperwork sent of for log book and udl licence. also fitted tyres and new wheels to car and i may be bias but they look good (sorry didnt take pics). really looking forward to catching up with people again, all of the team WPVW cars should put on a good show, looking forward to seeing waynes oval perform
cjbolt051 ·
Well What a great weekend... Heaps of cars , not many breakages , although unfortunately my team-mate Ben was one of them with some engine noises stopping him continuing. This was my first event with the car afer getting it all Tech inspected and i was over the moon with it .
Started the day with two qual. runs:
1st - 10.546@124.46 (60 ft 1.474)
2nd - 10.768@122.32 (60ft 1.512)
because i was under the time set by craig i elected to run in the top VW shootout not expecting any more than my three runs.
the car performed really well with no problems all weekend for the win in the final to take out the top VW shootout 2012.
I also Received the best engineered trophy.
I must thank all of our team for the weekend, we had a few cars at this meet and without there help it would be impossible to manage and compete the way we did . Big thanks to Wayne and Ben yet again. I had a great personal result but as a team we had great results also with wayne fastest vw powered , my car 2nd fastest vw powered, and everybody else all getting new PB's
I caught up with quite a few people that i can now put a face to their names and many of the usualls for a drink and a yarn. all in all a great turnout and i cant wait for Warwick. I dont have any photos yet i got my brother in law to take pics and as soon as i get them i will post pics and timesheets

Way to go Chris!
hypo-vw ·
We have decided to do some upgrades with Chris' bug for the 2013 VWMA VW drags .
I have ported another set of Type-1 heads with 44mm intake & 37.5mm exhaust valves , reset the compression ratio to 9.9 , and I am in the process of fabricating a new larger intake manifold & new larger turbo header .
For now Chris will be using the same tiny T3 turbo & 45dcoe sidedraft weber carb , so it will be interesting to see how much power gain we will achieve with the new improvements
pictured are the new heads next to Chris' old heads which had 40mm intake valves & 36mm exhaust valves with much smaller ports
hypo-vw ·
the cylinder heads are installed , along with new .060" copper head gaskets & new large diameter Scat adjustable pushrod tubes .
After making a template , I get some manifold flanges water-cut & I start to fabricate the intake manifold .
hypo-vw ·
The intake manifold is tach-welded together , I then position the turbo & manifoild where I want it prior to fabricating the turbo header .
The turbo header is currently being fabricated & will be finished on monday night .
Craig Torrens ·
Do you guys ever sleep ?? !!!!! 🙅
humpty ·
Interesting intake knife edge ports Wayne.... And I also noticed you going with the 'Y' shaped central intake... Huge size upgrade there.... Will that lil T3 be able to fill it?
dangerous ·
WOW! That thing is going to fly!
Love the heads!
Doug Sweetman ·
That will have a nice volume in the plenum / intake manifold.... Cool stuff !!!!
hypo-vw ·
we completed the fabrication of the turbo header on Chris' bug on saturday morning before I have to make a quick trip to Wagga Wagga .
The header was all tach-welded together , then removed so that it can be fully welded today and reassembled tonight
hypo-vw ·
Dean assists Chris in grinding back the welds on his turbo pipes
Today Chris' pipes were fully welded & tonight the welds are ground back
The pipes are then fitted back onto his engine to position & weld the in place
The entire turbo system is now removed for cleaning & painting
Tomorrow night Chris' bug will be reassembled & the engined fired-up , then off to the dyno on Wednesday afternoon
westi ·
looks great guy's,
save time buy a tig,if you don't know how to use it,i'll teach you.
free.it will only take one night.
hypo-vw ·
westi wrote:save time buy a tig,if you don't know how to use it,i'll teach you.
thanks for the offer Brad , I do have a TIG at my shop and have been teaching myself to use it on aluminum whilst I have been building the new circuit car .
My aluminum welding is getting much better and I am very happy with the results so far , however I have not had the time to stop and play with it on steel yet .
I will get around to it soon , but for now I am fortunate that we have a good team of members that all pitch in and help get things done , so I can keep productive whilst they clean up after me ( grind welds etc ) , and besides that there is plenty of time for grinding between 6pm & 1am 😂😂😂
westi ·
very true.many hands make light work.lol
hypo-vw ·
last night Chris assembles his turbo system back together after we painted it yeserday
hypo-vw ·
Chris completes the installation , we set the fuel pressure & the engine is fired-up .
A new Aeroflow oil feed line is installed to the turbo and the turbo cartridge is rotated to keep the oil feed line inside the body
The weber carb now also sts outside the body ..... the carb will be fitted with longer ram tubes also
All sounds good for the dyno this afternoon .....

At the dyno now with Chris' drag bug. Having lots of wheel spin trouble but managed to make 294.4hp on 10psi.

vw_dude wrote:At the dyno now with Chris' drag bug. Having lots of wheel spin trouble but managed to make 294.4hp on 10psi.
Any more updates ??
hypo-vw ·
yesterday we did have quite a lot of trouble with wheelspin on the dyno , but managed to strap it down tighter to gain some grip .
The problem we faced was how uncontrollable Chris' bug became when it came on boost . There just didnt seem to be a mid-range area to assess the air-fuels as each time it was loaded-up on the rollers it just errupted !!
It made 294.4hp @ the wheels on just 10psi boost before pushing the copper 0.060" head gaskets out between the head fins .
So yesterday afternoon it was back to WPVW , put Chris' bug on the hoist and dismantle for inspection . Head gaskets pushed out of shape on all 4 chambers but no damage to the heads or the barrels .
I decided last night to remove all of the barrels to install 0.060" barrel shims rather than run the risk of moving the gaskets again . Everything cleaned & reassembled & engine fired at midnight , ready for another dyno session today .
I also decided to run the dyno wheels from my oval on Chris' bug for the dyno session today to gain extra grip and a larger rolling diameter , hoping that we will have more of an opportunity to monitor the air-fuels
hypo-vw ·
fitting the dyno wheels to Chris' bug was a very good move as it gave us the added grip on the rollers and also gave us more time to monitor the air-fuels without wheelspin .
However , on the 3rd power run the flywheel decided to part company with the 8-dowel crankshaft as you can clearly see on the dyno sheet as it lost drive .
Chris' bug produced 305hp @ the wheels on just 10psi boost and was going to make plenty more , looking at the power curve . Luckily this happened at the dyno and not at the track !!
Time for a flanged crank , alloy case & 10mm headstuds I think !!
Smiley ·
Look at that torque!!!!! Crazy!!! 🤪🤪🤪
Smiley 🙂
SuperOwen ·
How close in diameter were the tyres between both sets of runs and what gear was each done in?
Sorry to hear about the flywheel, hope she's back on track soon!
matberry ·
Wow, gotta be happy with that, even broken.
Tests I've seen, tyre diameter and gear ratios will not effect dyno figures.
hypo-vw ·
SuperOwen wrote:How close in diameter were the tyres between both sets of runs and what gear was each done in?
the street tyres used on thursday were 24" diameter on 5.5" rims , whilst the tyres used on friday were M&H DOT tyres 26" diameter on a 5.5" BRM , but had a much wider foot on the rollers for better grip . If there was going to be a change of figures due to gearing / tyre size , then it should have gone down , just as the torque figues showed .
On thursday with the smaller tyres the torque was 1500lbs tractive effort and on friday it came down to 1455lbs with the larger diameter tyres , however with the added grip we were able to get a true power run with greater horsepower shown .
All runs made in 4th gear only ....... both days !!
vassy66T1 ·
Should make it quite an exciting drive 👍
SuperOwen ·
matberry wrote:Wow, gotta be happy with that, even broken.

It has a direct effect on tractive effort figures. Dyno setups vary too much to compare but it's still interesting to see what results are produced anyway.
cjbolt051 ·
After the last couple of weeks of early mornings to go to work then late nights at the workshop, i was both excited and very dissapointed about dyno session. Big thanks to Wayne, ben and dean for their help. I guess we found the limits of a non flanged crank ...lol... oh well we will strip it down , put it back together with new parts and be on the track again ready for the next event.

That may be so, I should have said, 'hp figures do not change'. Back-to-back dyno runs in 3rd or top gears provided the exact same hp plot whenever I've asked for a comparison.
SuperOwen ·
Yeah it depends on the dyno brand, they all have their own particular compensation factors etc programmed in.
hypo-vw ·
the engine is removed from Chris' bug and the flwheel is removed for inspection . Not pretty !! but just as we suspected , the flywheel dowels have all sheared off and the washer for the flywheel bolt has welded itself to the flywheel
hypo-vw ·
new bugpack 84mm flanged crank will be used in Chris' engine . The crank has type-1 mains with type-4 centre main . Bugpack main bearing set is purchased to suit the new engine case . The 5.5" chevy journal H-beam rods are thoroughly checked and rod bolts are replaced
hypo-vw ·
the new CB alloy hi-top engine case has been machined for the flanged crank seal . The crank is installed into the case to check clearances . The raceware 10mm headstud kit has arrived also
hypo-vw ·
the rods are fitted to the crank and the engine assembly starts
hypo-vw ·
the raceware headstuds are installed . The new Pauter 94mm cylinders have arrived for Chris' engine , they are installed to check clearances & deck-height and found to be perfect in every way
hypo-vw ·
Chris' heads are remachined to ensure a perfect seal and the cylinders are painted to protect them from rusting
hypo-vw ·
I have assembled the pistons & cylinders for Chris' engine . I have also assembled the cylinder heads & CC'd the chambers again to calculate the compression ratio .
I purchased 2 sets of CB Performance 94mm barrel shims today & was horrified to see the variation in the 0.060" shim sets .... always worth checking yourself me thinks
I am assembling Chris' engine tonight ....
humpty ·
Nice work Wayne....
hypo-vw ·
well I got Chris' engine assembled last night & after sorting the issue with the barrel shims , it all went together really well .
hypo-vw ·
today the turbo header & the new turbo was installed onto Chris' engine . The new turbo is much larger that his old one . This turbo has a 4" inlet & a 2.5" outlet on the compressor housing
We will now use a 750dp methanol Holley on Chris' engine rather than the 45dcoe sidedraught weber
hypo-vw ·
tonight we made some modifications to Chris' intake manifold to suit the 2.5" outlet on the turbo compressor housing . We also fabricated a mount for the installation of a Turbosmart wastegate into the turbo header
hypo-vw ·
the Turbosmart wastegate is installed and the intake manifold extented to meet the turbo
hypo-vw ·
last night Chris fabricated the support brackets for the Holley manifold . He also sorted & connected the turbo oil feed & drain
hypo-vw ·
last night was transmission night at WPVW . Chris removed his transmission so that I could install his new 4th gear set . After many passes over the past 4 years the 3.44 ring & pinion still look great .
The new 4th gear set in 1.19 ratio will allow chris to increase his top-end speed with the added power that we have got from his engine with the bigger heads & manifolds .
Chris previously ran 127mph and we are expecting him now to run close to 140mph
hypo-vw ·
the 4th gear ratio in Chris' transmission is changed from 1.30 to 1.19
dangerous ·
Great to see the updates Wayne and Chris.
Those thrust faces on the 1.30 are a bit burnt.
I like to use a 091 circlip against the hub
to stop it thrusting forward against 4th.
I just machine a small step in the face of the 3rd/4th hub
so it Juuuust fits in,
and then the hub can not move, and the set end float is there all the time.
hypo-vw ·
tonight I completed the reassembly of Chris' transmission , assembled the axles & brakes , then Chris installed his transmission while I bolted onto his engine the flanged flywheel & clutch assembly .
Chris is reusing his Kennedy stage-3 (2600lb) pressure plate with a new 4-puc cinter-iron disc
hypo-vw ·
we go to install Chris' new engine & find that the Holley manifold is hitting the body .
A quick body modification & all is good
hypo-vw ·
Chris' engine is installed , the 750dp Holley carb is fitted and everything clears the body now
vassy66T1 ·
Wow!!!👍
hypo-vw ·
Chris assembles his bug back together , installs the rear wing & cuts the hole for the Holley intake , fabricates new fuel lines & accelerator cable bracket , and last night we fabricated his parachute mount which incorporates rear guard & apron stabilisers
SuperOwen ·
Who makes the sintered iron disk in a 4 puck? Didn't know you could get them.
hypo-vw ·
tonight Chris fabricated his turbo outlet & wastegate pipes . He connected all wiring & plumbing , flushed out the fuel lines & we started his engine . All sounds very good , will be on the dyno on thursday
20bkombi ·
Fantastic guys, thanks for the updates.
hypo-vw ·
Chris bug has the engine started & all sounds great !! he installs the new parachute , new window net and his bug sits in the workshop waiting for the rain to stop .
When the rain stops , we can get his bug to the dyno for tuning
hypo-vw ·
Well we took Chris Bolton' turbo drag bug to the dyno today at South Coast Rotary and set up the Holley carb & re-mapped the MSD ignition .
We were on the dyno for just over 5 hours and finished at 10pm tonight with outstanding results .....
385hp @ the wheels & just under 1500lbs tractive effort on 19psi boost . The engine sounds really strong and is now ready for the drags on saturday 13th July .....

Had a mixed day today. First couple of runs stalled badly on the line. After getting it back to pits I discovered the staging brake had packed it in and stayed locked at the line. So I tried to drive it without staging brake. Not with great success but still recorded a pb of 10.17@137. Made it to the second round before being beaten. So now it is time to replace brake and make a few minor changes and chase a 9 sec pass. 9.99 is not to far away.Lol ..going to the next test and tune day to have another play. Wayne did well in the dragster but I will let him tell you all about it

cjbolt051 wrote:Once i learn to drive it again , i am sure it will go into 9's Goes pretty well. Now for some seat time and driver tuning
Not just driver tuning as Chris & me found out yesterday ...... we did final preparation on Chris Bolton' bug for the Warwick VW Drags ..... set-up & adjusted the 2-step launch control & all appears to be good ..... we are seeing 5-6psi boost @ 5000rpm on launch & we can adjust it up from there
The way the MSD was previously set-up when Chris drove his bug & used the launch control , the engine had NO boost when it left the start line . I have made adjustments and now have boost prior to the launch .
We went to test the launch & the new staging brake (turning brake) failed . We removed & stripped the brake assembly to discover that a couple of small seals have an allegic reaction to brake fluid . I replace the seals & bleed the brakes , all is good . This would have been so inconvenient if it had of decided to fail on the weekend of the drags .
Chris then did a few launches & he is very happy with the whole package ..... should be fun for him

We had an interesting day today.attended the nsw championship final round. Almost didnt due to it raining in wollongong. We thought it would be in sydney also. Anyway we ended up going up late. Wayne will be posting a full summary of our day. I had 2 runs.
1st one
60' 1.467
1/8 6.186
9.612 @ 141.5
2nd
60' 1.838
1/8 10.154
17.071@ 53.02
Conclusion.... gunna need a better clutch lol. After watching video footage of 1st run i saw how much clutch slip i had(didnt even turn wheels much in burnout). Then on 2nd run had very little clutch at all as seen by times. In al i am stoked at the new pb and excited that there is still more improvement to come with some improvements to the clutch
