https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/9111/1958-beetle-deluxe-trim-strip-set

KDFking ·

i just picked up a set of stainless steel trims that came off a 58 beetle.they are supposidly ment to go on both sides and show a second color.there are 6 pieces short and long and they look exactly like the normal vw chrome trim strips exept they are curved.i got them off an ebayer when i picked up a set of hubcaps i won he threw them in for an extra $50.ill post a pic in the morning but does anybody know if they are original vw or some sort of aftermarket thing???and if so what are they worth?any help would be appreciated!thanks

type82e ·

theyre called a chrome "flash" I have a beetle with them on and ive been told they are quite rare
theyd have to be worth more than $50 though
marcel

BenettonVW ·

I wouldn't say rare Marcel, but different, and thus sought after. Apparently Dave Becker was saying they were a Dealer option, and therefore could be applied by the dealers..

Menangler ·

Thats right, fitted by the dealer, but made in Australia for VW.
Here is a pic taken in 1959 of a set.

SPRINTSTAR ·

They are rare.....and quite expensive if complete and in good condition.
Cheers,

kustomkool ·

O.K Scott you get me a THERMODOR SWAMPY and i just found out who has a flash!!!!!!We swap.......😀

Unity-28 ·

Who has a flash? Could it be me?????

N!

Bizarre ·

"someone" several months ago was trying to get an early version of a "group buy" together to get some of these made

Damned if i can remember who it was - but he was quoted like $7 or 8 hundred

Wouldnt look any good on a super - a standard only thing i think

decked dubby ·

There are two types. One as pictured above and another which runs parallel 15cm below the original strip.

I have both.

Unity-28 ·

Dubbed, There are actually a few types (how many Im not sure) But more than 2!

N!

decked dubby ·

Now that you mention it, both cars above are different.

Stealth ·

If the dollars are good? ya never know

whatnow ·

a friend bought an oval shell that was drilled for a flash kit. if it came from the dealer that way or they were fitted after???

KDFking ·

hi,heres a pic af the set i picked up.

whatnow ·

i was just flicking through the samba and saw someone in brisbane had a set advertised for US$475 or some sh!t like that.... i think he's dream'n (double or tripple what i thought they were worth).... to be honest i really hope he doesn't get the price as i would like them to stay affordable for us here in australia.

volma1 ·

They are not that rare. There are still heaps around with them. I sold two different sets complete at the day of last year for less than $150 each(one set has 14 pieces and the other about 10 pieces). Might go and pick up another set tomorrow for $20 if they are going for big bucks now.volma

KDFking ·

The set on the samba was mine.I have just accepted an offer of $500us shipping inc and they are going to be shipped to california on monday.i know that that is a rediculous price but when i found out what they were supposidly worth i put them on this website and they are now sold(it took under 24hrs)i was going to put them on my bug but didnt really want to drill holes into her.if you feel so strongly about it then you should sell your set in aus for 150au!!im sorry that i didnt offer the set on this site first but when i heard what they go for in the states i knew that nobody in aus would pay that much for them.so sue me for being human!!!!if you can get them for 20$ a set then buy them...

warb ·

:o

BenettonVW ·

Hmm.. Another sellout.

SPRINTSTAR ·

Leave him alone you hypocrite. As if I don't know how much stuff you've sold on Ebay.
Cheers,
AL

lowdown ·

good luck to you KDFking.
remember everyone parts are only worth what people are willing to pay for it!! i know if someone offered me $20aus or $500us i know who id be selling it to.

KDFking ·

Firstly id have to say that i have been looking at this website for a few years now and i have just started posting. This is a good vw website but it will never be a great international vw website as benaton vw and a small handfull of members really do tarnish the australian vw scene by posting arogant and plain childish views.I have imported at least 10 fold more vw parts from countries like germany,America and even englang in some cases but do you ever hear them carrying on like a bunch of bitches day and night "people are raping our vws" or "all of our parts are being sold overseas".Well i have news for a small handfull of you out there, the reason that the parts do get sold overseas is that overseas vw enthusiests are willing to pay more of there hard earned dollers, and no its not a matter of there currency is better.I know people in the states that are willing to pay 3 times what a part is worth in aus but they are also working for $7bucks an hour(min wage). So benatton and others just like you please dont call me a sell out just because your a bunch of tight asses.Id like to finish by saying that im really getting sick of this topic and im sure that alot of other vw enthusiests from other countries are also. And id also like to apoligise to the enthusiest on this website for being abrupt but i think if this bizzare mentality continues australian vw enthusiest will get a rude shock in the future when they go overseas!

BUGBOY ·

Just think KDF you could spend that cash on some wheels etc for your ride.
OOOOOhhh thats right wheels here arn`t cheap so you`ll need that $500 to buy them and bring em into the country.
Good trade in the end hey.
Best of luck to you.
😎

BUGBOY ·

Got a few bits so I thought I`d stick some on the oval. (taped)
What do you think?
I don`t know if it ever came on ovals due to the fact that oval trim is all alloy and have never seen this trim set in alloy.:thumb

BUGBOY ·

whatnow ·

well KDF i guess you weren't dreaming when you advertised them at that price. best of luck to you for getting it. i hope you do understand why i said what i said. it wsa not meant as a full bitch. i just thought it was an excessive price.
i have been to europe and seen the price of cars and parts there. if i lived there i could not afford to own an old vw.
in australia standard stuff is cheap and i like it that way. being a lazy student still makes it hard to get the stuff i want as it is... (have you priced performance parts lately?)
henry.

edit. nice car bugboy.

Ian Bugden ·

I am relativeley new to this forum, but of late it has been leaving a very sour taste due to various comments made by people😠😠😠.
I know you may feel "cheated" by parts and cars going o/s, but what about the stuff we import? do you here the other countries getting up us???
I know a lot of people got into VW's because they are cheap, but nowdays they are a collectable item and should be treated accordingly. Prices will continue to rise and people will continue to pay top dollar.

I think people need to wake up 😠.and realise that we live in a global economy and if a part/car is in another country it really is no big problem.

We have a great VW community here in Aus, but if things continue that will slowly change and as KDFKing stated this is tarnishing our reputation and credability overseas. Do you really want that????

whatnow ·

ian... as a general rule vw heads in australia are cheapskates.... myself included.
the vw scene is small and getting smaller, do you really want the vw scene here to be just 1500's and super beetles with whale tails and double bubble guards because all of early cars and all of the steel panels have been shipped overseas? 😀

TheGermanFolks ·

making money is god. Dont get me wrong. but charging an ass load of money for parts is bad. I live in the US. and I think you screwed the guy on the trim set.You selling the parts for that kind of price and then broadcasting it on here how much you paid, is wrong. What you just did was set a precidence for everyone else to sell that crap for the same price. just becase someone will pay for it, doesnt make it right. I really want a set of flash, but ill be damned if I'm gonna pay $5oo for a set. When Kustomkool asks me for an Eliminator shifter, I offer to trade for something of equal Value, like a visor. I dont tell him $200 for it. What you did was whack. I hope you serve the same fate as the guy you sold that shit too.

BUGBOY ·

I have never posted about all this OS stuff but you guys are right in saying that they are collectable cars.
Thus making them not cheap anymore.
If you want cheap cars with cheap parts go buy a Laser etc.
Vw parts are not cheap anymore and will only go up.
With such a big following there is a big demand for parts and most of all parts that make your car different from every one esles car.
Answer:
If you what something different you pay for it.
Just my 2cents worth
:thumb

TheGermanFolks ·

if you dont want your parts going overseas, then dont sell them. I understand that some of you do not want all of the Aaussie parts to leave australia, But some people see the VW scene as more than that. Ill sell any one of you and Original EMPI eliminator shifter, or a GTV wheel, for the GOING RATE of the US, because that is how much it is worth. Why would I do that? because it ias the right thing to do

whatnow ·

scott i don't mind stuff going overseas. it is selling it OS at stupid prices, that will push up the prices here, that gets to me.

BenettonVW ·

Here here.. I'm with you Scott.

I always, ALWAYS, try to sell it into Australia first. If you think I am ruining VW for Aussies, then you stick around for 10 years and see what is left at the current rate, and you'll be importing the shit back in and paying 5 times the price that some of YOU folks sold it for. Who pays in the end? Everyone. You just get a fraction of the future price now..

Go ahead, sell it all, it doesn't worry me. Oh, and if you recall KDFKing, I U2U'd you wanting to buy that chrome off you, so don't start bullshitting that I/ we weren't interested. Yeah, I wouldn't of paid $500US for it, and I don't know many that would've, so good on ya mate, thats a good score.. Just don't go saying that I didn't make an attempt to buy it off you first, when you know, and I know, that I did.

[Edited on 9-8-2003 by BenettonVW]

TheGermanFolks ·

its guys like this that skyrocket prices world wide.

SPRINTSTAR ·

I really don't get it how some people constantly harass decent hardworking enthusiasts who sell items overseas and and yet these same people who harass always buy stuff from overseas themselves....next time you want something from the US or Germany, send the seller an abusive e-mail for selling instead of your hard earned cash! As the saying goes, you gotta pay to play...
a
p.s. I agree with Nathan, get out of VWs and buy yourself another car!

helbus ·

This is all bizzare to me :o

Never heard of any of it before with the old EH Holden. 😀

Not my game. I'm going to bed now. <yawn>

TheGermanFolks ·

I agree with benneton, you guys selling all the OZ only stuff will only drive up the price when you want it back. If I sold you all EMPI wheels for $600 bucks a piece, in 6 months id be buying them back for $700.
Sprintstar- Rare or not rare, he tried.

SPRINTSTAR ·

Just an honest question Scott, how many German Folks cars have ended-up in Japan if any? You guys build incredible cars, the sort of cars the Japs love to purchase. I respect the amount of work/love/cash you bestow on your cars...truly an inspiration that keeps the Volkswagen scene alive!

TheGermanFolks ·

its hard to say how many went to Japan, some of our members build car for the sole purpose of going to Japan. But I know what you are going to say, "all of those rare parts or going overseas" Some cars, Like Quentin Dailey's 61 Rag, actually didnt go to Japan with alot of its parts, EMPI popout hinge covers, albert mirrors, rack, and a few other tidbits stayed here, because he didnt want to find more of them. I think I could safely say that over 15 cars have gone to Japan, but that doesnbt compare to the many, many that stayed here.

karmann54 ·

I'm not getting into any of the OS selling argument, a bit too much overheated debate going on over that in general.

However in reply to a couple of queries about whether the flashing trim was fitted to ovals, I have seen it fitted to two '56 models here in Brisbane, one I know definitely by the dealer.

Angus

KDFking ·

Dear benneton, when i u2u you back i was already informed of what they were worth so why waste both of our time by offering it to you when i only know two well you werent going to pay that,!And im really sick of people like bennaton and thegermanfolks that preach like there all high and mighty when everyone must know that they would have made therefair share selling parts from australia. And by the way thegermanfolk i wasnt "braudcasting" the sale of the trims i was just confirming that they were mine from the previous posting.Anyway it all comes down to supply and demand(yes thegermanfolk i dont push the prices up,but i wish i had that magical power),i really want a schwimmwagen but the price has trippled in the last ten years because more people want them and they cost $60000US and if i want one thats what i have to pay(now if you dont understand that than go back to grade 8 econimics)!!I would like to finish on this one note, that i really have hated posting with such arogant and very stupid people(just the minority i might add)thanks Andreas!

SPRINTSTAR ·

Amen....

SPRINTSTAR ·

and one more time...you have to pay to play....

SPRINTSTAR ·

......

KDFking ·

really nice zwitter sprintster!!!!!!!!!!

kustomkool ·

Your a f!!!ckin wak sell out KDFKING you can say what ya want but you capitalised on something you didnt even know what the f!!k was.And about your international comment i think losers like you will have to watch ya back overseas...
Dont dis my Brothers..

KDFking ·

dear kustomkool, why dont you stick your comment up your f##cken a$$ you f##cken wan##r!!!!!!!!!!!

KDFking ·

buy the way kustomkool if you read my post properly i was stating that many people from overseas look at this website and if you continue to air these stupid ideas IN THE FUTURE it is very possible it will reflect on all australian enthusiests when they are overseas! If this is your intention please continue as this will only isolate all vw australian enthusiats from the worldwide vw scene(which in my opinion is very sad)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KDFking ·

I will not continue to post on a website with so many narrow minded comments.have a nice life Andreas!!!!

kustomkool ·

And dont come back yo bitch:

kustomkool ·

It seems you ripping people off issolates yourself from the International scene I have no problems helping friends in the states and europe out and not once have I added a single cent on what I have scored for em and vice verser thats stuartip people working together not f!!!cking charging some poor bastard 500 for a f!!!cken flash.Really question your own morals andreas and f!!!ck off.

BenettonVW ·

This is getting out of control.

We may have to agree to disagree.

Mr Bubble Head ·

Come on girls put down your handbags and enjoy what were all here for !!!!!!

david ·

if some dopey bastard with too much money wants to pay that well more him the fool i think there are slightly more flash strips around than schwimmer wagons , i think i might start making these famed solid gold flashes my self if some bean heads are prepared to pay $800 - $900 aussie dollars for them
david:o:o

whatnow ·

i have to comment again. KDF. honestly who is going to make australian vw heads look worse? the people who say they don't want stuff sold overseas (not that i can remember seeing people bitching about that in this thread at the begining) or those who jack up the prices to ridiculous levels just to make a quick buck?
it is sad to see a fellow vw person leaving due to dissagreements...... actually if it stops you ripping off some poor sod in the future because you don't know what a part is and you have no-one to ask, all the better.
BTW i have yet to sell or buy from OS, but i did give a guy in the US an oval steering column for his car. i had it and would never have used it, he needed one.... yes i had an idea what it was worth but i gave it to him for what it cost me. ie nothing.

ok. end bitch here.

Craig Torrens ·

more bitching than the 1916 thread 😀

:cry

Maybe we should be buying Hyundai excels and storing them, I'm sure in 30-40 years time there will be a Forum of die hard buyers/sellers, having the same arguements !!!:vader

TheGermanFolks ·

some people will never get it. Just because somene will pay for it, doesnt make it right. Its called INTEGRITY> look it up.

TheGermanFolks ·

KDF, for a better explinationclick here, it should help you understand what im thinking.

vw54 ·

I took a few pics at The Day Of last year in Melb I remember seeing about 5 or 6 different type of side strips.

Both shape of the trim and the way they were fitted to the cars aswell.

Brad ·

Man you guys need to just melow out...

I am also keen to get a copy of the world wide price list which you use to decide what has value and what doesn't, if you can't supply it I am keen to see your certificate of "GOD" status that gives you the rights to value VW parts the world over.

You are all very very funny, to argue about something on which you can only comment if you your self have never done it and we have all done it so we should not argue. :o

In short I know that most of the people on here have at some time sold stuff to the USA for no other reason than to MAKE MONEY, I do it and I buy from them to sell here and the process goes on.

Do I feel a need to abuse people in grade 10 language to shown my smarts ??? mmm no I just go onto some more American forums and get me some more USA stuff and sell some more Aussie stuff. Now what was the point of all this again ??

Oh yeah that is right, if someone wants to pay heaps why does that mean he is getting ripped off ? It just means he wants it more, ever been to an auction ? price don't always reflect value, and value don't always reflect price... In fact if they ever meet it is only in the mind of the new owner.

Build a bridge and get over it people, this is helping NO ONE .....😘kiss

squizy ·

"....oh my gosh....what is happening":jesus

Chill out dudes. We do it, cos we love it. No matter what the cost😎

Squiz.....

BenettonVW ·

As I said, forget it. Each to their own, but I think we know where we all stand.
