broken cv boots
https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/91173/broken-cv-boots
Hi ive just recently changed my baja from swing axle to irs. I have been driving it for 6 weeks now and 3 of the cv boots have split. Im just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if theres away from preventing this. I filled boots with grease dont no if this would cause it to split?

Were they new? If they were the answer is fit German boots, if there weren't new, the answer is fit German boots.... 馃檪

you dont fill the boot with grease 馃お you put grease in the cv joint & balls then put the boot on. 馃槉and if the car is raised the angle of the shafts maybe be to much.??

Firstly You are not supposed to fill the boots with grease...
ONLY the CV Joints .... with lithium based MOLY grease
but I do put a lot of grease in mine.. lol
I found rubber boots do crack... maybe NOS ???
and after a short period of time..
but I have found the colored boots are made from polyuethane which is much better than rubber...
excellent stuff...
had the same experience with a magna years ago...
cheers

Does noone else really like the idea of the toyota boot, souns like a really cheap self servicable item that should last a long time. I wonder if the smaller section would fit type 1 CVs? I'l post and see what comes.
matberry 路
I have German Type 1 boots or German Wurth branded '2 sizes fits all' generic fit any car cv boots. Give me a call if you want any Barry.
ancientbugger 路
Hi Matt, this was Mick using my login!!! Yes he will get some from you and he'll probably need 4 so if you could let us know how much then he can get the cash out and we'll pop around Friday if that's OK, cheers.

No probs

Mat would know a good CV Boot as He has had experience with them..
and probably with inferior ones too, lol
I have a New CV joint boot still in its box I bought years ago..
and You can cut it to suit many size axles and cv joint sizes..
Don't know if it will fit VWs.. lol
must have bought it for a Mitsubishi..lol
looks good quality..
NOS rubber boots aren't probably a good idea.. lol
as they are already old when You buy them... lol

Well the new ones have now split as well so Mick is looking for new ideas馃檨
matberry 路
Doh !!!
They were the Lobro boots IIRC
I'll investigate a credit and a swap to the Wurth boots, the rubber looked very nice. but not sure re; size.

Here is a pic of a repco generic cv joint boot
fits just about anything
came with stainless steel bands to hold on
large high quality zip ties will also work

Matt I checked this afternoon and they were the Wurth ones. I tend to believe the problem lies with the fact that Mick has the suspension raised so much that the boots are always at an acute angle but he's never going to listen to me馃槧
ancientbugger 路
Hey Lee, where'd you get the coloured boots from?
matberry 路
Don't go there, was my experience with the coloured boots. Anyone else?
chillihilli 路
Did you put a hose clamp on the driveshaft side? I'm told this can make boots split and the "keep your old vw alive " book says to put a hoseclamp on them. Original vw driveshafts also had a clamp on them.
ancientbugger 路
No clamp onto the driveshaft just to the cv but all boots have split at both gearbox and wheel!
matberry 路
Has he notched the spring plates or ground down the lower stops for more down travel? May be an axle length/angle issue. If at a high angle, did he pull the inners along towards the centre of the axle? Sometimes if at extreme angles the axle spline will rub on the inner ribs of the boot. Check how they split.

Hiancientbugger wrote:Hey Lee,

I found them on ebay
My new rubber ones lasted a very short time
and both cracked badly...
I changed them before they split right thru..
not sure where You can get the colored polypropylene boots
but its much stronger than rubber...
can't say I've seen any for sale in Australia..
I've never used clamps on the VW axles , but I used to use large thick cable ties on My Mitsubishis..
Lee
ancientbugger 路
Matt no the springplates aren't notched and the boots appear to be split around the middle of their length. They're not pulled or stressed in any way as far as I could see

Hi its mick speaking. recently bought new carb for my baja and its running the best it eva has since ive had it. Dying to go offroad but all 4 cv boots are practically split in half now so i cant go offroad. I havnt done any offroading with these cv boots so i havnt been rough with them. If anyone has any good ideas let me know thanks. I was wondering if theres special boots for those super high racing dune buggies. Just trying to think of ideas.
68AutoBug 路
these are polypropylene so they are super tough...matberry wrote:Don't go there, was my experience with the coloured boots. Anyone else?
I don't think these will crack at all...
polypropylene is the BEST... whatever color..
I'll have to keep looking for others.. now..
LEE
PS: most colored parts like colored distributor caps are rubbish

Just an update - Michael got the boots that Lee (68autobug) suggested and he fitted them Friday. I'm always telling my sons that the most important tool is the workshop manual, anyway he grabs one of my old tatty ones and when the driveshaft is in pieces he reads to me that VW advised leaving the convex/concave washer off when servicing the cvs'. Now this is only in one of three manuals I have, Well yesterday he went up the beach and as expected drove like a nutcase, got home and we checked the boots and everything looks fine so all I can surmise is that maybe the circlip wasn't fitted perfectly because the washer limited the movement when putting it together and probably came off then allowed the shaft too much movement thereby splitting the boots. Just strange that leaving the washer off is mentioned in only one manual?! Any constructive comments welcome.

Hopefully you are onto a win Barry/Mick, Now fix your buggy!馃榾

One car at a time Nick, although I am waiting for a rocker for the buggy and it needs that windscreen, all in good time though.
ancientbugger 路
Oh well, another boot has split already so that lasted about a month. It did come with a 12 month waranty so we'll have to see what happens now馃槵

Barry, custom kangaroo leather CV boots work a treat. But not a bolt on 馃檪
ancientbugger 路
Wow, where could I get some馃榿D Doesn't help though Matt

Any ideas would be very welcome as I have a very grumpy son who's now pissed off with anything VW at the moment. I may suggest the coloured ones just to keep him occupied馃檮

We've tried Wurth boots that are practically the same (very stretchy material) they didn't last any longer.

its strange that with all the front wheel drive & 4WD vehicles using rubber or polypropylene boots on the roads now...ancientbugger wrote:We've tried Wurth boots that are practically the same (very stretchy material) they didn't last any longer.
that don't seem to have problems.???
although years ago I had problems with new boots fitted to a Magna .. and I then replaced them with some very thick rubber made in USA boots.. don't know what brand they were...
cheers

what about in the old days when leather was a favorite material in car and truck bits... lol ?
[Kangaroos weren't mentioned]
[and no harm was done to any animal in this thread... lol]
matberry 路
They don't run high angles all the time, for a front wheel drive, it'd be like driving on full lock all the time.68AutoBug wrote:its strange that with all the front wheel drive & 4WD vehicles using rubber or polypropylene boots on the roads now...

I have no qualms with hurting any animals so long as my son stops bloody moaning and Matts' suggestion so far is the only one I haven't tried yet馃槒 other than the coloured boots.....I wonder how long catskin boots would last as I'm sure the wife wouldn't miss one of them AND I'd be doing something for the local wildlife馃榾
