2442supercharged ·

In 2009 just 6 weeks before warwick vw drags team WPVW decided to build me a race car so we pulled a 1966 beetle from the yard and started. The beetle started out as just put a engine and gearbox into it and go race. Untill Wayne Penrose found a old supercharger and decided to put that on. Here are some pics from the start

2442supercharged ·

pics of rust repairs & narrowed front beam

2442supercharged ·

After we found the supercharger we decided to chop the front off to make it a little lighter and also add spindle mount wheels.

2442supercharged ·

more pics. the slicks are 28/10/15

2442supercharged ·

with the size of the rear slicks we have to make the rear areo guards stand off the body cause we had to do this we decided to dzues fasten the rear guards on. Pics of the battery tray and fuel tank mounted.

2442supercharged ·

me and wayne fitting frontend. rear end choped off car

2442supercharged ·

more pics

2442supercharged ·

rear wing fitted

2442supercharged ·

pics of the rear wing fitted and dzues fastner tabs for the windows. Also a dummy engine fitted with the supercharger on to set the height of the rear suspension and me cleaning the pan take off any brackets we dont need.

2442supercharged ·

after cleaning the pan i found out i need to replace the pan halves. final trial fitment of the rear guards

2442supercharged ·

pan is all most finished. i had to get in fills made to prevent rocks from flicking up into the carby.

matberry ·

Thanks for sharing the build Ben....6 weeks before Warwick.....crikey, sometimes we make it tough for ourselves. 👍👍

2442supercharged ·

the engine that went in was a type 1 92x84 with old superflow heads 42x40 valves C45 cam, H beam rods ,pauter 1.4:1 ratio rockers, 10.8:1 comp.Gearbox was a 1800 kombi box with berg housing welded diff kombi cv joints.

2442supercharged ·

yeah a lot of late nights to get it done we also had to do customer work so we could afford to finish it

2442supercharged ·

finally together the day before we leave for warwick so we had no time to tune the car.

2442supercharged ·

well warwick 2009 did not turn out so good. we finished the car the day before we had to leave so we had no time to dyno it. When i was doing a burnout the flywheel come off the crank and destroyed the engine

2442supercharged ·

after the engine blow i had to start from scratch with the engine. so after saving enough money and warwick 2010 coming up i brought some new parts. Cb bubble top alloy case bug pack flanged 88mm crank pauter x-beam conrods tcs30 engle cam. AA 94mm forged pistons.

Gracey ·

Hey, good stuff, keep em coming!!!😎

dangerous ·

Awesome stuff Ben!
Great read.

Camo ·

Hi Ben,

It's amazing how one can have a pan to build a car and then when you start, the plan totally changes 😂 😂😂😂

Love the story, photos and your car 👍👍👍👍

Thanks, Kevin

Uncle Craig ·

Gday Ben,
its all about the passion, which it shows you have stacks off. Congrats and thanks for the inspiration!!!
Craig

2442supercharged ·

i cc the head to work out compression ratio and what length barrels i need. I got the case machined to fit the flanged crank flywheel seal.

2442supercharged ·

bottom end is together now it ready for heads.Pushrods made to length and rockers put on.

2442supercharged ·

engine complete and ready for fitment.

2442supercharged ·

2442supercharged ·

car is now ready for dyno. I was alittle dissapointed about the dyno figure. I expected about 20psi from the supercharger but it would only make 5psi. But it still made 195 hp at wheels at 7000rpm. Here are two vids of first engine start and dyno

2442supercharged ·

pics fo warwick 2010

2442supercharged ·

well warwick was not so good for in 2010. After getting new engine ready i done a nice burnout staged the car got it off the line it had a bit of axle tramp changed to second and the car turned right into the wall. The impact bent front beam both right hand wheels. After looking at the car back at the workshop we found that the cv joints could not handle it and broke the cage which caused me to turn right.

2442supercharged ·

vid of crash

2442supercharged ·

after getting the car back to the workshop to insepect damage we found the front beam badley bent RH stub axle bent RHR trailing arm bent front frame head bent two broken RH cv joints. I have updated cv joints to 930 porsche fitted new alloy beam. I also fitted MSD 6al-2 programable. I will post more photos later of the new parts i fitted and the ones i am going to fit for warwick this year.😁

Ben,I tried emailing your Signwriter mate about those headlamp decals he did for you- but it keeps bouncing back to me.Is there another way to contact him-I will be needing a set fairly soon-Gary.

hi gary how many do you need. i can get them organised and send them to you if you like.

nbturbo ·

Thanks-may as well get 4-good to have a couple of spares.PM me with what it will cost and I will send some money. Many thanks,Gary.

whathaveidone ·

Can I get 2 aswell????

2442supercharged ·

no worries i will get them organised monday. ben not sure how they will work on your front end.

would like to thank wayne's dad alan who fixed the frame head for me. A couole of pics of work being done to repair car.

2442supercharged ·

front end back from being painted at K&D smash repair. Front beam fitted and ready to go to portland

2442supercharged ·

well portland was really good for me i had 8 passes with a best of 7.59 at 93 mph. i had troublr keeping the front wheels on the track when we let tyres down a little to get grip off the line

2442supercharged ·

more pics of portland

2442supercharged ·

the only issue i had at portland is when the wheels came back down after a wheelstand it broke the LH shock tower.

nbturbo ·

Thanks Ben-let me know what they cost and I will send money-Gary.
That pic of the broken axle is exactly why I wanted mine made like your new ones-fully floating.Where did you get the new ones from?Should be able to keep it together now with that drive line. Are you going to Warwick?

SuperOwen ·

What sort of shock is that on the front? Really stiff KYB white?

i ordered the stickers today not sure when they will be ready. i will be at warwick this year hoping to finally get a pass at warwick with this car.

2442supercharged ·

SuperOwen wrote:What sort of shock is that on the front? Really stiff KYB white?
not sure what they are but it is the cause of the shock tower breaking.

whathaveidone ·

I use pedders 90/10 off an LJ Torana. Plenty of travel and only have to drill out the bottom sleve to fit them

2442supercharged ·

it was only a issue because the front lifted up so far some wheelie bars will fix it

2442supercharged ·

i decided to run at the compact attack at WSID. i decided to change the supercharger pulleys to try and get more boost. the msd ignition finally turned up so that was fitted.

2442supercharged ·

i started making the wheelie bars but ran out of time so did not get them fitted.

2442supercharged ·

i fitted new blower pulleys but when i put car on the rollers we could not get enough fuel into it so the old pulleys fitted.it was my first time on the 1/4 mile track and my first time was a 12.3 at 108mph i did a best of 11.8 at 113mph.

2442supercharged ·

i would like to thank everyone that has helped me get the car ready to race and also at the track without you i would not be able to do any of this . thanks heaps

Bens bug went really well and he drove really good at the Sydney Jamboree , it went nice and straight and he ran a best pass of 11.8@113mph .
This is the first time that Ben has had his bug on the quarter and he is now very keen to go much faster........and I think I can help him with that

STOCK ·

cool
thats great the cars working well going straight etc
11.8 good start
i'm sure the car has more in it
good stuff guys

2442supercharged ·

i have pulled the engine out and pulled the heads of to freshen them up. will have pics up soon

2442supercharged ·

new parts for warwick it is a 675 cfm barry grant demon set up for methonal

nbturbo ·

Well done Ben.It's all a steep learning curve.I am going to Warwick again-so looking forward to seeing your new combo.

Kiwivw56 ·

Things are looking good Ben cant wait to see the new mods at Warwick.Hope to have my car ready for Warwick but, keep with a couple of months to go it will be tight.

i cant wait to see it on the dyno with the new fuel system and ported heads which i am doing now i will have pics of heads up one day next week

Ollie ·

Looks awesome Ben, glad to see the setbacks didn't hinder your love of the car!

matberry ·

Hold onto your hat when you get this thing going Ben...well done 🙂

2442supercharged ·

thanks matt i am hoping for some good power this time with this fuel system and the new pulleys and ported and polished heads and will be running methonal. hope to have heads back on in the next two weeks than fit fuel system i will keep pics coming

nbturbo ·

What are you making the wheelie bars out of-is it ordinary mild steel or C/M tube? Have you had any luck yet with the headlamp decals?

2442supercharged ·

wheelie bars are made out of C/M. the sticker guy was making them this week so as soon as he drops them off i can get them sent

nbturbo ·

Thanks-hard to tell from the pics what size the tube is-looks like about 20mm OD.I need to make some as well,so was keen to know what size you used.

2442supercharged ·

i will check it on monday and let you know

nbturbo ·

How did you go-manage to check on it for me?

2442supercharged ·

forgot to sorry i will check this arvo and put up tonight

2442supercharged ·

the bar size for wheelie bars are 7/8 for the bottom two 3/4 for the top two and 1/2 to join them together

nbturbo ·

Thanks

2442supercharged ·

the stickers got dropped off today so if you pm me your address i can send them to you

venFun10 ·

any pre testing with the new setup?

2442supercharged ·

not sure if i will have time i will see how we go

hypo-vw ·

the new Barry Grant carburettor is fitted to the blower manifold to check firewall clearance prior to removing the engine for a strip down and check over

Ben removes the cylinder heads , strips all the valves & springs off them and attacks them with the die-grinder ....

hypo-vw ·

Ben spends many hours on the cylinder heads porting & polishing . The exhaust ports have been increased in diameter by 4mm just to match-port them to the exhaust flanges .
With theses head mods and the new Pauter super-charger camshaft , this thing is going to be a handfull !!

beetleboyjeff ·

hypo-vw wrote:Ben spends many hours on the cylinder heads porting & polishing . The exhaust ports have been increased in diameter by 4mm just to match-port them to the exhaust flanges .
Fantastic work.

You could get the poor bastard a bench to work on - or at least a stool to sit on. :-)

he must be just blowing the heads down
no way will anyone port heads like that

hypo-vw ·

the new Pauter super-charger camshaft and the Udo Becker 56gm tool steel racing lifters have arrived

hypo-vw ·

Ben assembles his engine in prep for warwick . This time we have decided to machine-up a set of aluminum buttons for the piston pins rather than use clips .

hypo-vw ·

the engine is finished and will be put back into Bens bug before the weekend . We still have a lot of work to do fitting the Aeromotive fuel pump , filter , regulator , the demon alcohol carburettor , all new fuel hoses and fittings , all new oil hoses and fittings , and new breather hoses etc

Stanley ·

Lookin' good Wayne and Ben

and Mr venFun10....man you need to smile once in a while. I see your name in a lot of posts and you seem a little negative.

20bkombi ·

Good work Ben! Love to see pic's of port work and engine builds.
Will be awesome to see it run again.... And with more power too.👍

hypo-vw ·

Chris Bolton gives Ben a lift with the supercharger , Ben then finishes the engine assembly
all of the new Aeroflow fuel & oil fittings have arrived , along with the stainless steel braided hoses

hypo-vw ·

Ben fits his engine to his beetle , we then start to assemble the fuel system . There will be no shortage of fuel supply to the carburettor as the main fuel line is 15mm diameter on the inside . The fuel lines alone hold just over 2 litres of methanol

hypo-vw ·

I remove the fuel bowls from the new Demon carburettor to check the internals and jet sizes . The are 4 main jets ( 2x primary & 2x secondary ) all measuring 3.75mm each ...... geez I hope we dont have to richen the mixture . lol
we also purchase a set of Aeroflow assembly spanners to avoid scratching the new fittings

hypo-vw ·

IT IS ALIVE !!
Ben has done a great job on his engine . We fired the engine after gaining oil pressure and it sounds awesome . No oil or fuel leaks . We will have Bens bug on the dyno early next week and will post results . getting excited for Warwick again this year . Bens new supercharger pulleys now have the blower at 21% overdriven .... should be exciting for him !!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

2 out of the 5 cars that we are preparing are almost complete . I still have 2 modified trannys to build , the engine for my turbo oval will go back together tonight , Chris Boltons turbo engine is assembled and Cindys turbo engine bottom end was assembled last night ..... very tired , but still very passionate about what we do

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I take my hat to your commitment to getting so many cars ready and the lengths you go to get them all there ready to race!!

mactaylor ·

your a nut, hat off to you wayne, good shit!

hypo-vw ·

we put Bens bug on the dyno at South Coast rotary . The engine is not making as much power as we would have liked , I was quietly hoping for approx 230 @ the wheels and about 20psi boost , but the old supercharger is buggered . The additional boost developed this time after gearing the blower up is escaping into the front gear drive .
This time Bens engine made 212.8 bhp & just over 1210 lbs tractive effort @ the wheels with 12psi boost . That is all we can do on his bug for Warwick this year , but he should have a great time with the added power and torque . Well done Ben !!

SuperOwen ·

Time for a new blower,

Good on you Ben!
Not only did you get into the finals this year but also into the 7.0 zone from what i heard!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Congrats Ben on making the final!! Car ran great all weekend from what I saw!!

2442supercharged ·

i would like to thank everyone from WPVW for all there help over the weekend my car ran great all weekend running 7's every run done a best of 7.047 60ft 1.523 reaction .645 98.46mph i did do a pass at 100.22mph. i pulled the clucth out a bit to fast in final and bogged it really bad and ran my worst time of weekend with a 7.976 maybe i will do better next time. once again thanks a heap to everyone that gave me a hand

whathaveidone ·

Well done Ben!!!!! all your hard work was rewarded!!!!!!

dyno session prior to Warwick VW drags 2011

hypo-vw ·

Well done Ben on your very consistant driving and great to see you do so well after the past 2 Warwick VW drags had been a nightmare for you .

Bens times for the event ( in order ) were .... 7.13 @98.46 .... 7.04 @ 98.46 .... 7.34 @ 95.33 .... 7.11 @96.56 .... 7.21 @ 99.77 .... and in the final of the Top 10 shootout against Wally Pemboss , Ben buggered the start and the engine bogged unfortunately running his slowest time of the event 7.97 @ 98.90 .

Again , WELL DONE BEN !! from team WPVW .....

2442supercharged ·

took my car to wsid today for the retro day running in top gas class ran a best of 11.001. today was so good had 3 runs no problems with the car and also came home with a winner trophy 🙂 just like to thank my crew for all there help

2442supercharged ·

i had a great day at sydney vw day running a PB of 10.784 @ 110MPH not being inspected to run 10,s i had to keep backing off running 11.3 and 11.2 untill my engine developed a rattle in bottom end which i found out tonight to be streched con rod bolts so i will be stripping engine right down for a freshen up

hypo-vw ·

2442supercharged wrote:i had a great day at sydney vw day running a PB of 10.784 @ 110MPH
FACT !! ..... the only thing changed on Bens supercharged drag bug between the last 2 meetings he ran was the new accelerator pedal I made for him ....

go figure ? a new pedal = 2tenths on the strip , Ben reckons the pedal was much lighter !!

hypo-vw ·

2442supercharged wrote:so i will be stripping engine right down for a freshen up
so Ben has gone a little overboard with the freshen up of his supercharged drag bug . My office seems to be a little crowded atm . He has stripped the bug in preparation for the new chromoly rollcage , removed both the engine and transmission for a refreshen ..... and I hear a viscious rumour that there is a new supercharger on the way 👍

hypo-vw ·

Bens bug is stripped down

hypo-vw ·

Ben cuts all the double panel from his bug to lighten it prior to fitting the new cage

hypo-vw ·

Ben cuts even more from his bug !!

cam070 ·

That's what I call putting a car on a diet!

beetleboyjeff ·

That accelerator pedal looks expensive. 🙂

Craig Torrens ·

Wow....so what is the weight of all the removed metal ?

hypo-vw ·

beetleboyjeff wrote:That accelerator pedal looks expensive. 🙂
the pedal might look expensive but I told Ben , 'THE HARDER YOU PUSH THAT PEDAL , THE MORE IT IS GONNA COST' .....😂

hypo-vw ·

Craig Torrens wrote:Wow....so what is the weight of all the removed metal ?
we haven't weighed all of the removed metal as yet Craig , but Ben and Chris tried to weigh Bens old supercharger with manifolds and NO carburettor ..... my digital scales only went to 30kg , we estimate that it weighs a whopping 35kgs . There will be a heap of weight saving with a new blower and alloy intake manifold system alone .....

20bkombi ·

Good work Ben, love the pedal !!!
Nice to see a cage going in.

hypo-vw ·

with the assistance from Chris Bolton , Lincoln Jackson and myself , Ben gets a start on his new chromoly cage

strengthening feet are manufactured for the cage legs and welded into place . additional plates will be welded to these and attached to the floorpan assembly .

The main hoop and front legs are formed from chromoly tube and fitted in place to be tach welded

hypo-vw ·

the front half cage assembly is looking very good ..... Ben has made great progress in the past couple of days

hypo-vw ·

Ben has made more progress on his bug , however judging by the following pics it actually looks like he has gone backwards , but the bug has to be disassembled for cage welding prior to reassembly . Had the ANDRA tech inspector at WPVW to take a look at the progress on Bens bug and he is happy with what he see's so far .
We manufacture a nice strong seat mount for Ben and weld it into place

hypo-vw ·

the body is cut and removed for ease of cage manufacture and welding of all the upper pipes . The body only had to be in place for the main hoop and front legs to be manufactured , all other bars wont require the body to be fitted at this stage

20bkombi ·

Great work guys, coming a long very nice!!

Funny, I'm at the same stage with the type 3.
Looks like you are enjoying the bar work as much as me, it all comes together so fast.

Good idea chopping the a pillar and rear sill to remove the body to allow easy welding,
Better than slipping the hoop through the floor to weld and then trying to get around the body to do the rear stays can be tricky.

Keep it up!!!

Dak-A-Tak ·

Mr Andra man didn't mind main cage going to body sills (sill can collaps or bend) not the chassis of car , plus if body comes loose or falls off cage strength is compromised .
I hope the rest is tied into chassis ( front and rear of car and side legs to tunnnel )

What was the bottom rear wards band in main loop for ? you will have to strengthen that area .

I think seat should be tied into chassis and roll cage not sill as it will bend or collapse , then you move then seat belts come loose ( put across bar from front and rear main loop then seat mounts to it )

These are things I found when doing my cage ( yes every tech person has there own ideas )but I was told a beetle should be
thought of as a full chassis car as body can come off in a accident ( race cars are cut up, most don't have standed number of bolts or standed strength any more )

The sills and floor are very thin tin , so can be punched or collapse through in a big hit , thats why you should think of car as a full chassis style car .
Sorry for sounding negative 🙁 (but a person rides along in side and cars are becoming lite weight and much faster .)
Cheers Peter P

typethreeking ·

Pee, i think i remember the cage that brad did for the vwma rat( ben's car) has the bar work running around the inside edge of the sill's and the hoops attach to that and not the sill itself....Good point.

whathaveidone ·

ill have to check!!! I think mine are in the sills at the front but infront of the door pillers but on built up brackets sitting half on the pan half on the sills!!!
Im pretty all this was bought up when chris bolten made his cage, and it turned out alright

hypo-vw ·

whathaveidone wrote:Im pretty all this was bought up when chris bolten made his cage, and it turned out alright
yes you hit the nail on the head with that comment Ben ..... Bens cage is an exact replica of Chris Boltons cage and the same people made the same remarks when his cage was being built also ..... Chris' cage has turned out awesome and the tech inspector was really happy with it as the strongest point along the side of the beetle chassis is the heater tunnel area , and when you tie the cage mounting feet with additional plates into the floorpan as we have done with Chris' mountings (and will do the same with Bens') , this is a far stronger method than fixing straight to the pan with a plate as it can easily punch through on a high impact situation .
Ben is going to run really quick and I want the car safe for him .

hellbugged ·

Im pretty all this was bought up when chris bolten made his cage, and it turned out alright
Exactly... The WPVW team know what they're up to

Good stuff again!

I personally would like to see the windows score a black edging while they're out to cover the green mounting tabs..... They always looked a bit funky compared to the standard of the rest of the car. My 2cents worth right there!

hypo-vw ·

hellbugged wrote:I personally would like to see the windows score a black edging while they're out to cover the green mounting tabs
I agree with you about the windows ..... Ben did say to me already that he was going to paint the black strip around the windows .....
We did have an official at WSID ask us to do that as he was working at the start line area and every time Ben came out to race it looked like the front screen was missing

Dak-A-Tak ·

No one said they didn't know what they where doing or am I the person (same people ) making comments again , Guys .
As there is many ways to do things , it is all ways good to point out other idea's as well .
Yes , I know your not finished yet but it's good to take in and look at how other Pro's builders build race cars to , Wayne .
All good .
As long as Andra tech guy is happy .

westi ·

nah troy it is my car that has the bar along the floor.vw floors and seals are shit.so i thought i would have a crack at making it better.
it is funny how different people do things and swear that they know what they are doin.we all have our reasons.
usually when you look back at what you were doing 5 or so years ago.you realize .
i haven't seen a cage that andra didn't tech.as long as the welds are good and there is a plate on the floor,it will pass.🤪
your only as good as your last job and you can only hope to get better every time.

2442supercharged ·

i have ordered my new supercharger for my car i went with a whipple twin screw type it should be here in 5 weeks or so. i am hoping to have the cage and engine rebuilt be than or close to it so i can get started on making the new intake system. will post pics of blower when it turns up 😁

dangerous ·

What model and size did you order Ben?

2442supercharged ·

Whipple W140AX Supercharger (2.3 liter) / Black / Direct Drive WSC-140AXB-DD
is what i was recommended by the whipple dealer

20bkombi ·

Ben is going to run really quick and I want the car safe for him .
That is a great choice,
and plenty big enough to get you into the nines!

Perhaps even better if you can get it as light as Chris' car!

Would love to see more progress pictures of the cage.
I liked how well Chris' came out,
so it will be good to know that you will be safe with all that power!

2442supercharged ·

i had to wait for more pipe to turn up which it has today so i am working on the cage tonight. will post pics as soon as i can.

hypo-vw ·

after all the cutting and grinding of the body , Ben gives it a good clean to ensure that the grit doesnt leave rust stains on the paint .

and as Ben mentioned , we ordered another lot of chromoly tube in for his cage and it arrived yesterday . Last night Ben made a few more bars for his cage and I cut them on the milling machine so that the joins would be a true fit .

I have to agree with you Ben on the sound of a Blown Volkswagen 👍👍👍👍

Benny's had a taste of speed and now he's addicted..........on ya mate cant wait to see it run at Warwick.

All that torque can just end up in wheel spin off the line on a cold track. I turned the tyres every gear change at Warwick last year.

Nice updates Ben and Wayne.
New set up should have pick-up!
You will be amazed how much fuel a blown car can handle.
Mine was using metanol at about 18lt/min at 7000 rpm, which was about 9lt per run.
This was with the blowers supplying about 4.55 lt of air per revolution.
This information may help when you choose a fuel supply system.

20bkombi ·

Nice progress Ben. Looks like a full set of albins gears, but no super diff or spool?
Are you running the same engine combo this year?

Just a few more late nights to go.... Keep up the good work Ben 👍👍

2442supercharged ·

yeah it is a full set of albions gears with a welded diff and i am running the same combo as before not changing anything still a few nights to go i should have the enigne done tonight than start on manifolds thursday

typethreeking ·

Lookin good Ben, should be good to have a blower that doesn't leak boost pressure, what sort of boost do you think it will make??

2442supercharged ·

i am hoping to run 20 to 25 psi

humpty ·

2442supercharged wrote:yeah it is a full set of albions gears with a welded diff.....

I thought welded centres were not allowed?

2442supercharged ·

i check the rule book and i could not find anything about it

humpty ·

It is something that came up at Kwinana last year.... One of the tech guys at the track was talking to another racer about it.... It could will be untrue, but worth finding out for sure I reckon....
Maybe some of the more tech savvy/aware racers here will be able to clear it up?

whathaveidone ·

How would they ever know?????

scrutineering guy Q. Is that Diff welded???
racers A. No
scrutineering guy. Ok

2442supercharged ·

i have never been asked about the diff

dangerous ·

I was going to keep my mouth shut about this
because I would prefer to make only positive contributions, but...

Welded diffs are not legal for andra sanctioned events. (it IS in the rule book)

It is ones personal choice whether they lie about it or not,
as is your safety, which is the reason they are disalowed.

Correctly made spools are not expensive when compared with other race car parts,
and can be purchased either here, or in the USA.

They are also a good way to eliminate the weak cast IRS iron factory carrier
that I have broken before when I used to run super diffs.

Locally, Dave Stoker has made some, and I am also sure that Albins makes a solid shaft
that will run through the stock carrier, or one of their own billet steel superdiffs.

dangerous ·

Cant seem to find the rule I spoke of in the current rule book.
Perhaps it was a repressed memory from an older time!
Anyone concerned should perhaps ring ANDRA's tech line.

If it were me, I would, as a minimum, get a steel hemisphere cover to replace the factory cast one.

Make sure the welding and housing is regularly mag particle crack tested.

I think it's under the General Safety Regulations for SS/SST in the rear of the book (at work so can't check ATM) Dave.

A throwback to the "good-old-days" when every second Chevyshit with C-clip axles would throw a 28x10.50x15 and Centreline in a graceful loop over the heads of the startline crew coz the welded diff strained the axles........

Having said that, I'm with Dave. Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with it, coz I've had to catch a car that speared into the wall at 100MPH when an axle broke, and that was with a spool, which gives a fair bit more leeway.
But hey, race and have fun man, each to their own I guess.

can you plase give me a page number as i have looked over book and can not see where it says no welded diffs

please explain how a solid spool has a bit more leeway than a welded diff when you break an axle . We are on a public forum here where others read and learn from our advise . Thanks , Wayne

modnrod ·

I meant a mini-spool on a 9" diff Wayne, sorry for any confusion there! Turning into the pit bay you can hear the centre ratcheting and going clunk-clunk-clunk as you turn in a bit, whereas with a solid diff the tyres just chirp and squeal coz it's all locked.
As you know, with a solid centre of any kind, when you break an axle the problem isn't so much losing drive to one side of the car and getting driven sideways under power, it's more of a shock when you lift off the throttle (uhmmm, as you do when something goes BANG! 🙁), and the car now spears in the opposite direction just as quick. The only way to keep them fairly straight is to try to hold a steady throttle foot and get on the brakes smoothly to pull them up. The difference between a welded centre and a machined solid centre is also the metallurgical properties changing on the welded steel, something Dangerous referred to.
Hopefully others on this public forum can now understand why I personally don't like them much.........then again, I always was a bit of a scaredy-cat.

I didn't mean to jump on anyone's party here, I used to run a welded Banjo diff in a 308 Torana for a while, and most people know how strong those things are.........NOT!!! 😂 At least with the VW your wheel and axle aren't gonna fly off into orbit. Apart from the handling issues there aren't any safety dramas with a VW, but then again I'm not an ANDRA tech guy, so it's not my decision to make. You guys do what you feel comfortable with, and have a good race. 👍

whathaveidone ·

that still does not make any sence????? A spool locks the centre, so the inside wheel is always going to "chirp".mine always does!!! It makes no difference to an axle wether the center is welded or a spool if there is enough power its going to break regardles.

modnrod ·

I said mini-spool.
I don't have to say "do what you feel comfortable with" again........
*sigh*
I'm bored with it all, wish I'd never said anything.

By the way Ben, I love your car man. Blown Bug's have a soft spot in my heart, and yours is a really nice one, I'd love to hear the thing make a pass.
Enjoy. 👍

hypo-vw ·

well we ran into a small issue with Bens' engine ..... when washing all parts for reassembly we discovered that the gudgeon pin on No.3 cylinder was bent and had flogged the piston . There is approx .003" ovality in the piston boss which allows the pin to float excessively . This is on the cylinder where the rod came loose .
After a quick ring around to some reputable VW drag racers , no AA or Wiseco pistons could be located in 94mm . So Ben has ordered a set of 94mm JE race pistons from US and are expected to arrive tomorrow .
Meanwhile I have continued with fabricating manifolds for the blower and Ben has concentrated on the body / interior .
The window net , parachute , new blower pulleys and other items have arrived for Bens' bug and he has also lashed out and ordered a RLR rev-6 dual disc clutch assembly , which will arrive in a couple of days .

the bodywork is completed on Bens bug and he masks the wiring and cage so that paint can be applied . His bug is then taken to the panel shop for final prep and paint .

hypo-vw ·

top end assembly starts with honing 0.0025" out of the barrels to gain the correct piston skirt to cylinder wall clearance and the gaping of all the piston rings , then assembly of pistons and cylinders .
I love Bens new piston ring set with a 1mm top ring , 1.2mm second ring & a 2.8mm oil ring . When gaping the rings I have never felt top piston rings so hard ..... they will certainly take some punishment and it was visablely noticable how reduced the friction is on the cylinder wall with the narrow ring set

hypo-vw ·

a CSP oil pump relief cover will be used with an oring sealed oil pump this time . the engine is assembled and the blower manifolds are welded up

hypo-vw ·

our plans with Bens' bug changed a little this morning with the panel shop stripping all of the stickers and preparing the body for a full respray inside & out

tonight Ben removed all of the covers from the cage and suspension ..... his bug looks great !!
Ben then started to reassemble his bug , starting with the fuel system . Tomorrow night reface the supercharger plate as it has distorted through the welding process , install the supercharger & fit the engine back into his bug

Al

tar76 ·

Thats some awesome work there fellas! I to are looking forward to watching this hammer down the strip.

hypo-vw ·

on saturday night we ran into a problem with the new RLR clutch assembly . The clutch assembly was striking the clutch fork casting area in the transmission housing , leaving the engine approx 3mm from the transmission . It was later discovered that the clutch assembly supplied was to be used with an engine plate between the engine and the transmission .
Late last night Ben, Dean, Cayne, uncle Ray and Chris decided to undo months of my work on DTTF (with my consent) and remove the engine to steal my aluminum engine plate .
We took a template of the engine plate before cutting it to suit Bens bug , so that it can be reproduced after Warwick . The engine plate has been installed into Bens bug and the cluch assembly clears with the engine being turned over

hypo-vw ·

Bens engine is installed as the rest of team WPVW assembles his bug . A new exhaust system is also manufactured staring with flaring up the size of the exhaust outlets

hypo-vw ·

Bens engine has been fired-up and sounds great !! Dyno session tomorrow afternoon for both Ben and Dean

hellbugged wrote:Looks spectacular........what was the failure tho?
well after about 15 runs on the dyno making small adjustments , Bens bug was making just over 300hp @ the wheels with A/F ratio of 5.0 , when suddenly it erupted in a ball of fire . This occured at 4pm wednesday afternoon . Ben was devastated after spending so much time and money on his car over the past 4 months preparing it for Warwick .

I arrived back at WPVW with Bens bug at approx. 5pm and Ben immediately proceeded to drain the fuel system to get all of the methanol out as he thought it was all over . While he was doing this I made a few calls to assess what we could do to get it running .

At 5.15pm Bens bug goes up onto the hoist and head removed for inspection . We dont quite know why , but no.2 barrel has split at the top ( running down the bore approx 15mm) , this has caused the seal between the head and barrel to be disturbed , torching the copper head gasket , torching the head and one headstud . Not too much damage considering the size of the explosion . The head has been left with a very large hole in it but there is no damage to the pistons or rings . The cylinder head is stripped for inspection and welding .

Our 1st issue is that we dont have any spare long barrels in 94mm . Ben makes a few calls to a few VW’ers locally while I search through my stock of 2nd hand barrels looking for a barrel that is worn enough to give us the correct skirt to cylinder wall clearance . I find 2 standard length barrels and 1 new racewear headstud . The headnut gets stolen from my oval .

I spend 2 1/2 hours at a local engineers shop after catching him locking his shop to go home for dinner . He die-grinded the head and welded it up for us . He then machined up a support for the 94mm barrel to enable him to hold it in his lathe to be machined . I got him to machine 3mm from the barrel seating face of the 1st barrel to make the spigot into the case 3mm longer . This will support the piston better at BDC . I then get him to reface the top sealing face of the barrel to ensure it is perfectly true . The 2nd barrel is then placed into the lathe and the top sealing face is also refaced to ensure correct seal . We then measure the original barrel overall length from seating face to top sealing face , and find that the first barrel we have machined is 4mm too short (this was to be expected) . We now machine from the top of the 2nd barrel a 4mm thick spacer ring which is used as a barrel spacer at the top of the 1st barrel to gain the overall correct length for Bens engine .

I have calculated that the join in the barrel will be down the side of the piston , but the piston rings do not reach the join . This will work OK as the combustion explosion when ignited will not be directly at the join of the barrel . Well that is all we can do for now to get Ben to the track .

Back to WPVW , I redrill the headstud hole in the cylinder head where it has been welded , reface both the chambers in the head to ensure a perfect seal , hone the barrel to give the cylinder wall a good clean . All parts are washed , the head is reassembled and the engine is assembled back together with new copper head gaskets .
Bens engine is fired-up at 2am Thursday morning (just 10 hours after the engine explosion) and all sounds good . A couple of degrees ignition timing is taken out of the engine to ensure that there will be no detonation and it is ready to race .

The car transporter arrives at WPVW to collect our team cars at 5pm Thursday afternoon whilst Bens bug is still on the hoist with no doors , no front end and no engine lid , and I am still manufacturing the parachute mountings . At 5.30pm his bug is assembled and washed and at 5.45pm Ben drives his bug onto the transporter for the trip to Warwick .

matberry ·

^^ 😍 the dedication. Great to see the team in action again this year. Well done team WPVW

hypo-vw ·

Bens 1st run at Warwick was tidy and straight , but we detected clutch slip with the new RLR rev-6 clutch assembly and his rear tyres were hitting up under the guards as the bug had much more squat than before .

We disassemble his rear suspension and reset the rear torsion bars 25mm higher . We send Ben out for a 2nd run to assess the clutch . The clutch assembly appeared to hook-up in the skid using 3rd gear . The rear wheels are not hitting under the guards , but excessive clutch slip is detected on the run .

We bring Bens bug into the scrutineering shed at approx. 6pm , remove the wheelie bars and rear bodywork , then in front of a large crowd proceed to remove the engine to check and adjust the shimming on the clutch assembly .
There are 7x .006” shims under each clutch mounting post . I remove 2x .006” shims from under each post to give the clutch more clamping pressure . The engine is re-installed , bodywork and wheelie-bars fitted and Ben drives his bug from the shed in just 35mins ….. We still had time to wash-up before dinner at 7pm .

1st run Sunday morning , Ben launches his bug a bit harder and the clutch appears to hook-up and drives out of the hole much better . But now with the extra drive and squat , the rear tyres are now hitting under the guards again .

Back into the shed , we disassemble the rear suspension once again , lifting the rear another 20mm on the torsion bars . Bens bug now sits 45mm higher in the rear than when it was last raced .

Bens 2nd and 3rd runs on Sunday were not so good as Ben could not quite come to grips with my Berg shifter that I had loaned him for the weekend (nothing wrong with shifter) , missing several gear changes and clutch slip starting to re-appear . After his 3rd run I took my Berg shifter from his bug and put it in the sports sedan for Humpty to use . Should have seen the look on Simons face when I removed his gearshifter whilst in the staging lanes with only 8 cars to go before running . Simon did not have any issues with the shifter , so we will blame Ben !!

I installed Bens own empi shifter to his bug and on his last run he did not miss any gears , however excessive clutch slip had emerged …. We need to do a little homework with Bens new RLR rev-6 dual disc assembly and when we get the settings correct I feel confident that he will go very quick . Bens best time for the weekend was 6.99@99mph which put him in the top 10 cars

Lucky for Ben , I was not racing this year and all of the other WPVW cars performed faultlessly , otherwise we may not have had the time to keep him on the track with all of the pit maintenance , as we did .....

fish26 ·

mate, you guys are totally crazy......in the best way possible.

hellbugged ·

Great updates Wayne.

Awsome efforts

hypo-vw ·

Over the past couple of weeks we at WPVW have been spending quite a lot of time on Bens supercharged bug in preparation for the Nostalgia Drags at WSID .

A new set of barrels was ordered and machined to length , installed and all looks great with Bens' engine . A new 65 tooth crank pulley was installed and the 52tooth pulley removed , a new tensioner pulley was fabricated and a couple of new blower belts were purchased to suit .

The blower overdrive was risen from 20% up to 50% and it made a huge difference to the attitude of the engine .

hypo-vw ·

we then had a RAM-TUBE fabricated for the Demon carburettor , modifications were then performed on the rear wing to accept this

thanks mate , the dedication I have for my teams cars only gets stronger with each and every obstacle that gets in our way ......

on thursday afternoon we put Bens supercharged drag bug on the dyno to set the tune with the new larger 50% overdriven crank pulley fitted . After several runs the air / fuels were still inconsistant , the boost was at 25-26psi , and I catch a glimpse of a spark coming out between the head and barrel at No.2 cylinder . Off the dyno and back to WPVW to remove the head for inspection .

thursday night the head is removed and a crack is evident at the top barrel spigot again , however this time no damage to the cylinder head or headstuds .

friday night the barrel is replaced again and it is decided to put the smaller 20% overdriven crank pulley back on that we used at Warwick , to ensure a safer tune .

saturday we put Bens bug back on the dyno and set a very FAT , but safe tune with 298hp@ the wheels and 1530lbs tractive effort . Back to WPVW and we then replaced the 23mm rear torsion bars in Bens bug with new 28mm ones . We also modify the parachute mount and lift it 5" higher , pack all of our gear for the racing at WSID and head home at 9pm .

the rest is history.......

hypo-vw ·

WPVW had a great day at the 2012 Nostalgia drags. We arrived at WSID at approx 7am to greet the guys from CBB and Henry Spicak. Shortly after Steve Muller arrived with his roo-shooter splitty .

Cars were all scrutineered OK and we lined up for our 1st run in the staging lanes. Ben Ford and Chris Bolton were at the front of the line when Benny Gatt came to the staging lanes in his Ford XB 2000hp doorslammer. It was to our surprise that Benny Gatt did not want to race against us, or any VW for that matter ..... probably due to Ben Ford flogging him in the finals last year.

Chris Bolton has his qualifying run with a pass of 10.30@127.25mph , a new PB for Chris .

Ben Ford has his qualifying run with a pass of 10.10@129.88mph , a new PB for Ben also .

Then we find out that the 'wild bunch' boys didnt want to run with us so the VW's were taken out of their class and put into a new class of their own 'VW Nostalgia' , for turbo and supercharged VW's .
Apparently the reason given for ejecting the VW's from the 'wild bunch' was the speed difference between the cars ....... which I found really funny as Ben Ford was running consistant high 9's @ 130+ mph and I saw a Cortina with a supercharged / injected engine run 11.3 @110mph and saw the quick cars in the final doing 150mph , less than 20mph more than Ben Ford was running all day . I just think they got scared after last year .... its all Ben Fords' fault .

So the VW Nostalgia class consisted of 3 cars only . Ben Ford in the WPVW supercharged bug , Chris Bolton in the WPVW turbo bug and Shane Hobson in the CBB supercharged buggy .

The format was Chicago Shootout ....
Round-1 ...... Chris Bolton vs Shane Hobson , Ben Ford bye .
Chris Bolton wins with a 10.81@109.43 on a 10.27 dial-in , against Shane Hobson 11.4 on a 10.99 dial-in . Ben Ford runs a 10.19@131.06 on a 10.0 dial-in .

Round-2 ...... Ben Ford vs Shane Hobson , Chris Bolton bye .
Shane Hobson wins with a 11.4 on a 10.99 dial-in as Ben Ford not only red-lights by 0.075sec , but he runs another new PB of 9.90@132.27 on a 10.0 dial-in . Chris Bolton runs a 10.65@124.59 with clutch slip from the start line , on a 10.27 dial-in .

Round-3 ...... Ben Ford vs Chris Bolton , Shane Hobson bye .
Ben Ford wins with a 9.92@133.71 on a 9.8 dial-in as Chris Bolton breaks out , hard on the brakes with a 10.49@108.55 on a 10.50 dial-in . Chris was doing 103mph at half track and just 108mph over the line . Shane Hobson does a new PB with 10.94 on his 10.99 dial-in to acheive his first 10sec pass . Well done Shane and the crew at CBB .

That left all 3 competitors with 2 wins each , with Ben Ford the only one not breaking out in the last round . So Ben Ford gets 1st in class and Chris Bolton gets 2nd in class for closest to dial-in .

A big congratulations go to Henry Spicak for his win in the 'street machine' class and well done to Steve Muller for bringing out the roo-shooter and putting on a good show . Steves' day ended a little early as he munched a tranny . Also to Russell Sarton from CBB in his N/A drag bug , well done on a new PB of 12.4 . Great to see all of the VW's out there in action , the crowd certainly loves them.....Many thanks to all the crew at WPVW for their assistance on the day .

RodPenrose wrote:I wonder if the boss is a little pissed that you are now faster than him , ROD.
unlike you Rod that puts yourself before anyone else , I put everyone else around me first .

my turbo oval has been out of action for almost 4 months whilst I have concentrated on assisting Ben Ford in rebuilding his bug so that he can go much quicker and safer . In the past I have done the same for Chris Bolton also .

we have purchased many parts for Bens bug in recent times as you mentioned , and it has been a great pleasure to deal with people that have respect for us .

why would I be pissed when Ben gets into the 9sec bracket before I do ? one day you might have a friend , and if he trusts you enough to let you help build and develop a drag bug for him , and he does as well as Chris Bolton & Ben Ford are doing , then you too will experience the awesome feeling I do when I see my team members / mates do so well ....

RodPenrose ·

Well , Wayne , you seem to take offence at my comment . I mean no disrespect to you , but you have been drag racing a long time and a lot longer than Ben , and to have someone new at racing do so well is such a short time is pretty good for Ben . I no longer supply you or your team parts or advice as you and your team have not paid your bill from over 2 years ago . This is the reason why I do not talk to you or do business with you and the way that you persist with continually trying to discredit me on this forum and with your customers . I know the truth and it will not be aired on a public forum as I don't think it is professional of me unless it is called for . I sponsor quiet a few cars with engines and parts and advice when it comes to drag racing . You would have no idea who has one of my engines , transmissions or even a complete car that was given to them as they could not afford to go racing until I stepped up for a deal . You even use a big wheelie pic. as your avatar with a clutch that was supplied by me , with all of the advice I gave you to get your car down the track as you were having clutch issues for the previous 2 meetings , and you didn't listen to the advice that i had given you . This is one instance I can comment on . Maybe it is the fact that I am not even a mechanic , that disturbs you , and that my previous 3 drag cars have all gone faster than your cars . I drag race because I can't drive for shit around corners , but , I am out there with all of my VW freinds and fellow competitors having fun at any event I attend . I don't have to promote myself in the way that you do because I help people out and I am good at what I do . I started selling parts in Australia just to fill the void left in the market . My motivation behind going fast is that I want to be the fastest , ROD.

Hey ben do you and Chris have your 1/8 mile MPH?
I was checking through some of my runs from years ago and they normally picked up 30mph from 1/8 to 1/4.
Does this compare with your combinations?

I think you are onto something there Simon , a new logo for Team WPVW .... lol

2442supercharged ·

It's been a while since I done anything to the car but it is ready for dyno tomorrow with the new exhaust for dyno only

hypo-vw ·

after cracking another AA 94mm barrel on Bens last dyno session , we have decided to step it up a notch and purchase some better quality heads & barrels for his supercharged engine .

In our experiences on both Chris Bolton and Ben Fords' race engines we have found that the AA barrels are very reliable / suitable for up to 250hp . Once both engines exceeded this level of performance ( Chris 305hp @ the wheels and Ben 310hp @ the wheels ) we have had issues with the AA barrels splitting down the top spigot , normally resulting in cylinder head damage also .

Bens new 910 Autocraft cylinder heads have arrived !! Titanium valves 50x39 & K800 springs . Ben wont use the Autocraft 1.4 rockers that came with the heads as we will stay with his Pauter billet 1.4 roller rockers

hypo-vw ·

Bens new raceware headstud kit has arrived and also his new Pauter semi-modular 94mm cylinders . These cylinders have a large flat seating surface to the cylinder head which will keep the cylinders a lot more stable under high cylinder pressure and a far better seal with the 0.060" copper head gaskets and 6-stud configuration .

Bens Autocraft 910 heads will undergo quite a bit of machining to accept the new cylinders , which will entail removal of all cooling fins down to the sealing surface .

hypo-vw ·

Ben has also now decided to go Methanol EFI injection , he has purchased a Holley style throttle body to bolt to the supercharger manifold .

He has also purchased 4x ID-2000 new Bosch injectors and a Microtech ECU

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Fun times ahead!! Got to chase the boss down in that rail and keep him honest!!

hypo-vw ·

Bens new Pauter semi-modular cylinders are fitted to his engine to check clearances & all OK .... Ben installs the microtec ECU & loom , now he starts the wiring to the sensors & throttle body .

We fabricate some flange plates for Bens 910 Autocraft heads and the flange plate ports are machined to the size that we want his intake ports on the heads . I will match-port the heads after I have finished Chris Boltons' engine

hypo-vw ·

today I started porting Bens 910 Autocraft heads . Starting with the intake ports

hypo-vw ·

then the exhaust ports ....

humpty ·

Yeah.... They are big enough. 😁

hypo-vw ·

Tonight we polished the ports in Bens' Autocraft heads , then attacked them with the milling machine to cut them down to suit the semi-modular Pauter barrels

SuperOwen ·

Interesting port design, whats your rationale behind siamesing the ports like that rather than keeping them individual? Certainly out of the box thinking.

hypo-vw ·

Bens barrels are bolted to his heads with the 5th & 6th smaller studs , then are located onto the headstuds to check alignment prior to drilling the cylinder heads for type-1 stud pattern

Ben removes his engine & transmission last night to install his new aluminum spool

hypo-vw ·

last night was transmission night at WPVW . Ben removed his transmission so that I could install his new aluminum spool . After many passes over the past 4 years the ring & pinion still look great .
The new aluminum spool & chromoly drive flanges gives Ben a bit more piece of mind that the transmission will cope with the added power he is searching for from his supercharged engine

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

What brand of spool did you go with Wayne?

hypo-vw ·

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:What brand of spool did you go with Wayne?
Ben purchased his new aluminum spool from Rancho Transmissions in USA . It is an 091 2-litre style , which required the replacement of all associated diff parts (except the crownwheel) to fit into the 002 transmission

hypo-vw ·

tonight Ben installed his transmission & connected everything at the rear of his bug , he finished the wiring for the Microtech EFI , then he fabricated new flange plates from aluminum as that is what we will fabricate his new plenums from

hypo-vw ·

I bolt Bens new Pauter barrels to his cylinder heads , align them with the headstuds in the engine case , then tighten them in position so that I can drill the heads to type-1 stud pattern as the Autocraft pattern has approx 2mm further stud spread pattern on each stud . I use the barrels as a guide to ensure correct alignment . To do this Allan extends & machines a new drill bit for me .

After the heads are drilled I find that No.3 barrel has to be clearanced on the fins to clear the engine case .

After the barrels are clearanced and installed I find the cylinder head gaskets need to be hand-filed to elongate the stud holes for the smaller 5th & 6th studs .

hypo-vw ·

Bens' Autocraft heads are prepared & assembled . The pistons are installed into the new cylinders , the cylinders are painted & the top end is assembled

hypo-vw ·

today we started to fabricate the plenums for Bens' engine & Morgan was kind enough to come and glue them together for us with the TIG .
Bens' engine will be finished & installed tomorrow

hypo-vw ·

I shim the Pauter rocker assemblies to offset the exhaust rockers to suit the 910 Autocraft heads and find that I have to replace Bens pushrod tubes also with wide-mouth tubes to ensure that the pushrods don't rub on the tubes

next problem was Bens pushrods are way too short for his new head & cylinder comination . We contact everyone reputable that we know to try & find a set of really long pushrods (296mm) with no luck at all . We send Chris Bolton to CBB as Mike has a long set of pushrods , but we find that they are 4mm too short !! (thanks for your assistance Mike)
So we send Bens parents to Sydney Thursday morning to purchase & collect 3mtr of 3/8" chromoly thickwall tube & to collect a 205ltr drum of methanol . They took Chris Boltons T4 transporter , after collecting the fuel & the tube they are on their way back to WPVW when they break down at 3pm in Liverpool (Sydney) . An hour later we organise a tow truck to go to Liverpool to collect them & the transporter . At 7-30pm they arrive at WPVW , the transporters alternator decided to stop working & the old battery failed !!
I cut the chromoly tube into lengths & Allan picks them up , takes them to his machine shed & makes the new set of pushrods for Bens engine .
Chris Bolton starts to fabricate fuel hoses for Bens new Boss EFI
Friday morning the battery is changed and the alternator has new brushes installed , the transporter is alive again.....

hypo-vw ·

Ben installs his engine ..... with help from Chris

hypo-vw ·

Ben Ford starts his engine with Pauter cylinders , Autocraft 910 heads , Boss EFI methanol injection & Microtech ECU

cnfabo ·

Love what comes out of the wpvw factory, love it....good luck at Warwick guys

fish26 ·

You guys never fail to amaze me...........awesome work.

Doug Sweetman ·

Gotta love the blower lope 🙂

hypo-vw ·

A quick update on Bens Supercharged bug ...... after getting Bens bug running we took it to South Coast Rotary (SCR) for a run on the dyno to set up the new Microtech EFI & the MSD ignition .

We did quite a lot of set-up and did approx 20 power runs before Kevin @ SCR pulled a little too much fuel out of the mid-range on the tune and the engine pinged heavily at approx quarter throttle ..... He got off the throttle immediately but the head gasket on No.1 cylinder had moved , so it was back to WPVW for head removal .....

several days later we removed the head from Bens' engine & all is well . No damage at all , just the copper gasket got too hot /soft and shifted . We install 2 new head gaskets and head back to the dyno .

We do approx 24 power runs on the dyno again , but cant get Bens' engine to make power !! It makes 332hp@ the wheels at just 4500rpm , but wont breath after that . Now that the blower is 50% overdriven , we are seeing 29psi boost . We are sure that the manifolds that I have fabricated for the supercharger are too small as it makes the boost really early but doesnt maintain it in the higher rev range . We are going to fabricate a new upper manifold between the injection throttle body & the blower over the next week , and then put Bens bug back on the dyno . If we don't see a substantial improvement we will then fabricate a new lower manifold between the blower & the plenums

LOWBUG ·

What size injectors are you guys running in Bens engine?

2442supercharged ·

We use Bosch id2000 injectors

Frallan ·

On the note of the headporting, I thought it was fun.
A famous Swedish tuner Klas Ebbenäs (RIP) built a SC dragster engine way back 25 plus years ago.
He did them out of billet.
Look how he ported them and this is how the engine stands today in storage in South Sweden.

hypo-vw ·

well a few things in life out of our control have restricted us from spending too much time on Bens supercharged bug in preparation for Warwick VW Drags ..... however Ben removed the cylinder heads & I machined a .035" recess into the heads to make a spigot to locate the head gaskets to stop them from moving .
For Warwick we will change the crank pulley to a smaller one so that the blower is 20% overdriven instead of 50% overdriven as it is now .
Bens bug will go back on the dyno for a short session on Monday night to check the tune and will be ready for action .... hoping for a 5 second pass from Ben this year at Warwick .....

hypo-vw ·

Ben Ford takes his supercharged type-1 2442ml methanol injected bug for its 3rd pass @ Warwick Dragway for the VWMA VW Drags against Wayne Fenech from Vintage Vee-Dub ..... and still cant hold the throttle down all the way !!

Ben Ford installs a smaller crank pulley onto his engine to drive the supercharger slower to make his bug more manageable for his 4th pass @ Warwick

hypo-vw ·

Bens 5th and last run @ Warwick for 2013 ..... with the larger crank drive pulley reinstalled Ben has a good pass , but the engine has in intake backfire & bursts the left side plenum at the top of 4th gear .....
