My 1956 Oval Sunroof

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/91278/my-1956-oval-sunroof

vw54 ·

My 1956 Oval Window Sunroof model, turned 55 years old today

I have now owned it for 30 years as well

Over the years its has under gone some transformations

I purchased it in June 1981, after selling my 1928 model A tourer, I was looking for a new project to begin. I found it tucked away in the back of a garage with some 20 other Volkswagen vehicles. I went to look at a 1954 Oval that had been advertised and discovered the 56 in the corner. Knowing the value of an Original Oval sunroof I quickly snapped it up, although It had been cut down into a Baja Buggy ( what a waste )

Upon initial inspecting it was missing the guards, bonnet, and engine lid. I found these scattered around the place and added them to the purchased I spent the next 3 years rebuilding the car and restoring it back to all original condition with original motor and gearbox

Once restored I drove it to work in peak hour traffic for the next 7 years, also changing and modifying engine components along the way

First of I fitted a Ken virgin Twin Carburettor set up which gave the 36 hp loads of extra torque and also made it nippy. Following this I fitted a set of Maico front disc Brakes which made it pull up better. Then followed a Judson Super charger set up, which it still runs.

I took it off full registration in 1990 and used the Car club conditional rego scheme for a few years until 2003 when I stopped driving it and had it in storage as I had just completed my 1965 Sea Blue Sunroof restoration, and wanted to drive that around

About 3 years ago I decided to re restore the 56 and so progress is happening

Have added this pic at the start of the Re Restoration in March 2008

vw54 ·

The start of the Re Resto

nbturbo ·

Very nice car.You have done a fantastic job with that one.

vw54 ·

under the carpets the Original VW Blue

nbturbo ·

So what happened to the sunvisor? Pretty rare find there.

vw54 ·

That's a funny story I was driving to Valla in about 89 or ?? and a very large truck was coming the other way

the attaching bolts may have been loose the vacuum from the truck pulled the sun visor straight off the car, I pulled over and searched the surround paddocks but couldn't find it think it got stuck on the truck heading towards Sydney

Never been able to find another one like it was a genuine VW accessory

I am adding some of the body resto pics on Monday so will add them to a previous reply to try and keep in order

Started making some gearbox gaskets today carnt find split case ones any where

nbturbo ·

Nothing at CIP1- thought they had parts for everything

vw54 ·

Finally found some enthusiasm and have started rebuilding a split case gearbox for the re restoration of my 56

thanks Gary not as comprehensive as your project

Yeah this is the Re Restoration of my Oval the body has been repaired and painted ( grey n cream ) must add some pics

I knew I had a rattle gearbox ( teeth off main shaft 1st gear ) so re building it to get the pan back together

Its only really the selector housing end cover or nose cone call it what you like

I have good material Klinger paper in 2 thickness and scissors n hole punch

not listed on the CIP site buggar

HappyDaze ·

Did you try here, Dave 😁 :-

http://www.vintageveedub.com.au/

vw54 ·

come on Greg you probably have a set in the shed for me

Looks like scissors and Klinger material are on for today

vw54 ·

More Body Shell pics

vw54 ·

Metal work finished and at the Panel shop for filler and paint

lardo ·

I have a couple of sun visors minus the mounting brackets if your interested.
Neil

vw54 ·

Gooday Neil

Are they full metal like this one, do they have alloy strip on the front

vw54 ·

Gearbox now together just have to fit the axle tubes and backing plates

Progress

nbturbo ·

Dave, are you doing the gearbox yourself?

vw54 ·

Yes have always done split case gearboxes there pretty simple only a few measurements done about 15 or so but not for a while now so had to put thinking cap back on

the tunnel cases need a jig or cut away box to dummy up

HappyDaze ·

vw54 wrote:come on Greg you probably have a set in the shed for me

Any tips on making gaskets, Dave ?

My '54 box is back together, however I need to make the 'nose' gasket. Thickness is important, as it controls the bearing pre-load.

vw54 ·

yeah Greg that's just what I had to do

I got some gasket material paper type 2 thickness good quality stuff

you need a ring spacer gasket as well to take up the pre load I have patterns and material if you want

HappyDaze ·

All done now, Dave. Thanks for the offer though. Those early split-case boxes are nice and simple. 👍

Inside the trans is like new...the odometer shows 22k miles, and, judging by the condition of the car, that's original.

vw54 ·

the Xmas break allows time to do some work on the chassis

vw54 ·

Chassis nearly back on 4 wheels

had to find narrow brake shoes the wheel cylinders I had Stainless steel sleeved years ago just had to fit new rubbers

vw54 ·

I measured the rear suspension before I removed it and fitted back the same way 11.5 on the drivers side and 11 degrees on the passenger side went together easy with new rubbers

sander288 ·

blast from the past with the Oval, found this on youtube

vw54 ·

That's 1990 from memory

Stan had a red light on the start

vw54 ·

More progress over the weekend back brakes on and gearbox filled with stinky oil

HappyDaze ·

Don't forget the top-front gearbox bolt, Dave.

What oil is best ?

vw54 ·

you must have magnifying EYES

Stinky oil the best takes days to get the smell off your hands

vw54 ·

more work this weekend

drmator 67 ·

Hows the project going

vw54 ·

The Chassis is now complete, brakes bleed and front greased ready for the body

vw54 ·

More progress over the past few weeks Fitted the new Sunroof cover tight as a drum had to let it stretch for a few days to make it fit

vw54 ·

Also started the wiring fitting the switches and wipers have clean then add some white pen ink so you can see the terminal numbers

nbturbo ·

Beeuteifull - that colour combo is so close to what I am doing on my Hot Rod- I like.Im doing the 2 tone with full body green and the guards in cream and silver running boards. What are the names of those 2 colours?

vw54 ·

Gary

your not going to believe this if you got some grey primer it would match and it you got some masking tape it would match the cream

I don't know the colour name but will look at the tins tonight and see if they wrote the names on them

your colour combo sounds good and different which is good

vw54 ·

Gary I suffer from CRAFT we colour matched the paint to original VW paint chips using the spectrograph

nbturbo ·

Thanks Dave-well done.Really like the Ivory colour.I have a colour blindness problem with greens and reds.First look for me I thought it was green, not grey.

vw54 ·

More progress over the 4 day break managed to nearly complete the wiring making all new harness and ready to fit up the Rally Dash

1958kafer ·

Great work. You wouldn't have the formula for Gunyah grey would you?

vw54 ·

yes took a scan from my colour charts if you quote 286 - 7883 they should be able to mix from that number

nbturbo ·

The Rally Dash is awesome. Are the 2 guages new- look the part?

vw54 ·

Are the 2 guages new
No there old ones I have picked up over the years they were in the car before the centre hole is for a clock its getting an upgrade to a quartz movement using a AA battery the old movement used to flatten the battery in abut 2 days or so

nbturbo ·

Good move with the clock.I have one from an early Ghia that I converted and it's easy to change the battery.Might have another go at the hands.

vw54 ·

Gary

Great minds think alike exactly what I am doing or having done

oldskoolguy ·

Great colour scheme on a great car. Interesting story too, it will be nice to see it finished.
I've been working on a clock too, coincidence! Mine is some random non runner from a Wolseley or Rover I got from a swap meet.

vw54 ·

Mine is some random non runner from a Wolseley or Rover I got from a swap meet.
I think most clocks of that vintage were the same diameter so it will work nice

vw54 ·

Managed to fit the semaphores and terminate the wiring on the weekend have fitted Flashing LED bulbs that are brighter than the stock 6 V globes and you don't need a flasher can

the bulbs cost $50.00 landed not too bad a price

http://www.dynamoregulatorconversions.com/festoon-bulbs.php

Also had my son re paint the Rally Dash in Cream to match the 2 tone

vw54 ·

Saturday night I decided to assemble the rear taillights this took about 4 hours or so

Had to make new gaskets between the reflector and the diffuser I had the light reflector re plated a few years ago they look great

vw54 ·

added a squeeze of Sikaflex to stop the Jesus Chris clips from coming adrift

HappyDaze ·

You tear-arse...rushing the job in only 4 hours !

The 'heart' tail lights on my '54 took a while, too.

Those flashing semaphore are great, in the'54.

1958kafer ·

What flashing bulbs did you use. The 2 sided or the all the way around light?

vw54 ·

the bulbs are 2 sided only cost about $ 50.00 and 3 weeks post

http://www.dynamoregulatorconversions.com/festoon-bulbs.php

Part number is EA2D and look like this you have to fit from the top as they wont fit in the original opening

Greg

they will look great in your Bright Orange lens on the 54

1958kafer ·

Cheers 👍

vw54 ·

I've lost my Dash Ash Tray cover in all the moves and refurbishment

One email to a fellow aussieveedubber and I will have a new one next week

how goods that

68AutoBug ·

1958kafer wrote:What flashing bulbs did you use. The 2 sided or the all the way around light?
The LIGHT EMITTING DIODES [LEDs] are mounted on a circuit board - one either side, so, only emit light from each side of the board.

You can get festoon LEDs for interior lamps too, with LEDs on one or both sides...
very cheap on ebay. [non flashing types] Very bright and low current so they won't drain the battery like normal festoon bulbs.
First time I've seen the flashing festoon bulbs..

LEE

vw54 ·

More progress on the new wiring harness made from scratch

just about finished

HappyDaze ·

I see you're on here with all your mates, Dave.😂

Fitted the rally dash and cleaned up the headlight mesh covers

SunshineKarmann ·

That's feckin cool as!

vw54 ·

vw54 ·

I had a nut, bolt and washer day on Sunday got out all the bolts and die cut the threads to clean up then washed them and sorted into guards, main chassis , outer chassis, bumper, running boards and relevant brackets and correct washers bagged and all ready to use on assembly

took most of the day

vw54 ·

Picked up all the chrome work the other day and decided to fit the bumpers together and make sure all the bits fit and are correct

Included one the front bar are the fog light brackets and on the rear are the reversing light brackets

vw54 ·

and DONT ask what the chrome work cost

BlasterTheRedBajaBug ·

Well now you have said Not to, someone will, it is inevitable lol.

HappyDaze ·

How much was the chrome work, Dave?

The rear o'riders should have a plate [same as the bolts] behind them. Picky aren't I ! 😂

vw54 ·

aint ever seen that before I will check on a few others

DONT ask

vw54 ·

Greg I take it you mean one of these brackets ...

Ive ask the experts myself included and none of us have ever seen this also checked the parts books for Ovals and not listed only the 4 required ... also checked a few Original cars

Is there one on your Black 54 ?? please send a pic

HappyDaze ·

That's it Dave, there's also a square plate that goes under the bolt holding the o'rider on.

If you send me an email I will send back a photo. greg at kirrapak dot com

vw54 ·

Getting there slowly

vw54 ·

Little work last weekend

vw54 ·

The Fog lights took a little bit of work as the globes were shorting out on the body housing, so had to glue some rubber sheet into the backs of the housing to insulate the globes from shorting out

also with help of Leigh fitted a 6 Volt relay to allow the voltage / current to power the fogs when operating

vw54 ·

vw54 wrote:Made a new bonnet liner and electrical wiring cover
How did you make the wiring cover. I have an original for my Dad's '68 and would like to make it look better/paint/recover.

vw54 ·

Opps left out a word there Fitted
But i could also make one if i had the mould in fibreglass

If your dads one is good it might be Ok to take a mould off but I think someone has already been making them in fibreglass

hulbyw ·

The cardboard wiring cover on my '68 was in need of repair however I could not figure out a way to repair it and it look ok (toyed with the idea of paper mache) so in the end purchased a plastic one and covered it in black vinyl. I used a contact glue from Car Builders which is meant for high temperatures and a good quality 2 way stretch vinyl. Turned out quite well but obviously doesn't look original.
Cheers

vw54 ·

working slowly

vw54 ·

Engine bay now finished with new insulation

hulbyw ·

Neighbour gave me his castoff Lukey fresh air extractors many years ago and I ran them for a long time. Eventually had to get some new tubes welded on. Fit and sound was excellent. None of the extractors I have had since fitted or worked any where near as well. Worst for clearance was Thunderbird. Going VS Sport next so that I can regain clearance again. Great to see some Lukey survivors. Cheers

vw54 ·

I had some 36hp thunderbirds on the Oval years ago your right they scrapped

vintage speed are nice and work as well

I had 3 Brabhams at one stage and also a Lukey fresh sir fora 40hp engine it was NOS just sold it

Just have to fit exhaust and complete the wiring should be ready to fire up very soon

hulbyw ·

Managed to give myself only 2 soldering iron burns to my fingers

hulbyw ·

Solder? Why? Crimping is quicker, neater, no burns, doesn't crack and looks OE.

vw54 ·

I like to add strength

beetleboyjeff ·

I agree Dave, I like to solder the connections especially in the engine bay with all the engine heat and possible oil. The crimp-ons seem to struggle I reckon.

hulbyw ·

We will have to agree to disagree. BTW, not talking about red, blue and yellow pre insulated crimped connectors - agree they can definitely let go if not done exactly correct.
Cheers

vw54 ·

I am layed up for a bit
so wont be able to work on car for a while buggar

hulbyw ·

Know what that is like and it ain't fun. Hope you have a swift recovery

WAITING WAITING

pv370 ·

notice you have the preheats blocked off...... do you think they are not really needed for our climate ?????
i only ask as my preheats from the muffler have a few rust holes in them and i wondered how to repair them or even if i should just block them off as you have....

vw54 ·

Yes there blocked as i am running a Jack Braham Lukey extractor system 36hp type which doesn't have heat risers of the tube

The 40hp system has them fitted

They certainly make your engine warm faster when fitted and working correctly, but finding an inlet manifold with out a blocked pre heat pipe is very hard

Also i have the Judson Super charger fitted which will make it warm up faster

Probably if i was in the snowy area might have them fitted

vw54 ·

Hope to get out of hospital next week n be strong enough to be able to finish the car off for redgo

not much to do

vw54 ·

Well after 3 weeks in hospital

Some progress with the help of Wayne F we fitted the Jack Braham Lukey Exhaust and the heater tubes back onto car

vw54 ·

took a few hours to get it to sit correct

hulbyw ·

Was going to say it looks cool however on reflection I will say it looks hot!
Cheers
