Kustom 1302 S BUG - SLIPPING CLUTCH - Engine back out, pics now up!

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/91318/kustom-1302-s-bug-slipping-clutch-engine-back-out-pics-now-up

DylanTheDubber ·

Well i have had for a long time now my signature with what my 1302 is to look like and i finally now have the car and now the re-build begins. 2 Weeks ago i went up to QLD and picked up the car from my old man and braught it back down home. And This is Where the Project Begins

Back Last year in May i bourght a 1972 Superbug from a local VW Community elder named Howie that he had on his farm. I Took it home and started to get into fixing him up but where i had it stored was no longer able to have the bug and i had nowhere for it to go and it also had ALOT! of rust in the body but perfect original floor pans. So i decided to keep the car (well basically) and in 4 weeks i pulled every single part off it till i had a bare chassis and i sold it to a guy in Brisbane who was building a beach buggy and the body shell was soo rusted it went to scrap. But i kept every single part from the car.

Then in october last year i found on ebay a white 1972 Superbug at Fredo just north of Kempsey. I showed it to dad and he wasnt too keen on it and thorght it was over priced at $2400 buy it now.

But it was re-listed and re-listed and re-listed again and again and again and i convinced dad for us to go have a look at it. So we went there and i showed dad that alot of rust repair has been done and its a good solid car an the engine had also been rebuilt and was a good runner. She was ruff around the edges and needed alot of tweeking and tuning to get it right but we bit the bullet and bought it for $1800 cash. We drove it away and back home and i got stuck into fixing it up.

Then in December dad moved to the Gold coast in QLD and took the bug with him. when i came back to port from staying at dads in the christmas holidays i didnt see the bug for months and months. I asked dad if i could buy the car off him and he said alright and was happy for me to restore and customise it and have it as my first car on my licence. So i bourght it off dad for $900 and 2 weeks later here we are now.

I Got it and cleaned it up a bit to the white with black detail

Hey Dylan,

I just had a 1600 built locally and while I am happy with the end result, I kinda wished I had spent that little bit more and gotten a 1915 built up instead. I think Penrose is selling them for around $4500 - I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. But it was only a little more than I spent on my 1600 TP dual carb set up and it would be more fun in the long run. If I had the budget I would have stretched, and if I had the luxury of time I would have waited and spent it on what I wanted.

Just some advice that I have had to relearn time and time again - Get what you want the first time, instead of something that will do and then replacing it later.

Anyway - Keep the updates coming!

Hey Mate,
In Regards to Engine, it can get very costly and $4k - $8k is too much for me to spend on a vw motor that only gonna last about 100,000km if that some if there done wrong don't last long at all. So i will be investing in a Subaru conversion but i have the 1600cc TP here im going to ''tune'' and hot up a bit with a set of Kadron twin carbs, extractor exhasut system, some high ratio rockers and valve work? and then ill dress it up with some bits and pieces and a 36hp style doghouse fan shroud.

From Dylan

Smiley ·

DylanTheDubber wrote:a vw motor that only gonna last about 100,000km if that
Speak for yourself!

I put 90000km on the old engine in my Baja. It was a second hand no history 1300sp. It could have done a million miles before I got it. And frequently got worked very hard offroading.

Provided you do regular servicing, look after the engine and drive it properly there's no reason why it won't last a lot longer than 100000km. Just my opinion.

Smiley 🙂

DylanTheDubber ·

Mate yeah i understand where your coming from and yes the vw engine is very strong and just goes and goes and goes. But what im saying is to get performance and HP you need to spend big and then the engine life span is shortened. So a 1915/1916 or a 2332cc engine usually only lasts just over 100,000km i have been told. Thats why Subaru is the way to go for me (:

But untill then my 1600cc Twin Port motor will get a bit of tuning.

My current engine is a 2054 with twin Kads. I'll let you know how I go 😀 It's been in a little under 2 months now and I've done around 9500km 🙂

DylanTheDubber ·

Lowered the Rear of the bug today with Jeff Walsh, We used Joels Thread, Gregory's Superbug manual and some good ole common sense. Everything went easy and we lowered it by 55mm and we archived perfectly our aim of 200mm rear hight. Was great to have it at a nice ride hight that i wanted so im happy i got that done now. I will post up some pictures of the car when i can bring it out of the shed next. (Stepdads Boat is parked infront of the shed on the concrete slab) I will have to arange to have it moved before i can bring the bug out again.

Before

Then Jeff came around and we pulled the rear end apart and reset the torsion bars to new degrees giving new height.

It's 60mm Lower now and is a perfect height.

DylanTheDubber ·

haha nooo thats looks terrible lol

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

Hey everyone!

I have now lowered the front and installed all new parts and lowered the back it now drives again! Although it looks bit rough and Ratty at the moment due to different Body pannels resulting in different colours on the car. So to tidy it up a bit im doing a temperary Paint job of flatt black so i cant get it back on the road and have fun driving it! $4000-$6000 for Paint and pannel work is outa my budget right now so when i can save up the money to get the profesional paint job i want of the blue then i will get it doen later down the track.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

Well heres where the bugs at. Been really busy and havent been on here much but it in the process of being painted flatt black. It not a show winning paint job but its more of a ratt rod kinda look. It's just to get it on the road and then as time goes on the evolution on this car will be huge.

vinnies72 ·

any progress on this fella? LOOKING GOOD😎

Lachlan VL ·

keep up the good work hope to see more pic soon

DylanTheDubber ·

Yeah ok I will try put some more pics up soon 🙂

I try to spend lotsa time out in the shed not lotsa time on the computer talking about it haha i just wanna get it happnin.

More Info to come soon.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

Well heres where the bugs at now. It's pretty much all painted except for a couple gaurds and a few bolt on pannels. I'm starting to put all the lights in the car and exterior parts. Also starting to do some interior and car entertainment stuff aswell. The engine is all tuned although i will be removing the engine to do the rear main seal, The Gearbox seals, oil cooler seals so on so on cause it is leaking oil.

It's rolling on 14" sunraisias at the moment

New Front Seats, ADR Aprooved and have same style mechanism for forward relese as stock highback vw beetle seats.

12 SMD LED blue interior light

The Ugly engine

New black Carpet for Rear Area under rear window. New black Carpeted kick pannels under rear seat. and ofcorse the ugly very bad hoodliner haha

DylanTheDubber ·

I Have Been too caught up in making the bug look good, Getting the body straight and so on. But now i have woken up a bit. No more Bodywork, Yes it's ruff it's not real straight or perfect. But i dont care how ratty it is cause as long as its low, loud and mean looking (and main thing, on the road) So The Car is going back together now, and will be fixed to roadworthy state. Not that much to get it Blue sliped, It's more the money for rego i have to save. So i will be keeping the page up to date when i can.

Watch this space!

DylanTheDubber ·

Okay so im thinking about what i gottah do to get this bug back on the road. So here is a list that will bring it to almost 100% Roadworthy.

Download the Word Document I have attached.

From Dylan

Lachlan VL ·

better get stuck into it then

SebastienPeek ·

Dylan, did you paint the interior too?

DylanTheDubber ·

what do you mean by paint the interior?

I Painted Dash and pillars and door frames, I Left the dash grey tho it breaks it up a bit and goes well with the black and grey seats and door panels.

P.S Lovin the New Signature Seb!

From Dylan

SebastienPeek ·

Like, all the metal in the interior, did you paint it black?

Yeah man, thanks for the comment, I'm going a 2-PAC black on Zelda some time next year, depends all on money.
Your bug looks tough Dylan, need more photos though!

DylanTheDubber ·

Seb,

Yeah i probly do need put up more pics. but lighting in the shed is very poor cant get good photos.
The Bug is going to a mates house soon for him to weld up mounts and install the new sports seats and do some work on it that i can't do properly or profesionally.
2pak black will look good on your bug it will suit well! I Painted the metal in my interior grey primer and im gonna leave it like that now for the time being. I Reccon it looks good cause it goes well with the grey parts of the interior i have grey rear seats and rear door pannels.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

Well The Rear Left Gaurd i had was given to me from Joel.
It was quite out of shape and looked out of place now i have the car looking more straight so for $50 i could'nt say no to this almost perfect L bug gaurd. Also using this decklid as i realised the bolt holes on the hinges of the 2 slot mesh decklid were totally rooted. So the decklid and front right gaurd and rear left gaurd will be painted then all bolted on correctly.

From Dylan

beetleboyjeff ·

DylanTheDubber wrote:Also using this decklid as i realised the bolt holes on the hinges of the 2 slot mesh decklid were totally rooted.

From Dylan
Dylan, if it is just the thread in the holes, you can use longer bolts & put nuts on the back - if it is the ones I think it is.

DylanTheDubber ·

Yeah i thorght about that and i might do it but for now the German look ventless Decklid is the go 😎

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

Original frilliment design bulb on the left and the 36 LED globe on the right. The LED is Clearly much brighter. They arnt expensive i paid $2.99 with FREE Postage from Hong Kong.
Take a few weeks to get here but they good for the money im happy. The ones i bourght fit into the stock globe possition and work as Tail and Brake lights. I Think i will get the same but as indicators soon too.

From Dylan

Special Air Service ·

Dylan, are the LEDS actually coloured or are they just white lights?

Curious for my own use, as sometimes a really bright bulb will "outshine" the cloured lense of the tailight & make them look white instead of red, orange. Might be the go if they are coloured.

Cheers
Brendan

DylanTheDubber ·

Brendan,

they are Red coloured ones and im running clear L bug lenses. I Will be running smoked lenses soon. The LEDs are Great get em!

From Dylan

Joel ·

If you're gonna run that no vent decklid make sure you prop the top or bottom open otherwise you'll cook that engine.

If you go with LED indicators you'll need the special LED flasher relay too.
I went through it all with mine only to pull them all back out again, LEDs are too directional, even the wide angle ones.
Ok for brake lights but not so much indicators.

DylanTheDubber ·

Hey Guys!

Im up to fixing up all the wiring! (That I havent done already)
I Have done wiring all along the way but right now I'm installing, wiring up and getting to work my Headlights, tail lights, Reverse lights, Number plate light, Parker lights, Horn, Windscreen washer and so on. This work will go in conjunction with soon removing the engine to do the seals where oil is leaking. Matt Ryan came over and helped me with the service on the bug we did the timing and the Valves (Tappet clearance) And when i have the engine out ill do the plugs, leads, Change oil and I'm hoping also a new SVDA Dissy but i might be dreaming a bit there as i might not have the extra funds. Id love a SVDA but the 009 runs and drives the car so it's not all that necessary.

I Will let you all know more soon, with some pics along with it. Im busy studdying 2 TAFE Courses at once, One being Generall schooling (Year 10) and the other a Ceritificate II in Automotive.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

Well i have left the wiring for a bit. i have now lost all head and tail lights and indicators = /

Since i put the car back together i took it for a test drive first time driving it in 8 months. The car went alright although the engine was very sluggish to build up revs like a massive flat spot. anyone know what that could be from? it had exhaust leak and carby side mixture screws were out, would that do it? Im getting new spark slugs in tomorrow and hopefully soon after that a new set of leads, a new performance coil and a SVDA Dissy with electronic ignition. Okay so heres for the bad news. For some reason my NEW RHS diamond cut H4 headlight and bucket fell out and went straight under my wheel and tottally crushed the RHS unit and the bucket.

From Dylan

SebastienPeek ·

Dylan, how'd you modify the seat rails to fit the VW ones?

PM me details, please!

DylanTheDubber ·

New SAAS Seats arnt installed yet, passenger one is in there just sitting there.

From Dylan

Joel ·

They are real easy to fit.

The stock runners just unclip off the bottom of the standard seats.

Just weld some tabs to them to pick up the bolts on the bottom of the Saas seats.

DylanTheDubber ·

I gottah find some old beetle seats first! Remember i had celica seats and runners in the bug.
I May have 1 lead to soem old beetle seats.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

I Put in all new spark plugs today and Here's a comparison from the new to the old.

Old ones were NGK Japan

New ones Bosch

Next will be

- New Performance coil
- Rebuild Carby
- New Ignition leads
- SVDA Dissy? (depending on amount of $$$ i have)

From Dylan

t_tuffnut ·

Ha!

Those old plugs look rooted.

Mine always went like a go cart with new plugs. The rings in the old engine were stuffed and would clog up everything. New plugs were great for a month, then shit again.

Should feel the difference with the new ones.

DylanTheDubber ·

Yeah they are pretty bad aye.

My stepdad said when he drove my bug he thorght it was just like a Go kart ((:

I have blocked jets in the carby (suspecting) I gotta fix that then get a muffler on my extractors and it should run well.

From dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

While I'm waiting for some money and parts to come through for more engine bits, I had a look at my lights. I Now have my headlights fully functional and working. I just need to buy a new RHS Insert and mounting bucket. Insert is $40 delivered and Mounting bucket $45 delivered. I Had to trim the mounting buckets so the inserts would fit because the wedge Parker bulb holder wouldn't clear the bucket. Here is a pic below of my Super White 28 LED's in 1 Parker bulb.

From Dylan

69bug ·

hey dyl,
what mounting bucket? did you have to cut it to fit?
looking good/!

DylanTheDubber ·

They are $35 each from Classic Vee Dub in Sydney. They are beetle headlight buckets for 7" inserts, my inserts didn't clear the parker light housing and wires so i just trimed the inner lip of the bucket.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

A mate came over who's a Auto Electrician by trade and he spared some time from his busy work and community schedule to help me fix my Indicators and Tail lights. All fixed now and 1 step closer to road worthy. New (fibreglass) Glove box from John Sherman (Volks-Conversions) Then the new headlight insert and bucket for RHS will be the next things coming in.

The car is now back rolling again with the new black deep dish vw steelies and chrome vw hubcaps. They now have good tyres all round running;

Front Tyres: 175/70/R14
Rear Tyres: 195/75/R14

I fixed the car up and converted it back to use vw beetle seats and runners instead of the 4 point mount celica seats that were in it. The beetle runners were still in the floorpans but i just had a bit of tinkering to make them work. I now have a old beetle drivers seat and when i get a passenger side i will start pulling them appart to get the beetle seat of the base and put my SAAS seats on them. Planing on putting some fuel in it and getting it out of the shed and driving it out the front to degreese the motor and change the engine oil. Will take some pictures on the weekend when i get it outah the shed.

The Car is about 90% Percent ready to be Registered and only a few od bit's and peices to buy untill it's ready.

So i got stuck in and pulled appart the drivers vw beetle stock seat I had to use the base/frame/runners as a base for my new SAAS Sports/Racing Seats.

One you take the 2 side bolts offand remove the backrest from the beetle seat, the base vynil and spring sections un-clip off the steel frame.

All I Have to do now is Weld some pick up tabs securely to the vw base/frame to bolt the seat securely to the runners.

Let me know.
Dylan, I didn't get a chance to drop over the hose for you, but I left it just outside my garage door if you want to pick it up during the week. Otherwise, I will try and drop it over next weekend.

Hi Dylan

Those seats look a bit high and if you have a growth spurt you might end up hitting your head on the roof.

I ended up cutting the side oval section of the base in half in my sons bug, it ended up looking like very flat U and welded some angle steel running north south and them soem 25 mm tube running across between the two side sections.

Steve

DylanTheDubber ·

Steve,

Thanks for that Information.

They Seem higher then they are really, but I'm not real sure how they gonna be yet cause it will be up to the engineer who does the welding on the bases. Jeff's Bug Seats are higher and wider then mine and he still got his good lol. I Think Jeff's Taller than me too. But yes there is a lot that needs to be considered when making up and securing the seats.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

The Bug was meant to go into get Blue Slip-ed but after a test drive round the block, realised it was only running on 3 cylinders 😠

After we tuned it and got it running good so not real sure whats going on with it.

Also Had Rubbin on the front gaurds from 6" wide wheels on front. so back to Stocks on the Front We go.
a Mate who is quallified ticketed welder welded up plates on my drivers seat frame and then we bolted up and installed the drivers seat, and we will do the same to the passenger seat sometime after the 24th when i get the other seat base.

Weird Problem with the headlights too, with ignition on they work fine but as soon as you start the car the RHS headlight goes out and is only left with the parker bulb working 🤪

What do you think guys? I Can't Exactly See Any damage to Cause Loss of Compression? Someone who knows heads can give us a heads up on whats happning here?

1303Steve ·

Hi Dylan

Its hard to tell from the photos but look for any point were the metal to metal seal between the barrels and heads has leaked.

Were all the head nuts tight?

Steve

Special Air Service ·

first pic looks like a crack between spark plug & valve seat so probably losing compression there, also looks like cylinders might not be 100% seated in the cylinder heads, so losing a bit more there as well.

other pictures look like youve got a major rusty bore, so i'd guess sweet FA compression there.

DylanTheDubber ·

Bolts Were All Tight, Heads Were Re-Tourqued at Last Major Service.

Yes theres a Crack in the spark plug thread, valves look okay to me but idn what to look for there.

Also there tiny bit of rust on number 1 but i scratched off easy as and motor cranks over fine.

From Dylan

Joel ·

That #1/2 head has been loose, you can see where its been blowing the compression out.
Fairly typical of those early twinport 10mm stud engines.
it may be pulling the threads in the case.

bajachris88 ·

Check the barrel surface too where the piston rings slide up and down. It shouldn't be a shiny mirror surface unless worn. Another loss of compression 👍 Rehone and rings and all sorted.

69bug ·

Put some petrol on in the combustion chamber of the head and if drains back out through the port you will know if you valve seats are knackered

DylanTheDubber ·

Thanks Guys!

Will Try All Those Things Suggested.

Joel,
From memory they were all tight but quite a few of them were sized and even with WD40 and other simmilar sprays, the bolts wouldnt come off and the head stuff came screwing out all together 🤪

Good Luck At Last!

Picked up this old block above for $150 and Les Barlin from Taree kindly helped me put it together and attempt a ground start up by bolting up the motor on the ground to a bellhousing with a starter motor on it to test out the motor.

The Motor was oily, dusy, dirty and even has some dust and crap in the inlet manifolds but we bolted everything on and bolted the motor up and it kicked over and started up in just a few seconds and ran well, compression test showed healthy compression.

Just going to put a new gasket kit through it then ill be all good to put it in the car and do a test

I'm new to the forum so i'm seeing this car for the first time. Stance and wheels look tuff! Gotta compliment you on not putting that fibreglass bumper on, nothing like German metal on a German car 🙂 Have to agree with Bizarre about the dark tinted windows.

What exhaust you thinking of putting?

DylanTheDubber ·

Thanks For the Encouragement, I Have put alot of work into this car and even little things to get the wheels and tyres to fit and suspension upgrades/mods and different engines, mucking around for picky ADR Rules for rego the list goes on and on.

I will be doing the windows or i might leave them as is cause down the track a full creme leather interior is gonna go in and it might look sweet being able to see the creme leather as the car goes past people on the foot path or other cars passing?

As for exhaust I'm happy with the stock factory beetle exhaust haha as stupid as it sounds but the car is at a perfect ride height at the moment but the only thing that scrapes on driveways, gutters and speed bumps was the hotdog, the quiet pack and all other mufflers i bolted to the 3 bolt flange extractor system i had on it on the old engine. So i think the biggest upgrade im going to go on my new 1600cc stockish motor is the GT Factory mexico extractors with the 2 angle cut 2" pipes that exit thru stock body cut outs, although i will do a bit of modifying to it. 🙂

The new engine is in and running sweet!

It doesn't drive too good at the moment tho, suspect of slipping clutch i have been told by the symptoms i told someone in the know.

From Dylan

Craig Torrens ·

You will probably need to re adjust your clutch cable now that you have another motor in.

DylanTheDubber ·

Okay, so i should be able to fix this without taking the engine back out? 🙂

From Dylan

hellbugged ·

Yes adjust the wing nut

DylanTheDubber ·

I Adjusted the wing nut just now and made no difference at all to this problem that is happening.

The car feels like it has no torque at all and goes very slow even when foot flat to the floor and motor reving hard.

Could this be in the diff/trans axle?? Or is it defiantly the clutch? I'm dreading having to pull the engine out again :///

From Dylan

Joel ·

SOunds like clutch on the new motor is rooted

DylanTheDubber ·

Arhh Well... Out Comes the engine the engine once again 😬
ill be back on here for the next update when engines out.

Good bye till then everybody.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

So The engines back out again and both clutch assemblys are off from my old engine and the new one and the new engines clutch is alot better then the older one, the pressure plate?? the big metal outer assembly bit is slightly different in very minor ways but the shape and size is exactly the same so i dont think that could be the problem, the disc on the new engine is a SACHs and has alot more meat on it then the old engines disc.

im not sure what to do now, so can anyone tell me what i should check? there seems to be a bit of play in the thrust bearing arm and springs but i dont see how it could be causing the problem i have.

Please anyone help cause all my manuals and workshop manuals and other info i have isnt helping, it's a very strange kinda problem as everything seems in good working order.

From Dylan

1303Steve ·

Hi Dylan

Where the thrust race touches the pressure plate there should be a series of fingers, they should all be the same height, when the diaphragm fails some sit a bit lower.

Use the clutch plate with the most meat.

While the motor is out make sure the clutch cable thread is well lubed so the wing nut is easy to move.

I came to thread late but you may not of had enough freeplay, that's like driving around with your foot halfway down on the clutch pedal.

Steve

DylanTheDubber ·

Steve,

Understand what you mean by pedal half down, but adjusting it didnt seem to do much at all, but i will put everything back in and back together now and see how things go.

I highly doubt it's the engine, i thorght it could be gearbox, but how cirtain are people that it's the clutch cause the clutch was seeming to be all the way out and then all the way in when pushing pedal in? it feels like driving with the handbrake on but not even that cause it doesnt feel like it pulls it doesnt feel like it has any pull power at all in it. Im really confused of why it's doing this and what could fix it.

From Dylan

1303Steve ·

Hi Dylan

When replacing a motor or clutch you should always back off the clutch cable.

Have a read about proper adjustment procedure here http://www.vw-resource.com/clch-adj.html

Steve

DylanTheDubber ·

Thanks Steve,

I Have now got a meaty SACHs Disc and SACHs Pressure plate on it, it the new motor had a lux lem somthing somthing pressure plate on it and i have been told by a few vw mechanics they are known to be shit and slip even from factory brand new ones.

I Am now about to re-install the motor and then adjust the cable.

Hoping for the best.

From Dylan

DylanTheDubber ·

So i pulled out the motor and replaced the clutch assembly and put the engine all back together and in the car and test drove it only to find it no better then yesterday...

Im really getting sick of this and wondering why i am having soo much bad luck with my dub.
I think ill have to give up on it cause i cant get it right, it's one thing after another and all im doing is wasting ridiculous amounts of money.

Im Contactable on 0434631449 when im in service.

hellbugged ·

Okay

So you sure you haven't created a miss match between pressure plate and thrust bearing types?

Did you torque the pressure plate bolts correctly with a tension wrench?

If you take the wing nut off the cable completely is there free play on the arm at all?

DylanTheDubber ·

I Got rid of the lux lem bla bla pressure plate that came on the new engine and put the old presure plate on that i had on the old engine working fine before it blew. the seems to be some play in the arm and it seems to be replaced from a older model as it has the circlip / u clip on the end of the rod instead of an adjusted bolt at the bottom. Im thinking possibly flywheel? as thats the only thing thats different now from before.

From Dylan

1303Steve ·

Hi Dylan

We need to see some photos of what you have, I think Damien is on the right track you may have a miss match in parts

hrastovica ·

Hey Dylan...

Mate this isnt gonna help you fix your car, but i'd like to tell you a story about bad luck with a dub when I was younger (I hope it inspires you to keep going).

Ok so fell in love with bugs at 14 and for the best part of 6 years, collected every vw magazine conceivable to man, and dreamed about one day buying the perfect beetle. It wasnt however until i was 20 that i could actually afford to go and buy my own car (actually back in those days it was enough to know a bank manager, who gave me a loan).

Anyway, for weeks i tried different cars... until I found a "gorgeous" 1970 Turquoise Cal Look beetle.... real head turner. Cal look, single piece door windows, empi wheels, two tone velour interior, saas seats, big exhaust, great car. Long story short, after 6 years of waiting, my car caught fire only 8 days after i bought it... NO INSURANCE!! A 5c coin fell into the cigarette lighter (which was installed in the glovebox), overheated the wire (the fuse didnt burn as i changed it the night before on the advice of a service station attendant who told me "it'll be alright"). Thanks mate!! I was DEVASTATED!

Devastated (and now broke and in debt) I gave up on the car, 6 months later got the car back on the road, took the car for service to a VW mechanic (who by the way is no longer in business). His mech who wasnt experienced working with twin Kadrons, sucked a bunch of carby parts into the engine (the engine worked for a few days, and siezed up). Best part.... he charged me for it. Now i had no engine, dodgy wiring, no velour and no paint (I did have nice wheels which sort of makes my bug one of the first rat-lookers haha)

So the car was off the road for another 6 months until i got the money for an engine. I drove that car for another 5 years and loved it, it broke down one day (vapor lock) so I sold it for a measly $700 to "just get rid of it". Biggest regret ever. 10 years later (just over a week ago), i went out and bought a little bug, which i am now slowly fixing. They do cost money to own (lets be real, they are 40+ years old), but i think its worth holding onto it if you really love the car.

Anyway, I know what it means to have bad luck with a bug, i just hope you dont give up something you love when you are so close to the finish line.

Cheers Mate.

DylanTheDubber ·

Cheers mate for your inspiration, It surely is a story i can relate to, i don't want to give up on it but i have my licence and am trying to start a new life for myself and fresh start and get a career and this car keeps holding me back because everything i do to it causes another problem, and now i am at the stage where it could be the fly wheel but i have been told i cant just buy a new flywheel and bolt it on, that there's a lot of checking and stuff you have to do something to do with the shims or something behind the flywheel.

If anyone can sell me a new flywheel and anyone could give me a hand to change them over and my problems were fixed.. id be over the moon.

From Dylan

1303Steve ·

Hi Dylan

You cant just keep throwing parts at it without proper diagnoses of the issue.

The flywheel wont make it slip unless its been horribly mistreated or machined incorrectly.

Take photos of what you have and upload them, I think as Damien said you may have mismatch of parts.

We can help you online I hope, but this problem seems to be beyond your abilities so you may need to pay a VW mechanic to sort it properly for you.

Steve

DylanTheDubber ·

I Can't upload pics at the moment, i have talked to many vw mechanics about this and they have all said that i have not mis-matched parts and all parts are all correct for my car/gearbox and motor.

i have adjusted the clutch cable many times, and swaped different clutch assemblys, last try will be to swap the flywheel and if that doesnt fix it then tis is all too weird.

From Dylan

SuperOwen ·

How are you adjusting the clutch? This shouldn't be this complicated, it seems like your making some sort of silly mistake, happens to the best of us! Take a breather and try take some photos to upload before throwing more time and money at the car.

Craig Torrens ·

DONT SWAP FLYWHEELS, just measure the depth from where the pressure plate bolts on to, down to the clutch face surface of both the flywheels. Don't create work for yourself, just slow down and look at things logically.

DylanTheDubber ·

Well to Do that I'm going to have to take the engine back out again and then put it back in again after.

Does anyone know of a VW Mechanic i could pay to fix this for me, It's Getting all too much for me and im sick of pulling engines in and out and getting nowhere.

From Dylan

grumble ·

Dylan it is most likely the pressure plate /thrust bearing combination,Craig is right it is very ,very unlikely that it is the flywheel as it just sits there doing nothing basically. Some pressure plates have a thrust pad which suits the swing axle box and if the wrong one is fitted it will give you the problems that you are having or the diaphragm is cracked in the plate that you have. Where are you at the moment?
Cheers Les

VDU.88A ·

Check your pressure plates. these are the 2 different types in most vw. I think what you have done is fitted the one with the ring (green arrow) to your car when you had the other style. In doing this you have caused the clutch to be partially dissengaged so when you have been driving and reving it you have caused the flywheel to become glazed possibly damaged drive plate and maybe pressure plate surface once you do this your never going to get it to grip as all surfaces are now shiny. You can try a bit of wet and dry and de glaze the faces scuff them up real good it may work but your best option is take your flywheel off take it to a gearbox/clutch place and get them to machine it also have them look at pressure plate for damage.

As previously mentioned it is probably a mis match of parts which has caused this problem and pictures will help us figure out what is going on. Look at the pics below and see which clutches you have.

DylanTheDubber ·

Guys, Thank you, but im 150% sure that both presure plates are the one the same as the pressure plate on the right of the picsture it's deffinatly not the one with the ring in the middle.

From Dylan

hellbugged ·

So what type of thrust bearing do you have?

Free floating or with the guide tube fixed to the bellhousing with the 3 bolts?

It is this style throw out bearing ^^

hellbugged ·

Yep

DylanTheDubber ·

Should it be that one or is it wrong?

From Dylan

hellbugged ·

That's the one for the pressure plate with no center ring

Make sure it slides up and down it's guide tube okay and returns right back on the guide tube.... That will be one more thing accounted for.

If you can get the flywheel off, should be able to get it machined locally. That would save you having to reset the end float if you changed for another.

Definitely can get it machined in coffs harbour

Hang in there, these things happen to us all...... I normally have something to tend to on one of my two beetles each weekend........ The only way to avoid the constant tinkering is do a big $$$, every nut and bolt full rebuild.

If keen you could bring the engine up here and we can get it sorted

DylanTheDubber ·

Okay well i am hanging in there and i have made the desicion that im not giving up, i just need to get this sorted asapand i would love to be able to bring the engine up to get it sorred but the car and engjne are both stuck where they are untill there fixed.

The throw out bearing slides on the shaft all the way out but slidig back in it seems to not go all the way back unless you push it with your hand but im only talking the tinyest bit. And anyways i think we can rule out the fork and shaft and the throw out bearing because engaging and disenfaging the clutch is fine but i have afeling the flywheel has been machined too much and so once the pressureplate weaes dowb past a cirtain point it just slips and cabt get grip cause not enough pressure.

From dylan

BorisBug ·

Just read your whole thread bummer on the clutch but it all will be worth it in the end. I love custom dubbs.Standard is nice but they are boring.

DylanTheDubber ·

Got the engine back out now and am back getting into trying to fix this problem, so now that ive pulled the engine back out i can see the clutch disc is quite worn and alot of marks and patterns from last time i put it in this is obviously caused from the sliping and spining. There is some picture below can you all comment what you think about the parts look like and what could be the problem? the depth check on both flywheels shows it has been machined correctly and not machined down too far, although the flywheel that came with the engine looks very shinny and pollished kinda look to it, maybe scored flywheel or something? Let me know what you's think.

OK - good to hear you're back into it !!!

Your bellhousing pic looks to have quite a lot of oil around the place... waaaaay more than is healthy for a clutch. Even looks to be eating into your trans mounts.

Hard to be sure from the pics of the flywheel on the engine and the clutch plate. The flywheel off the engine... while it looks pretty scored, going by all the rust it definitely hasn't had oil anywhere near it.

😂

Are you sure there's not oil leaking from the rear main seal and finding it's way to the clutch plate ??? Doesn't need much oil there to make it slip...

Craig Torrens ·

IMO it looks like your clutch cable might be adjusted wrong........have a look at how far down the thread the wing nut is, it should only have about 15mm-20mm of thread.
Also, if you look at the thrust bearing its right out near the end of the tube its sliding on.......it should be sitting back towards the gearbox, with approx 10-15mm of the slide tube exposed.

So basically your clutch is not disengaging fully (thrust bearing is still up against the pressure plate) and this is why it is slipping.

Your clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel all look like they are in good condition, whereas the "replacement flywheel" would need to be machined before fitting..... but you don't need to fit it. !!!

Clean your flywheel, pressure plate and clutch plate with thinners/ brake clean etc and put it all back together.....then adjust your clutch !

I have left you a phone message, so feel free to give me a call.

Bizarre ·

something doesnt look right with the trow out bearing / drive shaft

Either the bearing is not seated properly or there is a problem with the shaft??

The first pic is yours
The 2nd pic is what I would have thought I should see

Or maybe its my old eyes??

Other opinions??

DylanTheDubber ·

Okay thankyou heaps guys for you input and help regards to this.

Before i put it all back together and put the engine back in for a 4th / 5th time and adjust the cable for the 6th / 7th time, how can i be sure as to what is causing it, cause i have adjusted the wing nut many times and it was no better no worse.

From Dylan

Sides ·

Hey actually looking more closely I think Bizarre is onto something... is it just a bad pic, or has your throwout arm had an extra/different set of "arms" welded onto it ???

Also seems like LHS pivot on the bearing itself is bent out of square... which I woudln't have thought was possible, so it could just be the pic.

Some better pics might help - especially of the arm and bearing itself removed from the trans....

grumble ·

Dylan is the bowden cable full of crap? one of my mates had one recently that the cable was jamming in the tube causing clutch slip as the cable wouldn't return.

very sad day but the engine is back in the car after i adjusted the cable again and cleaned up the clutch and flywheel and put it all back together and back in the car and still yet again it is no better. I can not fix this problem so the car is now up for sale. I am by no means leaving the VW scene but right now this is just too much for me when i need transport and i dont have the time to be trying to work out why it's doing this.

Some good things about the car Below, The only bad things about the car is that the clutch slips and there is 1 small rust job near the arieal that will need some attention, and also a rust crack in the rear engine comparment area around the drainage area of the decklid.

- Rego till December
- Rebuilt 1600cc Twin Port
- Full front suspension rebuild with all new parts
- H4 Headlights (Australian E Code)
- SAAS Sports Seats on factory bases and rails
- New brembo front rotors
- New wheel bearings

Just to name a few, for full list P.M Me as there has been ALOT of new parts recently put on the car.

Why not take to a mechanic?

DylanTheDubber ·

i have spent thousands on it and i don't have the money to take it to a mechanic to try fix. I am qualified up to cert 3 mechanical anyways. im just sick of all the time and hard work and still not getting anywhere.

From Dylan

Sides ·

Dude - don't give up on it. It's a just slipping clutch FFS, and while it may be a pain in the arse and frustrating IT CAN be fixed.

Hell, you mess around inside speedo's which are waaaay more frikken complicated and fiddly. No idea how many clutch jobs I've done, but never been able to pull a speedo apart and make it work again.

😵‍💫

Or the tough love version - give up now and all the people on here who've tried to encourage, advise and help will be left just sittin back and shakin their heads at the Cert 3 mechanic who was beaten by a POS Volkswagen...

DylanTheDubber ·

It's all too hard at the moment for me and yes it really is quite sad but what more can i do, the car is at my mothers place where i cant even live at but the cars stuck here so i can only work on it when i com down for a few days at a time. im meant to be getting a job and starting a new life interstate but haven't had transport for 2 months now and before that it was on a dieing engine with oil pouring everywhere and no muffler on 4 into 1 extractors and people calling the cops on me wherever i went and coped alot of abuse aswell.

Id love to keep it, i would love to be able to keep it and fix it slowly but i need transport and to buy another car i need to sell this to get some money back. it's very depressing but lifes a mess right now and it's only gonna get worse for me unless i get a job and carear and start a new life in a positive direction and get right away from all the bad people and bad stuff that ive been thru. wanting to live a good peace full life now i dont wanna get caught up in bad stuff and the wrong croud as i have been. Things are just a real mess and to fix things i need transport so i can be relaible to get to and from work every day to break the chain of all these problems i have expirienced and the people around me have expirienced.

Bizzarre & Sides you may be right,it looks like the arms have been welded on to strengthen them or it broke an arm off and they have been welded on in the wrong position,we might have to replace the fork to get it sitting where it should be and I am still sus about a cracked diaphragm.

What stumps me is that the bug was fine on it's original engine, then i replaced that engine with the $150 block and had no dramas, now ive changed the engine to this one and it's having all the dramas, what i dont get is if it was the fork or arm then why wasn't it like it on the 2nd engine or the 1'st? nothings broken so if it was wrong then why is it only muckin up now with the 3rd engine when all 3 engines have had the same pressure plate.

I did a depth check and it's at 21 and a half and the little depth is at 1 and a half. This is the same messurement as the replacement flywheel i have here.

The only thing thats left is the clutch disc and it's clean, not oily, meaty and is a sachs disc.

As these guys have said mate, (assuming the engine is stiill in the car) first thing to do now is to back that wing nut right off, you could almost go to the point where you cant actually select a gear with the engine running because the clutch is still engaged. Then work back from there until the point you can select a gear. Then see if you still are having slipp issues.

Bottom line is, dont give up on her yet, it can only be an issue that is contained to throw-out bearing / fork /operating lever / cable / cable housing. Neither of which are a major problem to overcome once you know which it is.

come a long way to chuck the towel in now mate.

Hi Dylan

Don't give up mate, this all character building, your going to have lots of character after this

Looking at the way your clutch is adjusted your diaphragm could be collapsed, do you have photo of the other side of the pressure plate?

Steve

DylanTheDubber ·

i have backed the wingnut off all the way and the throw out bearing and arms go all the way back and i have only got the tinyiest amount of clutch just enough to slip gears. i have adjusted the cable that many times it's deffinatly not it, and ill try get a picture of the front of the pressure palte, but whats the chances that 2 pressure plates that were working are now both not working, i dont think the chances of that would be very high.

From Dylan

Joel ·

I'd be willing to bet a new clutch cable and you will perfectly fine again.

Its either breaking or stretching and doing up the wing nut that far is the only way to get any movement at the pedal, downside being its half engaging the clutch all the time being wound up that far.

hellbugged ·

With some new pictures and everything else seemingly eliminated at this point, thats a fair call Joel

.... Wouldn't be nice to sell the car to hear a $25 clutch cable change provided the fix Dylan !

Focus on how time, effort and $$ are needed to get it right, not how much it's taken to get it this close

Doug Sweetman ·

I agree - maybe a stretching clutch cable, other thing to check is the hook on the end of the clutch pedal where the cable attaches - this can wear thin, break, bend etc etc depending on the life of the car.

Getting frustrated as f&$k is all part of the game with old cars - take it from someone who has sold several cars and later regretted it.

Hi
clutch cables break all the time..
they stretch first [usually] and can snap the strands one by one until it breaks..
and that was with good german cables...
with aftermarket or Brasillian or mexican etc...
they probably don't last as long...

Years ago, I found a campany in the USA that made and sold cables guaranteed for life...
VW clutch and accelerator cables included..

but they didn't want to know about selling outside the USA...
weren't interested at all... lol

cheers
