snitz 路

howdy people..heres some pics of my wifes beetle that I am doing some work on..Cleaning it up a bit so she can enjoy it. This is my wifes first car that she has owned for over 17 years!..

Scat Low back seats being trial fitted before they get a retrim along with the rear seat in red vinyl.

snitz 路

Some parts waiting to go on..Sprinstars will wear 145s on the front and 205 rears..after the front beam recieves a 2" narrowing and spindles. Flat4 wheel will replace the current wood wheel. Does anyone know the origin or brand of the wood wheel..I found it at the wreckers and lacquered it.Only problem is it is now splitting..boo!!馃ゲ

Ive also tracked down some new bumper over-riders for the front and rear bumpers..

Paulc1964au 路

Car will look good there are some great online stores where u can get great deals. Look forward to seeing progress

SebastienPeek 路

Car definitely looks awesome!

Curious as to where the original seats from her will be going/have gone?

LUFTMEISTER 路

Nice Project. PM sent.

byronmcmanus59 路

Hey man just curious to where you picked the car up from or where you are, i think i've seen it around..

snitz 路

Paulc1964au wrote:Car will look good there are some great online stores where u can get great deals. Look forward to seeing progress
Definately some good deals to be had online..The wheels, shifter and seats all came from Wassim @ Vollks..great service and the Gt wheel came from George. Ive also began to collect retro anodised aluminium cups sets and vintage Malleys' eskys..Ohh dear I really do have the bug..lol馃槀

snitz 路

The original seats were standard vw bases with charade seats welded to them..Ive kept the bases and sent the seats to heaven..they were very dodgy. My wife originally bought the car here in Adelaide down at Kensington Gardens. We live in Reynella south of the city and the car has been in storage for about 7 years.Mainly because we had too many cars ( read 7) and no where to put it and also because the motor has a pulled stud in the case and is starting to leak oil..time for case savers or a rebuild.馃憤

SebastienPeek 路

Really thinking those seats look wicked, so I'll definitely have to source something similar anyway as those won't fit 72+ beetles from what I could find.

Glad to see you have the bug fever, I definitely have it too 馃檪

Wannavee 路

Correct me if I am wrong, but that wheel looks to be a Speedwell.
You interested in selling it?
I'm in Park Holme.Reynella is my old stamping ground

snitz 路

Well a bit of an update...Bought a rust free bonnet from SPLITMEISTER that is currently being resprayed in Antarctica White. I've purchased new hood emblem clips and trim clips for the bonnet aswell. Ive also bought a set of 40mm IDFs in a EMPI kit from CIP1 in Cali aswell as a pair of CSP valve covers from VOLLKS all in anticipation for when the car will be heading up to Peter Debiasi soon for a 1916cc motor with C35 cam and big port heads.馃槉馃槉

cam070 路

Yep you've been bitten. Welcome to the club!

snitz 路

I know!!..Ive been too busy working on the wifes Dub that my own project is suffering..馃槀馃槀

Its a 1985 rx7 thats waiting for all the running rear in the shed to be fitted. 13B turbo will a Garrett GT3540/48mm external gate 5 speed and 28 spline lsd Borgwarner Diff. The series 6 based rx7 13b will be ported and studded..will be good for 260=280rwkw on pump fuel..mwah ha ha!!( If it gets finished).馃ゲ

SebastienPeek 路

Snitz!

You seem to have gotten me to kick my arse into gear. As soon as I mentioned Debiasi, Mum knew exactly who I was talking about. Found out that Mum and Dad used him to help with their Squareback at some stage. So I think it only right that I give him a call as well and ask about a 1776 for Zelda.

Also, that RX7 is bloody beautiful!

snitz 路

Thanks for the compliment on the mazda Seb..Yep Debiasi is the go for me. Unfortunately he works from home and not out of a workshop anymore..but worth the drive to get the motor built as unfortunately Ziggy @ GHR Motors isnt interested in doing a rebuild unless its stock!..gees even my wife wants some grunt!..lol Keep up the good work on your beetle..I like!.

SebastienPeek 路

Yeah, I was going to give Siggy a buzz at GHR to see if he had any 1776's around the place but doesn't sound like he'd be interested in such a thing.

I'll give DeBiasi a call tomorrow, see what the prices are like... If you have any information about prices already, you able to PM them to me?
Keep it up, would very much like to see your bug on the road!

snitz 路

Pm sent bud..

cam070 路

That's one clean rx7 you have there. Only problem I see is too many projects not enough time and which one to do first. Terrible problems to have i'll bet

snitz 路

With the way the australian dollar has been I thought I'd rather spend it on the wifes beetle. Alot can be done for so little money where as the Mazda is a money pit..lol.

Once I get out of my current crappy job then I'll finish the mazda. The mazda owes me nothing sitting there so when it gets finished it gets finished I guess.
The time-frame doesn't bother me..the crash shop took over a year just to paint it..then it lived in a mates rumpus room for a year after being painted while I saved to build a shed to put it in..ha ha! then house renos....ahhh F$%K me it never ends!. I just sit in it and make noises..lol.

snitz 路

These were brought home by the wife from work this morning (she works for Australia Post)..Nice quality and came with a free gift again from Wassim @ Vollks. Super fast delivery and great service!..the man is a legend!!. Wouldn't mind a CSP Python exhaust next though!..馃榿

Ollie 路

Bridge or extend port for the brap brap?

Or Jport?! Hehe

Joel 路

Maaaaan those FR-18 Simmys are the Pr0n.

Wish they didn't cost arm+leg+first born or I would so have a set.

Not usually an RX fan but that thing is tidy as.
I reckon with all that oldschool cal look gear like the steering wheel, sprintstars, narrow beam, venetians etc the bug would look awesome with a timber slat roof rack 馃憤

Yogie 路

Great looking bug and a nice platform to start with. RX7 looks great also. I had a series 2 as well and put a 13b in it and it was one very fun car.

Good luck with them both.

Yogie.

Ahh!! stop it Joel!..Thats next on the list..ha ha!..I like the flat4 style racks..the vintage speed ones look sleek but sit ON the roof in some parts plus the slats are more like dowells..Flat4 rack wins in my opinion.

snitz 路

Ollie wrote:Bridge or extend port for the brap brap?

Or Jport?! Hehe
13BT will be extend ported, stud kit all machining done by Rohan Ambrose from Extreme Rotaries in Melbourne..Hes an Improved Production racer and rotary guru.It will be an animal with 280rwkw and 1050kgs to haul around and power to the ground will be through 215/45/17s..I think it may need ET streets for the rear.馃槀

snitz 路

My old mazda that got me addicted to rotaries..A 1977 RX5 with 13B Turbo and Haltech F7 injection..built about 15 years ago..Theres alot of rotor owners on Ausrotary that love or own VWs too..This forum over here is a bit more civilised though.

snitz 路

Well some new parts were delivered today. They had been doing some travelling too!..from California,to Vancouver,to Memphis Tennesee,to Honolulu then Sydney and Adelaide..phew!!..these carbs have done more travelling than me!. There a EMPI Deluxe 40MM HPMX dual carby kit for my soon to be built 1916 motor..The deluxe kit gets billet air-cleaners alot nicer IMO..

SebastienPeek 路

Ah, very nice indeed!

When you booked in to get the engine? 馃槈

When you're finished, is she still going to be your wife's, or will she be yours? :P

snitz 路

Not booked in yet as I'm waiting on a mate to respray a bonnet that I bought for it.
Once I get the boonet back i'll bolt it on and drive the car up on a permit..As for it being her car?..yeah its hers..I have my mazda to build and I have my legnum with 200kws at all four wheels as my daily!..lol.
So its definately gonna stay her car..She'll love the motor and the car when finished. She has a bit of a lead foot too!..My daily is below..

SebastienPeek 路

How much is your mate respraying for?
I'm currently looking for someone who'd do some guards at "mates rates" if possible for me...

Ahaha nice Legnum! I can see you're into your japanese cars 馃槈
But yeah, I could understand your wife being a lead foot in a beetle, I tend to drive mine too hard sometimes, but it is a heap of fun!

snitz 路

Dunno how much hes gonna charge me...Im doing some deal with him as he wants some car parts that I have..His turn around will be quite long at the moment cause his partner has had back surgery and he has to help her out. He lives at Blewitt Springs (or the top of willunga hill). If you get stuck for a paint job I'll let him know but he wont be reliable at the moment due to his partners health.

SebastienPeek 路

Ah, fair enough!

I'll see if I can get a couple of the boys around and do it here, but with the current weather it is somewhat hard to even consider doing the job without the proper facilities and just in my back yard.

snitz 路

Being white..just have a go yourself in acrylic..Spray heaps of coats and allow to harden..when you block it back it will come up killer!.Maybe lay down a coat or two of white primer as white covers better over a white primer than grey.

1958kafer 路

Hi, I didnt know DeBiasi had moved. Do you have his new address or phone number? Thanks

snitz 路

Well more gear has been ordered for the wifes mobile and is getting closer to being taken away for a new donk..gear purchased included a 1.5 Quart CB Performance sump, Scat Red Anodised Surpentine belt setup,009 dizzy and Accufire Direct Ignition Sysytem for the 009..which will be cool..having no rotor, points or cap. Also coming is a number plate surround from the states ECONO motors..It has Riverside Centre on the top and Econo motors on the bottom..I just had to buy it!馃槀馃槀..all thats left to buy is the tin ware and an inch and 5-8ths merged headers and phat boy muffler..I should have also bought a VW instead of the mazda..they definately have uber cool parts available and very addictive!..Im glad I made her keep her first car she loves it and will never part with it..Cant wait to finish it all (well a project never finishes!) and see her cruising it in summer.馃槑

snitz 路

Well..discovered a nasty suprise yesterday...After stripping out the firewall insulation to polish the firewall paintwork, I discovered that the firewall under the rear window is rusted out including the luggage area!.. Luckily the replacement panel is available and on order from George at Classic Veedubs and should arrive in 2 weeks..

So in the mean time I am taking the motor out and looking to remove the luggage area/firewall panel ready for the car to be sent off to a crash shop for them to plug weld in a new one..while there Im going to get them to paint the engine bay in Antarctica White 2 pak, ready for the rebuilt motor. So looks like the motor is coming out real soon and will be sent off seperate without the car. Hopefully the repairs to the car will be done quickly and then the car can be trailered up to Peter Debiasi so he can refit the motor and get it running..Busy times ahead!!

snitz 路

Well next week I have a guy thats coming to look at the vw and to do the rust repair..so hopefully it can be done while the motor is being built..馃憤

snitz 路

Well heres a small update..recieved my 009 dizzy, Compufire ignition and Scat Serpentine Pulley kit today. Now its off to the shed to start to pull this motor out!...Yay!馃槀

SebastienPeek 路

Hey!

Quick question, what do the pulley kits achieve? I see that extra little pulley, where does that mount?
Is it mainly for looks?

snitz 路

The extra tensioner pulley mounts off the two front bolts of the generator stand I think. The ribbed serpentine belt is supposed to be quieter, last longer and is suitable for higher revving engines. The kit was cheaper from the states landed than buying one here so I thought..why not! Easier to set the belt tension too..You cant go wrong with billet and anodised parts anyway!..lol

SebastienPeek 路

Aha fair enough, that engine is going to look very nice indeed!

Where are you getting all your parts from anyway?

snitz 路

Alot of the gear I have been buying from...Wassim @ www.vollks.com.au, George @ Classic Veedub, CIP1 in the states(california) parts delivered in 4 days from america very quick postage. CB Performance in the States.

snitz 路

Most of the ancilleries removed from the motor..I'll drop the motor out in the next day or so ready to go off for some massaging.

Rear window removed and rear seat and inner trim removed as I get the car ready to go to the crash shop for a luggage panel removal and repair while the motor is off getting built..馃槑

snitz 路

Finally pulled my finger out of my proverbial and removed the motor from the wifes Dub. Now I've gotta sort through the bits and pieces and clean the generator and stand back up and I am reusing them as the genny is a brand new Bosch and not worth throwing away to go a taiwanese alternator..and If I really get bored i've got the Malleys esky to restore aswell!..馃お

snitz 路

Finally recieved my bits and pieces from CB Performance today..so not far now from sending the motor off to get built..as I write this another courier has just arrived with all my tinware and other bit from Vollks..so Ill post that gear later..馃お

snitz 路

Recieved all my new tin work today..36HP Doghouse shroud and twin port tins. These will be sent off tommorrow to get garnet blasted and powdercoated in a graphite grey ripple finish.

Due to the quality of thin steel used for the generator tin work on the aftermarket gear..I have opted to use the original tinware for the generator as its alot thicker pressed steel.

SebastienPeek 路

Looking nice, can't wait to see this all come together for you!

snitz 路

Also the panel beater came tonight to see what needs to be done to repair the rusted out luggage compartment floor and firewall..so looks like things are fulls steam ahead..car will go off for rust repairs soon and most of the engine bits are together ready to go to Peter Debiaisi..馃槑 sweet!

snitz 路

Thanks seb!..how did you go with the fitment of your alternator in the end?..are you happy with the alternator?..did you upgrade the power wires to the alternator or anything?

SebastienPeek 路

Yeah, the alternator was actually quite interesting. It's a 75amp one, but seems to have some of it's internals knocking... Or my pulley is knocking on something. Will have to get Siggy at GHR to take a look when I put her in for a service.
Other than that, everything is in and fine, loving life without the battery dying when idling and listening to music!

I haven't upgraded the wires yet actually, at the moment they're the same except for where I bypassed the external regulator under the rear seat.
Was quite easy to do, just needed to use a little creativity and so forth.

snitz 路

UPDATE..picked up my Phat Boy system today with 1" & 5/8ths merged headers or 42mm outside OD pipes for us metric generation. Also picked up my re-garnet-blasted and re-powdercoated empi tinware today..the finish was ten times better than the original finish and was worth the extra coin. They are Gloss Black. The pics dont do them justice!.
Also paid for the luggage repair panel for the beetle too so just tying up a few loose ends and the car will go off for the luggage panel rust repair and 2 pack engine bay respray in Antarctica White and the engine will head off to the Debiasis' for some loving..getting REAAALLY close now馃槑.

SebastienPeek 路

Well, well, well!
Looks like you've got yourself a few presents! The beetle is going to sound mean with that phat boy system, and then with the upgraded grunt in the engine, damn she's going to move!

snitz 路

Yeah it will be good to drive it again. The wife has only driven it around the block once in the last 8 years..due to it being in storage.

snitz 路

Small update today..recieved the decklid spring and hood emblem clips that the bonnet emblem pins sit into..bought the clips off ebay and waited for EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..like 6 weeks from the states..pfft..wont use that seller again!

snitz 路

Right-e-o recieved the firewall/luggage panel repair area today to replace the rusted version in the car. Now im just waiting on the go ahead to drop the car off to the crash shop. Engine should go off in a week or so..just need to buy an alternator and stand then all the goodies and the core engine can go off to peter..woohoo!..I'll have space in the shed for once!

snitz 路

Bought a couple of gauges for the wifes Dub..Autometer American Muscle gauges electric short sweep. Oil pressure and volts. Oil temp for some reason is harder to find and not available in most series of gauges.
I was looking at the Odometer aswell but the wife wants to keep the factory odometer.
I want to mount them using something similar to the AIRKEWLD under steering column gauge holder at the moment they are not available for later model bugs..

snitz 路

Today I recieved the correct hubcap puller for my jack points..billet ones instead of the $5 plastic and pressed steel shit they first sent me (ISP Parts in USA are shit by the way..).

Also my parts from AIRKEWLD arrived today!..A billet fuel pump block off and a billet dizzy clamp with degree markings, both anodised red to match the Scat Serpentine pulley kit...

The only things Im really waiting on to arrive are my chrome 85 amp alternator and stand, fuel tank spiggot and outlet from the tank and gaskets and engine seals around tin work and over the bellhousing. The motors pretty much ready to go off for a rebuild i reckon馃槑.

1958kafer 路

Hey mate, looking forward to seeing the pics after the crash shop. I,m also in Adelaide. Who are you getting to do the body work?

snitz 路

Southern Crash and Custom at Seaford are doing the work..Its just the owner Adam and his apprentice.Hes not a big crash shop but he gives a shit and is a great guy. He does more custom work and restos rather than insurance work. He just restored a mates Datto 1200 wagon and I was impressed with his work..
The crash shop is removing the rear floor and firewall, replacing with a panel I supplied, etch priming all work, painting and repairing the luggage panel both inside and under the car, and smoothing out the engine bay and respraying all in 2 pak.

SebastienPeek 路

Starting to get very close!

Good work on picking up those parts, shouldn't be too long until you can get her back on the road!
Keep at it.
馃榾

snitz 路

It will still be a while until its on the road.
Once its back running I need to remove the front window and do a small rust repair, then replace the hood lining with all the windows out.
Once the hoodlining is done I need to re-fit all the windows with new seals and replace the front window..then she can be driven. After all this is done i still need to retrim the scat seats and rear seat to match and a new carpet kit..then I will be happy...for now..lol...where do you stop?????馃槀

SebastienPeek 路

That's the problem, once the bug has bitten, you don't stop! :P

Sounds like a damn good plan though, hopefully will be ready for Day of The VW though, same with Zelda!

snitz 路

I should hope so!!..

1958kafer 路

Hey Snitz, I will be looking for for someone to paint my Beetle soon. Has he had much experience with VW,s and what are his rates like?
Thanks Steve

snitz 路

Im unsure whether he has painted beetles before. Do you live south?..If you do he used to work for Hower Crash @ Lonsdale before he started his own business at Seaford. Southern Crash and Custom .(08) 7185 0710 (Adam).I dont see him as using me as a guinea pig. Any competent painter could paint your beetle. His rust repair and panel repair is second to none.Heres some pics of my mates Datto that he did a bare metal resto on..around 10k..bear in mind this had a custom trans tunnel, engine bay mods and rust repairs aswell.

SebastienPeek 路

Damn that is one hot Datsun!

Can't wait to see how your wife's bug comes out! 馃榾

snitz 路

Hes only doing the luggage panel rust repair and painting the engine bay..not the whole car..most of her car is still smick anyway..馃槑

SebastienPeek 路

Ah, lucky, Zelda's paint isn't, well, the best of things.

Keep us posted on the happenings! 馃榾

snitz 路

Today I recieved the last parts for the wifes VDub...being an 85 Amp Alternator and stand..

Also the fuel tank hardware for when the tank comes back from the powdercoaters..just a few seals, spiggot (fuel outlet and nut) and in-tank filter.

Also the 2 Autometer gauges came they are both electric short sweep, American Muscle gauges..

And last but not least some button socket head staainless screws and washers to mount all the tinwork!..

So thats about it!..time to get the motor and all this gear sent off!!..Cheers Jason.

snitz 路

Pulled the fuel tank out of the beetle today, starting to get the hood area cleaned up ready for the new powdercoated tank.

i will most probably have a few weeks until the car goes off for the luggage rust repair so it gives me some time to clean up the wiring, sand down the front hood area, seam seal and blow some colour (Antarctica White) in there.

While messing around in the shed I mocked up a few of the fog lights and spot lights on the front bumper to give myself some ideas!..
This spotlight is a LUCAS branded spottie..

Next is a rare SEV MARCHEL foglight made in France..

And lastly is a rectangle no names from a swapmeet..

..
Personally I like the SEV MARCHAL or LUCAS the best..I think the round lights suit the best..馃槑

snitz 路

Got the fuel tank back today..so now I need to clean out the tank of sand from the blasting then fit up the sender, spiggot and filter in the bottom and large bung in the top. In the next week or so I plan to re-route some wiring under the hood and seam seal all the panel joins and then respray under the hood before I put the tank back in..馃槉

snitz 路

The motor went off to Peter Deb. this week so loaded up the legnum and dropped it all off to Peter!..

This week I have been getting stuck into prepping the hood area which is now in 2k hi-fill..next is to block it back and spray some Antarctica White in there..then I have to clean up some wiring before it goes off to the crash shop for rust repairs mid-next week..soo better get my skates on!.

snitz 路

Today I finally put a lick of paint under the hood and it turn out pretty good for pressure packs!馃槑. My local paint supplies store sells 2pak primer and mixed colours in cans which makes it easy for me as I dont have a compressor etc at home.

Tommorrow the car goes off for the luggage panel rust repair so I did a bit more cleaning up removing the rear trims and front seats that I test fitted.

snitz 路

The car headed off to the crash shop today!..just a couple of pics of the car waiting to be picked up..

And a pic of it on its way...

BugsyMalone 路

Good build up there!

Look forward to seeing the end result. Any chance of a $$$$ value for all engine parts and rebuild cost. I have just bought a 69 bug. Body is great but motor and box needs major work. Wondering if your way is cheaper or if I should buy a reco engine already done.

Have you had any dramas from customs with your packages from the states? I ordered some moto parts from the states and customs took them and I had to pay nearly $100 for them to release the 4 boxes. What a nightmare that was 馃槵 Nearly blew my moto trip. Was not happy!!! So don't really want that to happen again.....

Look forward to more posts.

Cheers

Paul

snitz 路

Hi mate..I healthy 1916cc short motor will probably set you back about $5000. Then the expense of your ancilleries such as Empi HPMXs or Dellortos, exhaust etc. Rod Penrose sells motors on this forum but I cant remember his Forum Username..He has engines that he sells pre-built and can help you with what carbs etcs you would need to run his engines or can probably build a motor to your requirements. Most of the parts for the build I bought from CIP1 in the states. Never had a problem with customs on parts from CIP1 just keep your orders under $1000 and buy when the aussie dollar is good. I also use George @ Classic Veedub. He stocks all the quality products such as Flat4 and stocks economy parts and everything in between. Cheers Jason.

snitz 路

Small update..the car is off at the crash shop and in the process of getting the luggage area replaced. At the same time he suggested to do a little bit of rust removal around the left rear fender, panel beat and respray the rear apron and respray under the engine hood aswell for minimal $..since he's working on the area anyway.

On the engine side of things..the 1500 single port was pulled down and after a close inspection and crack testing..the only salvageable parts for the 1916 twin port rebuild are the crank and fly wheel!..lol馃槀馃槀..Still the case did well for 41 years with the last 3-4 of those years with stud problems and in need of a rebuild..anyway all will be new and cant wait to see it all come together..will post pics of progress as it comes about..cheers Jason.

snitz 路

Finally heres some pics of the car at Southern Crash and Custom ...awesome guys that do great work and have the attitude and enthusiasm of car enthusiasts..highly reccommend them if you live down south of Adelaide..

matberry 路

馃憤 Excellent work

snitz 路

Yep definately excellent work. When I had my rx7 painted else where they took over a year to paint it..This crash repairer has done all this work in less than a week..they are machines!..馃お馃お
Seam sealing and prepping for paint was being done after I left..should be home for a quick clean up of wiring next week and then ready for the Peter Debiasi to take the car to fit the new donk!.
The Volksie has definatley been an enjoyable part-rebuild..everything has gone smoothly so far..dare I say?.lol

snitz 路

1 week later and SHAZZAM!! the car is home from the repairs to the rear beaver panel, firewall and luggage area aswell as an engine bay respray..now fitting up seals in the engine bay and looking to clean up the wiring before it goes off to get the motor fitted..cheers jason馃槑

snitz 路

Front hood seal and engine to body work seals are now in..so next to do is clean up the wiring..A mate of mine is reworking the replacement '70 bonnet but not having much luck flipping the dents out due to the compund curves of the bonnet..so may have to send the original bonnet off the car the to the crash shop and get that repaired..never thought I would have so much problems with a bonnet!..lol馃檯馃檯

thebullfrog 路

I have a 70 beetle as well, i have a question in regards to the pictures posted on October 24th, 2011 at 08:06 PM. in particular the one 4 from begin, 2 from the end. Its in regardt o the holes that cave in? what are they? i had metal plates welded over mine....

snitz 路

Im unsure what you mean?..are you meaning the holes iin the firewall?..if you are yours are probably filled because the 1970 doesnt have these holes..This replacement panel fits super beetle aswell I think and the panel is a brazilian panel..the holes are not used on a '70 beetle. Im using the holes to relocate the coil pack for the direct fire ignition to inside the cabin and use the hole to route the ignition wires tot he motor..does this answer you question?.sorry Im not sure what you mean..cheers

thebullfrog 路

On that 4th picture, the luggage area, the 2 holes on the left and right. I am just curious to what they are. =) Not the holes in the firewall itself.

Im a confusing person haha.

snitz 路

Yeah..the two holes on the luggage floor area..i have no idea what they are for.My old floor was that rusted that I dont know if it had them on the original luggage floor panel..lol

SebastienPeek 路

I think they could be mounting points for children harnesses...

Like, those seat things that the babies can sit in, I think that is what they are for, the mounting point for them.
Not 100% sure though.

I know MUm had to have custom ones drilled into her Type 3 at some stage for me 馃槈

snitz 路

Hmm could be..馃樀

Joel 路

Nah, they were the mountings for the body cradles during production.

They should have metal plugs in them with seam sealer over the top.

snitz 路

Ahh..thanks Joel..I might have to put a couple of grommets in there then. Dont think the wife 1970 luggage floor had them?..I could be wrong..like I said hers was pretty swiss cheese..lol

Joel 路

There they be laughing at you 馃槈

snitz 路

Well aren't I a f@&king retard and im the one with good eye sight..馃槀馃槀馃お馃お Too busy looking at the rustfest to notice!.

thebullfrog 路

Thats very interesting then, i wire wheel all the rust out of my luggage area and took those tabs out (still have them in sorted bags though). Should i put them back in Joel? or does it not matter? it will be covered with Dynamat...if that matters at all.

Joel 路

I'd put them back in, its to keep moisture out.
You don;t want moisture trapped there otherwise it ends up like snitzs car did.

thebullfrog 路

Whats the most appropraite way to seal them back it, my tabs are all clean and that, will a bead of silicon and then KBS over the top do the job? Or is there a method to the madness?

snitz 路

Not much progress at the moment just re-wiring the engine bay and under the dash. Currently Im cleaning every wire behind the dash with thinners to remove overspray and then re-route the wiring for a neater look under the hood. Too boring for photos trust me!馃槀. If I grab the camera for pics during the re-wire I might just forget which wire is which 馃槀.

On another note I have been told by the engine builder that the engine should be finished in the next week or so. So i need to finish the wiring sometime this week before the car goes off to recieve the new motor..cheers Snitz..

snitz 路

Well the front hood area has finally been sorted out and the wiring has been cleaned up. Powdercoated inspection plates put back on and compliance/adr plate pop-riveted back on. Headlight looms were re-done, the looms now run with the main power loom for a neater look. Only thing really left is to finish off the fuel filler and earth the fuel sender properly.

Once finished then i need to attack the engine compartment and re-route the taillight looms and then its just waiting for the engine..yay!!!馃榿

The fuel tank................mmmmmmmmmmmm....why did it have to be covered, Your wiring looks new, where did you purchase it from?

That engine bay looks very very very nice

Thanks thebullfrog..for the comments..the fitted carpet is only sitting on the tank and will be used to protect the paintwork and powdercoat on the tank while carrying gear in the front. The wiring for the headlight looms was redone from scratch using factory wire colours..then covered in either heat-shrink or conduit..regards jason

thebullfrog 路

Good idea, that tank needs to be shown off! =) That wiring would have been fun then....is that all the engine wiring included. I went the option to get a 1970 LHD kit from Cip1 and i shall madify the lengths of what needs to be changed (hopefully not too much). I shall definately be using plenty of heatshrink!

snitz 路

I haven't done the engine bay wiring yet..will be trying to do that this weekend or early next week. The bonnet I had bare metalled and restored has been painted and ready for pick up so I will be fitting the new bonnet and Empi gas struts tommorrow aswell..馃お

thebullfrog 路

EMPI -_- haha, I don't know what i will replace my hood struts with. Something better/different though. I have so many parts collected now, i really really need the body off the pan so i can get the body soda blasted and move forwards with everything.

snitz 路

No more pics to put up yet..Motor was together by engine builder but it has been pulled down and re-machined as the overall static compression was too low to work with the camshaft and heads.I spoke to the builder and the case etc has been washed again after the machine work and will be back together and running by this weekend.
The bonnet that I had painted turned out a cream colour instead of Antarctica White...the spray painter is repainting it for free of course!.(It was only colour-matched off the fuel filler cap).Due to previous repairs etc some parts of the car have been resprayed in 2pak with varying colours between the repairs, so the painter needs to get the Spies Hecker Rep to come in and use their machine to get a computer matched colour to the rest of the car so the colour matches better than it does..馃お

SebastienPeek 路

Ah, I'm excited to see this finished, u[load more pictures when you have them!

Bit balls though, pity it wasn't done right the first time.

snitz 路

Hope you've been enjoying your holiday Seb...Nothing goes smoothly when it comes to cars..Heres some pics of the bonnet. Ideally he should have asked for the car to do a proper match than rely on the fuel filler cap alone..as you can see it has more black in the colour. Even when I mocked up the emblem and the chrome strip to try and break the colour up, it still stands out like dog balls...

SebastienPeek 路

Yeah, been enjoying the holiday quite a bit, but looking forward to getting home and getting stuck back into Zelda!

You're right, it does stick out like a mofo. Looks like the difference between my rear fenders and my body. Damn body is cream where the rear fenders are white as white can be...
Might cut and polish Zelda and see if it is less noticeable.

Seems most beetle's, besides ones that have been completely resprayed, all have mismatched colour parts.
Might get a couple of mates around and spray Zelda myself. Then at least she'll be the right colour on the outside, and cream on the inside 馃檪

But damn she is looking good man, can't wait to see this engine in!

snitz 路

UPDATE..Well the front hood area is all finished now with earth wire for the fuel sender..the tank isn't bolted in properly nor the fuel filler in because the tank will come out for the new electric pump while the cars getting the motor put in..

Engine builder is ready for the car but now the paint shop is ready to spectro the paint on the front guards to get an exact match to repaint the bonnet..So Im in a mad rush to re-wire the tail-lights and engine compartment before is goes off to the painters tommorrow.heres the progress..

So everything going to plan the car should be up at Peter Debiasis by the end of the week...YAY!!

SebastienPeek 路

Damn that is a really clean looking engine bay.

You might see Zelda at Peter's then (if you're going up with the car that is), or is he coming to pick it up himself?
Can't wait to see what happens when everything is back home and the engine is in.

Get excited!

snitz 路

I trailer the car to St. Peters where a friend of Peters lives and he tows it on his Ford flat bed from there. Given that he works from home I dont think he wants everyone to frequent his house all the time..did you trailer your car up there or did he pick it up?.

SebastienPeek 路

That is definitely true...

Yeah, he came and picked her up from her grave out the front of my place.
Should be hearing from him soon.

snitz 路

Car back from the painters..Bonnet has been fitted up, New trim and Emblem clips and Hood handle seal fitted. The original german chrome trim had pin dents so I had to tap the dents out/file finish and hand polish. Im half way through the engine bay wiring so hopefully Monday or Tuesday it goes off for the 1916 thats waiting for it..

t_tuffnut 路

It is looking fantastic. Great work on the thread too. Its a good read.

snitz 路

Thanks.nothing will be better than seeing my wife drive it again for the first time.Being her first car and only driving it once in the last..well now 8 years and seeing it the way she has always wanted it. My projects can wait. Sometimes its more rewarding seeing other people happy first..馃槑

I wanted to document the build/ freshen up a fair bit as I didnt do this with previous cars that I owned and I now regret not doing that. Theres alot more to do to it but atleast when its driving the interior can be done whilst the car is on the road and not have to be trailered everywhere. Its been a satisfying buiild so far with parts available at good prices and great forum members who have helped me out along the way..

snitz 路

All tail-light wiring and rear licence plate wiring now finished/ hidden and running into the cabin now. The earth wires for each tail-light and rear licence plate all terminate inside the car and are earthed inside the cabin..

Licence plate wiring is routed back in the car using Cabac fibreglass sheathing, also using heatshrink and water-proof connectors..

All wiring now runs under the seat such as the engine bay loom, tail light loom and licence plate loom.

The left over loom is for the coil,genny/alternator wiring and the main power wiring tot he alternator. These have been left for Peter Debiasi to get the car running. Once the car comes home and is running I will modify and hide the loom..A bit hard to do with no motor.馃槑

So thats it!..its all ready for the motor now. Which I will organise in the next day or so to get it up to Peter..Cheers Jason.

snitz 路

Well finally car goes off for the motor today (Monday)..I had some time to fit up the GTV wheel..Nice..馃槑

Cant wait to show the next pics with the motor fitted..Cheers Jason.

snitz 路

Wifes car is running and all ready to be picked up!!..cant wait to drive the car with its healthy 1916cc motor..Rather than the clapped out 1500 single port.馃槑Well I have to wait until this Thursday..

snitz 路

Well the beastie is home and running..The wife is stoked with the way it turned out and so am I..Only thing left engine wise is to neaten up alternator wiring and get some Topgun custom leads made to length for the Compufire set-up..and in RED as the Compufire kits dont have the option of red leads. Sounds tough with the cam, straight cut gears and Empi carbs...Very happy..Cheers Jason.

SebastienPeek 路

Looks very nice Jason!

How does it feel when you put your foot down? 馃槈
Also, just quickly, is that a SCAT serpentine belt pulley system?

Once again, looks awesome!

Nice!

What is the carb power delivery like?

Thanks Seb..Only drove it from the road into the shed as the car has no rego..was tempted to run the gauntlet but contained myself..The pedal feels so crisp and the engine so revvy..Peter Debiasi fryed the tyres putting it on my trailer..lol. Shes definately a little demon..i think the Compufire system makes it responsive, smooth and revvy..have to wait till shes done about 500miles before I sink the foot in too much.
And yes the serpentine set up is a Scat one..All in all happy with the set-up.

snitz 路

Bizarre wrote:Nice!

Thanks Bizarre..Dont know what the power delivery is like as I only drove it from the road to the shed..lol.The motor revs quick and freaked the wife a bit when she drove it off the trailer..Its very responsive and revs smooth..I know the motor had to be re-machined for a higher compression for the cam and heads set-up, as everything was new including case.I think the compression ratio and compufire system compliment the whole set-up and make it very responsive..I need to fix the rust around the front window and do Hoodlining and windows before we can hit the road..so it will be a little while till we can put some kilometres on it..cheers Jason.

snitz 路

Just a small update..The alternator loom has now been covered with a black heatproof sheath and cleaned up a bit where it terminates on the alternator, including the rubber boot for the Positive power feed. Also found a grommet for where the loom passes through the firewall.

Also i have redone the breather hose in stealth braided Aeroflow hose and fittings..Next is to replace the generic shit leads with custom MSD 8.5mm leads in red with wire seperators..then the engine bay will be as I wanted it..馃槑

SebastienPeek 路

Looks great Jason!

Will we be seeing the bug at DOVW this Sunday? 馃檪

snitz 路

Unfortunately the car wont be at the Day of the Volkswagen or on the road anytime soon.馃檨 . We still need to respray the roof after removing the CB aerial hole on the roof and a little bit of rust around the front window.
Once thats done then the car gets a new hoodliner, front window and the side and rear windows go in with new seals with chrome trim.
Then I need to KBS Rust Bullet the floor and retrim the interior.
Once thats done the front beam will be fitted with the CB Performance spindles and have a 2" chop..then fit the Sprintstar wheels with 155 fronts and 205 rears..

THEN...the car will hit the road..Good things come to those who wait they say.The wife doesn't want to drive a half finished car she said!..馃槉

SebastienPeek 路

Ahaha that's fair enough!
I think I've been driving a 18th of a finished car for a while now... 馃槈

Sounds good though, you still coming out for the DOVW or not going to bother?

snitz 路

Yep..I'll be there for a look.馃槑

snitz 路

No crazy updates just yet. Today I bought all I need to make custom 8.5mm super conductor MSD leads for the Accufire setup. These MSD leads are available through CIP1 for standard dizzy placement but thanks to the direct fire setup I have the standard lead set just doesn't work for me anymore. Just have to wait till Monday for the lead crimpers as Outlaw Speed Shop ran out..

snitz 路

Only recieved the MSD crimping tool for the leads today so looks like tommorrows job will be making up the custom leads.
While at the shop we bought this mini Ultralite tacho 3"3/8..Just the right side to run under the dash, below the ashtray and keep an eye on revs without having to resort to a 5" sized tacho..It came with a shift light too just like a full-sized monster tacho.馃槑

snitz 路

MSD leads are all made and on the car..although I have a few scratches trying to put the leads on the plugs thanks to my big hands and forearms..馃槀

snitz 路

Nothing much happening at the moment with the wifes Veedub..Waiting till the 23rd of April to take it to the crash shop again to get the Roof, A pillars and the front cowl area resprayed..but in the mean-time i am organising some rear suspension through Richard Holzl at VForce. Including 26mm rear bars, Bilstein Shocks and a stud kits for the wheels with 60 degree taper nuts just to make changing wheels that much easier.馃憤
It will be nice to have a well sorted ass end with matching performance shocks instead of dragging the phatboy muffler everywhere..馃槀. Then next on the list is to get the front beam chopped 2" weld in a set of adjusters, fit the CB spindles and then finally fit up the Sprintstar wheels. "No driving and running in the motor until we have STANCE"..those are the wifes orders..馃槀

SebastienPeek 路

Stance is where it is at! 馃檪

snitz 路

Today I recieved the Hoodlining, TMI Sunvisors and clips and a Clear Shift Pattern sticker to go on the soon to be repainted ashtray..Honestly forgot about these parts being ordered..馃槀.

Atleast now when the CB aerial hole in the middle of the roof is welded up and the roof repainted, we can then fit up the new hoodlining, visors and then start to fit back all the windows with new seals..then we are ready to hit road to run the motor in.

On another note the rear suspension was order today from Richard at VForce..So 26mm bars, Monotube Bilsteins and bushes are on their way!..No more excessive squatting with a saggy bum!.馃憤

snitz 路

Okay..finally I finished the ash-tray repraying it in 2pak and applied the shift pattern sticker from Vintage Veedub..Came up a treat..馃憤
Also cut out the dash for the CD Player..

snitz 路

Today my bits from Richard @ VeeForce arrived..Consisting of short 26mm Torsion Bars, Bilstein Monotubes, Bushes aswell as the nuts and studs for the stud conversion..In the future plans are to fit my drop-spindles and weld in adjusters and run the same bilstein monotubes in the front..

Lachlan VL 路

very nice just like opening a christmas present

snitz 路

Ive also been buying some hard to get parts to make the wifes car that bit more special..Thanks to a member I was linked to a The Samba member who was selling OG Formula Vee hood scoops...Heres my score...馃槑

And pictures of the 'Vee Hood Scoop test fitted..

Plans are to paint the scoop in body colour and polish the stainless trim edge...
Also on the way from the UK is a Bambus Parcel tray and new reproduction red Bambus plate for the front of the tray..

snitz 路

Thanks to a previous owner the car was left with a CB Aerial plug in the roof..Plans are after this wednesday the car is going back to the crash shop to delete the roof aerial plug, A Pillar aerial hole and fix the rust around the front windsreen then paint the A pillars and roof..
RUST vvvvvvvvvvvv

THE OFFENDING ROOF AERIAL PLUG vvvvvv

Once the roof is painted it will finally be time to put in the new roof-lining and put all the windows in with new seals and then its DRIVE TIME!!!..YEWWWWWWWW!!

tar76 路

Mate the engine bay looks awesome, nice job 馃憤

snitz 路

Thanks tar76..Looking back at the start of the thread the plan was to replace the motor and clean up the firewall "a bit"..lol but thanks to all the rust it snowballed out of control. It turned out better than expected to be honest..plus nothing will be better than someone coming up at a car show when we show it and say.."nice car mate"..to which my reply will be "its not my car, its the wifes"..馃憤. I dont mind having my project waiting in the shed while I work on her VW and to be honest I have thought of selling the Mazda at times and building a German-look bug..lol

snitz 路

Lachlan VL wrote:very nice just like opening a christmas present
The wifes has to thank her late father for all the presents..
Her father bought it for her as her first car. She has a special attachment to it and has made many memories with this car..it was only fitting that we "cleaned it up" in part-memory of her dad..馃槑

TorxKiwi 路

I've just read the thread start to finish, great job and an amazing result, work remaining to do or not. Great photos too, but ....... I REALLY want to hear it. How about a video, just fire the beast up, let it quietly idle, if that's even possible, and then give it a few revs. I feel like some sort of deviate asking, but how about it.I know I'm not alone. My wife doesn't believe me anyway when I tell her "I'm on the forum" so let's have it ........ VW porn!!!

Again great story to follow and look forward to seeing the end, if there ever is, result.

snitz 路

Yeah I'll have to sus out how to post up videos..I took a small video on my phone but the speaker on my phone hated it..lol

snitz 路

Well the wifes beetle is off at the crash shop now to have the roof, A pillars and cowl panel resprayed and at the same time remove a little rust around the front window..will post some piccies of the work when I head down there next..once the paint is done its headliner and new window seals time..

snitz 路

Still waiting for updates from the Crash Shop but our Ra Bambus shelf arrived today..Just in the process of cleaning it up before I fit the Maroon and silver tag back on the front..馃槑

snitz 路

Heres just a quick pic of the rust repairs around the front window, with the aerial hole on the roof to be done next. The top of the dash will be resprayed aswell so I purchased new dash vents from VVD, wiper shaft seals and windscreen washer jet..

snitz 路

Heres a few more updates of the rust removal from the front window, cleaning the drip gutter out, removing the CB aerial on the roof and the roof resprayed..

snitz 路

Well good news is the car is finally registered again after over 7 years and the wife and I have started to put some kays on the motor.Unfortunately the rear brakes are in need of an overhaul thanks to 7 years of sitting. The rear drums are dragging and the further we drive..the worse its gets.So tommorrow the cars going to GHRs for some rear brake loving.Super impressed with the 1916cc combo..Its a grunty little combo thats suprised even me ..super responsive and low down torque.

cam070 路

Great to hear another bug is alive, breathing and terrorizing the roads. And nice job too!

snitz 路

Cheers Cam70..good luck with your German-look project. Its definately a different car to drive. With the Berg shifter you just want to smash gears and drive like a man possessed..馃槀

blistered_bug 路

great work on the resto mate

snitz 路

Thanks..Its sort of an ongoing resto. Still have to narrow the front beam, buy tyres for the Sprintstar wheels, put in the new rear suspension, finish the interior..Its never ending but getting closer.馃槑

cam070 路

I bet you have a happy wife!

snitz 路

Yep..definately have a happy wife..but she wont drive the car at the moment and she's a little intimidated by the berg shifter and quick revving motor..what a blouse..lol. Give it time and she'll drive it..she just hates change.lol.

snitz 路

The Wife and I took the Dub out today for a decent drive to put the kays on the new motor..We drove down to Goolwa and had a look at my late father-in-laws house and had lunch. Last time the VW was down at Goolwa I was putting it on a car trailer to bring to our house after being in storage for over 7 years!. At least now its moves under its own power..lol.
The car ran faultlessly and the engine just wants to go and go. With all the revs at 100km/hr it makes us think that later on we might go a 5 speed box.
Anyways heres a few pictures of the beetle down at Goolwa, which is actually where the World Volkswagen Day Cruise finishes up.The wife drove the beetle most of the way home and loved the motor and the way it drives..Cheers Jason.

snitz 路

Well no new changes to the beetle at the moment..I have all the suspension to put in the rear and work to do on it but unfortunately I have been way too busy doing house mods..lol.

BEFORE...

AND AFTER!!!............

Now we have under-cover parking for our 6 cars..lol.馃槀

cam070 路

Dude, I am so jealous. We have 3 cars and only a single garage, and my bug currently takes up twice as much space with thee body still off the pan. I could have all my stuff under cover with all that space and maybe even have a party!

snitz 路

Ha ha!..When we first bought the house it only had a single carport and no shed at all.My Mazda Rx7 project lived in my mates rumpus room for a year until we had the rear shed built and could bring it home. So i definately know how you feel!.Luckily my cousin is a builder and I have been his bitch for the last 5 weeks building this extension. Saved a shitload of money, learnt alot and now have a massive area to park up the cars or use an entertaining area.We are extemely grateful to have what we have especially after having no shed at all.馃槑

turboty 路

only have 1 question....

Why after doing all this work getting the beetle to where it is do you still have the rego plate that looks like it was pulled out of the torrens river??

fork out the $40 for nice plates... please

snitz 路

Well you're only allowed one question since you can't compliment on all the hard work done here in this thread.Pity you asked a question that I couldn't give two fucks about...It has new plates and has for a while.Move on bud and post something of substance. My wife whinged for new plates and she got them..whats your reason?..got sand in your vagina?.

snitz 路

Only a small update since my last post. I finally tracked down some NOS hella taillights from VVD..Thanks for the members who pointed me in the right direction.. Heres a couple of pics of the beetle with the new taillights and of the bumper over-riders which I just trial-fitted to make sure they fit properly..馃槑

And for all the retro Esky lovers heres a few pics of my eskys that I plan to restore and pinstripe..You can never have enough eskys. They are all either Staykold or Malleys.

pete wood 路

That is one sick obsession. 馃槀

snitz 路

If I buy any more these days I make a bee-line to the shed before the wife sees them!..ha ha!.

69bug 路

Those bumper over riders look good? Where'd you pick them up samba?

snitz 路

Hi 69 bug..The over-riders I bought off a seller on ebay but I never saved him as a seller and his transaction history is long gone.
There are sets available on The Samba as you have probably seen..but some of the over-riders have an extra cut out for an extra thick bumper strip where as our bumpers (well 69-70) only have black tape through the middle and the over-riders that I have bought have a little raised section in the middle..so be careful not to buy the wrong ones. There are sets on Samba at the moment in black but chrome pop up now and then.

snitz 路

Not much progress on the Beetle at the moment..馃ゲ'
Was bored today so I mocked up a Sprintstar wheel on the back of the beetle.Soon I plan to have the front beam narrowed and adjusters put in and fit up the wheels along with fitting up the rear Bilsteins and new rear torsion bars.
There's soo much more to do but on the flipside we are happy that the car is running..馃槑

snitz 路

Just a quick update..In the process of buying a 2" Narrowed beam with Swayaway Adjusters and a set of Empi Gasburners off a mate..So soon I will have wheels on the car and the front and rear suspension sitting the way I want It.

On another note My wife and I finally entered the car in the McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic Day here in Adelaide. The day started out at a winery Serafinos, then a nice procession down the main street lined with soo many people followed by a get together of all the VWs at a designated winery (Lazy Ballerina Winery)..Its was an awesome day and can't wait to do the Bay to Birdwood this year..Here's a few pics..cheers Jason

snitz 路

In the process of getting a few more things together.I have a 2" Narrowed front beam organised with sway-a-way style adjusters and 2" dropped spindles but need to order some shortened Bilsteins from Richard Holzl.Everything for the rear suspension such as bushes, bilsteins and torsion bars are all in the shed but dont want to bust my arse and fit them just yet..lol.
We also purchased another set of rims besides the Sprinstars. The set of GasBurngers had only been fitted up to a car and driven a couple of times and the offer was too good to pass up.At the time we bought the Sprintstars the GBs weren't available.I fitted one to the rear to get an idea but will be running a 205/65/15 on the rear and a 155-175 on the front..heres a couple of pics..

Bizarre 路

they are cool wheels
Very nice 馃憤

snitz 路

No new updates on the wifes beetle because we bought this!!..

Plans are to respray in Flipper Blue and white, Chrome waistline trim, Detailed IOZZIO 17" Fuchs, slightly lowered, running the standard 2 litre and 6 rib gearbox. Rock n' Roll bed,Fold down table and TV..Good to cruise in when the family expands!..lol.

Bizarre 路

Love tin tops!
Love Flipper Blue & White colour combination.

Hope you take it to the same standard as your wife's.

snitz 路

Thanks Bizarre..We definately plan to build this to the same standard if not better. I went to pick up the Gasburner wheels and adjustable beam off of a mate for the beetle and saw this sitting at his house. We fell in love with the colour and the fact it was a tin top as we have a low over-hang on our carport and a Pop top would not fit under it.
With production of Kombis coming to an end and not many tin tops around we had to save it...So thats car number 7! ha ha!..

First plan is to sell off our toyota cressida and put that money into the Bay..Happy Kombi owners 馃槑..Some people see alot of work..all that I could see was potential and the finished product. That's when you know you have got the bug!.

snitz 路

Well...what can I say?.. Its been ages since I last posted any progress about the VW.
Well having a child changes priorities and provides massive amounts of distraction!.
Finally with help from a friend the front beam with adjusters/spindles and 2" narrow, was finally put in the beetle.
Along with fitting up the Gasburners with new studs/alloy nuts and Billet Porsche Crest centre caps.
It's finally starting to look the way we want it.
Here's some recent pics of the car from this years Bay to Birdwood run.
Car ran well and is finally run in now. It easily pulled 90mph on the was home with more in it, plus it's still running rich too!.
If only it had a 5 speed..lol.

snitz 路

Another of the finish..

snitz 路

At the start..

snitz 路

Start.. The rear still needs the new torsion bars and shocks in yet.Aswell as a little raise and 205/65/15s on the back for the nose-down Cal-look.

snitz 路

Lining up ready to leave..

vduboy 路

Nice build mate, I went really tall on the profile on my bug when I had it and it helped with the revs on the freeway, but don't know if you'd fit any taller/wider on your rims.
Are they 5.5'' or 6'' Think I had 225/65-15 on my 6'' steelies and it was great for the cal look!

1958kafer 路

Were you on the run aswell?..where did we cross paths?.Hopefully I saw you and waved and wasn't a snob.

snitz 路

The Gasburners are 5.5" and would take a 205/65/15..Thats as big as I want to go and bring the revs down a bit when in 4th.I sometimes expect a bit too much for the beetle but I just have to remember that its an old school cruiser with a bit of poke.

My Mazda that I'm building is supposed to be the horsepower fix..lol

brendanwright 路

really nice looking car

1958kafer 路

Yep. We were in the run. I don't think you saw us. We were on Greenhill road and you flew up the inside lane.

1958kafer 路

PS. We were number 1278. You can look it up on the Bay to Birdwood website.

snitz 路

1958kafer wrote:Yep. We were in the run. I don't think you saw us. We were on Greenhill road and you flew up the inside lane.

Ahh gotcha. .That makes sense. It was soo banked on Greenhill Rd up that we went down the inside lane and short cut through the city and came out on Bartels Rd near Prince Alfreds College. The car needs a tune now.It runs rich and is a pig in traffic and doesn't want to idle..lol so we took a short cut.

njg02 路

Mate, great read. I'm on the lookout now to hopefully do the same. Thanks.

snitz 路

Still tinkering on the beetle..just changed the rear tyres from a 175 to a 205/70/15 to give the car some more legs and not rev its titties out at 100kph..lol.Definately more of a Cal look now..

snitz 路

Just needs a service and a dyno now..

1958kafer 路

Looks great. Got any side on pics?

snitz 路

Unfortunately not..id have to move the kombi which has no motor at the moment and a flat tyre to get it out. When it goes for a dyno soon Ill have to take some decent pics with my dslr and tripod.

Thanks, I love my wifes little beast.

Unfortunately no DOTVW as the cars unregistered at the moment, needs to go to West Torrens Dyno for a tune / carb re-jet and a 13 week old baby girl makes it even harder.lol.
Still tinkering on it as there's more that needs doing such as new carpet and seat re-trim in a fat biscuit style trim, sound deadening on the fire wall inside, child anchors on luggage floor area for child seats. Hopefully its ready by next DOTVW to show it off. Heading up to Dubs by the river would be sweet too..

I fitted the 205/70/15s on the back for just that reason.. hopefully it drop the revs down just that little bit to make it more comfortable on longer trips as it runs the factory box with 4.11 gears still and I cant afford a Berg 5 speed conversion and to be honest Id like to stay original box anyway.

Ill be at the DOTVW for a look though for sure..such a relaxed atmosphere and cool cars.
