hi, im looking at buying a golf but im wondering if a vr6 i found is worth going for? does anyone now - are they reliable ? do parts cost an arm and a leg?? and how much fuel they drink compared to a normal 4 cylinder golf?? :S ❓

My son had one for 3 or so years very nice to drive

we did replace the ABS unit which was about 2k or so
should have removed teh warning light globe would have been cheaper

I have a nice set of 17inch BBS wheels with new tyers available ( very cheap ) if you do purchase the VR6

unfortunatle his car was written off due to a nose tail incided in traffic

I suspose there probally around 4 -5K how much is this one ???

Hey dubnbass, are you a member of VWWatercooled?

Best to have a read of some of the owners threads there.

VR's are great, but many (alot) of them have had a hard life.

I'ma link ya to BJ's thread,

From what I've read, you'll need around $8,000 to buy/bring a VR into good condition.

My wife had a '94 VR6, it was an auto, but it went hard. She had if for about 3 years I think, and only had the usual minor things that needed doing. It was a damn good car.

Prices vary from $3k to $10k depending on km's and condition (as well as mods). With only 738 sold in Australia (less a few writes off since then) then are becoming rarer and rarer.

They are a great little sleeper, although the auto's can be flakey and they are up to 17 years old now so *things* are starting to go wrong. ABS is probably shot, but short of not providing antilock braking, it wont get in the way. Electric windows may be busted, they are ~$350 installed per door for a brand new oem unit (which should then run for another 10 years +). The heater core and the AC pump might not be working anymore, parts might be cheap but installation is a bitch, especially the heater core. Also the central locking and cruise control run off air lines which could be busted too.

I know that all sounds concerning, but these things are really a fix once and probably not worry about it again for the rest of your ownership. The VR6 is funtastic to drive and makes a glorious noise at WOT 🙂

There is a show on this weekend in Oxenford:
http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/forums/f21/oxenford-car-show-28th-august-2011-a-59521.html

It is an open show but there are 50+ VW entrants heading in 🙂

Being a current owner all I can say is they are plenty of fun to drive, torque steer aside, I enjoyed mine immensely until auto box decided to call it a day, repair bills for the auto can lead people to abandon them for parts or sell as a going concern/ project...if you are serious about buying one my friend, I would suggest you have an THOUROUGH inspection carried out by a qualified mechanic who has personally serviced both auto and manual version...I would be leaning towards the manual option and one that has a log book with verifiable miles around 120 k to 200k should be reasonably priced, look for tell tale signs of damage to front end, suspension and rust can be found in boot section and around spare wheel well if seals have perished. Another consideration would be buy a middle of the road example, the thorough inspection is still recommended and if you have space and a couple of extra grand you could pick the two that Weeds has for sale here, handy for spare panels and hard and expensive bits that you will have to order from the states or the UK. Either way, there is a show on at oxen ford pony club on 28 th august... See post in 2011 QLD events to see the current stock of standard and modified vr6's currently driving queensland roads. Good luck, Adam
