Legal Question

SebastienPeek ·

I've just removed my rear bumper and bloody hell do I like the look of it, nice and smooth and clean, nothing protruding out!

However, just because I like it doesn't mean the police won't. Especially seeing as though I'm only a P plater.

So, by me driving Zelda around with no rear bumper, is it defectable or am I "allowed" to do it?

68AutoBug ·

well
I just found the rubber bumper strips at classic vee dub in Sydney at $55 each..

No rear bumper...

well.. some people have gotten away with it for many years..
it depends on Your local police...

seeing new cars have no real bumpers.. sticking out..

I couldn't find them on the website, can you send me a link?

Yeah, I'm thinking for the moment (while I still have the torana lights and guards fitted) I leave the rear bumper off. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

In Queensland bumper's are required for rego, i got pulled up years ago for having no bumpers and was told that they are required by law.

Governor ·

Illegal to drive in SA without bumpers fitted.
They can defect you , it will cost you to get the defect removed at Regency Park.
You will also be issued with a fine and I believe that you can now lose points on your licence.
It's upto you if you want to take the risk.
As you are a P plater you know the police will be watching you more than other drivers?

SebastienPeek ·

So it isn't even just a cop shop defect, straight to Regency.
Damn.

Looks like I'll be refitting it then 🙁

Ollie ·

Bah! Just rip them off and wait for someone to pull you up! I doubt you'll ever get pulled over for them anyway 🙂
And if you do, just plead ignorance and stress that it's just a beetle and you don't know a whole lot about them! Works every time

shokwave2 ·

Yeah i drive with no bumpers now, and used to drive with T-bars (also illegal). Just drive until someone pulls you up.

SebastienPeek ·

Ahaha you know what Ollie, I might just remove it.
It looks so much smoother and nicer without it.

I'm also curious, that red beetle you took photos of, it didn't have the light thing over the rear number plate. Isn't that like, highly illegal?
Because it looks so much nicer, thinking about picking up a ventless decklid and getting rid of the light housing and so forth, just nice and smooth.

It looks great doesn't it! Well, the reason it's still legal is because he attached a small light to the rear bumper that shines onto the no. plate at night, so no worries with the police!

Well, I won't be having a bumper so I think I should be able to get away with it if I put an LED strip on the actual lip of the number plate holder... Just have to figure out where to hide the wires, I should just be able to splice it into the current circuit...

You keep giving me ideas :P
